Fifth Planned Parenthood video turns to 'intact' fetuses


A Planned Parenthood official discusses the procurement and cost of "intact" fetuses and altering abortion procedures to meet specific needs in a video released Tuesday by an anti-abortion group.


In the fifth video from the Center for Medical Progress, a woman identified as Melissa Farrell, director of research for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, discusses contributing to the organization's "diversification of the revenue stream" and the potential to "get creative" with conditions for procurement needs. The video was reportedly filmed this past April at a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas.

"Just depending on the patient's anatomy, how many weeks, where it's placed in the uterus ... we're going to potentially be able to have some that will be more or less intact, and then some that will not be," she said.

"But it's something that we can look at exploring how we can make that happen so we have a higher chance," she adds.

"And we've had studies in which the company, or in the case of the investigator, has a specific need for a certain portion of the products of conception and we bake that into our contract, and our protocol, that we follow this. So we deviate from our standard in order to do that," the Planned Parenthood official says in the latest video.

"If we alter our process and we are able to obtain intact fetal cadavers, then we can make it part of the budget, that any dissections are this, and splitting the specimens into different shipments is this. I mean, it's all just a matter of line items," she adds later.

Planned Parenthood, which has argued the series of videos are a part of a smear campaign against the organization, quickly fired back.

"The footage released today doesn’t show Planned Parenthood staff engaged in any wrongdoing or agreeing to violate any legal or medical standards," Planned Parenthood Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens said in a six-paragraph statement.

"Instead, the latest tape shows an extremely offensive intrusion and lack of respect for women, with footage of medical tissue in a lab. These extremists show a total lack of compassion and dignity for women’s most personal medical decisions," she added.

Laguens said the latest video "will be difficult for many people to see," adding that "[m]edical procedures and medical research are often difficult to watch."

Laguens alluded to graphic images in the video of a gloved hand with tweezers sifting through a dish of fetal parts and tissue.

"It is standard medical practice to review tissue to ensure the health and safety of patients, and this tissue was being examined and handled under the false pretense of a standard laboratory site visit for people purportedly conducting qualified medical research," she said.

Planned Parenthood has pushed back strongly on four other videos released in the past few weeks, noting that the recordings are heavily edited and maintaining that the group does not profit off the transfer of aborted fetal parts and tissue to researchers but merely gather costs relating to the tissue's preservation and transfer.

The Center for Medical Progress's David Daleiden said earlier Tuesday on CNN's “New Day" that the new video showed evidence "how Planned Parenthood is willing to sell fully intact fetuses to buyers of aborted fetal tissue.”

Debate over federal funding for Planned Parenthood is expected to resume on Capitol Hill after the August recess, after a measure to defund the group failed in the Senate on Monday.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards defended the group on Monday, saying the Senate vote was “about denying women access to healthcare in this country.”

Several more videos from the Center for Medical Progress are expected to be released.

HOUSTON, Aug. 4--The fifth undercover video in the controversy over Planned Parenthood’s sale of aborted baby parts shows the Director of Research for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, Melissa Farrell, advertising the Texas Planned Parenthood branch’s track record of fetal tissue sales, including its ability to deliver fully intact fetuses.

In the video, actors posing as representatives from a human biologics company meet with Farrell at the abortion-clinic headquarters of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast in Houston to discuss a potential partnership to harvest fetal organs.

“Where we probably have an edge over other organizations, our organization has been doing research for many many years,” explains Farrell. When researchers need a specific part from the aborted fetus, Farrell says, “We bake that into our contract, and our protocol, that we follow this, so we deviate from our standard in order to do that.”

Asked specifically if this means Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast can change abortion procedures to supply intact fetal specimens, Farrell affirms, “Some of our doctors in the past have projects and they’re collecting the specimens, so they do it in a way that they get the best specimens, so I know it can happen.”

The investigators ask Farrell how she will frame a contract in which they pay a higher price for higher quality fetal body parts, and she replies, “We can work it out in the context of--obviously, the procedure itself is more complicated,” suggesting that “without having you cover the procedural cost” and paying for the abortion, the higher specimen price could be framed as “additional time, cost, administrative burden.”

Farrell finally summarizes her affiliate’s approach to fetal tissue payments: “If we alter our process, and we are able to obtain intact fetal cadavers, we can make it part of the budget that any dissections are this, and splitting the specimens into different shipments is this. It’s all just a matter of line items.”

The sale or purchase of human fetal tissue is a federal felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $500,000 (42 U.S.C. 289g-2). Federal law also requires that no alteration in the timing or method of abortion be done for the purposes of fetal tissue collection (42 U.S.C. 289g-1).

Farrell also indicates to the investigators over lunch that the specimen sales from her department contribute significantly to Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast’s overall finances: “I think everyone realizes, especially because my department contributes so much to the bottom line of our organization here, you know we’re one of the largest affiliates, our Research Department is the largest in the United States. Larger than any the other affiliates’ combined.” In a Texas Senate hearing on July 29, former Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast clinic director Abby Johnson estimated that the affiliate had previously made up to $120,000 per month off of aborted fetal tissue.

The video is the fifth by The Center for Medical Progress documenting Planned Parenthood’s sale of aborted fetal parts. Project Lead David Daleiden notes: “This is now the fifth member of Planned Parenthood leadership discussing payments for aborted baby parts without any connection to actual costs of so-called tissue ‘donation.’ Planned Parenthood’s system-wide conspiracy to evade the law and make money off of aborted fetal tissue is now undeniable.” Daleiden continues, “Anyone who watches these videos knows that Planned Parenthood is engaged in barbaric practices and human rights abuses that must end. There is no reason for an organization that uses illegal abortion methods to sell baby parts and commit such atrocities against humanity to still receive over $500 million each year from taxpayers.”

More than two-thirds of Obamacare enrollees unsatisfied with coverage: survey


Less than a third of Obamacare exchange customers are satisfied with their plans, according to a survey released Monday that finds enrollees in the signature heath overhaul are less happy than those covered through government programs or their jobs.

Researchers at Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, a research arm of the consulting firm, said cost is a key driver in their findings, which say 30 percent of exchange customers are satisfied with their plans, compared to nearly half of those on the Medicaid program for the poor, 58 percent on Medicare for seniors and the disabled and 42 percent with coverage from their jobs.

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 set up web-based marketplaces, or exchanges, where customers can compare plans and purchase coverage, often with the help of income-based government subsidies.

A recent Supreme Court decision said those subsidies should be paid to qualified customers making between 100 and 400 percent of the federal poverty level no matter where they live, despite contested language in a key section of the law.

As Obamacare nears its third signup period this fall, Deloitte says customers are better off than their uninsured counterparts but unhappy compared to people who hold other types of insurance.

“The exchanges have improved access to care, but affordability remains a problem,” the Deloitte report said. “Enrollees report getting care they may not have been able to afford without their [exchange] coverage and are connecting with primary care providers at twice the rate of the uninsured.”

Clinton aide may have 'delivered favors' for friends, IG finds











An investigation may have found evidence a top State Department aide to Hillary Clinton took advantage of government employment rules with potential conflicts of interest and overpayments.

In a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry Thursday, Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said an inspector general probe suggested Huma Abedin leveraged her State Department job to benefit her two other employers at the time: the Clinton Foundation and a consulting firm called Teneo Strategies.

Teneo Strategies was founded by a longtime aide to Bill Clinton, Douglas Band, and boasted the former president as a paid board member when it first launched in 2011.

Abedin allegedly sent or received more than 7,000 emails on her government account that involved Band, the letter said.


As an example of the potential conflicts of interest at play, Grassley cited an email exchange in which Band pressed Abedin to encourage her State Department boss, Hillary Clinton, to facilitate a White House appointment for one of his clients.

Judith Rodin, the Teneo client in question, was then president of the Rockefeller Foundation, "which donated hundreds of millions of dollars to the Clinton Foundation, a fact which Mr. Band allegedly noted in his email to Ms. Abedin," the letter said.

"[E]mail evidence allegedly suggests that Ms. Abedin and Ms. Mills shared a desire to find a way to ensure the Department paid for Ms. Abedin's travel to and from New York," the letter continued.

Grassley called into question a $33,000 payment Abedin received from the State Department for leave she hadn't used.

The Iowa Republican highlighted multiple allegations received by the Judiciary Committee that indicated Abedin had indeed taken leave during her time as a government employee, casting doubt on whether Abedin should have received $33,000 in taxpayer money.

Abedin worked as a full-time staffer to Hillary Clinton from January 2009 until June 2012, at which point she was given a "special government employee" designation and soon took on roles at the Clinton Foundation and Teneo.

That designation is designed to allow individuals who fill "an unmet government need for rare or unique expertise" to retain their private-sector positions while receiving compensation from the government.

But Abedin has drawn fire for the SGE arrangement that gave her heavy influence over Hillary Clinton's schedule and travel while allowing her to serve as a senior adviser at Teneo.

Critics have said the personnel rule was quietly bent to permit Abedin to collect her government paycheck while wielding her influence to the benefit of her other employers.

For example, Hillary Clinton jetted to Ireland with Abedin at her side for her last official trip as secretary, during which she attended an event hosted by a major Clinton Foundation donor that had been promoted by Teneo.

The State Department's inspector general began looking into the issue of Abedin's SGE designation in 2013, Grassley indicated in a letter to Abedin Thursday.

"The Committee has learned of allegations that, during your simultaneous employment by the Department of State, Teneo, and the Clinton Foundation, you were solicited for and delivered favors for preferred individuals," Grassley wrote to Abedin.

Abedin was reportedly among several key aides to Hillary Clinton that hosted email accounts on a private server in the presidential candidate's New York home in violation of federal records laws.

New Nuclear Power Seen as Big Winner in Obama’s Energy Plan





The Obama administration is giving the struggling U.S. nuclear industry a glimmer of hope with changes to its carbon emission rules that mean new reactors will count more toward meeting federal benchmarks.

States will be able to take more credit for future carbon-free electricity to be generated by nuclear power plants still under construction when meeting their emission reduction targets, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in a call on Sunday. The targets are required under the EPA’s landmark Clean Power Plan that was unveiled on Monday.

Under last year’s draft of the rules, the yet-to-be completed reactors were counted as existing units that wouldn’t be fully credited for carbon reductions generated in the future after they started operating. The nuclear power industry complained that amounted to a penalty on the plants and made state targets harder to achieve.

“We tend to view new rules as potentially the first bit of good news for the struggling nuclear industry,” Julien Dumoulin-Smith, an analyst for UBS, wrote on Monday in a research note.

Nuclear operators are being challenged by high maintenance and clean up costs as well as competition from cheap natural-gas fueled power plants and low-cost wind and solar generation. About 10 percent of the nation’s nuclear output could be retired early due to low energy prices, according to Moody’s Investors Service.

The question of waste disposal also hangs over the industry as efforts to establish a federal repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada have stalled.

The Nuclear Energy Institute, a Washington-based trade group, said it was “pleased” that the EPA recognized that nuclear plants under construction “should count toward compliance when they are operating,” according to an e-mail statement from Marvin Fertel, president of the group.

Fertel said the industry was disappointed that existing reactors won’t get credit for their carbon-reduction value given that some plants are at risk for early retirement, according to the statement.

Delayed Projects

New reactor projects - the first in decades - have been plagued by delays and cost increases.

Beneficiaries of the rule changes would include Southern Co. and Scana Corp., which are building new reactors in Georgia and South Carolina, respectively. The Tennessee Valley Authority, which is building a reactor at its Watts Bar facility near Spring City, Tennessee, would also get a boost.

“We had indicated that any nuclear facility that was under construction would be considered as part of the standard-setting process,” U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said in a call with reporters Sunday. The agency reconsidered after reviewing comments, and now will be counting new nuclear under construction as “a compliance strategy,” she said.

“If nuclear plants already under construction can be counted toward a state’s carbon reduction goals, then those states may not have to do something else to reduce carbon,” said Paul Patterson, a New York-based utility analyst for Glenrock Associates LLC.

Utility Concerns

The rule changes address one of TVA’s “major concerns,” Scott Brooks, a spokesman for Tennessee Valley Authority, said in a statement Monday.

“That means we can count Watts Bar Unit 2, scheduled to be online within the next year, as part of our compliance plan.”

Southern is reviewing the final rules and remained concerned that they “impede state’s authority to act in the best interests of customers,” Tim Leljedal, a spokesman for Southern, said in an e-mail statement Monday.

Southern said in January that delays may add more than $700 million in costs to the twin reactors its building at Plant Vogtle near Augusta, Georgia. The company has said customers won’t have to pay for those setbacks.

“Nuclear facilities will be credited because it’s new, zero-carbon generation that will be credited as part of a compliance strategy,” McCarthy said. “We think that’s entirely consistent and appropriate.”

Activists Are Trying To Remove the Gun Emoji





Does the right to bear arms apply to emoji arms? It’s actually a somewhat serious question; activist nonprofit New Yorkers Against Gun Violence aims (excuse the pun) to disarm the iPhone by pressuring Apple’s CEO to remove the gun icon from its emoji catalog.

“The iPhone is ubiquitous. [Guns are] on the iPhone as an option,” the executive director of NYAGV, Leah Barrett, told Fast Company. “We thought this was a way to bring attention to the issue [of gun violence].”

The activists encourage people to tweet at Apple’s CEO and ask for the gun emoji to be removed, using the hashtag #DisarmTheiPhone. However, Fast Company cautions, “If a company like Apple removes words from that language, even if they’re technically pictures, isn’t it censorship? How far does this linguistic adjustment go? If we type the letters G-U-N should they be autocorrected to S-U-N, P-U-N, or F-U-N?” Well?

MSNBC Host Blames Climate Change For August Heat Forcing Obama Speech On Climate Change Inside…

'Mother nature may be making his point for him'




MSNBC host José Díaz-Balart called the decision Monday to move President Obama’s speech on climate change inside because of hot temperatures an example of “Mother Nature … making his point for him” on the issue.

The network made a move against left-wing programming by canceling three of its progressive commentary shows last week, but this was an example of editorializing on behalf of the White House showing up in an ostensibly straight newscast.

“A couple of hours from now, President Obama will unveil a new plan to slash greenhouse gases and promote renewable energy, all in an effort to fight climate change,” Díaz-Balart said. “In fact, it seems like Mother Nature may be making his point for him sometimes. Today’s event was supposed to be held outside, but with temperatures expected to be in the mid-90s, officials figured it was too hot, so they moved it to the East Room.”

Guess How Many Licensed Mammogram Facilities Planned Parenthood Runs



Planned Parenthood is under fire for organ trafficking admissions made by its senior executives in a series of undercover videos released over the last month. The videos, four of which have been released so far, show numerous top Planned Parenthood officials acknowledging the purchase and sale of aborted baby parts and haggling over their prices.

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s top abortion provider, swears up and down that notwithstanding the numerous admissions made on tape by its top officials, the organization doesn’t buy or sell organs and body parts harvested from aborted babies. Then, in order to defend its reputation, Planned Parenthood points to other medical procedures performed by the group that don’t result in body counts. One of its top rhetorical gimmicks is to reference all the mammograms that women can receive by visiting Planned Parenthood:

Planned Parenthood helps women nationwide get access to mammograms, as part of the range of health care Planned Parenthood health centers provide to nearly three million people a year.


There’s only one problem: Planned Parenthood does not manage a single licensed mammography facility in the U.S. Not one. Of the 8,735 licensed mammography facilities in America, Planned Parenthood operates exactly zero.

How do we know this? Because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration keeps a list of every licensed facility in the country. It updates this list weekly. And the most recent list of the more than 8,700 licensed mammogram facilities in the U.S. shows that not one is operated by Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood has even intimated that if its spigot of federal funding is turned off, women will have nowhere to turn for vital health care and cancer screenings. It turns out that Planned Parenthood only qualifies as the nation’s largest health care provider for women if you think abortion — the deliberate taking of an innocent human life — counts as health care.

Hillary begs forgiveness from abortion warriors in new video: I am with you, Planned Parenthood!






Five days later, she’s still doing penance with the left for calling the CMP videos “disturbing,” eh? She must be in some awfully hot water behind the scenes: Josh Jordan’s right that she’s taking a risk here by stepping up for PP knowing that more videos are to come, with who knows what sort of horrors described between sips of wine and bites of salad. Her strategy to date has been to lie low and avoid comment on hot buttons as much as possible, lest it leave her caught between attacks from the right by the GOP and from the left by Bernie Sanders. With Planned Parenthood, though, she doesn’t have a choice. This is pure litmus-test material for liberals, something Sanders (or Joe Biden?) could club her with if she stayed silent, especially after she already antagonized them with what she said about the clips. Plus, single women are arguably the most important constituency to her campaign next year, one where she needs to run up the score to offset the GOP’s advantage with men. What good is having a First! Woman! President!, Democratic women might wonder, if she’s not ready to go to bat for abortion on the day the Senate is set to vote to defund PP?

I’ll give her credit for this much: At least she uses the word “abortion” here. Usually Democratic paeans to selling mutilated babies’ body parts are euphemistic all the way through. While we wait for the big vote, go read Sean Davis and Mollie Hemingway on some of Planned Parenthood’s more popular lies about what they do for “women’s health.”

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin Will Vote to Defund Planned Parenthood


Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat for West Virginia who had previously supported funding for Planned Parenthood, announced today that he'll vote to defund the organization.

Manchin said in a statement:

“Like many West Virginians, I am very troubled by the callous behavior of Planned Parenthood staff in recently released videos, which casually discuss the sale, possibly for profit, of fetal tissue after an abortion. Until these allegations have been answered and resolved, I do not believe that taxpayer money should be used to fund this organization; instead those funds should be sent to other health care providers, including community health centers, which provide important women’s healthcare services.   While my vote is one that will prevent taxpayers dollars from going to Planned Parenthood, I will remain committed to ensuring that all women in West Virginia and America receive the health care services they need.”
