461  Economy / Services / Using my car as a mobile billboard for BTC. I want to advertise BTC businesses. on: August 06, 2013, 03:40:48 PM
Hi everyone.

I've been looking for a smart way to get some bitcoins. Here's my idea:

Recently I've been talking to one of my friends, who owns a small publishing press, about getting exposure for his business. We thought about various mediums, and decided that vehicular advertising might be a smart way to get word of his press out there. Currently I drive a minimum of 125 miles a week just to get to work and back. I'm very active on the weekends (clock at least 50 miles) and even throughout the week, so there's a huge potential for exposure. There's a total of 175-200 miles per week on average, through urban and residential areas.

However, why stop at his business? I haven't started with this advertising, but I'd like to ask the bitcoin community if anyone who owns a business is interested in paying me to advertise their business on my car.

First off, some information about my vehicle (https://i.imgur.com/czZBkL0.jpg):
-2001 Gold Toyota Highlander, no damage or blemishes.
-Currently there are no advertisements on the vehicle (friend's ad is on its way in the mail)
-Currently I have 128,500 miles (as of August 7th), but it was at less than 100k when I got it in 2011.

Some information on where I drive:
-I live in the Manchester NH area. Manchester has a population of 109,830, so it is not too big but it is not small either. It is the 241st largest city in the US.
-I commute from Manchester, through Bedford and Merrimack to Nashua. Nashua is right on the border with Massachussetts.
-I currently live in an apartment complex near the Manchester Airport.
-I go to Boston quite often.

I've looked at some advertising services, and most pay in the $250-$500 range per month. With this in mind, here's how I would set my base price.

Small* bitcoin related business: .5 BTC per month.
Small* business, unrelated to bitcoin: .75 BTC per month.
Large business, related to bitcoin: 1.00 BTC per month.
Large business, unrelated to bitcoin: 1.25 BTC per month.

*Going by the EU definition.

In addition, I will charge more for larger ads. The pricing is based on the individual ad in question. I don't know exactly how much I will charge yet.

I do have some restrictions:
-You must be a legitimate business. I will not accept any business who has evidence of fraud.
-No pornography, tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. I won't put a green camel on my car.  Wink
-I'm willing to advertise for gambling sites, but I need to check the legality within NH. As far as I know it's legal.
-I really don't care if I advertise competitors, but I'm sure others would so unless both parties agree I will not advertise opposing businesses.
-Unless you are going to pay me for at least 6 months, the sticker/ad must be removable after the month is up!

So, how would this work?

Step 1: Interested parties should post in this thread.
-This is the best place to post questions, too.

Step 2: I'll research your company and make sure its legitimate, and also get a notion of its size.
-Any information you can give me is helpful.

Step 3: You must provide the ad to put on my car. I will PM you my address and then you can mail it.
-If you find a really good site to get it off of, let me know.
-I want the link so that I can confirm that the ad is either removable or not.

Step 4: Prior to putting the ad on my car, I want a down payment. 50% for removable ads, 25% for removable.
-This is negotiable with trusted members.

Step 5: After I get the down payment, I'll put the ad on my car and post a picture of it in this thread, so that there's proof that I follow through.

Terms and Conditions:
-You have to pay for at least 1 month. After the month is up, I'll contact you to ask whether or not you want to pay for another month.
-If the ad gets defaced, or I have to remove it for whatever reason, I will refund you completely.
-If I get into an accident that is my fault (I never have) I will refund you.
-If you want more than a month, you can pay me monthly if you are a trusted member.
-If your business becomes revealed as a fraud, or you use shady business practices I reserve the right to remove the ad. No refunds.

Well, there's my idea. I would appreciate feedback, and of course customers.

Thanks in advance!

Where is that?
It's on techcrunch.com
Click on the image to see the article.

The "source" for that image on that article leads to the page I already went to, which does not have the supposed press release.

Also:
Quote
For those of you wondering where we got the press release: I called the Suffolk County Police Department for a statement, and they emailed it to me.

So she called them, and they made a "press" release that for whatever reason only she can see? Sounds like bs to me. The font on her image isn't even the correct one, and it doesn't say who sent it to her. Plus, that source that I posted earlier (by Huffington Post) says that no one visited the house. I trust a reliable news source over some blogger who wants a ticket on the hype train.

This entire story sounds very unlikely.

Where is that? I'm on their site and the only press releases for august 1st are

"Body found in Blackhawk Marina"
"Copiague man arrested for having 69 license suspensions"
"man arrested for multiple burglaries"

http://apps.suffolkcountyny.gov/police/morepress.htm

And that image has the wrong font, and does not have the usual information that their press releases have, such as time and the author of the press release.

You seem to be operating under the assumption that the government has public interest in mind. This is about protecting private business, and the current corrupt failing financial system long enough for them to collapse it profitably. They don't care about the United States, or its people, or any people or nation for that matter. This is about 1 thing, same as in every other war. Profit. The US, China, and Russia are on an economic and resource based collision course. One or more nations must change its consumption habits quickly or else there will not be enough resources to go around. This is a fact. This is first a game by the capital holders, second the world being made to dance and climb over each other for the privilege of things like clean water and nontoxic food. If they have to burn down the world to make a profit they will.

I was going to go through each point individually, but then I realized I don't have to. Your argument has been that the US will go to war. Your "evidence" is that politicians are evil, and that they're going to somehow make a profit off of a war with Iran. This is not real evidence. It is simply your opinion.

Where is actual proof?

Actually, I don't need actual proof, since I don't think that we'll find it. Instead, I want you to explain how anyone profits from "burn[ing] down the world", as you put it.

I also want an explanation as to why going to war is better than lifting the embargo. Stop ignoring this point.

I'm obviously just bitter about tuition costs and my student loans...

The public school system in Texas blows ass, too.  I'll thank 43 for that one!

Well, I only have to pay 16k a year for the 51st ranked University in the US.

Live free or die.  Cool

The US has the 17th best education system in the world, according to Pearson.
http://thelearningcurve.pearson.com/

So sad...

You'd think we could at least crack the top 10, but for some reason we just don't seem to give a shit about education.

Tuition prices skyrocketting in the last decade, while the economy tanks.  Rich get richer, poor get pooer, yadayada... congratulations, you graduated college!  Time to repay $30k of student loans! Tongue

Is it sad? We have one of the largest populations with a wide range of languages and cultures. It's hard to educate that many people. Compare it to Finland, which has a measly 5 million people, but has the "best" educational system. Finland is able to have a more in depth educational system because there's so few people. They also have 91% of the people speaking the same language, versus the US' english speaking population of 80%.

Also, 17th out of 196 countries is not bad... That means that the US is doing better than most of Europe.
467  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anarchy and libertarianism are for a civilized species. on: August 05, 2013, 03:58:22 PM
Humanity is not a civilized species. It is numerous rabid packs of wild primates who happen to be able to build tools and speak eloquently. In times of conflict, they resort to a pecking order, a pack -- just like wolves and many other mammals.

Humans are mostly socially simplistic. They usually focus on and live for social status and mating. The adventurous who are driven to profit through innovation and higher purpose either make their way to the top of the pack, or are shunned by those above them and by the collective whom follows.

This species is a volatile experiment. It is heavily monitored and looked upon and rightly quarantined from the rest of the galactic community. In fact, it is an outright miracle you guys haven't blown yourself up like the Maldek and the people of Mars, the former is the oblivion known as the Asteroid belt. This entire solar system has had numerous failures of this kind.

You guys are doing much better. However, it is foreseen that the next 300 years don't have much hope. This planet will likely no longer suit your kind. It was lovely while it lasted.

And right there is where the crazy started.

But not to give untrained people guns. That's the stupidest idea ever! A few year old kids already killed each other! And psychopaths have the easiest opportunity to kill people.
Normal people don't need ANY guns.

I don't support guns, but a lot of people do, especially in the US. You can't lump in an independent organization promoting a right (whether you agree with it or not) with the likes of the NSA.

Hi everyone. Partly to gain rep, partly because I need BTC soon, I'm selling four gift cards. Because I'm more likely to get scammed than the buyer, I'm requesting that unless you're a trusted member, you send the BTC first. If you are trusted, I'll PM you the number/pin first. The cards are as follows:

Gamestop: $60.00 value, .5 BTC
Barnes and Noble 1: $20.00, .18 BTC
Barnes and Noble 2: $35.00, .28 BTC
Old Navy: $37.56, .32 BTC

This offer is only valid until 4:00. At 4:00 (probably a little earlier) I'm just going to sell the cards at http://www.giftcardrescue.com.

If interested, post here. Don't just PM me because I want it the transactions to be open for all to see.

Decided to just sell them online.

Poor to no education, religious sects like the catholics and protestants, all those acts "protecting" but in fact striping you of your rights without one even noticing, spying on their own citizens = 90% not giving a fuck, spying on other countries = 100% not giving a fuck, more wars in the last 60 years than the world combined in over 200, bombing countries back to the stone age, manipulating countries, overthrowing governments, no choice in elections, no boobies on tv etc. etc.

Its like frogs and boiling water, if you put them into boiled water they will immediately jump out, but if you increase the temperature gradually with the frog in it, it will be cooked.

First off, that's impossible. Second, the US has been involved in 106 conflicts since its inception (conflicts include any military action; read the link to see what I mean). GB (and the UK) has had 121 conflicts (since 1700). Russia has had 54 conflicts (since 1700).  PRChina has had a wopping 9 (since 1907).

471  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do most Bitcoiners seem intelligent? on: August 05, 2013, 01:52:48 PM
IQ tests have to be the most bullshit way of identifying a persons intelligence I have ever seen, especially the ones that are largely maths problems because not everyone is good at or likes doing maths.

If that's what you believe, then you are free to ignore someone's IQ test score.  No one is saying you should be forced to take someone's IQ test score into consideration, just that it would be nice to have a person's IQ test score available for those of us that disagree with you and believe that IQ test scores are a good measure of intelligence.

Are you really going to judge people's contributions by their IQ, as opposed to what they say? That is very stupid. What if someone with a low IQ says something that is provably correct? Is it wrong just because their IQ is low?

As of this day, perhaps.  However..I'll just leave this here.

http://www.wikinvest.com/concept/China's_Aging_Population

Edit: that was a bad page to reference..I'm driving around with a couple people talking to me..this one is better.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/11/business/global/rise-in-chinas-aging-poses-challenge-to-beijing.html?pagewanted=all

Even with 500 million elderly people there would still be more than 1 billion workers... 2.5x the entire US population (assuming the US population grows to ~400 million). It's natural that China surpasses the US. When 1/6 of the world is chinese, of course China will have a larger economy than the US which is a fraction of its size.

Also, in 40 years the US will have almost a fourth of its population being elderly. Not quite the 1/3 that China will have, but the US would be catching up.

http://www.aoa.gov/Aging_Statistics
(Says 19% by 2030, a 6.6% increase in 30 years. Assuming this continues, it would be 23.4% by 2050)

In any case, I don't see how this helps your point. Your original point was that the US will get passed by China, and then you gave me evidence that it wouldn't, due to its elderly problem. "As of this day", China has 4x the population of the US, but with half the GDP. China has a GDP growth rate of 7.8%, while the US is 2.2%. China's growth rate has dropped almost 3% in the last three years. With this elderly problem its entirely possible that China does not pass the US.

474  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do most Bitcoiners seem intelligent? on: August 05, 2013, 12:45:06 PM
I always thought that IQ tests were not representative of intelligence. Any "standardized" test is way too simplistic to measure how intelligent one is. People have different strengths and weaknesses, and you can't just pick one number to decide their "intelligence". There's also the factor that getting a bunch of  random, generic questions right might not have anything to do with how smart you are with actual real world problems.

Of course, if you have a really high IQ you could be incredibly intelligent- but that one number should not be the sole indicator.

I found some interesting articles on the subject:

On motivation and IQ:

On the "three components" of intelligence:

Nope, that is not true. US' median age is 36.9, and China's is 35.2 . I think that you're thinking of Japan, which actually has that problem.

477  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Count down to Iran invasion on: August 02, 2013, 07:50:42 PM
The issue, as outlined in the wikipedia entry, is that they aren't using Federal Reserve Notes to transact their oil internationally.

Of course they don't. We don't trade with them. If the US cares so much about what currency they use, why did we place an embargo on them?

You're saying that it makes sense for the US to invade their country, leading to US deaths, negative public opinion, and a debilitated Iranian economy just so that they use USD instead of the Euro? That is not sound logic.

I think it would make more sense for the US to just lift the embargo. Why go to war?

It's irrelevant whether the United States trades with Iran;  it's a currency issue.  Exporting Federal Reserve notes maintains the value of the US dollar, and the United States uses military force to ensure that the US dollar stays as the world reserve currency through the Petrodollar.

This. Listen to what he is saying for a second before you convince yourself of your point. The US NEEDS people to use the dollar to trade in oil because that is what backs the value of the USD. Seeing as the USD is fiat with zero backing, the only real way they can force people to use it is via energy cartels which mandate people to use it to trade oil, and therefore accept it in exchange for oil.

This means a constant supply of foreign holders. It doesn't matter of martians trade with us, if they buy oil in USD from ANYONE it props up the dollar, and it certainly needs some propping. That is not even to mention the geopolitical value of the region in regards to proxy war with Russia and China, but all the natural resources located there. I am not advocating war, but these are facts.

You seem to ignore some of my points. It's kind of annoying.

You have not explained why the US would impose an embargo on Iran, if it's so important that Iran use the USD. Maybe I'm crazy, but wouldn't trading with them force them to use the USD? Are US merchants going to accept rial and start speaking Farsi?

Also, energy cartels? You mean like OPEC, which Iran is a part of but the US is not? The US does not have an "energy cartel". In fact, for the most powerful nation on Earth we are very reliant on others for energy. Interestingly enough, less than 13% of our oil comes from the Middle East.

Finally, proxy war? This is not the Cold War. China is our closest economic partner. If they suffer, we suffer. We are not enemies with Russia either. Remember that the US did not start the Syrian Civil War. Assad was a dictator, and like all dictators his people got fed up. In this case Russian and American interests came in conflict, but it was not a decision made by Russia, the US, or Iran. It was purely the fault of the Syrian government.

This last paragraph is not a reply to the quoted post, but you've been ignoring it every time I say it. Explain why Hamas is exempt from the "mutual defense treaty" but the US is not.

479  Economy / Economics / Re: My bank account's got robbed by European Commission. Over 700k is lost. on: August 02, 2013, 07:16:29 PM
Isn't the goal of the EU right now to devalue the EUR, though?

They said just yesterday that they want to take the same stimulus approach as the US, and Bernanke has said since forever (until taper talk started) that the goal was to devalue the USD and boost confidence in equities, bonds, etc...

It's not that they want to devalue the Euro, necessarily, it's that they don't want it to not be worth too much more than the USD. If the Euro gets too high, then trade with the US will suffer because US merchants will not want to pay more. The EU is much more reliant on the US than the US is on the EU, so they would be hurt while the US would find other partners with less valuable currencies.

Great thread - it's my experience as well that the bitcoin community at large has a higher level of intelligence, and most importantly, a better sense of awareness.  Why?  This is fringe community, it's not a place for the sheeple to congregate.  To jump into something revolutionary and outside the norm, it either takes courage, anger, or smarts.  Or all three.  As a rule, those that dare to help create new systems for others to follow are smart enough to see the big picture, and to conceive of ways of doing things that improve upon what already exists.  Bitcoin is a community of leaders, for the most part (at least for the time being), and those folks tend to take a high IQ with them as they lead the charge.  It's one of my favorite aspects of this group - we think for ourselves, overall, and it's a beautiful thing.   Grin
