It would be effective to some degree but to be honest if sock puppets want to exist on here they'll find a way. The only thing you can do is exercise caution when trading on here by using services like escrow by John.K.

https://www.bitmit.net/en/user/ThekingfamilyI highly recommend everyone treads lightly with this user. He was ready to accept 2.5BTC for the 2x iPhones and 1 x iPad. He wanted me to make payment first to his Bitcoin / PayPal address. I firmly told him that I would not do anything without Escrow and that's when he said he wanted me to send money first to his Virwox so he could pay shipping costs. I have no problem with people selling goods cheaply, that's not the issue here. The issue here is he's wanting people to send payment first. Secondly, this is what set off another trigger. https://www.bitmit.net/en/item/51939-apple-iphone-5-white-16gb-unlockedI got outbid on that and there has still been no received feedback. You would think if someone was selling an iPhone they would want the buyer to leave feedback right? Hopefully Bitmit support see this and no one gets scammed.

If you can upload a photo Id I can sell you up to 50 usd l0l This is hilarious. Nothing wrong with him asking for ID and you should respect the fact that he's even offering you PayPal as a payment option on here.

My account was not hacked. Thanks for the warning. Yeah, we'll just believe what you post. No Escrow. You Send, I receive. I receive, then Send. Cool, I don't like to use escrow either unless it's LocalBitcoins.com because it's just a hassle to arrange both parties to be on at the same time. I like to get my trades done fairly quickly, not 24-48 hour periods. Let me point out that I am the oldest bitcoin user. No time to play games. You're not the oldest Bitcoin user.

What kind of price are you looking at?

Beware, the user inceptor is a SCAMMER. He promised to send me 1.8 BTC after sending him 161$ via paypal. Of course, he's logging in on here and ignoring all my messages now. Luckily, I didn't send the items as gifts and will try to receive a refund now.
Make a scam report will full proof so he gets the scammer tag and then charge back.

Never heard of the guy and i am one here all the time.. hacked my ass. He screwed you boys out of your coins.. every time people scam around here they claim hacked account it is bullshit.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=30541Now how does someone like that get their account hacked? I don't see how that affects his vulnerability? No one is 100% protected against intrusion and site status doesn't provide some kind of immunity. I'm sure if this is a real intrusion, if and when he gets his account back he'll post a thread to clear things up.

Actually the accused never claimed he was hacked, it was assumed by someone else. Still, I never assume someone got genuinely hacked unless I was aware of a bug because it's so easy to make it look like your account was intruded upon.

How does one protect themselves from something like this in the future? After all, the REAL lightlord has good reputation and even owns his own betting site? Why shouldn't I have trusted him? Why would you trust anyone you haven't met? You have to understand that these people are scamming because they know they're hardly any consequence for it. Worst case scenario is they get a banned account and it's not long before they repeat the process of doing trusted trades and then getting someone to go first and scamming them. Use escrow as MUCH as possible. I know John.K provides a service here and while it is tedious waiting for communication on both sides of the party, it is much better than losing your money. You can even make use of LocalBitcoins.com escrow service, just store the coins in your provided wallet, link someone to the ad and it's pretty much clockwork. In all honesty, this was just a case of bad luck with him being possibly hacked but if you had used a form of Escrow you would have been fine.

Vanitygen gives you an address as well as the corresponding private key in WIF format (starting with a 5, K, or L). In order to import it into Bitcoin-Qt, go into the Console (Help, Debug Window, Console) and type in importprivkey <key> where <key> is that private key you got. It'll take a couple minutes (seriously, it could take a while) while it goes through the blockchain to see if that address ever received any coins, and then it should be a part of the wallet and show up in your list of address on the Receiving tab.
To get a "firstbits" address (which I'm assuming is what you mean by "short"), send some coins to it, wait for several confirmations, and then look them up on a site like blockchain.info. I'm not aware of a tool that finds the firstbits by looking at one's local blockchain, though there probably is one out there somewhere.
Am I right in saying that anyone with the private key can import the address into their client?
