4621  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Future of Money Conf- Some feedback and pic on: April 26, 2012, 03:40:07 PM
Glad to hear all went well at the conference!  It is exciting that Bitcoin is being taken more seriously by some of the corporate folks...
4622  Economy / Speculation / Re: back to square one on: April 26, 2012, 03:31:34 PM
Another thing to add to your list is the recent release of blockchain.info's iPhone app.  I know Android already had an app, but the iPhone brings ease-of-use Bitcoin to a large demographic as well...!

Do you have a link (or name) for the iPhone app? I'm sure it's been mentioned elsewhere, but I want to make sure I get the "right" one. Smiley
Search in the app store for blockchain, then look for the rubrix-cube-like icon.
4623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Instawallet will we down for a few hours on: April 26, 2012, 07:25:13 AM
I'd prefer your ToS say that as long as the site is running, the users' bitcoins are safe and will never be used.  I'd also like to see that a warning will be posted at least 90 days prior to any known permanent shutdown of the site.

JMO, take it or leave it.  Wink

Same as the other stories but a quote at the end from an "expert" in the payments industry needs to be saved for posterity  Cheesy

Quote
"Frankly, it makes no sense to me. But that doesn't mean its wrong, just that it makes no sense to me." wrote Ronald J. Mann, a law professor at Columbia University and an expert in payment systems, in a Wednesday e-mail sent to Ars. "The idea that they're going to get a VC-like return in bitcoin-based projects [is ludicrous]."
Well, let's see.... if you have 100k users (who use the game an hour a day, on average), and 25% of them have a decent enough video card to mine on, then that's 25k mining individuals.  Assume you get, on average, 100 MH/s per user, that's around 110 GH/s.  110 GH/s would net to around $350/day at today's difficulty and price.

100k users being advertised to, on the other hand, would be something like 100 * $0.30 = $30/day.

I can see it being more profitable than advertising, if done right.
4625  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla now purposely delays USD withdrawals from Bitcoin exchanges on: April 26, 2012, 12:13:10 AM
I received my withdrawal from MtGox to my Dwolla account within 24 hours of initiating the transfer.  I sent it on to my bank account the moment I saw it had arrived.

Note that I've never given any identification to Dwolla or MtGox, and I've always (with one early-on exception) done withdrawals of less than $1000.
4626  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Withdraw USD from mtgox on: April 26, 2012, 12:05:30 AM
^^ SEEMS LEGIT.

For some reason, having a bank on wheels (read: extremely easy to make off with) seems like a bad idea...
4627  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Withdraw USD from mtgox on: April 25, 2012, 06:06:59 PM
As I have long positions, I didn't withdraw money from mtgox for a long period of time.

But few days ago I tried to do this with some not significant amount - $400... And found this possible only with wild comission (aurumxchange 6.5% with huge limitations on amount) or wild delays (bank transfers).

Bitinstant does not allow withdraw LRU from MtGox.

I must admit that I don't know what is dwolla and in what amounts and delays money go there. If you have expirence - please share.

In other side - LR deposits go instantly into market and with 0% comission.

So I make a conclusion, that MtGox inflates market with fiat funds by this way. And now Bitcoin is just a bubble. Its exchange rate not dropped only because there is no good way for fiat to go out.

And when any instant way for fiat out will appear - exchange rate could drop significantly.
Why not use Dwolla?

4629  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: MTGox Green Address Withdraw time on: April 25, 2012, 03:38:03 PM
By default, the Bitcoin client sends out whatever coins would cost the least in transaction fees.  That usually means the oldest and largest deposits will be used to send out coins whenever a customer withdraws from their account.

That's not right.

The Satoshi client tries to use the smallest value of inputs possible.  It doesn't try to minimise transaction fees, or select coins based on age, with the exception that it will avoid using coins with less than 6 confirmations if possible.

If you have 101 1 BTC coins, and one 110 BTC coin, all of which have over 6 confirmations, and you try to spend 100 BTC then it will use the 101 1 BTC coins, not the single large coin.  You'll get 1 BTC back in change.
Well, technically, yes.  But we're talking about the same thing here.  Minimizing inputs also serves to minimize transaction fees.
4630  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs - Bitforce Single and Mini Rig Box on: April 25, 2012, 03:35:11 PM
Just an FYI on the fan used in the Rev3 Singles (single fan, heatpipe):

Sunon ME92251V2
2700 RPM
45 CFM
32 dBA

The Sunon is a pretty loud fan. Those with visions of keeping these in a bedroom had better be hard of hearing. In comparison, the earlier dual-fan Rev2 Singles had quieter fans:

Panaflow FBA09A12L
2100 RPM
43 CFM
27 dBA

The Rev3 units do seem to run a few degrees cooler than the Rev2's, but that is not unexpected due to the more powerful fan. I'm not sure the heatpipe design has bought them anything in terms of better thermals; the same temperatures could be achieved by putting the Sunons into the original Rev2 box.

It is evident from prior posts that BFL has been shipping several designs of Singles (some with copper heatsinks, some with blue heatsinks, 2 fans, 1 fan, an internal 2nd/3rd fan in some) so the fan models mentioned here may not apply to all Singles out there.

On the subject of thermal throttling, that threshold seems to be different for each Single. I have Rev2's that will happily work at 75C before throttling. I have a Rev3 (heatpipe) that throttles at 65C. (temperatures as reported by cgminer). I'm not sure what to conclude from this yet ... other than YMMV.
Considering the 5870 I use generates somewhere between 42 and 64 dB, I'm not particularly worried about a fan generating 32dB.  In fact, white noise, like the kind coming from fans, helps me sleep better anyway.  Wink

The second news is potentially even bigger than the first and it concerns BitInstant, which is one of the most successful and well run companies in the Bitcoin economy. They just took part in a very surprisingly Bitcoin pro and Bitcoin-interested money conference (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=77846.0) and in a recent interview Charlie Shrem hinted at something really big.

http://www.thebitcointrader.com/2012/04/bitinstant-hints-at-new-contract.html
Ho-ly crap.  That is HUGE to getting more people adopting.  Probably the #1 reason people don't get into Bitcoin is because they aren't easy to buy (yet).  Of course, let's not get ahead of ourselves too much, and count our chickens before they hatch.

Another thing to add to your list is the recent release of blockchain.info's iPhone app.  I know Android already had an app, but the iPhone brings ease-of-use Bitcoin to a large demographic as well...!
4632  Other / Off-topic / Re: I visited BFL, any questions ? on: April 24, 2012, 05:21:39 PM
It's not a side job, at least for the people I have met.  But the demand far exceeds anything they were expecting, I think.  That, coupled with the unusual requirements mining bitcoins puts on an FPGA design accounts for most of the problems people have seen so far.  There is a lot of labor that goes into assembling a single, to include the testing they do.  It's a fairly labor intensive process at this point - it will probably be streamlined at some point, but there's still the learning curve and then you throw in development of the Rigbox and a couple other bitcoin projects and there's only so much time in a day.

Like I said in the other thread, there are far more orders that I personally have knowledge of than are reported on these forums.  That does not include anything I am not privy to, which is likely quite a bit.  I just speak from experience talking to a number of people who have placed orders that either aren't on the forum at all or do not post and only lurk.
How many orders (and qtys in those orders) do you know of that aren't on the forum?
4633  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-04-23 Bitcoin startup CoinLab lands funding from Tim Draper and others, aim on: April 24, 2012, 03:20:57 PM
some of the players are volunteered to do the mining job but some other refused. and some of vlounteered one mining at faster speed but someone else slower. If the game players are start to competing with each other, will they start to "buy" mining power from GPUmax?

These are games that charge for subscriptions and in-game currency already.  So this is just another option of how to buy them.  In addition to being able to buy using PayPal and other methods, they can now pay for purchases with bitcoin-powered credits through CoinLab.

If coinlab is upfront about the potential higher electricity bill that comes with it then this could actually work. I wasn't trying to dish this investment, I actually want it to succeed because I think it would grow Bitcoin but it was just that reading the article I got the feeling they weren't going to be upfront about the electricity costs and are going pretend that idle gpu resources is all a player needs to offer to get those credits which if it is the case is going to be a huge turnoff once discovered IMO. I could be wrong tho.
I still disagree.

Does WoW have a disclaimer about your computer using more electricity while the game is running?  Does League of Legends?  Does any game, for that matter?

For anyone who knows that a computer uses more electricity under load, they would know that running this particular game would act in a similar manner.  For anyone who doesn't know, they probably won't leave the game running long enough to find out.  Or, if they do, and notice the increase, they'll think, "well gee, I probably shouldn't leave my computer on that long again."  I can't see very many people blaming the game developer for it.
4634  Other / Off-topic / Re: I visited BFL, any questions ? on: April 24, 2012, 03:14:26 PM
mem, I might agree with you if there was a good reason for them to be operating a long con.  But there's just not.

They have the most demand of ANY miner manufacturer right now, and that's not going to change for a long time.  They have a really cheap product for how much MH/s it runs.  Because demand is so high, they would likely make less money by conning everyone instead of just continuing to provide the product.  Not to mention, a multi-million dollar con would mean they'd definitely be on the run from the law and some serious investigators.  I doubt that's the position they want to be in...

Anyway, you're obviously welcome to think whatever you like, and if we all get scammed, you can point your finger and say "told ya so!"
4635  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-04-23 Bitcoin startup CoinLab lands funding from Tim Draper and others, aim on: April 24, 2012, 07:13:07 AM
This is doomed to fail from the start:

Quote
Under the plan, game makers will offer their users a chance to voluntarily install a program that makes their idle computing resources available for use by CoinLab, in exchange for in-game virtual goods and points.
CoinLab then plans to sell that spare computing time to the Bitcoin network, for use in Bitcoin “mining” — using computer processing to generate units of the virtual currency. The startup will pay game companies for the computing resources made available by their customers.

As soon as those who will volunteer their idle CPU resources get their first next bill for electricity they'll realize what is really going on and they'll stop volunteering. And that will be that.
I disagree.  You forget how desperate penniless gamers can be, especially those still living with their parents.  And a single rig isn't necessarily going to take up THAT much electricity to be immediately noticeable on the next electric bill.  Especially if the player opts to only mine while in-game (which is what the Forbes article seemed to allude to happening by default).  Even a constant 300w draw would only equate to $20 or so per month increase in the average electric bill.

And many people are clueless enough to think that a computer takes up the same amount of electricity when it is on, regardless of load.

JMO.

I hope bfl works out but to me it reeks of a long con.
Will keep buying up 2nd hand gpus until then Smiley
Yeah everything in the world is a long con, just because I said so. Roll Eyes
Hey, don't knock him.  If he's still buying GPU's, that means more BFL singles for the rest of us.  :p
4637  Economy / Marketplace / Re: ["WAIT LIST"] BFL Singles Order Date / Ship Date on: April 23, 2012, 08:52:09 PM
Update my order date to 3/13 if you would.  I sent in an order on 2/24, but apparently, BFL didn't receive the order somehow, or it got lost.  So, Sonny had to place a new order for me, and didn't get the "order date" in until 3/13.
4638  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SolidCoin 3.0 (aka MicroCash) will have a daily fee for each address you have. on: April 23, 2012, 06:12:57 PM
You know what they say... any publicity is good publicity!  Well, right now, you all are continuing to give solidcoin publicity.

Keep that in mind before you make another post in this thread...

4640  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BFL Single Order Date/Ship Date on: April 22, 2012, 05:23:51 AM
I'll remove Blackpropor's order after he verifies it. Thanks for the heads up.

Still waiting on my shipping confirmation since my order is next on the list.

@hashking: I thought about starting a new thread, just never did.
Here's Blackpropor's verification:
Ok, since people are waiting on my order to get shipped, and see how long it'll take them I have to confess. I've changed my order to 2 mini rigs.  Grin. Right, all single orders after mine are moved up the list and I'm not going to sell my place in line (I could though) Roll Eyes Instead, if yo feel like you could donate here is my address 14gBxD2pAGNTu9stEL7RxVjPD7iSeFp9Kn  Cheesy
