4621  Economy / Economics / Re: Is there any proof fractional reserve banking goes on to in the UK or globally on: February 24, 2020, 06:19:46 PM
Yeah fractional reserve banking only takes a hit if most of the economy takes a hit too. The general idea is that someone will probably buy the assets the bank holds as loans and even international banks could bailout a bank in the affected country to try to profit once the country's economy recovers (which is generally pretty likely unless debt is written off by law during that time which is probably unlikely as it'd reduce trust).

Banks with no collateralised debt still have the borrowers to call on for funds in a few years...

And if no one buys the collateral, we can just trick retail again.
4622  Economy / Economics / Re: Using of Blockchain in Election on: February 24, 2020, 06:11:28 PM
Yeah blockchain voting isn't a very good idea. The issue is that someone can get hold of someone else's keys or companies could ask their staff to hand keys over or something else like that - which may go unreported...
No government is going to implement these blockchain technology based voting system right away with the current-state where it is today. We have super brains and super cops to fine-tune the system from its today's state to possible "production-ready" state.

When they start learning how to airgap stuff then I'll agree with you on that one...

At the moment most "experts" are merely people that have tricked others into thinking they know better. Nothing will ever be completely safe, especially if the government controls it, and saying something will be is just making it more interesting for people to hack to vote themselves in...
4623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin core reindexing on: February 24, 2020, 06:04:25 PM
If the disk cam with a drive utility to check it, I'd suggest running that - it'll mark the bad cells.

Ssds with a io driver (most have them nowadays) should have a nice amount of ram to check the block they write to the drive. It's especially important to eject an ssd safely rather than pulling it out. And if it says drive in use, I'd shutdown the computer to avoid further issue. As the others have suggested an initial sync takes a long time when you get to the later years... And for a few months in 2017 it looks as if it gets stuck.

If it has to reindex again after this one then the corrupted file may need renaming (the last blk file it uses) afaik bitcoin core checks the last 7 on startup so you can already work out where the error may arise but it may not cause a problem anyway as core can usually overwrite it.

4625  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: February 23, 2020, 08:24:32 PM
I think this will all depend on the inflow to ChipMixer as to whether its viable.

If they have thousands of users a week then it might make sense to allow both. Otherwise privacy may reduce if its only one or two people who withdraw their chips as native addresses rather than legacy.
4626  Economy / Economics / Re: Is there any proof fractional reserve banking goes on to in the UK or globally on: February 23, 2020, 06:57:35 PM
now put into that mix that both the person who made first deposit and business owner want to withdraw their funds at the same time.

how will the bank manage that ?

By lending  from the central bank. Its generally advised you don't store much in bank accounts and banks arent encouraging saving as much anymore now.
4627  Economy / Economics / Is there any proof fractional reserve banking goes on to in the UK or globally on: February 23, 2020, 06:40:05 PM
Just going to use this post to explain what it is so if you have proof feel free to reply without reading this.

As I understand it (not looked at it recently) fractional reserve banking is a system that allows banks more earning power on money you put in while allowing the customer access to some of their funds.

For example (@10% reserve):
If you deposit $3000 into a bank account, the bank is able to lend out $2700 and keep $300 of your original $3000.
If this $2700 is then lent out to someone who wants to buy a new kitchen for example, they pay the cashier and the business owner receives the funds in their account. Now of this $2700 the bank is able to lend out $2430 and store $270 of the original funds as the reserve and this can continue on...

This often gets explained as a "concept" or "theory" but does this actually happen?

Since the commonly used example allows $1000 to become $9000 (I may update this if I get libre running). Edit: spreadsheet says $2912.37 as a floor of the number of new money produced with a 10% reserve).
4628  Economy / Economics / Re: How to stop the world recession that is soon coming. on: February 23, 2020, 02:43:53 PM
Govenments don't care about poverty, they just pretend to.

The only way to beat problems is through a system of democratic socialism. It's porrible to turn back to something like ww2 rations and say everyone gets a limited amount of food, clothes, healthcare, transport and shelter and they can work themselves up to a higher rate (or not).

Realistically if a government did this then they'd have to limit globalism and globalisation to ensure nothing gets in and out that goes undetected by them and no one can profit from the giveaways of the government.

Such socialism may cause large issues for agriculture and enterprise initially too so a country wouldn't want to be looking to collapse on a global stage.
4629  Economy / Economics / Re: In the past where taxes were honoured ~ on: February 22, 2020, 08:54:10 PM
In the current system this might be problematic as it essentially rewards big spenders and big blowouts of money...

The people buying the roads may not have been so thrilled with the concept either as they probably only did internal servers from within the government. Atm rich people are pretty well known for their work so I doubt it'd do much for them other than be a burden. Also the richest person probably just found ways to try to hide their wealth too or give a small amount to the second richest to stick them with the liability.
4630  Economy / Economics / Re: Corona Virus is a Fake Flag to destroy China! on: February 22, 2020, 03:40:41 PM

This is a conspiracy theory that can't be backed by any proof or facts.
The influence of the corona virus is exaggerated and there is social media hysteria around the virus for sure, but using a virus to damage the economy of China?Only because China wants to create a cryptocurrency.Really dude? I don't believe this.I don't think that Trump is that cruel.
He is dumb and a little bit crazy, but definitely not smart, sneaky and cruel.
The coronavirus is just a mutation of an animal virus, that moved from animals into people.
Shit happens in mother nature sometimes.

I don't think trump has to approve everything.... It could be "accidental" from scientific research or something...

I thought they disproved it moving from animals to humans also, the who or someone Wed's saying there were "artificial" aspects to the virus.

I don't think they'll have done it because of their cryptocurrency rules but they may have done it to reduce their economic power... Or to show up the government's lack of plans for an outbreak like this.
4631  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why bitcoin software project is not updated for a long time ? on: February 21, 2020, 11:36:47 PM
Websites go out of date much faster than active git repos...

If you want a specific project, they'll probably have an announcement here. If there's a change of protocol it's normally included in the list of bips on places such as the bitcoin wiki.
4632  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: February 21, 2020, 11:10:36 PM
I'm surprised they're even allowed as domain characters, surely someone would've thought that's a problem...?

Punycode attacks
The actual domain is: xn--chpmixer-31a.com

Anyhow, tried my luck, I've sent an email to namecheap about them, let's see if they care about it..

That's scary!

Yeah it's kinda something I'd have expected Web browsers to fix.

Wow that's good for namesilo's image, how long did it take them to get back to you?

It took them like 3 to 4 days. In matter of hours they reply to my initial email, giving me another link where I can give them a more detailed report.

And then it took them that many days before they took the site offline. Perhaps they have some internal process to follow like verifications of the real chipmixer site against the fake one which they unfortunately manage.

For both sides, it better to go off the innocent until proven guilty and it's probably better for them to do a bit of investigation first.

As well as they'd probably have to get a supervisor or manager to look over everything so 3 days is pretty fast in order to reduce people with control of the dns server to suspend an account.
4633  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: "The Travel Rule" - The crypto version of the US banking regulations. on: February 21, 2020, 11:02:56 PM
It's always interesting how new users come into the space and think cryptocurrency is better than what banks do or laundry mats used to.

You realise the thing with this is just so governments can track people and isn't for general privacy removal or anything...

Why do we assume bitcoin is better than banks for money laundering? It isn't, we just get told to trust what banks do and how they control the money supply. Also whyd they bring in polymer notes? The paper ones used to be sniffable by dogs (as far as law enforcement would say) in actuality, now people can remove the smell before travelling through airports...

In addition, what's anyone going to do with a mere €1000, fucking nothing... I don't care how much a country thinks it can control another, the fact is they normally can't without making themselves looking like fools.
4634  Economy / Economics / Re: Bank create money out of thin air faster than you! on: February 21, 2020, 10:52:26 PM
You're sort of right and you're also wrong like the others have said.

Banks can't exactly print money, what they can do is make a balance sheet of assets of liabilities and there can be more of either than the other in actual amount.

I think since aig sold $78 million in assets for $500 million in derivatives (default swaps) every bank has become more stringent on what they actually do while lending. Inflation "taxes" people but it also encourages businesses to employ you since their assets today can be worth more tomorrow as money supply grows.

@hugeblack, I've never heard it be called the mouse race and instead heard of the rat race. And there are different people, those who are in the rat race and active participants that just want to keep building wealth and those who have a solid target while they're in it imo.
4635  Economy / Speculation / Re: Need to be more cautious than ever on: February 21, 2020, 05:56:44 PM
An acceptable state, however buying whenever with well defined stop loss shouldn't cause any problems as long as you're happy with the sl and the losses you may make...
The only aspect i avoid in the BTCitcoin market is putting a stop loss as the market could recover in a moments time and then you end up in a heavy loss, this is a unique market where stop loss function has its own risk as the market recovers quickly as it went down and you wont get a chance to enter again during that period. The only concept i follow is to wait for the market to recover and the idea of halving and a rally is still eminent and with that confidence i would not risk the stop loss function. In any other scenario it is a great option.

Yeah I do a lot of leveraged trades so I have to determine an accurate liquidation and stop loss price before I open the trade... Typically speaking if your stop is anywhere from 5-20% for a short term trade, you're normally alright. With less risk at the 20 end and further down.

If you're not using leverage stops don't matter unless they're at key levels. If you had a stop at $5000 for example then you'd have done well in 2019 when we stumbled below that mark.
4636  Economy / Economics / Re: Any Forex Brokers That Accept Crypto? on: February 21, 2020, 05:53:40 PM

Etoro are one in Europe for example, they allow conversion and then usage I'm not sure if they allow direct usage and they're one of those companies that'll keep trying to call you until you block their number (or answer them) ...

This got me laughing hard here.
Isn't suppose to be marketing strategy ?
Or don't we subscribe to that as being serious minded?  Grin Shocked

Anyway, I can understand and can relate to that.
I have a broker like that too, trying to win you.

Yeah they wanted you to hold at least $5000 in assets with them so they can make something from the interest and in return will give you a personal advisor.

It's a good idea if you have no idea what you're doing, but if you do it just gets annoying and you have to block them pretty quickly.
4637  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Looking for a site with past BTC/USD monthly averages on: February 21, 2020, 01:26:17 AM
I've used these in the past I think: https://m.uk.investing.com/crypto/bitcoin/historical-data

They have a monthly option, I think they have opsen, close, high low and average but I'm not entirely sure. Otherwise yahoo finance might have more data.
4638  Economy / Economics / Re: Corona Virus is a Fake Flag to destroy China! on: February 21, 2020, 12:51:26 AM
Tbh it wouldn't surprise me if this was all orchestrated by the US.

A few us citizens caught it, I don't think any from the UK did...

There are clear advantages to shutting down China... The US is disappointed that China controls most of theirarlet, they're the only country that produces a lot of electrical products like lithium ion batteries (Australia make some too). Much like the killing of one of irans military operatives this could just be a case in the long line of US medelling to ensure it stays on top...

China has a problem witb mortality from this disease too because of its pollution levels. Pollution inhibits some of the functions of the lungs and if coronavirus leads to pneumonia then that's the reason it can be deadly.
4639  Economy / Economics / Re: Any Forex Brokers That Accept Crypto? on: February 20, 2020, 11:17:06 PM
You can get buy a plane ticket with crypto and then fly to the desired foreign country with an Bitcoin ATM and exchange your coins to cash there.  Cool

Most major high streets in most major countries will have them.

Coinbase probably allow euros to be used everywhere (probably)?

Etoro will let you withdraw to PayPal imo...

@quakie, the best way to get anywhere is going to be by sitting down for a few hours and looking through different sites relevant to your country. Or at least tell us the currency you want to convert to so we can check if a site will accept that.
4640  Economy / Speculation / Re: Has anyone tried leveraging hodl positions with bank loans? on: February 20, 2020, 10:45:14 PM
As with any leveraging, it depends on what the interest rate is.  If you can get cheap money, you can leverage as much as you like--but no, I've never used a bank loan for any such purpose and I think it's a bad idea to take out a loan in order to speculate on crypto.  I think I remember in 2017 that there was someone who posted here that he was using his credit card to basically do the same thing as what you're proposing, OP.

Leverage/margin can get you into trouble very quickly--especially in the bitcoin market.  If you're considering doing this, OP just be careful.  If your investments tank, you're stuck with a loan that probably has a high interest rate.  And given how volatile bitcoin has been, I think it's just a bad idea.

Yeah I'd thought as much, it was something one of my contacts mentioned in passing when the price was around $6k.... I was just curious as that'd have made some nice profit already but with quite the amount of risk attached to it...

I had been curious of the idea with stocks too after the next recession - borrow an amount at 4% and pay back a lot less (EU markets make about 7% a year). So you could leave it as a segragated asset and use income to pay it off...

You don't remember "sold the house" in 2017? Of a guy who either sold or remortgaged his house and bought in at $20k... Right at the top.
