4661  Economy / Speculation / Re: Need to be more cautious than ever on: February 18, 2020, 08:06:35 PM
An acceptable state, however buying whenever with well defined stop loss shouldn't cause any problems as long as you're happy with the sl and the losses you may make...

Now may be a good time to start scalping or trading with smaller amounts though since we may be around this resistance for a while and we may even fall back and not accelerate through.
4662  Other / Meta / Re: Is there any guidelines available on clickbait links? on: February 18, 2020, 05:43:42 PM
I too am in favour of new rules to end this. I'd say the rule could be something like: "link dumps are not allowed".

Lately, I see more and more users who only post links to external websites. That's advertising, and thus not allowed, but somehow they don't just all get banned. There's not even any discussion value, as they abandon the topic instantly, after which the sig spammers take over.

It's for marketing purposes, because when they get posted on public forums the search engine crawlers go and visit them and use that in their page rankings (from an anonymous source)...

Yeah a new rule wouldn't be bad but it'd be hard to work out what is link spam and what clearly isn't.

Maybe "any unfamiliar (not from major site) links posted should have relevant quotes from the page copied on that post". And those quotes can be used to decide if the thread would class as spam or not.
4663  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I'm considering becoming a full node on: February 18, 2020, 05:34:50 PM
Not my topic but question to the people replying to this - what kind of security risks (if any) come with running a full node from your residential connection?

As long as you're network has strict rules, you'll normally be fine.

There are always vulnerabilites in certain things but as long as you ensure security remains pretty tight and you don't try to change any settings you don't understand (typically on the router) and the firewall remains as strong or only allows connectios to go through to that computer (on the 8333 port) then you should be safe.

4664  Economy / Economics / Re: Using of Blockchain in Election on: February 18, 2020, 05:30:50 PM
Yeah blockchain voting isn't a very good idea. The issue is that someone can get hold of someone else's keys or companies could ask their staff to hand keys over or something else like that - which may go unreported...

Actually, why can't people vote in other towns? My firend voted in an election for a country 10000 miles from here by handing his ballot to the ambassador so not being able to merely move a registration from one twon to the next is rediculous.

In the UK (and probably other systems, votes are counted like this):
3.1 Votes cast at any government election, general, regional, or local have traditionally been hand counted. The process is complex and laborious.
  • At the close of the polling stations each ballot box is sealed, and a statement of the number of ballot papers issued is attached.
  • The boxes are then transported to counting centres, emptied and sorted before hand counting begins by volunteers.
  • The number of votes recorded at the count is cross checked with the number of ballot papers issued, and any discrepancies are immediately investigated by the Returning Officer.
  • For ballot papers that are not clearly marked, have indeterminate markings or may be spoilt, adjudication takes place by the returning officer in consultation with political party agents.
  • Once the votes are collated the returning officer ‘declares’ the result of the election.

3.2 Simply put, the electronic counting of votes (e-counting) replaces counting by people by counting by machines.
  • When the ballot boxes arrive at the count centres they are emptied and the ballot papers are fed into large scanners that check the authenticity of the papers, read off the votes cast and accumulate the votes electronically.
  • The number of ballot papers counted through the scanners is reconciled with the numbers tagged to the box.
  • If the scanners reject ballot papers because they have indeterminate markings or are spoiled then adjudication takes place by the returning officer.
  • Once the votes are collated the returning officer ’declares‘ the result of the election.
If there machine is airgapped it'd be pretty impossible to hack it without being present in the same room as it and the counting is normally done in either public galleries or under the watchful eyes of teams of volunteers. It'd be hard to fake the result and probably not worth the effort (in at least several hundred counting centres).
4665  Economy / Speculation / Re: Solid Foundation For a Future Price Increment on: February 17, 2020, 10:37:28 PM
I'm not sure much has really changed, we're the fundamentals not strong over the past 2 years? We had a lot of new innovations in the space. Most still exist now though....

It will be interesting to watch/trade an upcoming cycle since we're almost alligned with where we were in 2016 at this time (if not earlier then than we are now). Which means, if the current trajectory continues we could see ~$16k in july/August if too many hearts haven't been broken before them and withdrawn from the race...

I don't follow mainstream media or twitter so it's interesting that theyre covering this sort of stuff already...
4666  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Mining IP Addresses on: February 17, 2020, 10:25:06 PM
What exactly are you looking for? Addresses of every node can be found at bitnodes: https://bitnodes.earn.com/

Since most people mine with pools now it'll be hard to find the ip of those miners.

The pool likely forwarded the block imo and it could go through different explorers, but blockchain.com may still show a "relayed by" function that allows you to find who first sent the block to them but not who first mined it.
4667  Economy / Speculation / Re: Solid Foundation For a Future Price Increment on: February 17, 2020, 09:33:45 PM
FOMO --- increases ---> Demand --- increases ----> Future expectations -- increases ----> HODL ---- increases ---> scarcity ---- increases ----> price --- increases ---> Media & Public Awareness --- increases ----> FOMO & the cycle repeats.

I don't think anyone disagrees with that being the cause especially at a run/blow off top, the question I'd wonder is whether we're already nearing the start of that cycle or not?

There can sure be minor cycles within other larger ones as there is probably one within the whole cycle so far (this is the hodlers). But we can say that the more the price moves, the more people want to get involved in the space especially when it's covered by media and the happier they seem to be to lose what they have in the hopes of gaining quite a nice return.

Coompare this to 2015/2016 where people saw 100x on their investment for example if they cashed out at the top. And if they didn't, wer're already back nearing 50x now.
4668  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Exchange managed to lose 7000- 13000 BTC in Non Payment?(BTC downtrend reason?) on: February 17, 2020, 09:20:22 PM
I hadn't heard of that exchange, why would they be trusted with 13K btc?

I'm guessing they're not acutally that big and trusted when compared with coinbase or the others (bitfinex, bitstamp etc)... So it probably won't have much of an impact on the price...

And why would you come clean on a massive post on reddit, everything just says they probably scammed or wanted something else from it.
4669  Economy / Economics / Re: Are crypto hedge funds still a good business? on: February 17, 2020, 02:10:19 PM
It probably depends on what you're trying to do and how trusted/well insured you are.

There's probably a market for basket funds and managed funds targeting towards the older generations that may not be accustomed to technology but you might be more usable and trusted if you can get someone to insure you or sell your idea to a company instead of going it alone. A lot of the previous funds were probably scams in a lot of cases.
4670  Other / Meta / Re: Boring Arguments Section Room on: February 16, 2020, 09:56:36 PM
Just a hint: it might be a good idea not to name the trolls that annoy you especially since that's what they're probably after.

Is there a reason you guys can't be diplomatic anymore with stuff and just ignore them?

I have enough issues with people in the real world that try to start arguments without ANY FACTS TO BACK IT UP or sometimes even a purpose with what they're saying... Can we go back to having lovely little conversations about innovations in the crypto space and maybe suppliment it with a bit of word politics and science every so often.

It would be difficult to police, as opinions are so subjective. For example, look at the number of members who support vaccination, and the ensuing crippling of children, and are unable to provide any supporting evidence to support medium term research findings.

Word in the scientific community states that 20% of flu cases were prevented by the vaccine a few years ago... Suffice to say it looks as if they were just hoping for a placebo or to make it look like they were doing something.

Certain vaccines such as the MMR apparently have a 99% success rate over 20 years however. You mentioned toxic compounds and the only thig I could find was an organic salt but it's a very tiny dose, and everything's toxic in a high enough quantity. We're talking about points of a milligram and 20 miligrams per kilo of person being lethal (but I'm not entirely sure on the stat).

4671  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Very slow synchronizing with Bitcoin Core on: February 16, 2020, 05:13:06 PM
Is it an external drive)(one plugged in) or an internal one that you can't remove?

Was it a NAS or computer drive and not a backup drive too if it didn't come with the machine...
4672  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Yes, the Keepkey is a worthless black bricklet on: February 16, 2020, 05:08:49 PM
Ahhh @lucius it was a seed passphrase and not actual passphrase you needed to set (I ought to get round to doing that) since the actual pass phrase on the gui can't be longer than 20 characters afaik. Although I think people would go for the casascius in a physical attack anyway if they found out where both are stored.

@the Pharmacist, yeah I was kinda curious as to the criticisms of that device too since you had one for keepkey 🤣.

If it has a lot of additions and is more complex to fully complete the setup it does sound like once you've done that you'll continue to be able to keep accessing everything so it might just be a short few hours to try to get everything working for you to not have to set much up again in the future and have something fully usable.
4673  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I'm considering becoming a full node on: February 16, 2020, 04:57:04 PM
Yeah it's not a fast way for getting a good revenue stream. But if you're not paying for electric or anything then it's an idea...

And you don't have fees to open a node, just fees if you start a channel. If you help someone else start theirs you don't pay their fees.
4674  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Yes, the Keepkey is a worthless black bricklet on: February 15, 2020, 10:03:21 PM
Have you tried a trezor?  (I kept thinking that while reading your post)...

Yeah I seem to remember the keep key being about $20 so there might be a reason for that... Coinbase claim to accept card (haven't used it because I'm not paying the visa fees).

I'd like more altcoins with the trezor, maybe the ledger has them, but you could also probably get away with some simple software solution to allow it - like some coins have it built into the site tools afaik.

I don't know how much I like brave, was it just a chromium based browser you needed or was it exactly brace (might have been sponsored or something if so)? I don't even like putting metamask on Firefox as it can edit your clipboard.
4675  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Boom and bust with Bitmex on: February 14, 2020, 07:23:19 PM
I think somewhere between 70 and 90% of contracts traders end up losing money so it's a handy statistic to keep in mind....

Also, to be fairly good at trading you need a good resilliance and lack of emotions. Considering you only started off with 0.15BTC I don't think you should feel too bad about losing it all since you could've got 9. But in future, I'd suggest every time you go over a certain amount that you try to pull out your initial capital or even a third of it. You can't build anything with nothing...

It's also handy to remember that a strategy you used once might not work again the next time so adjust everything accordingly.

Were you going all in, that must've been a huge move from putting in 9BTC since the limit on bitmex is 50BTC so you couldn't realistically go much over 6x leverage... You're going to need a tighter stop loss too in that case to ensure the position doesn't liquidate, the insurance fund for bitmex takes quite a big cut of a trade too...
4676  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I'm considering becoming a full node on: February 14, 2020, 06:40:04 PM
Hahhaha, what is then the usefull thing of Bitcoin Core ?
When you have it running but nothing get for it ?
If you want to earn something and can keep a node running then you can try running a lightning node but I'm not sure how much you can earn from the fees of on - it'll be very little atm though.
4677  Other / Meta / Re: Add link to the rules in the PMs for deleted posts. on: February 14, 2020, 04:52:01 PM
When deleting a post, mods (self-moderators don't count in this) should get the options in check boxes among which they can select the options which are the reasons for the deletion of that post, and then those selected reasons should be included in the PM sent to the user after that post of theirs got deleted.

As hilarious said above, an issue with this would be that there are no fixed rules.

But to that point, they could write out a few pretty obvious reasons for themselves to start with and send those out to people with a potential edit box.

There might be an issue with going into the specifics of a cause though as it might make users want to contest their case and thus make a lot of threads on meta but it may still give others closure.
4678  Economy / Speculation / Re: Buy only bitcoin or take chances in altcoin casino? on: February 14, 2020, 04:00:51 PM
If for example in a few years, 5btc becomes worth 1 eth them you'll still have 1 eth from now...
I am not seeing a situation like this even in the distant future.

A lot of this depends on how much risk you're willing to take and also how likely you think bitcoin is to come out on top over the years (not just in 2020).
If you invest in BTCitcoin well before the fork then you have already taken the risk to invest in the long run which means you hold major forks and if that is the case there is nothing to worry and despite saying that only BTCitcoin will come out on top rather than any other alt coin in the market.

Were dealing with a very volatile market. Eth has overtaken bitcoin in price according to coinbase in the past (I thik it was coinbase anyway).

The point being: what if another, much better currency comes out that can threaten the post of bitcoin. Bitcoin is high in price because its secure and well known, if another currency can do both of those but be more user friendly the there's a chance it can take over.

Some forks won't be held by you such as newly created coins, I doubt a chain split would cause much competition in the network yet at least...
4679  Other / Meta / Re: Add link to the rules in the PMs for deleted posts. on: February 14, 2020, 11:49:04 AM
I don't think sending them the entire list of rules is really that helpful, you could maybe point them to it at the top of the screen (like until they become a JR member, there's an additional banner that says "please read the rules" or something like that).

I personally think I first found the rules once i'd been here for at least half a year (although I actually didn't get many posts deleted in that time, just the usual number)...

I don't know if a mod could help me on this but do they actually read the reason? It might be possible to submit the reason through to the person once the mode has checked it and deems it an acceptible reason, as getting them to write their own short piece would be a lot more effort than it normally requires.

As a forum that undermods in a lot of areas, this may just be something that can still just be sorted in meta though.
4680  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Mining shipping container location on: February 14, 2020, 12:15:06 AM
Why would yuu want to incorporate an llc? If it's just that there are a few people interested you might be able to make a non incorporated partnership if you don't need the debt protection (but you'll need schemes in place to ensure you weren't trying to default on the electric company anyway to dissolve the company). You may end up paying kore too if you make it an llc then just a regular partnership.

(I'm with the assumption every/most country allows for sole traders to function as well as corporations).
