No idea if they are around or not.
But I can say they have not reached out to me despite a few attempts at pinging them.
If they're not active anymore, did they set the CURE payouts for folding to autopilot or something?  Obviously people are still earning CURE through the folding at home program, and it has to be paid out by some mechanism.

I am very interested in this, so please keep this thread updated if you glean any more information about the team's response to the shorelinecrypto listing or anything else.

No idea, but have you been to curecoin.net today...

4685  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning doesn´t solve the scaling problem on: January 01, 2021, 03:17:24 PM
With that being said, not all "poor" people will want to run a bitcoin node since even the current 300GB and the 1MB size is way too huge for them, but when we make suggestions of increasing block size to 16MB or lift the cap altogether, we have to evaluate the technology capabilities worldwide and not just within 5-10 developed countries, just my 2 bytes on the subject.

My mechanic likes to say "you can pay me now, or you can pay me later, either way to fix the problem I am getting paid."

If we increase the block size then yes, running a node will be more money as you will need more drive space and more ram. (pay me now)

If we just use sidechains, (lightning, liquid, etc.) then the data size is still there BUT it's just in another database.
And you have the added complexity of running another app / database / whatever. (pay me later)

And if you and I are not connected that way (I am using lightning you are using liquid) then we are back to settling on the main chain.

It's not that any particular way is inherently better or worse, it's just that there is not a one size fits all solution so they all have their give and take.

Replying to all without quoting:

Even here in the US (NY) you don't get static IP unless you pay for it usually along with other "required" upgrades.
Most providers classify it as a business class service which is a lot more. But in reality you don't need static for anything BTC related.

But, outside of the initial download you really don't need that much up or down.

As ETFbitcoin said with compact blocks it's actually a small propagation. You still have to have a copy of the mempool on your node so that is where the bandwidth is needed. \
Block size really does not matter at that point (much) 1M, 2M, 4M if you are running a node you still have to have the full current mempool if you are really mining.

For some reason people have gotten it into their heads that running a node requires a stupid amount of power all the time.
Yeah, for the initial sync more ram more CPU is better but a RPi4 does a fine job of it.

Using Amazon US store:
RPi4 with metal case for cooling and power supply $85: https://amzn.to/3hyi2H2
1TB USB SSD $100: https://amzn.to/3hyznzv

All you need after that is a micoSD card so for under $200 you have a fulling running node.

And here is the fun kicker. You can be running you own lightning node too.
There are at least 2 "nodes in a box" that you can install that do all the work for you.

mynodebtc: https://www.mynodebtc.com/ bitcoin / lightning and some other stuff all ready to go. You can pay $99 to unlock more features if you want but its 100% functional without doing that. AND it allows you to use both your BTC & Lightning node on TOR out of the box.

raspiblitz: https://github.com/rootzoll/raspiblitz A bit better setup, not as user friendly, does a bit less BUT I have had one up close to a year now with no issues that I did not create myself

Not I know in many parts of the world where $200 is a ton of money. I don't have a good answer for that. Yes, you can probably put together a used PC system for a lot less, but other then that I have no good idea.

4687  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning doesn´t solve the scaling problem on: January 01, 2021, 03:07:10 AM
...I can't even propagate a 1MB block in a timely manner. By increasing the block size you simply send many players out of the game....

At this point in time how many people who do not have good fast internet are really mining to a local node?
Coming from a 1st world county as you put it, I could be seeing this wrong but...
If you are running a mining farm that has enough power to realistically find a block, between the hardware and the cooling and everything else is good bandwidth that much more? I am not being snarky, I just don't know.

If you are running a small home miner as a "lottery" miner. You really should be mining to a solo pool out there. Between hardware issues, network issues, etc. It's probably not worth doing it yourself. Hell, I can barely keep a small server up for 2 minor scrypt coins. And it's on a real (if old) Dell server in a real data center.

I posted in BayAreaCoins' thread about getting Curecoin listed on his exchange, and he said he'd consider it.  We shall see what comes of that.

I like everything I see here... we should be able to list this no problem.

I'll speak with Xploited today when he wakes up. Smiley

Edit:  2% of the total reward was distributed to people who donated to project development. The other 3% is dedicated to Curecoin developers

Who are these folks ^ are they still around?

No idea if they are around or not.
But I can say they have not reached out to me despite a few attempts at pinging them.
At a guess, it's all a side project for them and they get to stuff when they get to it.
OR
They only respond to communication from certain places that I have not found yet.

As others have pointed out above, if you are going to use video cards / your PC to mine there are many much more profitable things to mine.
If you are going to use them to run folding@home anyway because it really is a worthwhile project, then it throws off a few pennies a day and why not.

Well I finally got off my ass and got some form of a pool working.
It's just a bare-bones UNOMP setup at the moment.
Will be doing more work on it over the next few days (yeah...right).

Website = http://unknownminingpool.com
Stratum = stratum+tcp://stratum.unknownminingpool.com:3256
Stratum Port = 3256
Username = your NDL address
Password = x

Automated payouts every 10 minutes
Minimum payout 10000 NDL (will probably lower that later)

Use at your own risk, I just put it up quickly since the other pool has been down for months and due to other circumstances I have no idea when I'll really be able to put time into it.

I am curious, if I run Nvidia GTX 1050 card 24 hours a day folding@home for curecoin, how much CURE I can earn on this GPU per day?

Not much. I have a pair of GTX 1660 and I'm getting ~4.5 a day
If you are in it just for profit there are betting things to mine.
But, it's the it's for a good cause, not just burning electricity to mine.
A mid range CPU will not get you much, but it will draw a lot less power.

4692  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Helping (usually new) People Choose Their Wallet(s) on: December 30, 2020, 09:22:29 PM
a paper wallet in a box project. But something like that is still needed. A RPi or similar, bolted to a small thermal printer. Push a button and a secure paper wallet prints out.
I wouldn't use/trust thermal paper for long term storage. It fades over time.

They make 20 year: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-LB3787-Premium-Thermal-Archive/dp/B01LYORNNX
And 25 year: https://buy.advantech.com/TSC-Archival-Receipt-Paper-TSCMR-300130-A-03/XDPM-MR300130-A-03/model-XDPM-MR300130-A-03.htm
Thermal paper can last a while, but yes I do see your point.
They also make micro sized inkjet printers.

But the point still remains, as I throw all of us under the bus together.
What are we doing as a group to help?

Yeah, it's great that we all hang out here and talk. And we do help others. But if *I* someone who spends his days working on servers and networks and knows crypto quite well. And my friend a somewhat knowledgeable computer user need more then a hour to print out a paper wallet we are not where we need to be for mainstream adoption.

I can apply for a credit card online at citibank, get approved, get an instant virtual number, buy something, have Citibank link my checking account and pay for what I just bought in less time.
*cough* might have done that Dec 24th for a last minute gift, but lets not talk about that......

I had another conversation the other day about hardware wallets vs other secure ways of doing stuff.
Since it's close to a year since this topic was last posted to, and since we are hovering at ATH, and the Ledger leak / hack, Aad in some interesting thoughts like this one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5303368.0  I figure it's time for a necro bump

The below are whit I think I see here on bitcointalk and other places:
*I* still think we as a group rely too much on telling people use hardware wallets without digging into why or how or where people are going to be needing it.
We also tend to push paper wallets for secure offline / cold storage.

Both are good but have their flaws, they require that the user really does have at least a little bit of tech knowledge.
I actually tried to have a friend who is not an idiot and a somewhat knowledgeable computer user generate and print an paper wallet. And...it took 90 minutes.
Guess what there are a bunch of new HP & Epson home printers that are Wi-Fi only no USB, it saves a buck I guess. And when he went to use the other printer in his house his laptop did not have drivers for it. So shutdown the process, connect back to Wi-Fi, download the proper driver and verify, disconnect from Wi-Fi and start again. Even better if they have a new Mac and a few other ultra portables that don't have the venerable USB A ports on them how many people have a USB C to B cable around?

I think we as a group need a nice flowchart about what can and should be done and how to go about educating people.

Personally I tried and failed to re-start a paper wallet in a box project. But something like that is still needed. A RPi or similar, bolted to a small thermal printer. Push a button and a secure paper wallet prints out. With tech where is it a small oled display is also not out of the question.

Just kicking around some thoughts and putting this back out there.

4694  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcoin LN considered an altcoin on Bitcointalk? on: December 29, 2020, 01:08:37 PM
Are there still people who really use the Currency exchange board to buy or sell Bitcoin for fiat?

Yes I am one of them. Probably do a trade every few months.

There are several high trusted, long term, members that use it.

There are also several members who unless you spend a lot of time there you will never know about because they spend 90%+ of their time trading.
They have decent trust and are here to do what they do. Yeah, you have to search a bit for them and read into their feedback a bit but they do exist.

4695  Bitcoin / Project Development / Mid Tier to High Tier Funding Lightning Node Provider(s) on: December 29, 2020, 12:38:48 PM
Not 100% sure if anyone would be interested in this or if it's even needed as a thing or if it's just a Dave issue but:
There are several places out there that I can think of off the top of my head that have stupid high minimums to connect to.
We are talking 100s if not 1000s of dollar minimums.
ln.pizza, bitrefill come to mind 1st but I know there are others.
I was thinking of setting up a node that connects JUST to one or both of them and then making it known that you can connect to my node(s) with my higher then normal but still a sane number minimum amount.

No idea if anyone cares or is really interested, I just got really annoyed yesterday when I saw 4 hops to get to ln.pizza for no reason other then I could not connect to them evn though I was going to open a $500 channel.

Part of me also has the attitude of fuck them if you want to keep those high numbers go ahead and loose business.

I posted on their discord channel as did honglu69 who runs the exchange.
The Pharmacist posted on their main forum.
Going to have to get to

twitter : https://twitter.com/CureCoin_Team
reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/curecoin/
facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Curecoin/

Just going to take a little time to get the word out.
Not to mention between Christmas / New Years / everything else going on there are probably fewer people actively looking at some of this stuff at the moment.

edit: there are no sell orders at the moment (9PM EST 29-Dec) the ones @30 & @35 both sold.

Just dropped it to $200 shipped anywhere in the US. That's about as low as it's going to go at this point.
Sold out at futurebit at the $375 price.

As I said in the above post I'll prep a SD card if you want me to.

I *think* I still have the 512MB MCU if I can find it I'll throw it in the shipping box.

If you have free electric and litecoin stays at the same price and difficulty it's only a 17 month payback. :-)

...I'd guess that he was just suicidally depressed, without much larger motive, ...

I remember for years seeing stories and discussions about how people tend to get more depressed around the holidays. And those who had issues with depression it got really bad really quickly.
Either it's become less of a problem (doubt it) or a less reported on issue (probably) or I just have tuned a lot of it out (also probably). But I really don't remember seeing as much about it in the last few years.

thanks for this - I am going to start using this paper for all the ones I generate for the chips I sell and/or fund.

PM me your address I'll send you a few sheets of revlar to play with.
Since it is hard and thick (heh heh heh he said it's hard and think) it might not be the easiest to get under the holograms of coins and such.

Much like the ones I sent to krogoth they are not white matched since most of them come from different batches.
Doing stuff like this it does not matter, but for archival contracts that fill binders it's noticeable. Different shades of white paper, 20 years ago I never would have thought that would be an issue in my life.
