4681  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Experimenting with Jalapeno firmware... on: June 26, 2013, 12:44:26 AM
received my dragon this evening. flashed the jally and...

*presto*

my 5.5 ghs jally is running @ 8.2 ghs  Cheesy

runs a bit warmer (35 vs 30) and it has 2 hardware errors in 10 mins (vs 2 per day before) but Im happy Cheesy

Ill post a HOWTO in a day or two.
4682  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: June 25, 2013, 01:49:02 AM
I just taped down the silver plastic bag the mobo came in.

thats the antistatic bag. not good, its mildly conductive. thats why its antistatic.

are there somewhere nightly builds of cgminer for win?

check windows-build.txt in the cgminer folder.

kinda involved to initially install mingw32 and set it up for cgminer but once done compiling for windows from git only takes a couple of minutes.
4684  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Joining the ASIC party, BFL Jalapeno question on: June 22, 2013, 11:28:29 PM
you need atmel studio 6.1 and a jtag cable. an old cut down 40 conductor IDE cable should work, I cut one down today but didnt test fit it yet. plus the source code from bfl of course.

when I get my dragon in a few days Ill post a quick howto.

at some point Im sure someone will find a cheaper programmer, but till then the dragon is the cheapest one that will guaranteed work.
4685  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Joining the ASIC party, BFL Jalapeno question on: June 22, 2013, 10:03:55 PM
I run mine caseless/fan blowing down and had a 10 C drop. 30 C now. didnt mine any faster though.

the best way to increase the hash rate is to flash it. AND keep it cool of course.
4686  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Experimenting with Jalapeno firmware... on: June 22, 2013, 01:16:49 AM
I bought this one, its the one danattacker mentioned earlier in the thread.

http://store.atmel.com/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:10500053

it does not come with a cable but Im sure you can cut down a 40 pin IDE cable, thats what Im planning to do..

my dragon will be here in a few days and when I flash my 5 ghs jally Ill post the results.

BTW if you have a heatpipe jally there is plenty of clearance for the cable under the fins.
4687  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Experimenting with Jalapeno firmware... on: June 21, 2013, 10:14:57 AM
I have high hopes for my 5 ghs jally.. but any increase is an increase.

my dragon programmer will be here in a few days, Ill be posting the results.

danattacker, which jtag port is used? there seem to be two?
4688  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Experimenting with Jalapeno firmware... on: June 20, 2013, 01:03:07 AM
It does not come with a cable.

I have the non-heatpipe version.

I'll help you out, it's not terribly complicated anyways. Good luck!

thats what I was hoping to hear Smiley

read the instructions, back up the original firmware, compile the jally code,  program it, compile cgminer from git, and away it goes (hopefully).

I hope not to need your step by step help, but I am glad you are offering.

4-7 days shipping time. plenty of time to whip up a cable.
4689  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Experimenting with Jalapeno firmware... on: June 20, 2013, 12:32:43 AM
NICE WORK!

OK, just ordered my AVR Dragon from atmel. gonna grab the 6.1 studio software.

did it come with the needed cable?

which heatsink do you have? mine is the heatpipe version, it may have more clearance than the aluminum one.

care to post fairly detailed instructions? Im good with electronics (olde skoole here, TTL stuff) but never programmed via jtag.
4690  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: June 18, 2013, 10:53:34 AM
If the thought of spending hours and hours of constantly tinkering and improving and setting up mining computers does not appeal to you, you'll probably really regret get into this .

back in cpu/gpu days initial setup and tuning did take time, but once set up, its just blowing the dust off every few months, and updating the miner software.

now with asic, you plug it in, run the miner. blow dust out every few months.

with bfls firmware out now you can go further and tune your sc stuff (I will be doing that) but its optional.

I monitor my rigs with anubis and kanos miner.php  (I use cgminer) via a WAMP server on one of my rigs. just click one link on any of my computers/smartphones/whatever and all the stats for all my gear is there on one page.

there is no more "constant tinkering" unless you want to for the fun of it. electronics is my hobby, so...

4691  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Jalapeno voltage? varies widely on: June 18, 2013, 05:06:02 AM
my jalapeno voltage varied with temp.

3.4v @ 44 C
3.1 v @ 30 C
4692  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Experimenting with Jalapeno firmware... on: June 18, 2013, 04:57:13 AM
With the recent release of the source code for the firmware, I decided to take a look at it and I installed AVR studio. The project loaded up and compiled fine.

is there any particular version of avr studio I need? Im definably going to be messing with mine.

Im hoping a cheaper programmer like this one will work:

http://www.fasttech.com/product/1023000-atmel-avr-jtag-usb-in-circuit-debugger-programmer

best of luck getting it going again!

4693  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Difficulty jumps 28% on: June 17, 2013, 05:20:03 AM
This "if you had kept the BTC..." thing.

I like mining, and have always sold half (or, preferably, directly buy stuff with them) and kept half.

the point of bitcoins is to USE them.

Do you like less bitcoins or more bitcoins? Buying a miner that generates less bitcoins than it cost to purchase it just leaves you with less bitcoins to use.

my point was, I get rid of half anyway. that has been my MO from the beginning.

Im in this for fun, supporting network security, buying stuff with bitcoins (directly if possible) and playing with new hardware/tech. and be part of the Grand Experiment.

sure, making money is nice; Im way ahead of the game at this point.
4694  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: ANUBIS - a CGMINER Web Frontend on: June 16, 2013, 04:12:13 PM
The Mtgox BTC/USD widget requires a web browser that supports websockets, such as Chrome or other Webkit based browsers.

just tried in chrome (win7), still blank.

looked into extensions for "web socket" too in case is was something like that, but no joy.

what am I missing?
4695  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Difficulty jumps 28% on: June 16, 2013, 04:59:24 AM
Personally, I paid for my asic in $ (which I converted to BTC) so I don't care if I earn the BTC back or not, only the $.
If I had paid in BTC (say I earned through mining) then it would be a different story.

I see this a lot, and I think it's kind of a fallacy: You made the decision to buy when BTC was a certain price, and the math told you that you would make back more BTC than you invested. Effectively, you gave up that amount of $ that you could have invested in BTC alone. If you don't earn back the BTC from the miner that you paid on it, it is a worse investment than just buying the BTC in the first place.

This "if you had kept the BTC..." thing.

I like mining, and have always sold half (or, preferably, directly buy stuff with them) and kept half.

the point of bitcoins is to USE them.
4696  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: ANUBIS - a CGMINER Web Frontend on: June 15, 2013, 05:16:29 PM
just installed the new version (along side the older version of anubis) on WAMP, win7 64bit.

runs great, except the BTC/Dollar part is blank, and my jalapeno is detected as "? ? ?"  lol. should be "BAJ". all the stats are correct though.

thanks!

friedcat for president !
Of any specific country? Cool

why, all of them of course.
4698  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Question about mining with a BFL 5GH/s on Android phone on: June 11, 2013, 10:28:22 AM
Yes, the problem is that it only has one micro (or mini, too lazy to look it up ATM) USB port.  Is there a way to use a splitter or something to run the data from the miner and power from the charger through the port concurrently?

something like this

http://www.amazon.com/Apricorn-Power-Adapter-Cable-AUSB-Y/dp/B000JIOHDE

with proper ends or adapters of course. use a usb charger to inject power to the Y, the jally ignores the power, the android charges and can talk to the jally.

What level of CPU usage are people getting using CGMiner 3.1.1?

I've got a Win7 x64 setup with a Core i7-3570k and getting about 25% CPU usage, hashing with just one USB Block Erupter.

I'm seeing about 60% on each of two cores. But the cpu is only runniing at 1Ghz so i don't expect much from it. running 4 erupters and a Radian 6570 GPU.

Im at 3 % on a pentium 4 3.0Ghz single core, with a 5830, bfl fpga single and a bfl jalapeno. cgminer 3.2.0, win xp.
4700  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL 7GH on: June 09, 2013, 12:11:14 PM
It is because  BFL messed 'up'  when they designed their unit they opted for a single heat-sink... (seems reasonable)

Unfortunately they did not work out that one chip, like a unicycle is very difficult to balance on. ESP. if it is at a corner

so to fix this mess they did the only unreasonable thing....  added 2 chips.

But wait... oh shit. we are now loosing money because we did not calculate for 2 good chips.. (and to try an work out a binnable formula for 2 semi-defective chips is WAY too expensive..)

Attempt to 'recover' some money by selling 'upgrades'  I.E by paying more money for something you already have... you can upgrade what you already have...

The sad thing about all this... is that if any of the BFL staff were researched or understood what they were doing, they would realize you can purchase "C0's"

Or in other words an "Empty" chip case with leads.....

The issue with the heat-sink and the in-ability of the chips to 'self level' was pointed out to them last  november.....

Only when you have  many years in production can you see a pitfall before it hits you.... it's not magic... its experience.
They were looking for engineers in Asia and I still have not heard anything back since Nov 2012...

?

bfl shipped an early jally with one working chip and one dead chip.

https://forums.butterflylabs.com/hardware-discussion/1983-grnbrgs-unboxing-teardown-new-bitforce-5-gh-s-sc-miner.html

this was verified by josh and the fact that only 1 led on the jally lights up (2 working chip jallys light up 2 leds).

so they have an easy out on the "balance a heatsink" deal.

2 chip jallys are out because it seems most of their chips cant bin out at 5 ghs so they run 2 of them at lower speed.

I do agree that bfl are complete amateurs when it comes to electronics though.
