4761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: October 19, 2013, 03:16:16 PM
It still amazes me how many people make fun of me for being involved in crypto. Some of these people are programmers, too! What that tells me is that bitcoin is an incredibly good idea, and their humor at the situation validates it for me. If nobody thought it was crazy, how could it be life-changing (e.g. the new class of wealthy elite)?

It's a shame really. I know some really smart and respectable people who brushed bitcoin off as a flash in the pan. And even if they're right, I'm disappointed that so many of them are so short sighted, given how brilliant some of their thoughts and ideas are.

It's even harder do watch as everyone I care for has their savings and earnings devalued from right in front of them, and there's nothing I can do. They don't get it, they don't want to hear it, and I feel like I'm the one taking crazy pills.

I hope I'm wrong. It would make life so much better for everyone.

comment of the year. i also hope beyond hope that i am the crazy one and the normies are the sane ones. vindication is not worth that price.
4762  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-10-18 CoinDesk: Shop at Walmart with bitcoin on: October 19, 2013, 12:16:02 AM
who cares if there is a proxy involved. you can still buy stuff from walmart with bitcoin, this is what we have all been waiting for, bitcoin is now almost as liquid as cash. the significance of this can not be easily overstated.
4763  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: egifter accepting bitcoin is HUGE, why no uproar? on: October 19, 2013, 12:03:40 AM
seriously guys, in one fell swoop the question of "what can i do with a bitcoin" became "what cant i do with a bitcoin" and all i hear are crickets. egifter has made bitcoin almost as liquid as usd and no ones talking about it.

i dont understand. is it a scam? are they just a poorly run business? i mean I'm looking at the prospect of buying my groceries with bitcoin next time i go to the store, how is this not of monumental significance?

I did not know about this. Will be making a test purchase in a few minutes  Grin

please let me know how it turns out!

4767  Economy / Economics / Re: Chase Bank limits withdrawls, Bans international wires on: October 18, 2013, 04:03:08 AM
Limits on cash withdrawals are everywhere. Most bankers are not comfortable having large quantity of cash readily available in their drawers. It just increases the risk of crime. In every bank I know if you want to withdraw a large quantity of cash, you have to call in advance to make sure there will be cash when you want it. Most often, they also have limits. Like with a credit card, you can't withdraw over a given amount per week. With the fight against tax evasion and money laundering always intensifying, we may expect the current situation to get worse.

What I don't understand is the complete ban of all international wire transfers. that's crazy. Could there be something wrong with Chase? They've got to have plenty of customers doing business abroad, and they'll have no other choice but to change bank.

i sold a house once and asked for cash. what they did was give me 20,000 write a new check for the value of the original check -20,000 and i just took that check to the next bank and rinse and repeat. i mean i guess 20k is a limit on cash withdrawals but its a pretty large limit. thats just my anecdotal experience though, idk if it represents the norm or not.

The status quoe, by definition, cant change the world.
4769  Economy / Economics / Re: Invest in Bitcoin, Gold or Silver? on: October 18, 2013, 03:52:31 AM
I have been a client of a company in Istanbul for four years trading foreign exchange.  They have returned an average of 3.5%/month over the four years.

I have bank accounts in Australia, UK and Thailand.

The problem is when you wish to withdraw funds it is taking longer and longer.  The reason given is the banks and AML laws which are the problem.  I have now been waiting more than six weeks for a funds transfer.

I am concerned that I am holding too much with the one company.

I only found out about Bitcoin about three months ago and have since purchased.  Average purchase price to date is US$111.00/BTC.

I am unsure if I should invest more in Bitcoin or go with gold and silver, or, a combination of the three.

I am considering using - http://www.bullionvault.com/guide/gold/Ready-to-buy-gold#section-Ready-to-buy-gold-Insurance

It would be nice if BullionVault accepted Bitcoin, they do not at this time.

I realise all your eggs should not be in one basket.

I feel gold and silver are quite low at present and there is the possibility of good gains.

I really do not trust banks.

Any thoughts, thank you?

3.5% a MONTH? wow they must be market oracle's because I've never seen that kind of success long term working out. I would stay with them if they are offering 3.5% a month. WHo is it?

sustained 3.5 per month REEKS of ponzi to me.
4770  Economy / Economics / Re: Invest in Bitcoin, Gold or Silver? on: October 18, 2013, 03:50:54 AM
just remember, as this experience should have already taught you, if you dont hold it you dont own it! asside from that we cant tell you what assets to hold, that depends on your values. do you want low risk high safety, or do you what high risk high return? its ranked like this, gold is most safe with lowest return, silver is in the middle, and bitcoin is high risk high return.
4771  Economy / Economics / Re: IT IS TIME: Move Your Money Out of the US Banking System on: October 18, 2013, 03:46:31 AM

Within the last 24 hours, I have learned of two major banks that are making it difficult for you to send international wires or draw out large amounts of cash. Both JPMorganChase and HSBC USA have instituted new policies which will make it difficult for you to withdraw your funds in certain ways. This is not good. There are apparently some workarounds relative to these policies, but just try setting up those workarounds when you want to move your money during some kind of panic.

...Bottom line: You are playing with fire if you keep any serious amount of money in a US bank.

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2013/10/it-is-time-move-your-money-out-of-us.html

And what are the alternatives?  Mattress? Doomsday bunker?  It's not like the paper money will be worth anything if the whole banking system crashes down anyway.

food, water, ammunition, bitcoin, gold or silver.

if none of those than yes cash is a less bad option. imagine that you are right, imagine that the banking system crashes and cash and checkbook money both become worthless. it could be the case that checkbook money becomes worthless before cash, in which case you could potentially unload your cash before other people realize that it is worthless and leave someone else holding the bag.

great idea. unfortunately the government would never let it happen. we can dream though.
4773  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi identified, now what? on: October 17, 2013, 08:19:27 PM
The only reason to identify Satoshi is to use his humanity to discredit Bitcoin.
Exactly... and to distract from understanding Bitcoin for what it is and isn't— whatever it's creators motivations were Bitcoin is an open and transparent artifact, I feel that we've been blessed beyond belief that when we argue about Bitcoin those arguments can be settled simply by the fact of what it is and without endless appeals to authority and speculation about its creators intentions. Bitcoin is what Bitcoin does. Fixing on its creation sullies it.

exactly! as an example look at how quickly snowdens revelations turned into stories about snowden and not about his revelations.
4774  Other / Politics & Society / Re: why bitcoin isnt illegal and will not be made illegal on: October 17, 2013, 05:13:27 PM
i know that if the government outlawed bitcoin and bitmit moved to the darknets i would participate. i suspect many many others in the libertarian community would also. granted we would need some network effects before the dark nets could offer lower prices than walmart. but in time they probably would because there would be little to no taxation or regulation in the supply chain. goods would be produced in the freest jurisdiction and imported with out duities the distributed by grey market actors. early on these economies would be built up by activists and it wouldn't be in the interest of ordinary people to become agorists out of self interest, that is something that would have to come with time.
4775  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Study: Everyone hates environmentalists and feminists on: October 17, 2013, 04:30:24 PM
Both these movements are artificially driven by the state. Basically an excuse for socialism; increased state power.

Lol, more paranoia please Roll Eyes
You might dislike it, but girls got paid less than boys and they are not more stupid.

I think that it is kinda unfair.

These movements are state subsidized, this isnt anyone's opinion and it isnt paranoia, its demonstrable.

if you take all of the men on earth and average their pay, and take all of the woman on earth and average their pay, one of the groups will necessarily be payed more than the other. the chances that they would happen to be payed the exact same amount is 1 against ~infinity. suppose its woman and not men, should men start menannist rallies to combat this injustice?

it isnt unfair, woman take huge leaves of absence when they are pregnant and nursing. should the employer be forced to eat this cost? if so why? if so than thats unfair to the employer. if not than the employer must offset this cost somehow, the natural conclusion is slighly lower wages for female employees.

im not sure which of the two groups is dumber than the other but the same principal applies from my earlier paragraph. by any metric you chose, if you average the scores of men and then average the scores of woman one of the two groups will necessarily score higher than the other. i dont know which of the two groups is more intelligent but one is necessarily more intelligent than the other. so by considering this fact we can deduce that by saying "girls got paid less than boys and they are not more stupid." this necessarily means that boys are more stupid. why do you suppose boys are more stupid than girls?

sure there was some serious sexist bullshit in the past. woman not being allowed to work or own land. but we are past all of that. at this point feminists dont want equal treatment, they already have that, they want sexism against men and that is why people dont like them.
4776  Other / Politics & Society / why bitcoin isnt illegal and will not be made illegal on: October 17, 2013, 03:57:45 PM
If governments were to make bitcoin illegal than that would stop people from using it about as well as making cannabis illegal has stopped people from smoking pot. The only real effect of making it illegal would be to drive legitimate markets underground. we would see websites like the silk road where you could buy shaving creme, bath tissue, or those little coolaid packs. This would back them into a position where it would be politically untenable crack down on markets that are so apparently benign while at the same time people participating in this economy would be building an infrastructure that was parallel to the white economy but entirely disconnected from it. in short they would be inviting agorism, they would be creating a situation where it was in the economic interest of normal non activists to unwittingly become agorists purely out of self interest and this would reduce peoples perceived and real dependance on the state.

this is why we have the feds cracking down on silk road and opening their arms to white market bitcoin businesses. they want to pull this thing into the white markets. of course if you think through the logic its apparent that this is still not a good thing for their money printing monopoly so of course they would like to just make bitcoin not exist if that was possible. the only reason they are trying to pull it into the white markets is because they know they cant kill it, the learned this from napster and bittorrent, they are simply choosing the option that is to them less damning.

what does this mean for us? well its a good thing for the future wealth of early adopters, its probably a bad thing for the future health of the species as a whole. here i think for the same reasons that it would be on net bad for them from their perspective to make bitcoin illegal, it would be on net good for the world. unfortunately they missed their own feet this time.
4777  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bye bye bitcoin on: October 15, 2013, 02:02:02 AM
who would sell their last bitcoin when there is the possability that a single bitcoin could be worth tens of thousands of dollars some day. you could atleast hold onto one on the off chance, just so you arnt kicking yourself in the ass someday.
4778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why the downfall of Silkroad will be the partnership of bitcoin and the US gov on: October 07, 2013, 02:26:06 PM
IMO

Gov. Regulation of BTC + No SR = Death of BTC

Really if the gov. starts fiddling around with BTC why not just go back to USD, wtf would be the difference at all?

4779  Other / Off-topic / Re: intel vPro processor backdoor to make securing bitcoin impossable? on: October 01, 2013, 01:15:37 AM
so my question is this, if we take everything that is written in this article for granted, would it even be technically possible to secure ones bitcoins on a computer with one of these vPro processors?

Relying on any single piece of hardware to secure your bitcoins is a bad idea. In the future, you should use two pieces of hardware created in two different parts of the world by two different organizations in two different legal jurisdictions to secure your bitcoins.

Right now... "only invest time or money you can afford to lose."

thanks for chiming in Gavin. that sounds like very good advise to me.

also you must be able to afford to lose a lot of time seeing as how much you have invested in this project so far Grin

Gavin gets paid for working full time on Bitcoin, I would guess he's being compensated well enough that his finances haven't become totally uncomfortable (although I suspect he's also not being paid well enough either, but I won't speculate further as it's tantamount to expecting some kind of clarification).

i know i was just messing around.
