No doubt, if we waited 50 years more, we could go for much less money and lesser risks, but why give the glory to our sons and grandsons?

Since our fathers and grandfathers left this opportunity, let's take it ourselves.

Well said.

The reason is the large number of materials and processes which must be tested, and then implemented, and then made safe and reliable on Mars, before people could possibly actually lived there.
4763  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Electric Cars - The future ? on: July 30, 2018, 11:47:45 PM
...

Do you own an electric car or are considering buying one  ? What are your reasons for buying it ?

I took a mountain bike and added an electric power to it. It works very well, has about 40 km range and will go 35 kph (faster than would be wise)

It is certainly practical for in town trips like going to work, weather and traffic permitting.

It was also not that expensive, something like $800 US for 1000 watt motor and 14Ah battery (If I recall correctly). There are many cheaper ones such as 250 watt motor but these are considered "pedal assist." Also in many places law limits bikes to 250 watts, to go higher you need a different registration.

Very interesting project. It led me to be less enthusiastic about the cars, though. It takes quite a bit of expensive batteries to move people around!

1000W motor and only 35 kph? It should go much faster than that. It has to be something with your controller saving up the battery and not giving enough juice to the motor. It should go at least 10 km faster if you modify the controller. if you're able to go40km that's probably the reason why it's not that fast because most of those powerful bikes that go over 50 are meant for 30km range at full power.
You are correct. I'm not personally interested in how fast an electric bike can go, though. Those higher speeds I would want the larger tires and stability of a motorcycle.

It was probably 35 mph not kph that I measured as top speed, because I view normal cruise speeds as 10-20 mph (and 20mph is pretty much 35 kph...).
4764  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bible downloads banned in China on: July 30, 2018, 09:37:49 PM
With all the news coming out of China, like Xi being able to rule without term limits, this is one that didn't surprised me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqeg8vLlx7c

Do you agree with this? Should the state regulate religion as strictly as China does? For example, they screen people before allowing them to go an the haj to Mecca.

I believe that with today's Internet it is impossible to stop the flow of ideas.

Hence it should be impossible to stop the transfer of text versions of books, including the Bible.

Therefore this thread is nonsense.

What a great option! I guess it must make the bicycle a lot heavier. Is it still practical to use it as a regular bicycle with using the motor? It's definitely a lot cheaper than buying a car, but I guess there are some mopeds you could get for that price. I'm sure they wouldn't be electric though, so it wouldn't satisfy that curiosity.

The bike weight is increased by 20 lb, and since it is a 15 speed mountain bike, there is no problem with pedaling and not using the motor. I simply replaced the front wheel with one that had an electric motor built in. The pedals and gear train the the rear wheel are not affected.

If you wanted just 20 km range instead of 40 km range, you could half the size and cost and weight of the battery pack.

Smart people should always double check the veracity of old internet memes made by kids. Or don't.

Now come on.

Everyone knows, that guy Trump is just a clown.

Nothing but a clown.

I could go on and on...

From this you can see quite readily that dogs are cats, an monkeys are birds.

Logic on this one checks out solid

Internet picture proves it.

It's so unfair, that we are trapped in a small point of light. Below is the Land that we Should Have, the Flat Land of Mars.

The idea of a hard vacuum next to a pressurized atmosphere without a barrier is ludicrous, what scientific proof do you have for outer space?

Indeed this is an erudite and profoundly stifling intellectual conflagration.

I submit the following reply for your consideration.

You are familiar with the Light Switch of course. These are everywhere, in most rooms. They are thought to turn light on and off. But in reality, what they do is quite different. They turn dark on and off.

Quite similarly, pressure switches are a complete falsehood. They are really vacuum switches.

From this you can see quite readily that dogs are cats, an monkeys are birds.
4770  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Humans keep increasing what will happen? on: July 29, 2018, 11:08:14 PM
Despite the use of various contraceptives, the world population keeps ballooning. Will there come a time that all food will be extinct and we cannot feed ourselves or what is the way forward because we are tilling all the virgin lands etc .

Overpopulation will surely have it's toll on the natural resources on our planet.
Pollution and depletion of the natural resources will surely make things harder
for the generations to come. If we don't find alternative solutions to the growing
number of problems, human civilization is at risk. There's always a price to pay.

These ideas were proposed by Paul Erich in the 1970s, virtually identically. None of the dire consequences he predicted have came true, and the world, and the welfare of people, is far, far superior to the 1970s. In spite of great increases in population.

Well, Duh....

There's the stupid party, and the evil party....

Stupid people cannot really be 'evil' in my humble opinion.  Evil is the domain of the highly intelligent.

As for political parties in the U.S., it's a joke.  There is one party.  Might as well call it the Evil Party as far as I can tell.  They play the two fake parties like a finger-puppet show.  The two parties respectively pick up both 'stupid' and 'evil' followers.  The ratios may differ slightly, but not a lot as far as I can tell.

Now that would be true in most any country, but it remains a standard joke, the Stupid and Evil party...

However to argue the point, Trump certainly has a facade of looking and talking Stupid, and I have never seen a better act of Evil than Hitlery.
4772  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SpaceX and the prospects of Mars colonization. on: July 29, 2018, 10:58:58 PM
Let's take the facts as they are. We couldn't go to Mars TODAY if we wanted. NOT with the guarantee that everything goes 100% as expected unless you are expecting to fail. But just as many years ago they started to make boats from cutting trees in half and then making room for 1 or 2 people to cruise ships and yachts today, this is the journey that we have to take to make things possible. Little steps, including big and small mistakes to achieve the goal.

In a way becoming a multi-planetary species is necessary due to that our solar system is moving slow and pretty much will be eaten up in millions of years. Going to Mars is step 1 of many many many to prevent the loss of our species.

Good insight, but the part bolded is unnecessary.

All those concepts of safety and 100% are maybe for public consumption, but things moving at huge rates of speed, going through pure vacuums, and entering planetary atmospheres hoping to slow down and land....

Those are dangerous things to do.

The death rate from the Shuttle flights was what, 2%?
4773  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Humans Raping the Planet on: July 29, 2018, 08:26:22 PM
What can you say about this picture? Can you Imagine this beautiful creature was slaughtered for a Bone (Ivory) Which Asians grind up to make a so called Aphrodisiac to make their tiny peckers hard?

This is what the Human Race does. We are Raping the planet......

Interesting tear jerker of a picture.

I've highlighted your conclusion that does not in any fashion follow from the facts presented.
4774  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SpaceX and the prospects of Mars colonization. on: July 29, 2018, 01:57:57 PM
Show me scientific proof outer space is real, you're being sold a lie by SpaceX! Ask a scientist how much Mars weighs and they'll tell about how they use the gravitational constant "G" to calculate its weight. "G" is derived from an experiment that observed two heavy balls through a small hole in a 17th century shed.

They weigh Mars with heavy balls in a shed, this is their scientific proof that Mars is a giant heavy ball in the sky. You want to call me fucking mad for believing Mars is just a small light? This space shit is a total fucking scam.

But it was a pretty big shed.
4775  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are some people still skeptical about climate change? on: July 29, 2018, 01:53:42 PM
I'll say it again - if you have any actual facts/figures/evidence/data/proof to present for your side, then I'll happily discuss it.

-Baseless opinions and no facts-

I'll take that as a "no" then.

Until you post a single piece of evidence, I'm done wasting my time constantly refuting your made up drivel.

Now you are falsely attributing comments to me, which is obviously against the forum rules. "Baseless opinions and no facts" is what YOU SAID, not I.

Why would deceit further your cause?

It is the problem, not the solution.

After all, a proud dispenser of FACTS must be truthful, or he has no facts.

-snip-

Glad to see you've finally changed your mind, since the source you just used for your argument also says this:

Quote
Due to greenhouse gas emissions the Earth has already warmed as much in about the past 200 years as it ordinarily might in several thousand years, Clark said.

"One of the biggest concerns right now is how the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets will respond to global warming and contribute to sea level rise," Clark said

.....

You don't have "a case", except in your own delusional thinking, in which you are the Factboy, possessor of all correct facts, and others are either wrong or praise your keen insight.

This is another tired attempt to reframe an argument and misdirect. (e.g.. I'll say it again - if you have any actual facts/figures/evidence/data/proof to present for your side,...)

FROM: "All the ice will melt" and "An ice age is coming"

TO: the boring, trivial mantra of "Man's CO2 emissions will cause the planet to burn up!"

But I have news for you. Clark's comment about GGE is not inconsistent with his paper's thesis, methods or conclusions. It's not the subject of his investigation.

It's irrelevant to it, and you are just trying to shift the goal posts of the discussion.

..... the increase in unprecedented storm activity is being linked as an early indicator that things are changing.
What unprecedented storm activity? Climate is defined as weather over a minimum of three successive ten year periods. If you have seen some stormy weather that has pretty much zero relevance to climate averages.

4778  Other / Politics & Society / Re: $50,000 electric car or $45 carbon filter on: July 29, 2018, 12:45:37 AM
I am very skeptical about the real effect of the filter on cars emissions, I mean, this carbon dioxyde can be filtered and kept somewhere but it cannot be destroyed so simply just with a $45 filter or we would have no more global warming problem if it was that simple, it seems like a scam to me but maybe it help a little bit. Anyone knows how it could really work ?

carbon dioxide in filters will be like ash from wood fire. Ash is good fertilizer for plants and trees.

The product as described cannot work.

Any other questions?

https://www.ted.com/talks/gwynne_shotwell_spacex_s_plan_to_fly_you_across_the_globe_in_30_minutes

Gwynne Shotwell, president of SpaceX, in her recent TED talk, presented a more acceptable time frame to have the first humans on Mars, within 10 years.

But she has even bigger ambitious than Musk:

"this is the first step in us moving to other solar systems and potentially other galaxies, and I think this is the only time I ever out-vision Elon, because I want to meet other people in other solar systems."

Better start investing on anti-ageing medications or she won't see this on her lifetime.

10 Years?

Apollo put men on the Moon 7 years after it started, right?

That was a space program that basically, the entire American economy was dedicated to.

You just don't have that sort of spirit about going to Mars. And you don't get the required funding without it.

4780  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are some people still skeptical about climate change? on: July 29, 2018, 12:36:35 AM
I have to admit I'm still on the fence of climate change. I don't think the tiny amount of pollution by humans really has an everlasting effect on our atmosphere.

If you have the opportunity to talk with real scientists and researchers in related subjects,  you will find a far different viewpoint than that of internet  opinionators.

The primary domain of anti-scientific and anti-logical attitudes and mindsets reaching the public today is "climate change."
