4801  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6990's and risers - actual experiences? on: February 27, 2012, 05:19:19 AM
The main thing that I have found is that the risers themselves tend to be rather fragile. While they are flexible and will bend, it is best to avoid much bending or twisting at all.

While I do not use 6990s, I believe that it is actually correct that 5870s (which I use) pull more power from the PCIe slot itself than 6990s do. Reason being that the 6990s have 8 pin power connectors and use them to the fullest advantage.

really?  Angry
Calm down, I doubt he can do manual verification in his sleep.

Is there any reason to not use the JRE 7u3 with Diablominer?  Seems to be working fine, though I've only been testing it for a few minutes.  Performance isn't noticeably different.

As long as Oracle didn't botch the release, I don't see why not. Every new major revision of the JVM should execute older bytecode fine, they have entire testing suites for this.
Yes, and besides that the main part of the miner is the kernel, which has nothing to do with java as such.
4804  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: High Density Milk Crate Rig - 6 GHash on: February 27, 2012, 05:10:23 AM
uhhh, bad air circulation for the PSUs.
The fans are completely exposed on the bottom of the crate. Works well except for the fact that I cant set the crate on a solid surface, so I just put  it on top of another crate.
and where the hot air go?

Up up and awaaaaaayyyyyyy!

of course as soon as you give me the admin access on gpumax you have been promising me so I can direct these babies anywhere I want,

I think I need about 100ghash to crack these pesky passwd files from cia.gov

=)

rofl, assuming those passwd files use sha256(sha256()) then sure you will be all good Grin

Your emotionless constant posts are annoying, the meds dissagree with you child...

Teflone, if I bribed you 1 BTC, would you consider removing the above sentence from your post?

Blasphemy!

Now time to take my meds, was it 2 pills before lunch with food, or 4 pills after lunch, with booze ? The value of these pills is metaphysical..
Just as long as it isn't Valium + Xanax + Alcohol, since that's what killed Whitney Houston.
4807  Other / Off-topic / Re: Business idea (Off-Topic, but looking for feedback) on: February 27, 2012, 05:01:21 AM
Very, very ambitions project. I doubt it would succeed, even if a big corporation tried it.

- Is this actually a problem? How much money can a Wall-Mart store save by using your system instead of their current system?
- Getting approval for this from governments will be a nightmare, especially with automated vehicles. Every town you have to go through will object to your rails.
- Why hasn't anyone done this already if it's so good?
- Your scheme is more like traditional rail than road transport. But traditional rail traffic has been declining (AFAIK). If businesses decreasingly value traditional rail's improved economy and speed, your system may not appeal to them.
Not only that, but the corporation(s) that implement such a thing would be paying to develop the networks themselves, instead of the governments building superhighway systems for them - since such a thing is so specialized, and wouldn't be useable for everyone.

I would like to see more Maglev based rail transport in the US though.

I am slightly confused tho,  Fedex tracking info but the box showed Priority Mail from USPS.  Which was it?
Fedex doesn't give a shit what kind of boxes you use.

A little off topic, but now I don't get to see you (rjk) eat his GPU rigs

Damn good thing, they were expensive! (See the sig Tongue)
4809  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Power related questions on: February 27, 2012, 03:04:46 AM
Be sure to consider the fact that the PCIe slots also consume power that is pulled via the mobo itself. The spec allows up to 75 watts per slot, but most cards pull between 20 and 60 watts each.
4810  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Single in the wild (BOUNTY RECEIVED!!!) on: February 27, 2012, 01:52:05 AM
I have not been following this all that closely but is there more than jut one of these in the wild? (not counting Inaba's)

I think the only ones reported are giga and Inaba.
Reportedly Luke-jr has his in hand as well.
4811  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is Butter Fly Labs using ASIC's????? on: February 27, 2012, 01:20:46 AM
The downside is its a lot of work and somewhat of a gamble but I'm not one to say no to a profit either so I can't blame them for doing what they are doing. Its just one day they are gonna run out of fpgas and then they are gonna have to start over with a new process which may or may not be nearly as cost effective as what they are doing now.
Well seeing as they were able to design a completely new board layout in like month (since power issues cropped up), I would say that that is not likely to be a limitation.
4812  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is Butter Fly Labs using ASIC's????? on: February 27, 2012, 01:08:44 AM
Are they really making that much of a profit from it? They are selling two chips per board, not to mention the rest of the cost of research and development and making the unit. I'd be surprised if they make 100$ profit from each one and their supply of fpgas can't be that great? I mean if they have 10k fpgas thats "only" 50k profit.
Ask them...

Some VC's might not need to see a wildly massive profit from a company's trial run before they will commit to lots more cash. (that was speculation btw)
4813  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why I am not afraid of sharing bad ideas. on: February 27, 2012, 01:03:31 AM
I think most people don't have any problem with sharing bad ideas -- the real question is, do you care about humanity enough to share the good ones?

Oooo deep.

4814  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Best Tri-Card Motherboard? on: February 26, 2012, 10:54:37 PM
ASRock 970 Extreme4 + Sempron 145.

For an ATX board, I thought I ruled that one out because the bottom slot would have a 5970 block all the headers?  Doesn't look like it'd fit.  The price is pretty good though Wink
You are spending money on a case?  Shocked

why not use a cheap-o motheboard with pci extenders?
+1
I have 6 cards on the above ASRock mobo, btw.

After 120 confirmations.
4817  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin BIP 16 /P2SH/ is bad, your action is needed! on: February 26, 2012, 09:31:14 PM
The problem is still behavioral and has already been solved with encrypted wallets.

If we make changes to the Bitcoin protocol to ameliorate every possible human error we will end up with an unusable system.
Sam
Do you know what a keylogger is? It is something that renders an encrypted wallet essentially useless. Requiring more than one diverse device to confirm a transaction is another solution to this issue.

The bitcoin developers certainly have NOT been adding features willy-nilly left right and center. To say otherwise is simply delusional.
4818  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [3600 Gh/s] DeepBit.net PPS+Prop,instant payouts, we pay for INVALID BLOCKS too on: February 26, 2012, 09:08:37 PM
Your argument boils down to: Bitcoin is secure enough.

Mine boils down to: let's have some options to make it even more secure.

I don't know if BIP16 is the right answer, but I sure wish I had accessible multi-sig functionality in the official client.

My argument is not "Bitcoin is secure enough".  I don't know that it is.

But the onus is on you guys to prove that "multi-sig" is necessary not on me to prove that it isn't.  The arguments for doing so can only be described as behavioral.  Making changes to overcome an individuals behavior is a no win situation.
Sam
Some might say that malware developers are afraid of the change, and are attempting to delay it as long as possible by spreading FUD, and causing delays. Who are we to believe then?
4819  Economy / Services / Re: GPUMAX | The Bitcoin Mining Marketplace on: February 26, 2012, 08:28:18 PM
I want to get paid more for mining because I need a new heel for my shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

I just had to do it in the Texas tone...  Enjoy

EDIT:  I messed up the quarter part... oh well.
