I got out of BTC ages ago in 2013, but still have a couple Casascius coins left. My plan is to dump the first one at $100,000, and the second one at $1,000,000, and then my Coinbase balance at $10,000,000. A man can dream, right? I never thought the price would go over $25, and yet here we are.

I've got one too, but why do you want it? I assume me wiping the tokens off of it won't be an issue for whatever you are doing?

Also, another question in relation to this being a physical item: Can I pass off the value of the BTC1 on each coin for capital gains and then count the remainder of the coin's profit as non taxed hobby income? It seems that the value of the BTC itself is the main issue here, and if there were no BTC involved it would be a much simpler person-to-person transaction of occasional nature that would not normally be taxed.
Example: I bought the coins loaded with BTC1 each back in 2012. The value of BTC1 at that point was about $3.50. Now, if I sell the coin for any amount higher than the market value of ~$3k, could I count the amount over ~$3k as non-taxed hobby income since this isn't any sort of regular business? That would separate out the value of the BTC from the value of the coin itself.

Thanks for the info. Since it's a physical item, this makes me wonder if such a tax applies to the random shit that I occasionally sell on craiglist/ebay, or are these coins being treated specially "because bitcoin"?

I bought Casascius coins in 2012 and have held them since then. If I sell them for USD, what are the tax implications?

I sent it off and will hope for the best. Since their population report shows that they have graded 365 of these coins, I'll consider that proof enough that there should be no issue, I just have to trust that the post office doesn't fuck up.
EDIT: When they first started grading them, they were worth about $10 USD and they probably never figured out that the price went up since then. Also when I emailed them, they said it was only to cover the value of the metal, but even then $100 is kind of high for a brass token.

ANACS will use what you put in for Variety to match their catalog of coin titles. Notice how most slabbed coins have a consistent "2011 TOKEN CASASCIUS 1 BITCOIN BRASS (firstbits)" or some such title
No need to pay variety attribution verification fee.
Max value is 100usd per coin on crypto. They will insure for a max of 100usd back to you. They generally ship Fedex.
Natural tarnish or toning is not necessarily a negative. Artificial tarnish (fingerprints, oils, waterspots, etc) is negative. Cleaning or polishing is also bad.
The big two (PCGS and NGC) do not do crypto coins/tokens. There is a UK outfit (CGS?) that does grade these coins I believe.
How's the holo side of your coin look?
Thanks for the info. The holo side super nice, the plastic part is totally unblemished although the remaining brass area is similar to the front, i.e. slightly spotty or dull. When I got these things, I paid like BTC3.47 for both with shipping from Mike, in June of 2012. At that time, the MtGox BTC-USD daily closing price was around $6.50 so I kind of tossed them around and left them in a drawer for a while with no special attention.

Guys, I want to submit a couple of 2011 Casascius coins to ANACS for grading, but filling out their form is proving to be a challenge. If I understand this correctly, they will use whatever I write in the "Variety" field without modification as the title on the coin case? If so, what is the correct thing to write there? Should I use the "variety attribution verification and errors" service to make sure that is done correctly, or is it not necessary?
It also says max value $100 - does that mean I am not allowed to put in a value that exceeds $100 in the "Owners Value" field? How is return shipping insured? I don't have a FedEx/UPS account.
These rounds are loaded, but have visible discoloration from the brass tarnishing. Will they still be grade-able or should I not even send them in because of that? Any suggestions are welcome. This is the first time I've tried doing such a thing as grading coins - total n00b here. Are there any other services that will grade bitcoins? Preferably any with a nice online webform and submission process?

This sort of shit pisses me off big time. I run AdBlockPlus so I never saw it, but when I disabled ABP in order to see what an unprotected user might see, I saw the same ads and they weren't even in a highlighted yellow box. Fuck you, Google. I submitted reports for both ads that I saw, by using this contact form: https://support.google.com/adwords/contact/feedback

Hey if you wanna have a go, I've got all the parts except the video cards... Just name your price.

rjk, do you still have the entire pwm fan controller setup that I built for this project years ago? I remember taking a lot of pride in that, being my first bitcoin-related project Good luck selling, I hope someone will be eager to take on the challenge for sCrypt mining! Yep I do, and that cool micro-router based wifi sharing thingy.

I'm bumping this to hopefully reel in some offers for this stuff, because I need to get rid of it. I have tons of parts that need to go. Here's a list:
The backplane itself, mounted on the custom tray/frame, and hard wired to a 1.2 KW PC Power and Cooling PSU. Because of the way this is mounted, I don't want to take it apart and I wish to sell it as a package. $750
The Sandy Bridge based CPU board with 8 GB of ECC DDR3 RAM as well as the older NLT6313 dual CPU board with 8 GB of DDR2. $1000 Or, the backplane and CPU boards for $1500 together.
All the other accessories - buy the entire package for $2000 including the backplane and CPU boards.
These accessories include:
Delta fans IBM 240 volt PDU with 70 amp connector Dell 2360 watt 12 volt power supplies for blade servers 6 AWG cable with Dell PSU connectors soldered on Additional frame parts Custom built 240 volt PDU with power cables (for connecting regular rigs)
SHIPPING IS EXTRA! If you buy everything, it will probably take up 3 or 4 very large boxes (50+ lbs). For this reason, I will not ship internationally. I'm located in Ohio if anyone wants to pick some stuff up.
Payment: I will not take only bitcoins, but I will consider a partial bitcoin trade with cash. Since PayPal sucks, I will only consider using it with the most trusted members. I will also consider partial trades of BFL ASIC hardware.

Thanks for supporting my point with the case of your brain.
Would you care to support your point with the uptime statistics of your non-linux servers supporting your customers? Oh right - Microsoft can't be arsed to create a server OS whose updates don't require a reboot. Note: I am intentionally ignoring BSD, Solaris, etc since he likely has never heard of them.I feel your pain, I also administer a couple Windows servers that have to be rebooted monthly for patches, but they are in a lesser capacity that can stand some downtime. The Linux kernel is nothing short of a work of art, in my own personal opinion. If our site has downtime, it is solely the fault of ourselves (for deploying code with bugs) or our hardware (for failing catastrophically). The Kernel can even survive a total failure of certain hardware parts such as processor and RAM, when in a hardware mirrored configuration. As far as I know, Windows doing so without at least a BSOD to show for it is unheard of. And furthermore, even Microsoft knows the superiority of Linux and its associated components in a high-availability server environment - they use it themselves! It's a very poor practice to completely absolve oneself of one OS or another, or programming language, or anything else - each has its strengths and weaknesses. Now I will stop feeding the troll, since I have had my say. Can anyone say "forum sliding tactics"?

I am 12 and what is this?
I've seen these posters before - they exist to do nothing but build up a high post count and then scam someone. That's all I'm going to say on this. In other news, this is now an uptime thread! Consider the following: [root@mail1 ~]# uptime 17:04:40 up 974 days, 5:51, 1 user, load average: 0.06, 0.03, 0.00
[root@web2 rjk]# uptime 17:15:12 up 556 days, 48 min, 1 user, load average: 1.56, 1.23, 1.23
[root@web4 rjk]# uptime 17:15:56 up 466 days, 1:19, 1 user, load average: 1.11, 1.05, 1.06
[root@db1 rjk]# uptime 17:16:42 up 313 days, 17:09, 1 user, load average: 0.25, 0.36, 0.35

Well hey, whaddya know, I just got a shipment confirmation today for my 2x Jalapeno, order 1776. Now I have to contact the guy that bought them, who looks like he hasn't been on the forum since 2012. What fun.
You bought through a middleman? Why? But if your order was confirmed, that means it has been shipped right? No, I was the middleman, and everything is all good. Received and re-shipped to buyer, who has them running in another thread.
