4901  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is classic dead at last? on: March 23, 2016, 04:41:57 PM
I think the Classic code doesn't get withdrawn for another year, and we have a long ways to go.

My guess is that it depends very much on what happens to the price around the halvening. At the moment people are holding, waiting for the halvening. If there is a sell-off after that, then some miners will switch to classic out of panic.

i really don't see how price can affect the decision of miners to switch to classic?

can you explain what is you reasoning for such speculation

The last time there was a big price drop (following Mike Hearn's blogpost), the miners hurriedly put out a statement that they would consider Classic.

If they think Classic will lead to price rises, they'll switch.
4902  Economy / Speculation / Re: How can we make bitcoin's price only RISE and never FALL? on: March 23, 2016, 04:15:30 PM
As long as people need to do things like pay rent, pay mortgages and pay taxes, in fiat, there will be sellers of bitcoin.

That's the way it is. Work on getting your local govt to accept bitcoin payments for taxes if you want to prevent sellers.
4903  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / German Tech Magazine t3n Trials Employee Bitcoin Payroll on: March 23, 2016, 03:47:53 PM

German tech magazine t3n has announced it will now allow employees to receive a portion of their salary in bitcoin.

The news is the result of a partnership between t3n and local bitcoin startup PEY, which is now developing a payment solution for bitcoin merchants with US-based startup BitPay.

t3n said it has been conducting a trial of the payroll service since November, with employees receiving €20 worth of bitcoin with each paycheck. From here, however, workers will be able to adjust this payment, depending on their risk tolerance.
4904  Economy / Exchanges / Re: cryptsy ZET coins withdraw scam on: March 23, 2016, 03:34:50 PM
I've got some doge stuck there. No-one knows what is going on there. During Feb they started to open some wallets, but haven't done any more since March 2nd.

did you withdraw any of those coins yourself?
i have mostly BTC which i can't withdraw and a couple of altcoins in small amounts which i could never withdraw also.
and the blog post about the wallets that were opened (the list) is empty, it is this way from Feb and before.

Most of the wallets arn't open, so unable to withdraw.

I'd remind people to log into their Cryptsy account once a month regardless - it would be dreadful if they finally opened the wallets but you couldn't withdraw because your account was locked as you'd fallen foul of their "didn't log in for six months, account forfeited" rule.

To eliminate the financial security issues a lot of African e-commerce users have suffered from, Bidorbuy, Africa’s largest online market, began accepting Bitcoin payments March 3. The integration of Bitcoin relieves e-commerce platforms from storing sensitive financial data on their local servers, reducing the risk of a data breach and leak of personal user information. By providing Bitcoin as one of its main payment methods, Bidorbuy aims to lead the growth of the e-commerce industry in Kenya and South Africa.

Bidorbuy has more than 700,000 items listed on its online marketplace and generates more than 30 million page views per month. It is the largest corporation in the South African and Kenyan e-commerce industry by market share and the size of userbase
.

From the standpoint of a merchant, I'm not sure why more haven't adopted bitcoin. The cost savings alone that use it over cards should be enough to convince people to start accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment. For those that sell a good or service that haven't looked into accepting bitcoin, don't take my word for it, look into the benefits for yourself and I think you will come to the same conclusion I did.

In Europe, the problem is the banks. In order for a merchant to accept bitcoin, they also need to have a bank that doesn't close their account because they're accepting bitcoin (the merchant needs a traditional bank onside because of the need to convert to fiat to pay taxes, rent etc).

The only European bank that is bitcoin friendly is Fidor bank, but it's still too new to have gained market share.

The African banks seem to be taking a different path - they're interested in bitcoin because it cuts down on fraud. I expect Bidorbuy talked to their bank before introducing this and got the go-ahead when they demonstrated how much credit-card fraud they could cut.

They're using BTC as an effort to ward off credit-card fraud. If they succeed, a lot of other sites will follow.

4909  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: As Satoshi Nakamoto Predicted, Dynamic Fees For Transactions Take Root on: March 23, 2016, 01:51:09 PM
Fee increases are just a form of rationing by price. With full blocks it just means a lucky few get included, and everyone else should take a hike, or go use an alt!
4910  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Enormous ways to earning Bitcoin on: March 23, 2016, 01:47:51 PM
You've forgotten to list the most important method: doing a job that is paid in bitcoin. See

https://www.reddit.com/r/Jobs4bitcoins

You'll earn more in one day than a whole year of the other methods.
4911  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DDoS'er admits to being paid to attack classic nodes... on: March 22, 2016, 07:28:08 PM
what a numpty, bitcoin will continue on and this moron will eventually give up.  it will be  a waste of money in the long run

For home user it might be probem because the internet will be down at the time of the attack. For VPS it is not big deal to be down ocasionally if you just run full node to support network.

The attack cost money + possibility of getting caught, so not worth it especialy when they can get down only about 10% of classic nodes.

Regarding the cost - I wonder who is paying for this and how much they've spent so far.
4912  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New Thoughts and Ideas on: March 22, 2016, 07:03:06 PM
An example from a few years back might be the Bitcoin debit card that has come out over the past year or so. That is a great idea for a service that is making it around.

This is not a service idea, but just a marketing one: I'd really like it if the bitcoin debit card people issued statistics on how many people were using it and what the total amounts are.

Very often people won't adopt something unless they know other people are doing it. At the moment we've got all these services but no idea if anyone is actually using them.

Speaking of criminals using BTC, there's also this bit of news:

http://www.pymnts.com/news/security-and-risk/2016/city-held-hostage-via-bitcoin-ransomware/

Quote
the case is a bit more serious as it has to do with hackers using bitcoin ransomware to lock out local government employees from their own computers.

As has been reported, city officials worked to get back up an running, but there were at least a few computers that had already been impacted by the ransomware. The result? Having those government computers hacked in return for roughly $730 in bitcoin. But unlike some cases (like the hospital that forked over the bitcoin before consulting law enforcement), in this instance, the city called upon law enforcement for help — scaring off the hackers.

The nuts and bolts of the the hospital story began last month in Los Angeles with $17,000 worth of bitcoin being paid out to hackers who took down a computer system — which, of course, included vital medical records. This is the type of malware that’s been most commonly showing up in headlines and has been on the rise across the U.S.

Really, the sooner they start using an anonymous alt for this kind of stuff, the better it will be for bitcoiners...
4915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Remains Most Popular Digital Currency on Dark Web on: March 22, 2016, 05:53:39 PM
It's interesting to see how there are other alternatives right now that have better technology for anonymity, but still Bitcoin is the #1 used coin. This speaks of how important network effect is and how hard other coins will have it to even pretend to take Bitcoins #1 spot.
And we soon will have tech that makes Bitcoin as anonymous as the "anonymous coins."
because of bitcoin's anonymity, it's really good to use on dark web. I'm not surprised to know this, but I have some concerns about the legality and price of bitcoin. well, will this issue make bitcoin be banned or kind of thing?

It's all down to percentages.

Others have pointed out that off-line criminals like to use fiat cash. But fiat is not banned - because a good 90% or more of it's use is legit, so no sense banning it just to catch the minority that is using it for criminal purposes.

As long as the majority of bitcoin usage is for legal stuff, it won't get banned. It's only when it is used mainly for illegal stuff that it is in danger.

The long and short of it is, if you want to save BTC, use it for normal commerce as much as possible to get the legal use percentage up.
4916  Economy / Speculation / Re: Getting closer to Halving but .. no increase ? on: March 22, 2016, 04:12:03 PM
My bet is on a price drop, a big drop.

why you think this? Like a lot of miners decide to stop investing and chain could "stop" (or produce really slow new blocks?)

It's the old "Buy on the anticipation, sell on the news". BTC's price is in the hands of the speculators, not the miners.

You might want to try Hyperstake as well - staking after 8 days, and the price holds up surprisingly well.

Oooh 8 days - not as long as some but patience isn't one of my strong points! What is the stake reward %

Here's the hyperstake thread

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=678849.0

Stake reward is quite high if you get the coin management right - there's lots of discussion about this in the thread
4919  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Japan Considers Regulating Bitcoin as Currency on: March 22, 2016, 02:32:46 PM
A country will never use BTC only currency unless its real money would inflate down to - 10000% ..

Venezuela is getting close - inflation there of 720% (I kid you not).

But they are reacting with force against those who use BTC (miners being arrested etc).

I think the problem with the other coins is that they are too volatile. No-one wants to receive payment in a coin that might lose 20% of it's value the next day.

BTC at the moment is moving by about 1% a day at most - that makes it attractive if you are trying to do commerce with it.
