4921  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 11:35:20 PM
Yes, you can install the Waves coin app to your device... but you cannot use Waves from within Ledger Live. It does not show in the list of currencies available when you got to add an account.

The only way to interact with Waves using the Ledger Live is via the Waves Web or Desktop Client.

Okay this is strange.  Is there a reason why i can't go back to that page where it shows the manager and all the coins i could install like waves and every other coin?
Click "Manager" within Ledger Live to find the coin apps.

Quote
Because when i click on accounts and the plus sign, there is only a small number of coins i could add from there.  Like i don't see an option to add powerledger for example.  I cannot find this page anymore.
Exactly... you CANNOT add an "Account" for Waves (and lots of the other altcoins) directly within Ledger Live. They need to use their own interfaces... Waves needs the Waves Web or Desktop Client.

Also, seriously, learn how to use the "Edit" button Roll Eyes
4922  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 11:23:44 PM
You are massively overcomplicating a VERY simple process...

1. Install whatever coin apps you want on the device using "Manager" within Ledger Live
2. Create "Accounts" for the coins you want to view within Ledger Live

NOTE: You CANNOT add Waves to Ledger Live at this time, you need to connect your device to the waves webclient as per the instructions: https://docs.wavesplatform.com/en/waves-client/account-management/ledger-nano.html

It is like using MyEtherWallet... make sure Ledger Live is NOT running when you try to connect to the waves web client, as it might interfere with browser->device connection.
4923  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 11:16:53 PM
So when i add bitcoin to it, do i need to do both things here?  Thus click on install bitcoin.  And then Click on that plus next to the add accounts to add accounts to this portfolio?  Im confused why there are like 2 options here?
You have to add "accounts" within Ledger Live, so that Ledger Live knows what coins you "have", or at least, are interested in viewing in Ledger Live.

NOTE: If you don't have the coin app installed on the device, you won't be able to add an account for it.

You have to add the coin app on the device itself, so that the device can communicate the correct info to/from Ledger Live. Remember, the device really just holds a "seed"... ALL the coins use the same seed. The coin app on the device, is responsible for converting from the seed to the coin specific addresses etc.

4924  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 10:49:39 PM
Firstly... STOP multi posting... just edit the post and add to it. There is no need to make 4 posts in a row. Roll Eyes

Generally, that "download" logo and update indicates that it is trying to transfer the new firmware to the ledger device. However it is has been stuck like that for a while, then it might mean that something has not quite gone right.

Personally, I would disconnect the Ledger Device. Shut down Ledger Live and start from the beginning.

- Open Ledger Live
- Enter password
- Connect your device when prompted
- Unlock it
- Start the Firmware update again.

For reference, this video shows the process using Ledger Live: https://youtu.be/aewV2HmppzM?t=47

He seemed to have some issues with the "identifier" not being displayed on his device. Not sure if this has since been fixed.
4925  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Looking for a working wallet on an older android on: December 25, 2018, 10:32:06 PM
Even if my phone will only serve as a wallet without installing any other applications? Thanks for your advice.
If that is the case... then I would advise that you install LineageOS: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/i9100/install

LineageOS 14.1 is essentially a customised version of Android 7.1.2 (Nougat). So, you'll be able to run almost any of the Android Wallets. Personally, I would suggest either Electrum or Mycelium, but it'll come down to your personal preference.

The OS itself is fairly robust and well tested... there are a LOT of diehard S2 fans... I used to be the S2 device mantainer for a custom ROM (SlimROM). The hardware itself should be capable of running the OS and the wallet app without too much trouble.

Looking at the recent changes, they're attempting to keep it somewhat up-to-date security wise with the 20181205 security patches.
4926  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How to transfer altcoins to Nano Ledger S Wallet? on: December 25, 2018, 10:24:52 PM
I actually have my waves in the old waves lite client.  Do you know if i need to transfer it first to the new waves desktop client first before i transfer it to nano ledger s?
I don't know enough about waves to say for sure. But my guess would be no.

All you are really doing is sending waves from one waves address to another. There should be no reason that you can't send it directly from their lite client to some other waves address... but this is just a guess.
4927  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 10:20:55 PM
Just follow the instructions in the Ledger Live app after you have downloaded and installed it... it has very simple and easy to follow instructions. To setup the app properly (so it can see you accounts), you will need your Nano S device... and you will need to unlock it when prompted.

NOTE: It will probably make you do a firmware update first, if you're not already updated.
4928  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Sending Fee Question on: December 25, 2018, 10:16:47 PM
As always... check one of the many websites that shows the mempool size and current fees being used...

Personally, I use the following:
- https://btc.com/stats/unconfirmed-tx

You can easily get an idea of the current size of the mempool... and the current fees being used.

Right at this moment, the mempool is relatively small, so almost any fee greater than 1 sat/byte will lead to relatively quick confirmation...
4929  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How to transfer altcoins to Nano Ledger S Wallet? on: December 25, 2018, 10:10:06 PM
Is it pretty simple to setup the waves wallet on nano ledger s and have the waves sent to it?
Waves requires that you use the Waves Web Client. This is not developed by Ledger... it's much like using your Ledger Nano S with MyEtherWallet etc.

Quote
Also when you do this, always do a tiny amount transfer first from waves wallet to nano ledger s just in case right?
That's up to you... I wouldn't see any reason to if you have been successfully using the Nano S with other currencies and the one you're trying to use has only been supported for like 1 day... but that's just me. Tongue

Quote
Also i recalled you could only have a few coins in the nano ledger s max.  Like if you go over a certain amount, you have to delete that wallet.  Is this still true?  So if someone wants to have
bitcoin, bitcoin cash , eth, litecoin, waves, neo, straitis, powerledger all in the nano ledger s, this won't work?
It really depends on the mix of currencies being used. They refactored the device apps, such that "similar" currencies... ie. BTC, BCH, LTC, DOGE etc, all used very similar code, so you can install them all without much space usage. However, if you use wildly different currencies that don't share a common codebase, then the device apps are bigger and you're more likely to run into space issues.

NOTE: "deleting" the wallet, does not delete your coins. You're not really deleting the wallet, you're simply removing the coin app from your device. If you then reinstall that specific coin app to the device, the wallet and all your coins will be restored. There is NO danger of coin loss... it is just a mild inconvenience for people who have or trade a lot of different altcoins and want to switch between them all constantly. Having said that, Ledger Live alleviates this a little bit, by at least allowing you to "see" your altcoins regardless of whether or not you have the coin app installed on your Nano S (after you've set it up), as Ledger Live maintains "watching wallets" of all your coins once set up.

Quote
Also in terms of security, is it best to keep everything in the nano ledger s as oppose to diversify?  Example i keep btc in my nano ledger s but other coins like waves and others, i downloaded their own wallet and keep coins there.
It's hard to beat the security of a hardware wallet... it will generally also be safer, at least from a "hacking" point of view. However, it does then generate a "single point of failure"... if you lose the device or it is damaged, then your coins may not be accessible until you can arrange a replacement or there are other compatible wallets that you can restore the backup seed mnemonic into.

Last time a while back ago, it asked me to install ledger live on my nano ledger s and i never did this.  So would this be required first?  Also went on the nano ledger s site and notice that it requires to you to do firmware update.  So both of these are required before all of this?
Yes. Waves (and a lot of the other altcoins) is not available via the old Ledger Manager Chrome App. You can only get it from the "Manager" within Ledger Live.

Also, even if you didn't want to use waves... having the latest firmware is generally always a good idea.

Quote
The thing that is confusing is does the waves wallet need to be used together with the nano ledger s?
Yes, you have to use their web client... Waves is not supported directly within Ledger Live.

4930  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 09:46:50 PM
Most likely because the Chrome webapp is not being updated/monitored any more...

I suspect that the Countervalue API that it is using is outdated or possibly has been switched off... ie. the backend functionality that was retrieving exchange rates for the Chrome WebApp has been switched off, so it is showing the last (very outdated) BTC/USD exchange rate that was retrieved before it was turned off.

Update to Ledger Live... or turn the counter value setting OFF (in Settings -> Display) within the WebApp... and then manually use an external source like preev or google or <insert your favourite crypto exchange rate website here> to find the "fiat value" of your BTC.
4931  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Total Newbie Seeks Guidance On Transfer of Funds on: December 24, 2018, 07:05:32 AM
My goal was to be able to transfer these funds into my PayPal account - thereby making them more convenient for me to spend...
PayPal does not support CryptoCurrency. You cannot send BTC to PayPal and then spend $$$

You would need to convert your BTC to $$$ first and then transfer the $$$ to your PayPal. To do this, you're going to need to sell them on a "fiat" exchange like Coinbase that will then allow you to withdraw your funds to a bank account etc.

Alternatively, you would need to sell them using a service like LocalBitcoins that allows you to trade directly with other people... however, trying to sell Bitcoins for "PayPal" is NEVER a good idea, as the chances of being scammed is quite high as PayPal payments are reversible... Bitcoin transactions are not. So if you send bitcoins and someone deposits to your PayPal, they can then easily reverse the PayPal payment (or pay with a stolen credit card etc)... Then you end up with no btc and no PayPal! Undecided
4932  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory offline and no won't load db on: December 24, 2018, 06:40:56 AM
Which version of Armory are you running and where did you download it from?

If you used: https://www.bitcoinarmory.com/ <-- THIS IS OLD AND OUTDATED! It likely won't sync up properly with newer versions of Bitcoin Core (versions from 0.15+)

You need to get Armory from: https://btcarmory.com/ and make sure you get the latest one (0.96.4) from there.
4933  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Importing Ledger nano s xpub into Electrum on: December 24, 2018, 06:31:13 AM
In that case, you actually need to have the device connected every time you open the watch-only wallet.

If OP wants to be able to check his wallet (watch-only) anywhere without having to connect his Nano S to the PC and unlock it, he can do the method above, then go to Wallet -> Information -> Copy the ypub, then import it to create a new independent watch-only wallet  (not linked to the Nano S device).
TryNinja, you are spot on. The reason why I did not want to follow HCP's method is that it required the hardware wallet to access. Is there an easier way to implement the tool you mentioned?
That's not completely true...

You ONLY need the hardware device connected to check the wallet IF the wallet file is encrypted:

If you don't use encryption, you can open the watching wallet without the device connected. This isn't really a security concern as such, as no private keys or seeds etc are held in the wallet file. So, it only really has privacy implications, insofar that if your wallet file is somehow compromised/stolen, the thief will have access to your YPUB, addresses and transaction history. They can't spend your coins.
4934  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to add funds using a bitcoin atm receipt on: December 20, 2018, 09:32:08 PM
Thanks for the good advice.. Yes there was a QR code with public key written at the top
If your "receipt" did not contain a QR code (or sequence of letters and numbers) labelled as "Private Key" then your "friend" is possibly trying to scam you... Without the Private Key, you don't have access to the coins!

You'll be able to import a "public" key... and it will show the balance of the address... but you won't be able to spend the coins without the matching private key. So, make sure you have the private key!!!
4935  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Forgot the password on: December 20, 2018, 09:28:02 PM
I have the "bitcoin-wallet-backup-" file but i forgot the password, how can i restore it?
Without the password, the sad answer is that you can't... they're encrypted backups. Sad

You either need to remember the password to be able to restore the wallet file back into a compatible wallet (ie. Bitcoin Wallet for Android)... or you need to try and "brute force" the password using a tool like btcrecover as suggested by AdolfinWolf.
4936  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Importing Ledger nano s xpub into Electrum on: December 16, 2018, 09:59:59 PM
1) Why did you say "So, I believe that the Ledger SegWit wallet should be giving a "ypub"". Why couldn't this have been the zpub?
As already explained by TryNinja... YPUBs are for the "3"-type SegWit (aka P2SH-P2WPKH) addresses... whereas the ZPUBs are for the "bc1" (aka bech32) addresses... and Ledger does not generate bech32 addresses at this time.

Quote
2) You also mentioned the use of m/0 as the derivation path. What exactly is this? Reading this link (https://medium.com/bitcraft/hd-wallets-explained-from-high-level-to-nuts-and-bolts-9a41545f5b0), it means that you are setting the purpose' to 0? Why is this so?
It is because, in this instance, the XPUB that you see is NOT actually the Master Public Key for your wallet... instead, it is the Extended Public Key for the particular account within the Ledger wallet. In other words, it is already at the "m/49'/0'/0'" derivation level... so you just need to use "m/0" to start deriving addresses from this point.

If you were to specify the "full" derivation path (ie. m/49'/0'/0'/0) with this particular XPUB, you'd actually be deriving addresses at the starting point: "m/49'/0'/0'/49'/0'/0'/0"  Shocked

You can test this by experimenting with the Ian Coleman website:
- generate a random seed... DO NOT USE YOUR ACTUAL SEED!
- Click on BIP49...
- Copy the "Account Extended Public Key" and check the first address (path = m/49'/0'/0'/0/0)
- Paste the "Account Extended Public Key" into the "BIP32 Root Key" section at the top
- Click BIP141 tab
- Make sure the BIP32 derivation path = m/0 and that the Script Type is "P2WPKH nested in P2SH".
- Check the first address... (path = m/0/0)... it *SHOULD* be the same address as the one in step 3.

It works the same for legacy accounts from Ledger... (you just use BIP44 tab instead of BIP49... and BIP32 tab instead of BIP141 on the Ian Coleman website)
4937  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Coinomi Desktop on: December 16, 2018, 01:02:39 AM
Yeah, I'd be very surprised if after 18 months the wallet wasn't significantly different, if not vastly improved over the beta that I was using.

I mean, it worked... It was just the UI was a bit rubbish. Still, multi-currency wallets are very popular among the masses, especially the "traders".

But yes, for serious HODLers... Hardware or cold storage (airgap or paper etc) is usually the preferred option.
4938  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Importing Ledger nano s xpub into Electrum on: December 15, 2018, 08:09:27 PM
It seems they still haven't fixed this "bug" on the Ledger... I wrote about it here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2869129.msg29497443#msg29497443

Basically, you should be getting a YPUB, but for some reason, Ledger is still giving out XPUBs for the SegWit wallets Sad

The only method I currently know of to get the YPUB, is as outlined in the post I've linked... that is to say, you need to connect your Ledger Nano S to Electrum, and import the wallet using "New -> Standard Wallet -> Use a Hardware Device" and then specify the correct derivation path... once you've successfully created that wallet, if you use "Wallet -> Information", Electrum will display your YPUB.

Note that by connecting the Nano S to Electrum and using the "New -> Standard Wallet -> Use a Hardware Device" method... you're effectively just importing the YPUB and creating a watching only wallet anyway (it doesn't import the seed or private keys etc)... so it is probably the best way to achieve what you appear to be trying to achieve Wink
4939  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Transaction db.log and sweeping keys on: December 15, 2018, 07:54:03 PM
If you have keys, you can try sweeping them into a multicurrency wallets like Exodus or Coinomi etc and see if they find anything... but based on the information you have provided, it honestly sounds like there is nothing to find... Undecided
4940  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Coinomi Desktop on: December 15, 2018, 07:46:02 PM
I haven't heard of any Beta. The one you have tested, did it look like anything that they are currently showing on their website?
No it did not... the one I tested looked terrible and the UI looked like it was designed by a software developer and not a UI/UX specialist (Speaking as an ex-Software Developer) Tongue

In fact... I found the old .exe... so this is what it looked like:

As you can see, the mockup on their website looks a lot different.

Also, this might have been a REALLY long time ago... file date is 1st June 2017... it doesn't even have Bitcoin Cash in the coin types!  Shocked
