4941  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: October 27, 2015, 01:38:50 AM
I had an old burnt up bfl jalapeno, so I took the heat sink fan combo and mounted it onto a GS stick.

Holy cow, that looks awesome!  How warm to the touch does that massive sink get when you crank up the stick?

Not warm at all. The fan is 12v but I connected it to a usb plug 5v and it moves some good air and is also pretty much silent. The back heat sink is a little warm, I have a temp gun and will post stats when i get home from work.

{"hashrate1m": "27.6G", "hashrate5m": "26.5G", "hashrate1hr": "24.5G", "hashrate1d": "12.6G", "hashrate7d": "2.55G", "workers": 1, "bestshare": 17383283.667868529}

edit: mikestang look at the last picture, i have the old GS heatsink between the usb hub and the bfl heatsink. All the weight of the heatsink is resting on that. Plus the hub has a shroud around the jack, it really didnt sag without the green heatsink but i put it there for piece of mind.... kinda how you were thinking.

The numbers alone on the compac are pretty amazing on OC each time I am amazed wen someone goes up in 20+.   I mean 24G is insane for one stick miner.  I would love to see a comparison of how many of some of the old sticks to get to this.

That is like 72 or so block erupters packed into one usb stick.  Looking that it's just insane what these sticks are capable of doing.  I truly enjoy playing with them fun toys to say the least.

10-15-2015   164 blocks made  -------144 norm         + 20  but ⅓ were last  adj so + 14   blocks and about   +13%

10-16-2015.  144 blocks made = normal. So we are about + 14 with about 247 blocks made.  we dropped to about +6%

10-17-2015   136 blocks made vs 144 or -8          I see us at +6 blocks. I changed this as it was changed on the site

10-18-2015   148 blocks made      +4                  I see us at +10 blocks

10-19-2015   167 blocks made    +23         so + 33 blocks

10-20-2015   127 blocks made     -17.  so + 16  blocks

10-21-2015    140 blocks made - 4    so + 12 blocks

10-22-2015   158 blocks made + 14  total +26 blocks as of thur nite

10-23-2015   144 blocks made   so we stay at +26 blocks .

10-24-2015   142 not sure yet   drop to +24 blocks

10-25-2015.  162. Moves us up 18 blocks we are +42

10-26-2015  164 moves us up 20 blocks we are +62

Will check on above but I think we are over 3%

https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin

with a lot of us getting s-7's in this jump does make some sense

I think you are right not quite the wave I was expecting on S7's but it is a decent amount still.  Just not a cray jump, so hard to be to sad.

And price is over 290 on coinbase.  So we will see but price per bitcoin is looking really good during this entire difficulty change.
4943  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: good places to hide paper wallet ? on: October 27, 2015, 01:30:28 AM
I do not have much knowledge on pen drive storage. For long term storage we must need SSD. May be cost of buying is high but for a secured next generation saving we must go for SSD (Solid State Disk).

This is completely wrong and i will not suggest anyone to hide your paper wallet in a SSD.
For long term this is not recommended because if SSD has no electricity for a long time, the data inside can be erased.
Try to hide your paper wallet somewhere where you think that nobody will touch, or will have no idea about that place.

you can run your ssd on a different network, or even without any connection, just so it remain active with electricity and all

it would still be a cold storage, last time i've checked could storage mean only off line, not switched off completely

For this case HDD are better rather than SSD,
Because they can stay longer if you don't touch them.
I would suggest the OP to hide the paperwallet inside computer loudspeakers Smiley

Problem with that and many of the other conceal ideas is if there is a fire/act of god.  If you only work on concealment your paper wallet is subject to many things out of your control.

If using one really renting a safty deposit box at a bank is worth it depending on your holdings.  Much more secure and a great place to keep a backup.
4944  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to earn Bitcoins? on: October 27, 2015, 01:27:07 AM
SELL your bitcoin at 290$ and buy back at 200$
 Wink

but to buy at the price of $200 was very long, maybe bitcoin will continue to rise over $300 Tongue
Dont sell your bitcoin now before it reaches $300 Tongue
Need some time to touch this 300$ because its now again dropping stuck for some time 287$ but loving to stay here or rise in next few days

Coinbase is at 291 so pretty impressive considering we were at 230 for the longest time.  So we are crossing 290 on a lot of exchanges or close.

300 will be a trick we likely will be battling a lot of autosales at 300.  I just hope no dive after 300.   But likely if we hit it we see a dive for a bit.  Just hopefully quick recovery and does not dip to much.

Time will tell though on what will happen.

blockchain.info back online now

Yea you can use it again.  I suspect they had a lot to do.  Looks like some of the blockchain team was at a conference a day before it.  So they likely are very tired few day's if a conference and then work on whatever it was that took it down.

I think this would be a great example why no hot wallet is the "best" there are so much that is out of your hands.   With cold paper wallet it's pretty much all in your hands on control.

I will code a own faucet/dice on the site soon. Smiley

You can earn up to 25k satoshi
Thanks for the useful info.
I'll check this out.

Thanks for the useful info.
I'll check this out.

This thread hasn't been updated in over 3 years and I have no interest is updating it. Can you people please stop bumping it? xD

Over on the bottom left you can lock the thread.  I would suggest doing that.  Then no one can bump it.

Unless you want to update 3 years worth.... i mean only a few hundred hour or so project Smiley.

All time high of 400th! won't last long a short rental.

Thanks for all your time and rentals. 400TH is pretty impressive even if just for a short time.  Wow that is a lot of hash to be throwing around.

We just nee some luck eventually.  That would be nice.
4948  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: October 27, 2015, 01:08:55 AM
Its like the U3 gets stuck in some sort of initialization loop and some of the circuitry is allowing spikes by design.   I really dont feel like making a schematic for this thing to look for possible culprits...

<snip>

To keep it a little cooler, I have it balanced on the top of a powered on gridseed 5chip.  The gridseed fan helps keep it much cooler.

I chatted with a member here who took one of my U3s apart and he mentioned something about how crappy the circuitry is regarding the power and usb.  I don't know enough about hardware tech to repeat what he told be, but yes, I think there is a "short cut" somewhere in Bitmains schematic that causes most of the issues with these devices.

I also performed a similar cooling mod.  I run my U3 at 237.5freq 785volt, and even that makes the bottom heat sink almost uncomfortably hot.  With this mod it's barely warmer than ambient.

I find the first vs second U3 designs to be interesting.  The first one had heating issues... so it seems to be like it's a dummy guard on second one.  It allows all air pretty much to go through, but a cage to stop you from putting a finger in it.

I need to look at one of mine again on this noise but I have not seen a spot for noise or heard it.  That is biggest thing I still wonder on.
4949  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S7 watercooling on: October 27, 2015, 01:05:44 AM
right now wait for kit is my advise Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided

I don't see kits personally coming for this.  I think it will be the moding community that has one first.  The S5 there was a kit, but I don't think a ton of them sold. A lot were made from C1's being modded.

One problem is 3 blades... so a odd number so really it makes more sense if you you do 2 S7's and then have a even blade number of 6.  So you can put one on each side and not have a side wasted with nothing on it. (Suppose you could buy 1 blade and get a 4 blade S7).

But I don't see a kit coming, I think there will be a mod or two as there always is eventually  with water cooling.
4950  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S4 xoooooo ooooooo..... on: October 27, 2015, 12:57:50 AM
You may try restarting it after shutting it down for a 1/2 hour or so and see if the x's go away.  If it's
dirty inside the case you may blow it off so it's able to cool properly.  While the case is off make sure (Unplug First) the connections are all tight and the boards are securely tightened down as well as the power connectors.
* If it's the stock power supply that is usually the culprit, it's under powered and not supplying enough juice to the hashing boards.  Do you have a power meter to see if it's not pulling close to the 1400w it's rated.  Mine wouldn't pull more than a 1000w from the wall and appeared that one board was bad.  New power supply plugged in resolved what I thought was a bad board.

I was lucky and never hit the bad S4 PSU.  But sadly a lot hit them with S4's.  Testing it is not a bad idea at all.

My suggestion on cleaning is if you have owned it for a while it's not a bad idea at all.  When I sold my S4's they did not look bad on outside, but I opened it and lot of dust in a not to dusty area.  I would turn off as suggested and open it up look fan's first as they tend to hold dust.  You can unscrew metal cover if really bad and get to blades easy.   Then focus on heat sinks on blades you will need a can of air for sure on this project.

If nothing else you have a nice clean S4 after it.
4951  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: October 27, 2015, 12:49:58 AM
This hash board burning instance if the internet fails.

What is happening? Do the fans shut down when the internet is no longer sensed? If that is the case, it would not be hard to add a separate fan controller to keep the fans push/pulling air across the boards as a safety precaution while or if they ( Bitmain ) even bothers to provide a fix.

I suspect if it is happening it is something hard to replicate.  I never could replicate on my S5, but some had the issue and was a pain for them.  On S5 I even without internet a few times never had a big issue.

On S7 it is kinda scary to hear people mention this problem.  I'm hoping it's a very small subset of machines.

4953  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What mining asic is profitable in my country? on: October 27, 2015, 12:44:00 AM
Hi guys i just want to know if mining is profitable in my country.. My electricity cost is 0.53$ what do you think what asic is good to be profitable?

The rest of the guys are totally right... i have 0.27€/kwh, and i'm mining at a loss (i'm mining just for fun with very old HW).

I wouldn't recommend cloudmining tough... There are only a handfull of companies i would trust, but the amount of coins you make is so low it's hardly worth it...

What hardware are you running still?  I have to give you some dedication points for still mining at that rate.

That electricity price is rediclous.

Like i said, really old one Wink
I'm running 2 antminer U2's and one gridseed gc3355.

for sha256, i'm running at about 3Ghz, and about 350k scrypt (i know i can actually use the gridseed for dual mining, but i'm actually using an old PSU that isn't suitable for the power draw the dual mining would cause)...

It's just for fun, i'm actually just burning a bit of electricity, finding some shares and generating almost no satoshi's (i could actually make a lot more by spending 15 minutes/day on faucets)

Yea sadly you will never be able to mine profitable in that range.  Just to high of costs, really high to be honest.

Your best bet is hosting and cloud.   You will need to get to around .10 cents before I would do anything more then your doing.  Maybe get a few compac's if you want more devices as they won't cost much to run for a long time.  But any big gear is kinda out of the picture.
4954  Other / Archival / Re: Why I sold my S5 :/ on: October 27, 2015, 12:40:53 AM
If you want quiet look at Avalon 4.1 for example it comes quiet, no mods needed.  I wish you would have asked on the S5 before buying, and also before selling.

The S5 run's hot and loud.  That is just how it was made.  There are some who modded it.  I think most likely is you modding with much quieter fan's can do push/pull even.  But you sold it... so would be a shame to buy another S5.

There are rumors of a new S7 that no one knows much about... so if you wait it is possible it's smaller but no one knows for sure.  But chances are it will still be loud, even changing fan's out voids warranty though.

Great information! Can you tell me a little more about the Avalon 4.1? How much is it?

Looks pretty cool! https://ehash.com/product/avalon4-module-1t/

Its very hard to get, i had a buying thread opened for months saying i'm interested in buying one and i never had anyone PM me about it, ever. Its more expensive than the S5, its a rare unit, not many were built and the price did not really drop.

In term of value i'd put it around 1BTC shipped in term of ROI, a bit more expensive than a S5 but its actual sale value is definitively higher, probably close to 400USD or 1.5BTC~

Yuck! I would like to get back into the game any ideas? Maybe $200ish to spend?

What is your electricity cost/rate in per/kWh? If its over 0.08~0.1$/kWh i'd say just forget it, grab a small USB miner for fun and thats pretty much it. Maybe something a little bit bigger to run as a lottery miner.

Currently 0.08 - 0.10

Thats more than what you'd pay for hosted mining so...Its honestly hard to recommend you anything.

Odds are even something efficient than a S7 will not ROI before the halving, which at which point make any profit an uncertain thing.
And going back to a S5 is also not recommended since your electricity cost would already take a significant portion of the earning. If you get S5's for 200$~ you could try it but its very hard to get it in the low 200$'s. Though not impossible. You might be able to break even after 6 months and then profit by selling it.

Finding a hosted solution might be better however.

A lot of hosting centers are around the .10 area.   Once having some guess they will go down more, but hard to say now.  Some are a tad below but a lot want X watts to get that lower rate.

As far ass ROI before having really all depends.  Those buying S7 when was 280 or so did a lot better then those buying at 230.     And it could change even more we don't know.   But at having the unit will still have value for sure on S7.  So I predict some might have to sell to ROI, but I see a lot ROI on them.
4955  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is mining dead ? on: October 27, 2015, 12:35:39 AM
The most scammer projects like hyip offers something like 20% or more montly, soo is a good way to stay away from scammer following these advice. One thing that should be done by cloud companies is say: we dont know how many time you will roi and if you will be able,we will keep paying as long as we get some income. But we all know no one will say hey dont invest more at me im here to be honest and help you to not invest at me.

If anyone promises X percent per any time chances are you should not invest.  You really cannot guarantee even ROI on most things if your honest.  People can make it if doing smart investments and right timing.

But with difficulty changes, price changes, promising X back in anytime frame is pretty much impossible.  Only way would be if other side is willing to pay if you did not make it, which is not a sustainable business method if they lose money.
4956  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hardware Prospects for 2015-2016 Mining on: October 27, 2015, 12:32:05 AM
The prospects for the home miner is not good.   Centralization is increasing along with the infrastructure requirement (case & point - SP50).  I think we will see a rise in the private funding of mining cooperatives or mining royalty trusts.  KNC I believe is no longer selling to the public and I think Bitfury followed the same path.

I'm not sure SP really was mainly focused on data center gear.  They later came with sp20 jackson for home, but they reported at the end they were selling at a loss.  So them going just data center is not huge surprise.  We might see some data center gear later on smaller data centers or hobby miners.  But home miners wanting to put on 110/120 is going to be hard.

I think there will be a decent amount of gear but it will be for what I consider "hobby" miners. This is a step between home and data center.  It's those home miners with a good amount of power and 220/240.

I think the year for home miner will have some, but lower and lower machines for just home on 110/120.
4957  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best bitcoin wallet? on: October 26, 2015, 10:02:13 PM
blockchains been getting a lot of downtime as ive seen, plus webwallets really arent my type of thing, i like paper wallets the most

Blockchain has a hard day so far today - https://twitter.com/blockchain .  It is kinda a pain since a lot of things use it's API.

I wish they would come back soon.   But it is a good example of why cold wallet is likely best for long term storage.  You can scan it or import into many different wallets.  It stops things like a site being down from stopping you from accessing your bitcoins.

look.

you need to unplug this death trap NOW.

aluminum and copper wiring DO NOT PLAY WELL TOGETHER.

I agree. Since the aluminum wiring expands when it is warmed and contracts when cool much more then a copper one I suggest OP to use copper wiring only. I know that the copper wiring is more expensive but it is worth the price IMO.

I think were all in agreement.  But I don't think OP will be doing this from his view on the wiring.   I don't think he truly  understands how scary it is.

I mean you go to sleep... if that thing catches fire in middle of night that would be horrible.  Make sure you have a lot of fire alarms in your house as that wiring truly is unsafe.

So all this tells me, that I shouldn't try mining with S7 at my home with APW3-12-1600 PSU.

What if I buy this type of PSU http://www.frys.com/product/6806106?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I think lot of other people are doing same. See here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNbaZwqdPAc

He is using http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152044 PSU with S5 Miner.

However, I can't find power consumption for S5 whether it's 120 or 240V

S5 and S7 are really nothing alike on power.  I mean just on ports alone were talking 4 PCIe ports compared to 9 + 1 PCIe ports.     I personally would not pick that raidmax if your talking about powering the S7.

If you don't use all 9 power ports you will void warranty, and 1 for controller.   More and more home and hobby miners I think you will see getting 240.
