4941  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is my card running hot? Is this normal? on: September 01, 2011, 12:30:29 AM
as suggested already: rear fan out (get a 120), side in. is there  a front fan mount? if not hack one in for a 120 intake. that 5830 has a dead air space below it you want to get fresh air to.

try pulling the lower slot covers (all the ones below the card) and let some air in that way (assuming negative case pressure which it looks like you have).

with decent airflow you should be able to get the card to near or over 1 Ghz.. see my sig. however I do run an open case as its in the basement. card fan is 65%, runs in the 60's temp wise.

for temps to shoot for, lower 80's is as high as I like to see. preferable 70's or below. 60's is sweet. high 80's I do not like for 24/7 temps.

whats the PSU?

Even if SolidCoin is ten times better in every measurable sense, if Bitcoin is accepted at ten times as many places, Bitcoin will keep existing.

true, this.

look what happened with betamax vs VHS. basically, betamax was better in every way yet VHS won out
4943  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: If you could design a custom graphics card.. on: August 30, 2011, 11:03:08 AM
switch for a built in internal dummy plug. I know 11.7 and up drivers dont need it but not all want to run the latest drivers.

switch for two cooling profiles. "quiet" and "cool" so less software fan tweaking. some cards already have this.

optional bracket with extra large vents at the expense of video connectors. video connectors would have to be removable kinda like cards that have optional connectors (like 1/2 height cards, some connectors are on a cable for the full height bracket, and not used on the 1/2 height).

ball bearing, serviceable fans.

of course this will never happen (see ASIC stuff) but its fun to dream heh.
4944  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Going offline for hurricane irene on: August 28, 2011, 05:03:38 PM
no mining here ATM, all electronics are unplugged but this rig on its UPS and its not mining to extend UPS runtime if/when the power goes out. then its generator time and thats mainly for freezer, fridge, microwave and, most important, COFFEE MAKER.

but Ill run this rig on generator with its cellular internet, assuming the tower still exists and functions.. no mining though, thats 200 watts or so that will be needed elsewhere. this rig will just be for internet, and running in power saving mode.

got 1 week of fuel and oil changes for the generator. as long as the house doesnt take much damage we should be good.
4945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL Going under 10 Thash because of Irene Vote now! on: August 28, 2011, 03:03:19 PM
Im not surprised. 4 million without power, and it seems another million or so every time I check.

the UPS has kicked in 6 times in the last 4 hours. and the peak of the storm is still 3 hours away. heh. wonder if Im going to work tomorrow.
4946  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 8-pin to molex as good as 8-pin PCIe connector? on: August 28, 2011, 11:09:17 AM
when done right theres no difference (ignoring an insignificant loss in voltage due to extra connectors).

if its a multi rail PSU just make sure power draw is in spec each rail and try to load the rails evenly. if single rail try to load the connector strings evenly, you dont want 60 amps on one string for example.
4947  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Sapphire TRIXX Command Line/Automation on: August 28, 2011, 07:07:53 AM
been lucky so far then.

thanks for the heads up. I dont overvolt so Ill look into it.
4948  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL Going under 10 Thash because of Irene Vote now! on: August 28, 2011, 07:03:33 AM
Geez - if I was like you guys, ie> in the path, I would shut down mining as soon as the winds pickup - sometimes when power goes out it will trip on and off 10 or 20 times quick, very bad for computers running at max - even with surge protectors!

yup, thats the plan. actually, the NOAA radio alarm went off 1/2 ago (flash flood warning) and thunderstorms are on the way. Irene is still 6 hours away more or less but all electronics are now off and unplugged except for this rig on a UPS. its still mining away heh but Ill shut the miner off when it gets bad to extend UPS run time a bit.
4949  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL Going under 10 Thash because of Irene Vote now! on: August 28, 2011, 01:12:35 AM
most of my 860 Mhash will be offline if the power is out. have a generator and cellular internet so if the cell tower still exists and has power  Ill probably have one rig mining off and on. but Im not gonna waste too much generator power on mining.. the well, freezer, fridge, microwave and coffee maker get priority Smiley

staye safe east coasters, we will just ride it out yeee ha!
4950  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: DC fan 12v x4 - How to connect to Corsair PSU? on: August 27, 2011, 11:02:51 PM
you can also get em at best buy and radio shack if you find shipping cost is crazy. Didnt notice what shipping was actually, I just just linked to the 1st place that showed what it was.

they also have SATA "Y" splitters.
4951  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: DC fan 12v x4 - How to connect to Corsair PSU? on: August 27, 2011, 06:01:42 PM
if youre not comfortable with pulling molex connectors on the PSU apart grab something like this molex y adapter and cut the molex connectors off the end, splice the wires to the fans. the yellow wire to the molex is 12v, so that would go to the fans red (probably red anyway) wire. then black to black. you can run all 4 off one yellow and one black if you want, or 2 on each.

link to the fans and I can walk you through it.
4952  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Sapphire TRIXX Command Line/Automation on: August 27, 2011, 05:33:27 PM
why do you need a command line?

TRIXX has a tick box that automatically sets clocks and fan on boot and/or startup. works with my 5830 and xp pro rig.

or am I missing something?

6870 closed case 60% fan 1005 Mhz 70's (AC MX2 thermal compound, was 80's stock) non ref
6770 closed case 60% fan 1010 Mhz 60's sometimes low 70's non ref
5830 open case   65% fan 1050 Mhz 60's non ref

[coinminer being flagged]

tell MSE (or whatever) it to Remove or Quarantine it and relax.

Yeah bit of a false positive tbqh. Not needed for GPU mining so Quarrantine it if you like, I just "allow" it.

true, not a threat per se. it was flagged a "medium" threat and listed as a legit program. just a possible symptom of a trojan or other problem.

as I dont use it (or ever plan to) I figure Ill tell MSE to zap it and that way if something ever tried to drop it its toast.
4955  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mining viruses on: August 25, 2011, 11:07:03 AM
MSE flagged coinminer when I copied the july version of guiminer to a backup drive in preparation to install the new aug version. coinminer is not used by guiminer unless you call it specifically, and is not in the new version.

tell MSE (or whatever) it to Remove or Quarantine it and relax.. well, thats IF you found it in an old version of guiminer anyway. otherwise something tried to drop it in yer system.
4956  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 100% CPU question about power consumption and cpu affinity on: August 23, 2011, 07:27:22 AM
may be the -f1. Ive noticed that after a point (20 or so) the lower the f number the higher the CPU usage, especially on undernourished CPUs like my P4.

try at -f15 (where my P4/5830 is)  -f30 or even -f45. loose a bit of hashing but the drop in CPU power draw may be worth it.
4957  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 100% CPU question about power consumption and cpu affinity on: August 21, 2011, 06:21:28 PM
doubt its CPU. I run a 5830 on a P4 prescott 2.8 @ 10% CPU usage. XP SP3, SDK 2.1, 11.2 driver (note: you dont want this combo of driver/sdk, its just an example of what usage I get with an anemic CPU).

what miner and settings? driver and sdk version? OS?

any other software on the rig?

task manager (if win based) shows it the miner @ 100%, and nothing else using CPU?
4958  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Pictures of NORMAL PC case mining rigs (Living Room/Office miners) on: August 21, 2011, 06:06:53 PM
[chieftec case with side radiator]

sweet Smiley

I also have that case, and have though of running my dedicated miner in it (its open air atm). wont be on water as yours is though Sad thought of 4 x 120 side fans, plus replace the 2x80 front/rear with 2x120s front/rear. dremel ftw!

got any inside the case pics?
4959  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: what else can the mining rig do while its mining? on: August 21, 2011, 01:24:36 PM

Yes, some BOINC or F@H project would be a good way to contribute your computing power.

+1

mining does not take much CPU and F@H (the SMP [CPU] client) is a low priority task, ie does not take away from the miner resources.
4960  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 4 5830 Sapphire Extreme GPU temps questions on: August 20, 2011, 08:19:14 PM
AS 5? negative.

it needs to be thermal cycled over a week or so to break in and set for max performance.. IE turned off for several hours at least every day or so for a week.  like, you want to do that with your miners? it also tends to dry out and needs to be re applied every year or so, if that matters.

artic cooling MX2 (for example) dropped my ASUS directCU 6870 temps 7 C.. and thats not their best either. its just very easy to apply, no break in, apply and go 24/7.

check around, there are better thermal pastes than AS 5. ICD7 (diamond based, it rocks but is hard to apply), AC MX2, AC MX4, Tuniq TX2.. theres more these are just off the top of me head.
