4941  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Newbie fresh to bitcoin seeking advice! on: November 20, 2015, 08:46:10 AM
I'm just really looking to do mining for fun. Electricity is relatively cheap in Florida, US. I do have the space for a larger rig if it peaks my interests. Price range $0-$500. Technological knowledge should be sufficient, if I have problems usually I resort to Google or forums such as these! Thank you for the quick response!

well then go for s3 or s5, you can find one s5 for 300-350 used or around that price, i've already spotted one on ebay

or search here on the market, if you don't trust ebay

I agree with Amph.
You can't really go wrong if you're mining for fun, and buy one or two S3 or S5's...
If it's really for fun and has nothing to do with profit, you could also consider a couple compaq stickminers. You'll need to keep a PC running in order to use them tough, and you'll also need a powered USB hub. Their hashrate will be lower than an S3 tough (you'll need  20-40 stickminers to replace 1 S3 when talking about hashrate. Their power consumption is really low tough, but you have to keep a PC or raspberry pi running).
I do advise them if you're a homeminer for fun because: they are easily transportable, silent, safe, power efficient, cheap.

Btw: as a new user, i would also encourage you to buy from this forum, but always use an escrow!
4942  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Newbie fresh to bitcoin seeking advice! on: November 20, 2015, 07:02:41 AM
Hi,

The mining subforum should contain more than enough topics to cover every question you might have...

Just a couple of preliminary questions before people start giving advice:
  • you've indicated you know you're quite late in the game... will you be mining for fun, or for profit?
  • do you know your electricity price
  • what's the budget
  • do you have sufficient technical knowledge
  • in case somebody points you towards bigger mining rigs, do you have a place for them? They produce a lot of heat and noise, and consume quite some power
  • what is your country?
4943  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Testnet bitcoin value? on: November 19, 2015, 01:52:40 PM
Haha I bet there will be all bunch of people that will now go and hit the faucets after seeing this thread and all this by hoping that one day even the test net bitcoins will have a value!

Heck I didn't even know that test net faucets do exist!
They exist?
What would be the point of that? I bet it'll take pretty long time before testnet coins are allowed on any exchange. However when decentralized exchanges launch I see people actually trading testnet coins.
And then they won't be able to spend then once the testnet is reset. This has already happened twice in the past. We are already on the third version of the testnet. The point of the testnet is for testing only, not for actually trading and actually having value. It is for technical  development without actually wasting money. No one will care if you lose a free testnet bitcoins while testing something, but you will definitely care if you lose a few mainnet bitcoins due to a faulty program that you are testing.

Here is a good testnet faucet: http://tpfaucet.appspot.com

If i remember correctly, the reason why the testnet was reset, was exactly because people started trading testnet coins... So when they start having a value, the testnet will probably be reset once more...
4944  Economy / Gambling / Re: Any advice to start gambling? on: November 19, 2015, 08:22:26 AM
Listen to the two other guys that responded to this thread...

Any advice to start gambling: Don't gamble Wink, gambling is one of the sure ways to lose all your coins in the end.
Rather invest them... At least your coins will serve a greater good, other than lining the pockets of the casino owner (or siteowner)
4945  Other / Meta / Re: The Definition of a Low Quality Post on: November 18, 2015, 01:06:20 PM
So banning people who 'like to post' is wrong but banning people who like to post, plus are wearing signature at the same time is a justified act?
I sense a disturbance in the force here.

Certainly not...
Agreed, it's a slippery slope.

The thing i wanted to say is that everybody making nonsense spamposts should get a warning (be it banning or something else). It's just a lot easyer to consider someone to be maliciously spamming if he/she is clearly pushing his/her sig down other user's throat in order to drive up their postcount (and receive more money from their sigcampaign).
If somebody isn't wearing a sig, in my eye's it's less clear if he's actually trying to spam, or just having fun by posting a lot...

I hope that made sense  Grin

Btw: my sigcampaign doesn't pay me for posts in meta, so i hope this post doesn't get considered sigspam Wink
4946  Other / Meta / Re: The Definition of a Low Quality Post on: November 18, 2015, 10:56:16 AM
I think the definition of the low quality post is that they are posting but not related to the topic. That's why their posts are being deleted.

The definition of low quality posts is in your profile, 520 posts with 28 activity? Jesus Christ, you made 520 posts in 20 days, thats insane and you are not even wearing a signature, i cant believe it.
What's wrong with it? If there's a wrong about it then my apologies. I am only new here but I'm trying to fit myself in this kind of forum. The thing that I don't understand at all is why they are always judging me. They don't even know how to understand my situation.

The fact that you're not wearing a signature is actually a good thing IMO... If you made 520 posts in 20 days, but you were wearing a signature, people would jump to the conclusion that you were spamming a sig campaign...
In your case: in my opinion, you look like somebody who just likes to post... Which is OK for me Smiley
4947  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: AntMiner u3 stop working after a few hours on: November 18, 2015, 08:05:16 AM
i set up a time switcher. every 4h 1minute. no problems since 16h..

thanks for your help

Interesting idea I've heard of someone mention it before but never seen it tried.  Please let us know as that is a nice and cheap way of doing it.

I'm currently using software and a R1 to do it.   Its nice and quick to fix zombies but did cost be more then a timer switch.

But if you already own an R1, i guess the timer switch i proposed is a lesser sollution.
From what i heared, the R1 costs a bit of money, but works like a charm. Can you confirm this for the OP, so he know if it's worthwile to buy an R1?
4948  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Shouldnt we wait for Halving before buying new miners? on: November 18, 2015, 07:25:00 AM
Like others have said: it's risky...
But if you like gambling, i would say go for it  Cool

The chance that the price will rise due to the halving is good, the chance that newer and more efficient miners come out in the near future is reasonable (but how long will it take... nobody knows).
There's also the odd chance that other people will turn off their mining equipment because they run old miners and they're no longer making a profit after the halving, i guess?

All in all, i think i would buy some S7's right now if my electricity rates weren't this outrageous... It'll take more than 30 weeks untill the halving (if i'm correct), and even after the halving, there's still a good chance you'll ROI (but it's an gamble). Add the resell value of the S7's, and you'll have a decent chance of making a profit.
4949  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: AntMiner u3 stop working after a few hours on: November 17, 2015, 10:38:56 AM
did anything helps, for customer voltage or frequency?

./bfgminer --set antminer:voltage=x850 --set antminer:clock=x982 --set antminer:timing=0.0054 -S ant miner:all

e.g.?

As far as i could tell, the only thing that helped was resetting it...
4950  Economy / Services / Re: Sr Member Looking for a Signature Campaign on: November 16, 2015, 01:23:43 PM
http://www.bctalkaccountpricer.info/ says your Post Quality is Good

Your trust is OK...

I don't see many posts in off-topic or regional

So, everything should be OK... The only problem is that if mexxer-2 is right, your account was sold... A sig campaign manager might want to see the new owner's post quality before accepting him/her? That's the only problem i can imagine...
4951  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: AntMiner u3 stop working after a few hours on: November 16, 2015, 12:41:34 PM
thanks for your help. so i have to try to disconnect the power supply every 10 hours or so.

Personally, i would suggest disconnecting it more often... You can buy a timer like this one:

http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/The-110V-timer-US-timer-power-plug-timing-switch-power-supply-timer-reminder/609192_1329390759.html

(just googled for that link, i have no affiliation with aliexpress, nor can i say i have experience with the timer in the link).

I would personally switch the power off for 1 minute every 3-4 hours or so...
4952  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: have i seen the last of my bitcoins on: November 16, 2015, 10:39:44 AM
I've never heared about a 7 day waiting period...

If you send coins to an address that has not been generated, i think they'll just sit in this address forever, since nobody has the private key to this address (since it hasn't been generated by anybody).

IF it's an address you copy/pasted, and it does exist, you can always try to find the owner, or send him a message... And hope he's kind enough to refund your money (no guarantees)
4953  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: AntMiner u3 stop working after a few hours on: November 16, 2015, 09:59:33 AM
oh okay, it means that isn't really a solution.
did you know what is the problem? The u3 miner? or the combination of mac & the miner? or something else?

thanks

paD

As i said before, i'm not an U3 owner, but from what i've read, it's the U3 itself.
Some sort of design flaw or something... People were experimenting with modding their U3's, and improved the amount of time they would keep hashing, but after a while, they still "zombied".

The only partial sollutions were the two sollutions i gave in my previous post Wink
Eventough they are not perfect, they still make sure you have a hands-free mining experience (in other words, when using these sollutions, you can achieve a decent uptime for your miners without having to check if they're still mining every couple of hours)
4954  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin issues on: November 16, 2015, 09:57:05 AM
My biggest problem with Bitcoin is definitely the transaction times. Most of my transactions are processed in around 10 minutes. The only problem is that some of the transactions take around 3 or 4 hours which is too long to wait for.

3-4 hours is really long... Do you add enough miner fees?
To little fees is the only reason i can image, otherwise your transaction should be included in 10-20 minutes max...
4955  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: AntMiner u3 stop working after a few hours on: November 16, 2015, 08:18:29 AM
There's a whole thread about this zombie problem

I don't own one, but because i'm interested in technology, i browsed it a while ago.
If i remember correctly, it boils down to two sollutions:

- Buy a modified R1 with custom firmware
- hook the power up to a timer and reset the power every couple of hours
4956  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin issues on: November 16, 2015, 08:17:17 AM
The only big problem i ran into when starting out, was buying bitcoins...

For a newbie, it's just not clear where to buy bitcoins without getting scammed.

Offcourse, now i know where to buy them, but i think this is a serious problem if we ever want to go mainstream.
4957  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is it theoretically possible on: November 14, 2015, 08:25:41 AM
Lets say you have 1mh.  Is it theoretically possible to solve a block at current difficulties ?  I'm assuming it is, but really does someone know for sure ?

And what if you had 1 billion people with 1mh.  How would that skew the bitcoin block finds ?  It may not be so far fetched to provide 1 billion people with  very small mining power, whether they are aware of not.

Ok everybody has written this off, but just returning to the original question. As I suspected I did get the decimal point a few places wrong in my first reply, too much red wine, but everyone seems to be ignoring the second part of the question?

And what if you had 1 billion people with 1mh.

So by my reckoning 1MH is 1,000,000 and a Billion is 1,000,000,000 so putting these together we get 1,000,000,000,000,000 which I make 1PH.

So you are not going to rule the World but you would have 1/500 of the Current network Hash rate, and would find a few Blocks.  Smiley

Rich

This is actually pretty intresting... If my memory serves me correct the world population is around 7 billion.
So, if everybody on the whole world would have a decent smartphone, and would use it to mine... The whole world population would have about 1/50th of the hashrate. While 49/50th of the hashrate would still be controlled by guys running ASICS... This actually sounds pretty grim to me
4958  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Please help me, you guys know what youre talking about and i need help! on: November 13, 2015, 06:40:22 PM
I have to agree with omegastarscream... Please explain a bit clearer...

But, what i can already tell you: a transaction either gets broadcasted, included in a block and confirmed OR... It doesn't...

So, saying that you transferred bitcoin from addy A to addy B, but addy B only received part of said bitcoin is virtually impossible (unless the sent amount was sent in several transactions).
Also, if you have the keys to both accounts, your funds will most likely be recoverable. If you sent funds to an account you don't own, and the owner doesn't admit to receiving said funds, you're in a lot of troubles..
4959  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is it theoretically possible on: November 13, 2015, 07:31:14 AM
I hope you were just philosophising... Altough you could solve a block with your cellphone, you will break it in a very short time (the phone, not the block).

Chances are higher of winning your national lottery with buying just 1 ticket/week than actually mining a block with your phone... And if you win the lottery, you'll make a lot more money than you'll make by finding a block...

proof:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Non-specialized_hardware_comparison
Tells me that smartphones can hash at 1.3 Mhash/s.

https://alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator
Tells me that this hashrate makes 0.0000072BTC/year

25/0.0000072 = 1 block every 3.472.222 years...
One block (preev rate) = 8.474$

So, given there is no halving, and no diff increase, it'll take you 3.5 million years to mine a block with your phone (on average) Grin

The odds of winning euromillions:
1 in 116,531,800, giving you   €46,720,282.16 (https://www.euro-millions.com/odds-of-winning)
Given that you play 1 ticket a week for 3.5 million years, you'll buy 182 million tickets... So you'll statistically win 1.5 times... Giving you 73 million...

These are you expected profits... the expected cost of 1 euromillions ticket is 2€... The cost of mining 24/7 with your phone is the cost of a new phone every couple of months + the cost of your electricity. Even tough there is no objective way to quantify this, i'm pretty sure it's higher than 2€/week Wink

These are all averages offcourse... it IS possible you'll mine a block with your cellphone after mining 2 minutes, and it IS possible that you'll buy 1 lottery ticket a week for 10 million years without winning... These are just averages and odds Smiley

Last sidenode: i'm not really a fan of gambling in any way, so i wouldn't suggest buying lottery tickets, nor would i suggest mining with your phone... But each to his own Smiley
4960  Economy / Speculation / Re: What will be the highest price BTC can see in 2015? on: November 12, 2015, 01:08:50 PM
I personally think 502$ was the top for this year... I hope we'll get around $600-$700 after the halving next year... But that's only guessing  Grin
