4961  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin just became the national currency of the tiny island Pontinha on: March 19, 2016, 01:10:41 AM
I was excited for a minute when I clicked the link, till I realised it was just a small family adopting BTC  Grin

Venezuela is panicking about it: they've arrested two miners. See

Here is an English language report:

4963  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Remember back in 2013 there was a movie called "Life On Bitcoin"... on: March 18, 2016, 05:31:16 PM
It did get made and released in 2015. Here's the IMDB review:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3910512/

They gave it four stars.
4964  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Purchasing bitcoin online? on: March 18, 2016, 05:22:59 PM
If you are Australian, localbitcoins Australia might be worth a try:

https://localbitcoins.com/country/AU

Otherwise get your coins indirectly - mine a small alt and then sell those coins for BTC. Or do a small freelance job paying in BTC.
4965  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Xapo or Coinbase ? Which is better and Why ? on: March 18, 2016, 04:32:19 PM
Coinbase is the better service. But be careful - they comply with US regulations, so they monitor where you send your coins. Don't use them to send coins to a gambling destination for instance. Just use coinbase for normal shopping and another wallet for everything else.
4966  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First major bank has embraced bitcoin adding it to their services on: March 18, 2016, 03:59:55 PM

any kind of positive publicity that bitcoin can get is good. i am sick and tired of all the media calling bitcoin criminal's money.

Yup.

Ten million respectable US automobile association members using BTC helps make it mainstream. The more "normal" people using BTC the better.
4967  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How much will cost Dogecoin after 5-10 years? on: March 18, 2016, 03:55:59 PM
There's definitely a chance it won't exist in 10 years, but if you go over to reddit and see the supporters they have there, it's kind of incredible.  Can't really spend them anywhere.

Actually the doge community on reddit do a lot of spending and it's used a lot for tipping and micro transactions because the fee is so low.

Given how many billion doge are in existence, it's amazing that the price holds pretty steady between about 40 and 60 satoshis. I think it's a coin that will last. It's litecoin that is in danger because no-one actually uses it.
4968  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First major bank has embraced bitcoin adding it to their services on: March 18, 2016, 03:46:28 PM
From the article it seems whatever services they are integrating bitcoin with is via coinbase. Meh.

Yes, they are giving their services through Coinbase. So in reality its just an extension to the coinbase.
You cannot say that bank has introduced dealing with bitcoin directly.

Newsflash - most ordinary people don't want the hassle of wallets on their computer, making sure it doesn't get stolen, retrieving the wallet after the computer crashes, etc.

It's like email - adoption didn't happen till people were able to use third party services like AOL or Yahoo. No-one wanted to buy a domain, set up hosting, use an email connected to that domain, etc etc.

Coinbase is how BTC will go mainstream if it does at all.
4969  Economy / Speculation / Re: Question to the real G's over here. on: March 18, 2016, 03:41:44 PM
Banks tend to ask questions if the amount of money deposited is more than about $1000 - in some places $600. So don't sell all at once. Do it very slowly over a period of at least a year.
4970  Economy / Economics / Re: Why Latin American economies are turning to bitcoin on: March 18, 2016, 02:49:36 PM
That sounds good, but are they? I think if any significant part of a country, or even the rich in a country, decided to 'turn to Bitcoin' the price would be much higher than it is now.

The price went from about $200 at the end of last year to about $400 now - and that coincides with the oil price crash sending Venezuela into a tailspin.

Coinbase make it easy to convert fiat into BTC. Adoption won't happen unless people are people are able to do that...
4972  Other / Politics & Society / Re: BERNIE SANDERS, WEIRDO IN CHIEF on: March 17, 2016, 08:46:26 PM

His wealth is an achievement no matter what way you shake it. It's not uncommon to be bankrupted a few times on the way to a fortune. And he could have made lots of money via a mutual fund or lost it in a year (like anyone else, so that's a canard).

He has defaulted FOUR times. According to the following he has defaulted by $4.7 billion. See

http://dividendreference.com/articles/2015/1000637/donald-trump-bankruptcies/

And Forbes thinks he is worth just $200 million.

Losing money like that is not an "achievement". It's a form of theft. It's no good thinking he only defaulted to banks and rich investors and therefore it is OK. Banks had to be bailed out by taxpayers because people like Trump don't pay their loans.

If someone borrowed from you and didn't pay it back would you think a) what a clever man for scamming me, he should be POTUS, or b) what a crook?
4973  Other / Archival / Re: Giving Micro loans (Newbies welcomes) on: March 17, 2016, 08:25:16 PM
You are better off lending through somewhere like BTCJam, where at least you can look at people's loan history and whether they have paid back other people. Otherwise, the risk is too great.
4974  Other / Off-topic / Re: What are the things I need to include in a bitcoin guide for beginners? on: March 17, 2016, 08:03:50 PM
You need to explain how the fees work. Most people think of fees as a % of bitcoin and when they send large combinations of dust, they don't understand why the fees are so high.

What they don't understand is that fees are based on bytes being sent and if your output is made up of a large quantity of inputs, the bytes are huge, and hence the fee is huge.

So and explanation of bytes, how they affect fees, and also an explanation of how priority and biitcoindays works, would be helpful.
4975  Other / Politics & Society / Re: BERNIE SANDERS, WEIRDO IN CHIEF on: March 17, 2016, 07:53:36 PM

What achievements are you talking about?  The man could have made 100x as much money if he would have invested it in a mutual fund... He has a dozen or more failed businesses... he's a racist, bigot and fascist... he's declared bankruptcy 4 times... he incites violence... what achievements?

Agree with this - there is a rumor that Trump went into reality TV because no one would lend him money anymore. And Forbes thinks he's worth just $200 million though Trump claims he's worth $3bilion (but won't release his tax returns).

It was Margaret Thatcher who said "If you have to tell people you are powerful, you're not". If Trump has to tell people he's rich, he isn't. Do you see Bill Gates having to tell people he's a successful businessman and is rich?
4976  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [FACT] End of month dumping.. on: March 17, 2016, 07:36:45 PM
17th and dumping for Altcoins is in full swing as i would have expected. (ETH for example)
Guys look at the charts for mid month for each month previously.
I have been saying this since 2013.. it's so predictable it's stupid.

Interesting, doge is down too. Is it because it is approaching Friday, or is it because bitcoin futures contracts expiry dates are approaching?
4977  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there anything non-illegal exclusive to bitcoin? on: March 17, 2016, 07:08:45 PM

How do I find the merchants? I know the whole gift card thing, but that seems like a long winded way to get something. Thanks for replying.

Have a look at the following site:

http://spendbitcoins.com/places/

Also, Overstock accepts BTC if you are doing internet shopping in the USA.
4978  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Venezuelan state tv talking crap about BTC / 2 miners got arrested for mining on: March 17, 2016, 06:54:19 PM
If you are mining in places like that you really need to keep it secret. Likewise using BTC. Don't yabber to all your friends what you are doing.

I thought Venezuela had a new govt, or at least had some new legislators - but apparently nothing has changed.
4979  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Withdrawing Bitcoin anonymously? on: March 17, 2016, 06:40:04 PM
someone already suggested cointocard.co, don't use traditional exchangers because they're not anonymous. Use that website to refill your card and you're done. The money take about 2 days to show up

What are the charges like on cointocard? Do they charge you for not using the cards for example, like some providers?

Edit: I see the fees are 1% + 7.98 USD/EUR

Following a four month pilot program, USAA members can now view the balance of their Coinbase account, alongside the rest of their USAA accounts and financial services.

The financial services group made a major investment in Coinbase, during the US$75 million Series C fundraising round in January 2015, alongside The New York Stock Exchange and BBVA Ventures.

In order for USAA customers to add their Coinbase account, they only need to go to their accounts summary page, add the account, and sign into Coinbase. From there onwards, Coinbase wallet and vault balances will show up inside of their USAA online and mobile accounts, underneath the “My Accounts Summary” page.

USAA = United Services Automobile Association
