Interesting.  Bytecoin, Boolberry and Monero all saw a little flurry of buying at around the same time today...  Any other cryptonotes see action?

Hmm, I suggest we leave out US patriotic mentality and words like "founding fathers" and "constitution". Crypto and P2P are about anarchism, questioning every kind of authority, so I'd leave out every reference to nation states.

You may not want him to print his ideals on crypto.  I understand that.  But in honesty I don't want your ideals to be the point either.  And it is not because I do not share some of them.

Cryptocurrencies will benefit crypto-anarchists, yes. This is by definition.  And there is no doubt they have the potential to interrupt the power of states.  But I have a more inclusive view of the power and use of cryptocurrencies.  And this movement is no the isolated playground of left-libertarians.

Also, to say they are about "questioning every kind of authority" is very short sighted.  The will form new authority structures themselves.  In fact this is the turn this conversation has just taken with the idea posed in the post we are talking about (the scheduled fork-dates).

My 2XRMR...

I dont know what is about Monero holders,  they alll seem to exhibit this strange sense of fanatical, zealous self-assuredness of it's undeniable superiority which just comes across a little to jehovas' witnessy to me. It's like watching a late night infomercial or reading one of these ebook self-improvement pitches..in this thread it's always laughing at the fools who dump.. (haha, nervous laughter) personally I dumped and brought back lower successfully many more times than I've been burned trying it so don't personally feel too much like a fool. Also everything is apparently an orchestrated attack against monero to keep it down.. THEY are trying and hold back this torrential waterfall that will be the monero success story.. The powers that be and the haters are pulling out every stop to contain this raging monero beast.. Yawn   Roll Eyes

there is this unrelenting undercurrent being broadcast here that yes, buying and hodling a pithy amount of this bytecoin fork will allow you to buy a private island in Belize in 2-5 years. If you buy you will become soon the new wealthy elite, gentlement.. And yes you may not be able to find a single solitary purpose to holding this "currency" aside from buying a fleet of gulfstreams and a lifetime ski resort pass as there is not yet a single scrap of merchant adoption despite a year since inception and almost half fully mined.. but don't let that stop those like americanpegasus and rpietila who have nest-eggs overflowing with monero into encouraging you to gorge yourself on as much "cheap" xmr as possible. how many times we heard that before?

with anonymity this currencies chief tenet (at this time quite a weak attraction as pretty much the only place to trade it- poloniex spectacularly  un-anonymous,  it's current sky-high inflation and many large holders concentrating wealth it doesn't seem anywhere near as groundbreaking as it's chief proponents try and insinuate.

I'm also sick of seeing this monero thread bumped to the front page of the altcoin discussion page by the same few posters. At last it's slightly more bearable than the 15 different monero threads but still almost every other altcoin sticks to the less trafficed altcoin announcement page

WRONG!  I don't ski.

It was interesting to me how the volume and volatility just evaporated during the BCT "social engineering attack".  Whatever the *%*& that was.

You have to be careful about drive feezing, because if you go too cold, or run the drive for too long at cold then the spindle bearings will be destroyed. The bearings may damage the platter surfaces if they emit any particles or gelled lubricant while running cold, which would dramatically decrease the chances of data recovery by any paid service.
His failed drive is an SSD.

Yeah... you should microwave those for a little while to fix them.

geeez! Backup folks.

His most +EV play here is simple.  Do not do ANYTHING to the drive.

1.  Buy ~$200+ in XMR (this step is optional).
2.  Put drive on shelf.

If XMR goes to the MOON then he can easily afford to recover the other drive, and he will not have done any extra damage by spinning up a damaged drive.   If XMR fails then he's out what?  A couple hundred bucks?  All the while you get to enjoy being part of the speculative family again.

Every coin I own has been removed from all exchanges, i expect this i.d crap to spread among them quickly.

I could also be wrong  Wink

I had like 97 XMR on Poloniex this AM.  I had forgotten about them.  They have been whisked off as of today. Wink  It gets easier to be a bagholder.

I would not leave funds in an exchange unless one is activley trading. AML/KNC is the least of one's concerns. Ever heard of MTGox? By the way I will be going for level 3 verification on Poloniex and did not have funds on deposit there when the changeover occured.

On another note: The most effective way to squeeze the shorts to the wall is to buy and then take delivery.  Wink

I really did forget that stash. Wink

So I have been out of the crypto world for a week or so and now all of a sudden Poloniex has sold out to the goverment.
I still would like to trade but don't wanna bother with the KYC bullshit.

Is there any alternatives you guys recommend? I have tried Bittrex but the volume is very low compared to Poloniex.

I said some days before SHTF that we should look back at Bter as alternative, I was already using Bittrex so I guess I'll be fine.

If cryptsy or other exchange could implement XMR right now it would be optimal for them (and us).

I think BTC-e would be my choice.

Shorting Monero is actually a good thing. At some point the shorts need to be closed and hopefully it has to be done at lower price than the entrance price.

My hopefully is quite different than your hopefully.  Nothing personal but I hope you lose every single BTC in your margin account. Wink

But to each their own?

I think what he's saying is that Poloniex has been a great supporter of the Monero community. By implementing their policy change with an obnoxious and customer-hostile two-day notices (where people who happen not to be online every day are not forced to give up their information or have their coins stolen) they just told the Monero community go fuck ourselves. Without even so much as an explanation other than "Hey guys, good news, you can trade on margin and pay more commissions now!"

Compliance is perfectly fine, and to be expected. Giving your biggest customer base the finger with a two-day notice is not.

And I told them that when they contacted me to try to smooth things over.

Fuck you Poloniex. You screwed up here.

You've got a point there.  Interestingly I notice Kraken has just started beta margin trading at exactly the same time.  Could these be related in some way.  Seems like such a coincedence.

Aaaaand the chart just devours another bear.  Gulp.  We are seeing heavy selling pressure and a resilient chart.  Any one else seeing what I am seeing?

I don't know why this impacted your decision to turn off your node?

Polo is a U.S. exchange, they need to comply with U.S. law. It sucks that it happened so quickly, but I'd rather there be an exchange than none at all. I believe decentralized exchanges are coming, and when they do so people will be able to trade freely and anonymously.

Poloniex changing their rules certainly makes our short term direction cloudy, but if you check, there are a lot less sells than buys.

i was just frustrated (i turned the computer completely off Roll Eyes ), the short to mid term future for monero has not been as cloudy as it is right now for a very long time. i dont know if i really belive in decentralized exchanges. Open transactions exists, yet no one really uses it. decentralized exchanges wont fill this gap for now. A quick and dirty unregulated, centralized exchange needs to pop up until then, somehow comparable to how cryptonodexchange did it, just in Tonga, Monaco, whatever Cool

Well here's the thing(s).

1.  Poloniex is not Monero and Monero is not Poloniex.  All the exchanges doing this are affecting all the assets they trade.  It's KYC/AML for Monero, NXT, DASH, ETC...  The playing field is still level.

2.  There are still ways to trade. XMR.to, Shapeshift, Coinomat.  Combine these and other services and you will find a way to retain full anonymity I think.

3.  Plus trading on Poloniex does not break the anonymity of Monero in any way!  It just changes your relationship to Poloniex.
4998  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 20, 2015, 12:32:44 PM
Looks like we could be about done pricing the KYC/AML news in.

People like to talk about weak and strong hands...  THIS is a time, if you look at the chart, when we were surely passing coins from weak to strong.  Volume went up and the price held in the long run.  It was bumpy, but buying and selling ended up washing out.  Those who bought are happy I bet.
4999  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 20, 2015, 06:36:40 AM
The advent of short selling isn't really bullish or bearish in my opinion, but it has a net positive on the market.  It create liquidity, smooths out variance,  and thereby aids in price discovery.

Therefore after a time, the market becomes harder to manipulate and the price (supposedly) more accurately will reflect the actual sentiment of the market be it positive or negative.

On the other hand, rallies fueled by a short squeeze are fun to behold.

Short positions will make or break bears.  It will give our favorite naysayers a way to put their money where their mouth is.

I am not sure that wallets that mymonero.com currently creates are safe against hacking.
Example: I tried five times to create a wallet, but in each case I got at least two out of 13 words being identical and in one case (out of 5) i got three identical words.
If it uses the dictionary and then randomizes, the chance of this happening is so miniscule as to be negligible.
In my opinion, it means that wallet creation does not work properly (at least at this moment).

My question to developers-why is this happening?

Checksum.

please explain how two words (or even three) out of 13 could be the same, hopefully with a bit more detail.

I appreciate the word please there, but I do not have the time right now to do the work to provide you with a good enough answer.
