501  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Difference Between Fiat Currency and Cyptrocurrency on: January 27, 2024, 07:53:56 AM
5.Fiat currency is a physical means of exchange for example coin, bank note etc.
Fiat doesn't take only physical form, it could also be online or take the form of CBDCs. You can decide not to use physical fiat and can still engage in financial transactions without restrictions.

6.Transaction cost of fiat currency is low.

6.Transaction cost of cyptrocurrency is high
This your point is arguable because if not for the congestion of the Bitcoin mempool by Ordinals, the transaction fees is lower than fiat.

Op, to me bitcoin is not a cryptocurrency as I see it, this posses some quality that most crypto does not have, starting from security, identity being personal and decentralization itself, that's why till tomorrow some people see altcoin and shitcoin as a scam,
Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency but it is unique this why any coin beside Bitcoin are called altcoin. Many developers have tried to introduce cryptocurrencies that will compete with Bitcoin but none of them are close to its class.

"Announcement: Today the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) becomes the first U.S. bitcoin ETF to publish the bitcoin addresses of its holdings.

Now anyone can verify BITB's holdings and flows directly on the blockchain.

Onchain transparency is core to Bitcoin's ethos. We're proud to walk the walk with BITB."

Bitwise Become First To Disclose Bitcoin ETF Holdings Address
Bitwise has shown a worthy example for other Bitcoin asset managers to follow. Publishing its wallet address is aimed at showing transparency which could boost customer confidence in the company. The stiff competition between the other ten spot Bitcoin ETF providers might have also necessitated this publicity by Bitwise. There are many big players such as BlackRock, Grayscale, etc, but investors might be attracted to asset managers that have made their wallets public. We might see other providers join Bitwise and also seek other means to gain the trust of prospective investors.
503  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The harvest (Proof urself worthy to earn). on: January 26, 2024, 01:59:54 PM
The real essence of labour is the harvest. In relation to the forum, the beginning stage is not easy as a newcomer needs to be patient. Atleast for a newcomer they should be  getting no matter how little some reward for their resources in terms of time and materials. The harvest is the benefit (merit).
The main benefit you can derive from this forum is knowledge. If you can gain a sufficient understanding of Bitcoin, you have achieved your aim of been here. The materials from this forum could help you in your financial and other endeavours. Therefore, don't measure your progress or benefit based on how much merit you get. Merit will definitely come as you make a positive contribution to the forum.

when I started discussing my activities and involvement in the forum to some people around me about it, the next question is," how much have u earned", I was absolutely discourage as I remained mute till date. I was seen as a mentor until they got to realise that no pay until time "proves u worthy".
These days people are attracted to ventures that bring quick profit. People don't give much attention to learning and are not also patient enough to develop themselves. This is why they will always ask for the financial benefit of joining a platform. This get-rich-quick mentality has also been fueled by diverse scam platforms on the internet. Joining the forum is not by force and it is important to introduce only people who have an interest in learning. You should let them know that this forum is mainly for knowledge, earning from here is a fringe benefit of patience and continuous learning.
504  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Coins.ph is expanding on: January 26, 2024, 01:13:57 PM
For me this is good news to Filipino crypto enthusiasts living and working abroad as they can now send remittances through this cryptocurrency related  innovation without any hassle.

Source: https://news.abs-cbn.com/business/01/25/24/coinsph-expanding-globally-eyes-slice-of-remittances
This a great news coming from the Philippines and also a plus to crypto users in the country. The main focus of Coins.ph should be how to secure licences from countries like the US and other super economies in Asia. This is because these nations have more Filipinos and they also earn higher salaries. But we still appreciate Coins.Ph CEO Wei Zhou and his team for helping people to send remittances to friends and families.

But lets do hope we can't see any more issue since so far many Filipino crypto users avoid to use this wallet due to some unwanted things happening due to strict requirements or regulations happening.

Also they need to increase their manpower since so far I read a lot of claims regarding on their slow support and that's bad for people waiting their issue to be resolved that's why they need to do more better job their to provide good service to their clients.
I don't live in the Philippines and don't know much about the platform. But they have to take the issue of customer support very seriously because it is important for the reputation of the firm. Many organisations are using modern technology such as artificial intelligence to support their customer service team. The strict regulation issues might be related to the laws that guide crypto services in the country.
505  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US gov’s planned $118M Bitcoin sale is ‘peanuts’ compared to GBTC on: January 26, 2024, 12:31:06 PM
So US government is going to sell 2.9k Bitcoin soon and according to Steven Lubka, managing director at Bitcoin exchange Swan Bitcoin, the sale would be “peanuts” compared to the outflows from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust over the last week.
The sale is insignificant compared to the $579 million that has been disposed of Grayscale Bitcoin ETF since the approval of the ETF. The impact of the dump by Grayscale was slightly felt with the price of Bitcoin dropping significantly. But we have seen some signs of recovery with the price moving to $41k. I doubt if the proposed sale by the US government of about 2,934 BTC ($118 million) of Silk Road Bitcoin would have much impact. Even if there is any effect, the price will still recover within a few days. Thus I totally agree with Steven Lubka that this auction is peanut and I think this news shouldn't give rise to FUD.
506  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling by financial dependents. on: January 26, 2024, 11:44:31 AM
Parents are doing the best they can but they cannot really keep up with the times, every single day a new app comes out and kids are on top of those things while their parents have to deal with all kind of other stuff, so kids and young people need to also put an effort forward to not get in trouble either, and they should know that gambling is not really for them as they do not have the money or the mental maturity to gamble responsibly, but it is precisely because they are told they should not do it they like the idea of gambling at such an early age.
Parenting is not an easy responsibility which is why anyone who is not prepared should not have a child. As a parent, you need to keep monitoring your child until he or she gets to the age of maturity. You might not be able to monitor all his activities but there is a need to check what he is exposed to on the phone and in other gadgets. There should be a means to closely check if he is exposed to unharmful behaviour and this could be achieved through spending time with the child and having constant discussions. An observant parent will be able to identify when there is a change in the behaviour of a child especially when it is related to gambling. You will be able to know this when the child starts having money issues and this will make a parent investigate what he is spending money on.

If you think these young people will put in a personal effort to control themselves, it might never happen. Many of them are not mature enough to reason and understand that some behaviour might harm them. They are usually controlled by youthful exuberance and peer pressure. Parents might not need to kill themselves because they want to protect their children but the point is that they have to put in more effort.
507  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Can a social or casual good guesser make better gambling prediction carrier? on: January 25, 2024, 03:00:09 PM
I am concerned to ask, can such a person build a gambling carrier with such an excellent guessing prohibition? Or he should trash it all and believe that gambling predictions remains a game of luck?

Gambling might include guessing when you don't have so much time to do your analysis and predict accurately. But depending solely on guessing as a gambler will bring you more losses. Gambling might depend on luck to a large extent but it also includes basic skills and experience. Your colleagues should not use his correct guesses as a yardstick that he would be successful in gambling, it was simply just his lucky day. I don't also subscribe to the assumption that gambling could be a career because it shouldn't be seen as a job that brings a steady income. Many gamblers are professionals in different areas of endeavour and use gambling as a form of entertainment.
508  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Nigeria unbans cryptocurrency on: January 25, 2024, 02:01:59 PM

It gives me joy to know that we can now transact in crypto without difficulty. Before now in Nigeria transaction in crypto has always been difficult and stressful especially using P2P.
This calls for a celebration for all crypto lovers in Nigeria.

It was never difficult buying or selling bitcoin through the P2P medium only if you keep to the rules provided by the exchange. Apart from exchange, there are other regulated platforms like telegram or WhatsApp that organized it in such away that they had escrow who received money as middle person for the transaction. So it wasn't really a difficult thing selling or buying bitcoin then and now nothing has changed if not the government have realised they were only setting themselves and youths backwards for self-centredness and political gains.
Indeed it was not difficult to exchange Bitcoin even with the restrictions placed on banks but there were still some problems. Before the restrictions were lifted the government promoted campaigns to showcase the crypto space as fraudulent and very risky. People were deceived into believing that if they put their money in crypto there was a high chance that they might be scammed. The public including law enforcement agencies began to see people that use cryptocurrencies as criminals. It was so bad that the police might arrest and interrogate you immediately they saw a crypto wallet in your phone. There was a case where an exchange operator who used a social media platform to advertise his services was tracked by the police and arrested.

The point I am making is that due to the government's negative stance on cryptocurrencies, it was now seen as illegal when it was not prohibited by the law. I share the same position with @Eldestyoung that there is a need to celebrate the lifting of the restrictions. If I am not wrong, many crypto users and service providers were happy about the change because it would open more doors of opportunity in the Nigerian crypto industry.
509  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BINANCE AS HOLDER on: January 25, 2024, 12:33:17 PM
Please guys, i didnt find any topic about it. When i was updating my profile, it has a field to add our btc adress. So, i took my deposit adress from binance and added there. But i know this is not the right thing.

So, for a totally newbie, what app, website, source code, anything. What should i do to have an address that will not be violated?
I assume that some person add a Bitcoin address to their profile to receive donations or as a form of security. Somebody who wants to maintain privacy might send you some funds without having any form of contact through the wallet in your profile. Regarding security, you might be asked to sign a message from the address you put in your profile if you have any issues with your bitcointalk account. I think using an exchange address is not advisable because you don't have total control of the wallet. Your exchange account might be frozen or access can be restricted. It will be better to use a decentralized wallet that you have full control over.
510  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Germany League - Bundesliga Prediction Thread on: January 25, 2024, 09:17:29 AM
Bayern Munich defeated their opponent 1-0 and continued to follow Leverkusen. We watched a Bayern Munich who dominated the pitch and never gave any chances to their opponents. Bjelica must have been bored with this situation, because he did everything to get Sane red carded in order to bring excitement to the match. He didn't succeed and got a red card himself. If Sane had gotten the red card here maybe things would have changed. Bayern dominated the game from the beginning to the end and definitely deserved the win.
Coach Thomas Tuchel will be pleased that Bayern Munich got the three points but he will not also be comfortable with the player's performance. Bayern is not scoring goals as they used to and it is becoming disturbing. A club that has 22 shots on target and just scored just one goal is not a good result for a team with some of the best strikers in the world. I know it was not an easy game because Union Berlin defended so well that it was difficult to penetrate but this is not the Bayern we used to know. They have been struggling to win games and the coach is not taking responsibility.

Except Bayer Leverkusen drops four points in the future, Bayern Munich might have to settle for the second position. Ball possession or match dominance is good but getting the three points is more important. So the coach shouldn't work on the attack of Bayern to ensure they maximize the chances they create.
511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitwise becomes first US spot Bitcoin ETF to disclose BTC holding addresses on: January 25, 2024, 08:26:16 AM
The aim is to show how transparent and to further maintain the trust their customers have in them. I think this sets the bar for the others to follow but I'm a little bit curious by this action of Bitwise.
https://bitcoinmagazine.com/markets/bitwise-becomes-first-u-s-spot-bitcoin-etf-to-disclose-btc-holding-addresses
Bitwise has done well by voluntarily publishing its Bitcoin address holding and they have set a pace of transparency and openness. I also hope they will disclose more of their financial operations like how many shares have been acquired this is to ensure that they have enough funds to back it up. I also see this move as a marketing strategy to attract investors to the asset management firm. Maybe other asset managers might follow to prove that they are also accountable.

Quote
Does this mean they can't still falsify records even as they've displayed their records to the public?
These centralised platforms could do anything just to prove that they are trustworthy. They could go as far as borrowing Bitcoin from other sources and transfer it to the address just to deceive investors. You will never know how dirty these companies are until they have problems. It is better to buy your coins directly and keep them in your wallet because you will never know what is happening behind the glamour more of these firms are showing.
512  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are newbies afraid to comment on threads of highly ranked members? on: January 24, 2024, 03:16:16 PM
I know this thread will seem like nonsense to many but I took a lot of courage, and now I want to know if it's just my mistake or if it happens to many freshmen. But I have seen many newbies join the threads of senior, legendary or ranked members, but I hold back for fear of lack of courage. I can't move it at all.

If this is not the case for many in new situations, and if this fear applies to me, how do I overcome it?

All your valuable suggestions will be appreciated.
OP your thread makes a lot of sense to me because I also faced the same fear. I usually check the people who have commented on a past before responding to his because I was scared of making mistakes. I was also scared of criticism since I felt that my comments might not be appropriate. But this fear didn't last for a long time because I began to build confidence.

The first thing I did was to avoid threads that I knew little or nothing about. This is to limit my probability of making mistakes. In some cases, I will read the comments of other members and do some research before commenting on a thread. The only way you can be confident in your post is when you are sure that you are contributing positively to the thread.
513  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The topic of Bitcoin's Achievement is charming on: January 24, 2024, 02:20:31 PM
Knowing about Bitcoin early is not just important to me but the ability to believe in the coin and keep hodling it for a long time. Many people were lucky to acquire Bitcoin very cheaply but they ended up losing, wasting or even selling it before it became influential. So I have so much respect for people who kept their coin to date. I was not that lucky to be part of these old-timers but in a few years, many people will also call me a lucky person because of the extent Bitcoin might go. The message that we should keep holding looks insignificant but I think this is also the same message that was been spread a long time ago but many people failed to maximize their opportunity.

I disagree that the illegal stuff has gone down, maybe in bitcoin but there's definitely more people that's using crypto for really nefarious stuff. I don't think stability will ever be a thing for bitcoin though, I still believe it's going to be volatile as ever, that's one thing I believe will never change.
Before now Bitcoin was generally perceived by the mainstream financial system as a currency that is mostly used to finance crime. But these views have gradually changed over time and we have seen Bitcoin become acceptable by the governments of some influential nations. Before now, nobody believed that the SEC would ever approve the spot Bitcoin ETF because Bitcoin was highly associated with crime. Therefore, people might still be using it for criminal activities but the perception that it is majorly used for finance crime has changed.
514  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Italian League Prediction Thread (Serie A) on: January 24, 2024, 09:26:51 AM
The next match will be the biggest test for De Rossi and he must show consistency and extend his list of wins if As Roma wants to finish in the top five of the standings. Facing Inter Milan is not easy because they are currently in their best form in Serie A so it will be a little difficult for As Roma to win the match.
Inter Milan will meet Roma on the tenth of February and not the next game. Roma's next game in the Seria A will be against Salernitana and from their five past meetings the host team have not won against Roma. They have played two draws while Roma won three matches. With the level of motivation from the last win, I think Daniele De Rossi might be able to lead the team to victory. Ending the league in the top five positions will be a big task for Roma but with dedication and fewer injuries, they might achieve it. If they can win the game against Salernitana and Cagliari they might have the opportunity of moving to sixth or fifth position. But the games against Inter will be the real test of the tactical capacity of De Rossi. A draw against Inter should be the sole target of Roma.
515  Other / Meta / Re: cls63 Merit Source Application on: January 24, 2024, 08:25:54 AM
I have seen many merit source applications and I don't think anyone has been approved by Theymos. I think he is taking his time and might want to do a bulk approval. I also desire to see more merit sources because some of the old ones might not have been active. Good luck with your application.

The question is for OP but I think he mentioned some of the answers in the original post.
1. What are your own personal reasons you see that prompted for this application.
OP said the Turkish board is lacking merit sources and he has time to act in that capacity if given the opportunity.

Quote
2. What difference are you going to make in the distribution of merits if your request is being granted.
The gambling board lacks merits flow, since he is an active gamble poster, we might start seeing the flow of merit in the gambling board if his application is approved.
516  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What You will do in this situation? on: January 23, 2024, 09:14:56 AM
If you were in this situation, what would you do? Introduce him to sports betting or let him stick to playing slots. Yesterday, I just let it go but we still often meet at other activities.
The kind of gambling games a person chooses should be based on interest. Some people might not enjoy sports bets that's why they are sticking to slots. We shouldn't also push aside that gambling is not just for profit-making but also entertainment. But it will not be bad if you introduce him to sports betting if you think he has the experience and would have some advantage. But ensure you have the time to guide him properly to make him understand sports betting this is to avoid mistakes. But do you think sports betting has more advantages than slot games?
517  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Saudi Arabia 1M BTC BUY !! on: January 23, 2024, 08:52:35 AM
There are a lot of things going around about Saudi Arabia that cannot be confirmed. I know one of the rumours are that Saudi Arabia wanted to join the BRICS countries and then suddenly decided that they did not want to join anymore.

We know the BRICS countries wants to move away from the US Dollar as a global reserve currency and they want to use their own currency.

So it will be interresting to see what side they choose.
I was also surprised when I heard that Saudi Arabia wants to join the BRICS nations since they have a very close diplomatic relationship with the US. The kingdom depends more on the US for security, so moving away from the dollars will have dire consequences. The country's minister of commerce Majid Al-Kasabi clarified that the Kingdom has been invited to attend BRICS summits which doesn't mean joining formally.

I’ve been hearing about investments from the Saudis for a few years already. It seems that every few months someone makes a tweet and then people get the word out and it spreads and people think it’s real.

Basically $500M is nothing for those countries, so it’s possible they might invest, especially after the etf has been approved. But until we get something concrete then it’s nothing but a rumor.
In almost all the news outlets that reported the news, the information was called a rumour. What makes it more unreliable is that it didn't emanate from any Saudi or Qatari government official but from Max Keiser. I wonder where he got the information since he didn't state the source of this information. But it is good news to the Bitcoin ecosystem to see rich economies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar having an interest in the currency.
518  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2023/2024 on: January 23, 2024, 08:17:57 AM
With a busy schedule and each team requiring player rotation, it means the competition is even more interesting to watch. Manchester City has a tier 2 squad that is equal in terms of play so Pep Guardiola can still overcome the busy schedule by adjusting the level of competition  between the UCL and the Premier League. the reason is that these 2 competitions are the most prioritized targets for Manchester City while Liverpool because this season is not in the UCL, might be able to take advantage of the situation a little besides having to continue hunting in the Europa League where their opponents are not comparable to  Manchester City's opponents in the UCL. For Arsenal itself, in my opinion they won't have much hope in the UCL, so Arteta wants to conquer the Premier League first at least to improve last season slipping performance.
Comparing all the teams that are competing for the English Premier League I think Manchester City stands a better chance of winning the competition. They have one of the best and most experienced coaches who have enough players to select from. I recalled last season when Arsenal began to lose momentum due to injuries and other challenges, while City who was even competing for the UCL kept pushing until they overtook the Gunners. Liverpool is another team that will win the EPL if City fails to win it.

I don't think the Europa League is less tough than the Champions League. Don't forget that some clubs that were knocked out of the UCL will be moving to the Europa League which might make the competition tougher. I also think that the Europa Cup is very important to Liverpool, so they will do their best to win the competition. Arsenal has all it takes to compete favourably in the UCL and I predict that they will overcome Porto in the round of sixteen. There is no need to underrate Arsenal in the UCL because they could just be lucky this season.
519  Economy / Economics / Re: A person that is against the creation of CBDC. on: January 23, 2024, 07:44:48 AM
I think President Trump is correct about the possible control of the government on your funds as Americans and we all know that. People anywhere in the world wants privacy and full control of their funds that is why they invested on decentralized assets rather than having something like the CBDC.
Claiming that CBDCs give the government full control over people's funds but attacking decentralised cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is hypocrisy. Donald Trump has never been a supporter of Bitcoin, so I see this comment as political to gain votes from mainly the youth. Trump will never promote decentralised platforms because every government wants to control the people's financial activities rather he would promote platforms like the FedNow Service to discourage people from using decentralised platforms.

But do you think this is a smart move of him or you still prefer the use of digital dollar?
Do you agree with him to not allow the creation of CBDC or you just don't care about this?
I know that it is non of my business but I just want to know, is there really a need to create CBDC?

I want to hear your thoughts on this as it might happen to any country in the world anytime.
Except Donald Trump states the kind of currency he prefers to CBDCs this news is none of my business. If he is saying that CBDCs are dangerous, what is his alternative? Does he prefer Bitcoin or does he have another decentralised option?
520  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buying houses with BTC on: January 23, 2024, 07:27:44 AM
I have recently watched a video where the guy says that it is safer to buy a house with BTC (and other cryptocurrencies) than buying through one real estate agent. If I remember correctly, he says that it can be proven through a NFT.

That sounds cool, but what about all the regulations and laws of the government? I mean, won't they charge their share? Won't it be possible to get a fine for using crypto instead of FIAT?

I know there are already countries that are "crypto-friendly", but it seems to be interesting to prove your house purchase through an NFT.
Buying a house with Bitcoin has been happening especially in countries that are friendly to the currency. There are countries in which Bitcoin is a legal means of payment which means that it could be used to settle debt or for financial contract agreements. Accepting Bitcoin will also depend on the seller of the property if they are willing to accept it as a means of payment.

I don't know how it is safer to buy properties with Bitcoin because property documents will contain the identity of the buyer, which means it will not promote privacy. The property will still be subjected to taxes just like others, so it will not reduce taxation. It will be better to buy property in fiat if cryptocurrency is banned in your country because it is not recognised as a form of payment. The seller can easily claim that he didn't receive any payment from you since crypto is not a currency before the law of such a country.
