Why would you suggest not mining at all?
Basically this is the wrong time to get into mining. Check back in march of next year... that will either be a better time or bitcoin will be dead. IMO bitcoin will survive the jump to ASIC... once that happens you'll be in a better position to see if it's viable for you. Chances are without a very large initial investment ($50,000 - $250,000) it will be a non-starter.

He's lucky he's not on the sex offender list.
Very True. I have a neighbor... who got prosecuted as a sex offender for taking a leak behind his tractor tire, in his field, about 150 feet from a state highway... where a trooper had pulled over a mini-van full of kids.

No such thing as a closed border. Interstate ones are so ridiculously porous that they would literally need to build a wall to keep anyone from crossing.
I'm fairly sure that if a state did try to leave, that the federal government would instantly impose all sorts of sanctions against them and probably bomb the hell out of them... The very best thing we could hope for in that scenario is the national guard on the border to keep the state contained... but that really isn't likely either. That's a second Civil War. After the fiasco the first one was, I don't know if they'd be willing to try a second one. And "bomb the hell out of"... whom? The state legislature? No need to kill anyone directly. War 101 dictates that they'd simple decimate the production capacity of the rebel state. Without any way to produce anything and no ability to grow food once the oil reserves ran out... you'd have them back into the fold in a few years tops.

Gtfo is what people in eastern European countries did after USSR fell apart. That includes my whole family. So, when you live in a country where to the north and east you have Israel that keeps invading you, to the south you have Egypt that gives zero fucks about you, and within the country there is an extremist religious Hamas government that kills you for not following their bullshit religious prohibitions, why wouldn't anyone with any brains try to get out by any means necessary? Please enlighten me so I won't be so ignorant.
You make a very good point... This same sort of thing happens throughout history. Government changes or becomes oppressive and citizens choose to leave rather than live there. The problem with palestine is that it wasn't ever a nation, the people aren't even considered refugees... and none of the muslim nations want to take over their care and feeding. Basically the only place someone from gaza could go is egypt, and only their person, no goods. Israel manages and allows the import of all types of civilian goods, food, etc... but doesn't allow industrial anything that could be used to make weapons (for obvious reasons).

gaza people are using shitty $1000 rockets to try and fight israel. they need some more serious equipment. maybe with bitcoin they could fund the development of something with a guidance system.
No, what they need to do is stop making war and become peaceful. Israel doesn't become aggressive unless provoked. Almost anyone who's ever visited the region is amazed by the restraint of the IDF... Lets try it from another direction... say that Mexicans were shooting ordinance over the border and trying to hit El Paso, Texas. Exactly how long do you think it would take the US to invade? I promise you that it would either be carpet bombing or an immediate ground war, starting just after the second launch. Gaza has constantly been the staging ground for attempts to kill citizens of Isreal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Palestinian_rocket_attacks_on_Israel,_2012Imagine any other Nation that would suffer more than 1500 launches and still allow the place they came from to exist.

The State of the union is strong and will continue to strengthen. That's why there are petitions to secede circulating in most if not all states with some garnering significant support and 50 million people aren't rioting and looting because they get free cell phones and food with the swipe of an EBT card right? Thanks firefop, I realize half the energy supplied domestically is from coal-fired generation. I was trying to make a point with my question that clean, green, renewable energy and roads filled with over-priced electric and fuel cell vehicles is absolutely not in the cards from what I can gather. Here's a list of examples why the utopian green clean-energy future for the U.S. is a propagandized pipe dream after throwing tens of billions in stimulus and tax credits at now struggling or bankrupt energy companies, some due in whole or in part to domestic regulation and trade tariffs imposed by their own government themselves. Ridiculous really. Nice link I think the thing is... we aren't incapable of doing it.. it's just that the powers that be don't really have it on the agenda at all... 'green' is just another way to sneak in silly legislation and more taxes. Cap and Trade isn't even about green, it's just another excuse to pile even more taxes on the (rapidly shrinking?) segment of the country who actually produces something of value. The saddest part about it, is I don't really think the vast majority of leftists are actually evil... they've just been 'educated' in the misapplication of logic. Secession movements worry me in general, once that starts happening - it may well become impossible to get into any of the places that leave - Maybe I should move to texas before it happens. Meanwhile, the left is trying to get a 51st state... even more chance for voter fraud.

Four years? I give it less than two.
You sir are underestimating the mainstream medias ability to brainwash the liberal/stupid/young/senile (read general) population. They'll do what they always do, blow smoke until someone they don't like is in a position to take the fall. So while anyone with a brain will know that's it's happening well before it becomes generally accepted or reports... internationally (for the most part) and domestically it won't "actually happen" until Obama is out of office.

I've been thinking the same! Since our great leaders are introducing all kinds of measures to make working less and less profitable, I have also decided to drastically reduce my efforts, maybe stop working completely. I haven't decided yet where and how to spend my time. Cow tipping sounds great and it will definitely provide more satisfaction than seeing my profits being taken by the government.
Right there with ya buddy - I'm in the process of building a straw housing development in California... Very cheap to construct... and as soon as it's finished I'll be retiring myself.

This entire thread is a bad idea... I'm not a 420 fan (got your back bro ) but he's not shady in any way... he's just an honest douche. The fact that you maintain this thread only proves that you have too much time on your hands and an over-active imagination.

How is that electricity generated though, the stuff that isn't imported? Solyndra was sure a grand slam eh? I don't believe there's many new nuke plants being built in the States is there, I know of two? I submit that electric powered vehicles, let alone hydrogen powered vehicles, will not be mainstream for decades if at all. Chevy Volt failed so spectacularly they stopped making them. One can buy two nice compact cars for what a Nissan Leaf costs, ditto for a Mitsubishi Miev. Or is Obama and JP Morgan going to give them away like cell phones and food stamps? When was the last time you saw a hydrogen fuel cell-powered car driving around? Just the infrastructure alone to service these vehicles on a national basis will take who knows how many years to build out. Talk about limited in scope. Oh and I agree LFTR sounds amazing and safe too but it's still just conceptual isn't it? Further to MoonShadows great points, here's some analysis of the issue of america's energy self-sufficiency and the IEA's projections. Lauren Lyster isn't hard to take either. Coal. Interestingly enough, I don't think anyone in power is going to attempt to make the US into a net energy producer... and coal is one of obama's targets. Don't worry over the next 4 years you'll see a real economic collapse in this county.

I really don't see the difference between having a GPU you could sell for $200 but choose not to in order to mine Litecoin/Vanity addresses, and investing $200 to purchase the same GPU for the same purpose. Either way you're giving up $200 in order to mine.
That's actually a decent point - which is why the best pro miners have sold their farms slowly over the last 3 months. Personally, I'm down to just my fpgas and the 6x 6990s on my gaming computers. I'm actually looking forward to retiring those so people can have guilt free gaming again. Asics are going to change up the game - but it will settle out in the long run... my advice is pick your price point (mine's about $10/btc) go short as soon as an asic ships or you see the difficulty going up... There will definately be a couple of crashes as people generate 2 weeks of coins in a day or 3. Then when it gets 'low enough' buy buy buy.

thanks for the help! much appreciated.what is wrong with the McCarthy source? btw its not written its a Ted talk speech (at 4min 30sec) feel free to double check maybe i misquoted? the guy seemed to have a good idea about bitcoins. also i think i might have written per minute instead of 10.
Ok I listened to it --- all he said was 21mil btc... I was ref to the beginning part of the sentence: Not per min, per 10 mins. But yes, source him for 21mil is correct. rate of about 50 bitcoins per minute until the total in circulation is 21 million bitcoins (McCarthy 4:30). So once 21 million bitcoins are on the Bitcoin network there will no longer be miners.
|
|

I will say this - I'm looking forward to being able to shut some windows in next winter... If only asics arrive before then

“Miners,” who could be anyone that owns the appropriate equipment to download create blocks of bitcoins, Bitcoins compared it's akin to how the US Department of the Treasure prints US dollars to be put into circulation. The equipment is not complicated, the components that a miner needs are a computer with Internet access and free software. Pretty much everyone can mine bitcoins, but to actually do it efficiently you need high processing speed that can be achieve by connecting as many video cards that as you can find and afford to a computer. The rate a single miner will mine bitcoins depends on their processing speed and how many the total processing speed of all miners are on the Bitcoin network, because there is a limited amount of bitcoins being created worldwide at a constant rate of about 50 bitcoins (soon to drop to 25) per ten minute until the total in circulation is will be 21 million bitcoins (McCarthy 4:30). So once 21 million bitcoins are on the Bitcoin network there will no longer be miners. miners will only be processing transactions for the optional fees paid by the users of bitcoin. As of 2am October 31 2012 there were 10,291,400 bitcoins in circulation and one bitcoin had the exchange rate of about $10.79.
FTFY... If you need anymore help with editing in general... happy to help. Also you may want to checfk that McCarthy source, it that's actually what was written then the guy doesn't understand bitcoin and you can probably find a plethora of sources contradicting him.

It's hard to know who's honest and who's not at first (few) glance(s) these days, but if this turns out to be a scam, +1 to you Goomboo; I will officially trust you more.
After getting burned by Bitcoinica (which seemed extremely legit when I played there, but then it was my first and only forex endeavor), (and seeing how much potential BTC has otherwise) I'm not betting any BTC anymore on leveraged gambling type stuff.
The fact that you can hold BTC from anywhere without any third party should not ever be understated, least of which by a scamster / fraudster.
Until you see an established 4X house start accepting bitcoin, be wary. @the OP if you want to scam people you'd be better off designing a fake forex site that has BTC pairs... and then just saying that you're opperating illegally since btc isn't fiat.. =P

What are you going to be doing that you're worried about seizures?
That being said, If you're going to be using a URL the government could always kill/redirect your dns. Of course they wouldn't have the server. Depending on the content there might be other better and safer ways to deliver it.
Best way is own your own server and use some vps to relay traffic. Then if it's taken from you, or redirected, you just have to grab a different relay and put it back up.
