Yes, swiping a card then walking out the door with your items is so primitive.

I rather pay $49.99 for Bitpay's digital wallet with a 5 hour battery life, go through various menus, wait several seconds for the QR code to scan and finalize the transaction.

Oh wait, my battery died. I guess I won't be buying anything today.

Is there a gas leak in here? I swear, you guys are thinking like a failing toy company.

Casascius Bitcoins comes to mind.

LOL. Yea, let's rip one of those off and scan in the code each time we want to "insert coin".
5023  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to Turn Bitcoin Into the Top Payment Network and the Currency of the Future on: February 21, 2012, 10:29:28 PM

Yes, let's replace cheap plastic, disposable cards with an expensive device. Let's require all the poor people out there to invest in electronics.

What's this I hear? Atlas suddenly wants to champion for the world's poor?

Face it. Electronics that enable activities that cannot be done without them are not at fault for not being able to function in a time and space that they don't in fact exist in.

Did you think Bitcoin was free or something? Have you looked around at the mining subforums lately?
5024  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Moral Culpability for Actions on: February 21, 2012, 10:26:00 PM
To those who voted "No," two further questions:

1) The group event that occurred in the scenario (let's call it a "mini-stampede," shall we?); was that event intentionally created by the child?

2) The singular incident that occurred, of the little girl being knocked down and hurt; was that incident brought about as a direct result of the mini-stampede?

How about I give the girl who skinned her knee twenty bucks and call it a day?

Why would you, if there's no moral culpability? Because others want you to?

No offense, but that seems a little out of character.

Suggesting that money solves all problems? Stressing that people who have problems can all be bought off if you're rich? Insinuating that poor people are worth less? It's pretty much perfectly in-character for Atlas.

Looks like this thread

just got sewn.

YEEAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Same problems, new faces.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=64435.0

We all know that these steps are necessary to play ball with the big boys, but the problem lies in an exit strategy. When your money isn't claimable because you don't have ID, why isn't reversing it back to who originally sent it also allowed? It's this one fine point that makes MtGox no better than Paypal. Congratulations assholes, we've come full circle.

Yep, good idea Matthew.

I also have http://bitcoinx.com/charts/ bookmarked which is a really good way to see the "top" current topics.

Nice.

It is not begging the way I see it but rather an invitation to participate in a worthwhile cause/project.

Its not like he is going to just take that money and go buy himself a bottle of cheap wine or lysol, and only share it with his back-alley buddies...

I expect we will all benefit from the project, which I can share in a little bit by contributing a small amount of coin.

Geez Matt.  The goal was to give the community a chance to pay for it and help me avoid poisoning it with ads, or "selling-out" to someone just because they have a lot of money (and thus I acquire an obligation to satisfy some suits instead of myself).   I don't want to monetize it and corrupt it, I want to provide it for free, which will have the most impact on the greater Bitcoin community.  I'm not in this to get rich, I'm in it to make an impact, and I can make maximum impact by keeping it open and pure.   This is exactly what crowdfunding is for.  Sorry I'm not a businessman like you.

Right on!  This is what got me interested in bitcoin more than anything...  an alternative to the current greedhead ways which is destroying the world.

[ insert Bill Hicks rant against marketing and weasel advertisers etc.  ]

moar coinage for the armory project!

Well that definitely is a different way to think of it. I don't mind that things can (and actually do) work with e-begging, I just think that there are structures that work better. Since I didn't get a clear response from the guy about what he has or has not planned other than crowdfunding, I couldn't comment on anything at this point. Just glad to see him working so hard and looking forward to Armory's future!

5030  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to Turn Bitcoin Into the Top Payment Network and the Currency of the Future on: February 21, 2012, 09:25:15 PM
What I mean is that people won't have to put more than say $20 on a card.
This is not convenient.  What happens when I want to spend $25? I go to my computer and transfer funds around and then have to wait for 6 confirmations?

Giving anyone your private key, even a "trusted" merchant, is incredibly foolish.  After swiping your card once, you could never trust it again.

A smart phone app that reads a QR code is the easiest and most secure so far IMO.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=58552.0 links to this video that shows how easy it can be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDOcLros-w0

Alas, this has all been discussed immensely under Atlas's other numerous account names, but he just doesn't get it. He thinks that the risk of giving away your information to a merchant is better than the security provided by a service that has the potential to screw you over.

Bottom line guys, when you have to use a service, you have to trust someone. It's money for Christ's sake.

I see.

I think goodlord's comment can be best understood when one realizes instead of meaning "I see" he meant "WTF?"

And by "WTF?" he meant "TITS OR GTFO"

Hollywood should also tell you the chance of being hit once by a trained squad of goons with guns is about 1%.

Especially if you're white, handsome, and are holding a girl's hand.

EDIT: I'm really surprised at how hard movies make it look to shoot. I have like 99.5% accuracy at long range with a pistol at the hip. It's harder NOT to hit someone when you're trying. The only thing that causes misses is nature and the jitters imo.

Or else my ex used to say "looking through the wrong thingy"

Port Armory to Javascript and I'll donate $100 in Bitcoins.
I don't think "port" is what you want.

However, there will eventually be support for a JSON-RPC.  You should be able to build whatever you want with javascript once that exists.

I don't think you'd want to move something that uses up 4GB of RAM to Javascript-- ever.
The client should only have to download the most recent blocks in the chain. This whole issue disappears once that happens.

Oh yea, good point. So then the next time you close your browser and open it ag--- ohhh wait..

 Roll Eyes

Oh, how dramatic.  The gun totting american can't carry a concealed firearm.  Darwin's natural selection is working too slow.  For self defence, how about a cross-bow, large knife or a simple shotgun tied to you hat.

Borrowing from a very useful list of advice, "you can't carry it on to the plane if it doesn't fit through the x-ray machine"

Useful post.

Crossbows, large knives, and shotguns are regulated as well.

I bet the people who happened to be so unfortunate to find themselves passengers on the 767s that flew into the twin towers would have loved to be in possession of a Glock 17.

But just think! If they would have been allowed to have that on board, why...why...oh yea they captured the plane anyway.

Huh? How many passengers on a plane? How many people hijacked the plane? I say give them all guns and re-roll the dice.

Maybe I'm nuts but I don't go places where I'm stripped of the ability to defend myself. I'll let you know how that works out for the second half of my life. So far, so good.

I hear ya. I'm not gun freak, religious freak, patriotic freak, terrorist freak or even conspiracy freak, but I sure as hell am a self-preservation freak. When I someplace that seems like the risk is high of being completely unable to defend myself, I am reminded of countless Hollywood movies trying to warn me.

5037  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: February 21, 2012, 09:07:57 PM
Is it done, yet? I forgot to forward my other magazine subscriptions and am too cheap to pay the USPS $1 "for verification purposes" to forward my mail. All I have to do while defecating is reading the ingredients of Febreeze ("fragrance," water, "deodorizer," "natural propellant" -- what a useful list) and raging against deodorant manufacturers for putting QR codes on the container. I'm going mad, man!

Haha I always do this. Just because I'm not eating it doesn't mean they shouldn't have to tell people whats in it, what the hell. They market that stuff to just spray around your house too. I eventually had to stop using them so I could Breath Happy .

We need this magazine, now all I have is a toothpaste box to look at.

Shit. When you put it that way, I might be inclined to leak another page or two.

5040  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Moral Culpability for Actions on: February 21, 2012, 08:52:59 PM
Everyone is morally responsible for what they claim is the truth.  Because of the implied danger, the others can not be expected to each evaluate the situation immediately, but should believe that the one person is doing their moral duty.

The boy who cried wolf was responsible.

And so is that goddamn wolf, always running away right when the village comes running to see, such tomfoolery is downright reprehensible!
