5041  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 20, 2013, 10:27:14 AM
I was planning for buying one but no way for that price. I think now is safe to say that competition is required for that price to drop.

Yep - absolutely. Suddenly it seems that if this price sticks, and BFL delivers, Avalon is going to lose big time.

Not AVALON, but AVALON's customers. You can bet that at +5000usd they will make a big profit for unit. I don't think they will sell them out, but they will sell at least a couple of hundreds to miners that have plenty of coins to spare. And if BFL never delivers, or delivers in September/October, those miners will still make a not-so-big profit, but a profit nevertheless.

But for someone buying the coins at the current exchange rate, is a losing bet. Even if BFL turns out to be a scam, the not-so-big profit will not justify the gamble.
5042  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 21.4Mhash/s ... is that decent? on: March 20, 2013, 10:02:44 AM
ASICS are hardware, as in hard to get and expensive, but around 300 times more efficient than your setup.

The only problem with ASICs is that they probably don't exist. But thats another story......

Yes, they exist. Dozens of forums users are already hashing with one of the AVALON ASICs.

If the OP wants to hash with something decent (67000 MHs), he has to buy an AVALON ASICs. But the price of batch #3 is +5000usd per unit, so the expected value is very likely to be negative.
5043  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: I am planning to buy Avalon batch 3..is batch 3 invitations only? on: March 20, 2013, 09:56:05 AM
At that price, given the current exchange rate, I'm seriously reconsidering my desire to buy a batch 3 miner.  I'd be more inclined to simply put the cash that I do have (and not enough to buy a batch 3) into btc and hold on.

The expected value of buying btc and holding is much higher than buying an AVALON batch #3 unit at +5.000usd.

At 1.500usd it was uncertain, but at least ROI was feasible and mining has other incentives (securing the network, etc.). But at +5000usd? NO WAY.
5044  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 20, 2013, 09:54:00 AM
yup, its called a high risk investment. High risk investments usually fail, but if they are succesfull there a shitload of money

The reward in ordering first is the lower difficulty, and thus the MUCH higher profitability.

I could accept a 50% increase on the first units... But come on... +300%?? To get a unit when the difficulty will be SO higher? Just to get a ROI in (maybe) 10 months?

I'm sure you're happy of being one of the first customers to receive one of the first batch units. Congratulations. Yo did good. But this does not mean that you have to support such a bad move from a company. Be sincere: are you going to buy batch #3 units at this price?
5045  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 20, 2013, 09:42:58 AM
+5.000usd for the same unit that was sold at 1.500usd when the difficulty was MUCH lower. It seems SO WRONG to me....
Note pre-order users paid high risks the chip will ever work or not.
Business done right.

Yeah, business done right in a ponzi-style fashion. First one to jump in takes the big cut, last ones remain holding the bag (and broken).

I thought AVALON was a serious company.
5046  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: store.avalon-asics.com - "prepping for batch #3" on: March 20, 2013, 09:41:20 AM
Except btc is now trading at $60, making the units considerably more expensive...

At 1.500usd it was quite a safe gamble. At +5.000usd the expected value is negative. Unless BFL is a complete scam, and no other player delivers a single ASICs, 90btc is a losing proposal for sure.

At that price I would only buy one if I had hundreds of btc, mined/bought when the exchange rate was much lower. Which unfortunately is not the case.
5047  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: I am planning to buy Avalon batch 3..is batch 3 invitations only? on: March 20, 2013, 09:39:10 AM
BTC88 - BTC115 !!!

Wow! Greed takes over. This is a sure shot losing proposal for anyone purchasing these.

Yeah, now it's PURE GAMBLE with negative expected value. If btc/usd skyrockets and difficulty climbs reasonably low (meaning that no other player delivers ASICs), it may be profitable in quite a long term. If difficulty climbs fast (meaning more ASICs reaching miners), btc/usd stays pretty much the same, at this price AVALON ASICs is a losing bet for sure.

Greed takes over. Pretty bad move from a consumer point of view.
5048  Local / Español (Spanish) / (OBJETIVO CONSEGUIDO) - Asociarse para AVALON ASICs (batch #3) - MADRID on: March 20, 2013, 09:36:24 AM

ID DEL PAGO A AVALON: a75ef083b95b6e83ae0469ca467dc987cbc38e5044f6d9b08245948f50b9c2a8

Looks like site is prepared for batch #3. http://store.avalon-asics.com/?product=avalon-asic-unit
When will be buying possible?

+5.000usd for the same unit that was sold at 1.500usd when the difficulty was MUCH lower. It seems SO WRONG to me....
5050  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: I am planning to buy Avalon batch 3..is batch 3 invitations only? on: March 20, 2013, 09:19:23 AM
Rather, it is not much higher, but "improved". It may be "much lower" Wink
The price will be from BTC88 to BTC115 depending on number of slots.

88 to 115 btc? If the specs are similar to the units of the first 2 batches that price is SO wrong. They have been advertising 1.500usd until a few days ago. At that price, it was a "safe" gamble. At +5.000usd, if the GHs are still 65 to 85GHs, the gamble is very risky. With both the btc price and the difficulty is skyrocketing, it's much safer to hold on your BTC, and way for a "second gen" ASICs.
5051  Economy / Service Discussion / MtGox security: Yubikey vs Google Authenticator on: March 19, 2013, 04:17:29 PM
I've been awarded with a free Yubikey at MtGox. I had already set up a Google Authenticator, and now I have a doubt:

Which solution you like better? Yubikey or GA?

I see two different pros and cons:

  • Yubikey looks more secure, as I'm sure that smartphone malware targeting Google Authenticator (among other things) is on his way
  • On the other side, Google Authenticator seems easier to backup. For MtGox specifically, you just have to print the QR code at set-up, and your set. What about Yubikey? What happens if you loose it/break the key? I will have it in my keyring... And that's a place where is getting a lot of "action" (bouncing around with coins, keys, etc.)

Opinions?

Ah, come on guys, I was just trying to annoy Rampion, and maybe trigger those huge caps. SCAAAM!

This is a SCAM

Hope I pleased you Wink
5053  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: PrimeAsic - 80 Ghash/sec Asic Miner on: March 18, 2013, 08:30:52 AM

Well, I have been procrastinating this post because I was slightly embarrassed to admit I did place a order early on in this ruse.

Someone from the Gmail "primeasic@gmail.com" account acknowledged receipt of my order, and stated I would be receiving a shipping confirmation on Monday May 11 2013.  Of course, no email was received.  A few days later I sent a inquiry and of course I did not get a response.  Nothing has been heard since.   Of course I did consider this could be a scam prior to my order, but I took a gamble.

I can confirm for all, it is a 100% complete scam.  Everyone who did the previous due diligence was correct; there are no ASIC's here.

Oh well, a fool and his precious btc were parted.  Thank you community for all your skepticism. Feel free to point and laugh at me now. Smiley

I really don't understand why to take a gamble you have 0% chances to win. It was SO clear this was a scam. We warned it on every damn page of this post.
5054  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The official Armory-for-OSX Bounty Thread [CLAIMED -- 25 BTC] on: March 13, 2013, 12:09:13 AM
FYI:

Tested on a 2,53GH Macbook Pro (mid 2009, 15 inch), 4GB RAM, which had Armory already installed through Red Emerald's instructions

Everything ran smooth and I had the same performance and "feeling" running Armory from the .app or Red Emerald's install.

Only difference: with the .app the internally built OSX Firewall asks if I want to allow Python to receive incoming traffic, like it's listening to a port. With the install made with Red Emerald's instruction, OSX Firewall never asked that.

Obviously I did not allow it to receive incoming traffic (I don't see why, it's not bitcoin-qt) and it still ran OK. Outgoing traffic as per Red Emerald's: python connected to google, bitcoinarmory.com and github.

Last but not least, I broadcasted an offline signed transaction OK.

EDITED: I see that I allowed incoming traffic for python (Red Emerald's install), I must have forgot about it. So everything is the same on that sense. Btw: why is python/armory requesting for incoming transaction? Sorry for my ignorance

And thanks again for the best bitcoin client, by fair. Loving it in Linux, btw Wink
5055  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The official Armory-for-OSX Bounty Thread [CLAIMED -- 25 BTC] on: March 12, 2013, 10:02:10 PM
Great!

I installed Armory with Red Emerald's instructions, using terminal - would you recommend switching to the new .app? And uninstalling previous version?

Thank you all for this fantastic piece of software Wink
5056  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Lightning miner ! 4ghs 80 usd Wow on: March 12, 2013, 09:40:54 PM
We posted several times warning that his was a 100% proved scam.

Who is we? How/when was this 100% proven scam.

From almost day 1, when:

- a fake company that never existed before registered a brand new website saying it replaced and old one of which there was no trace on internet
- offered a product that never existed before for which they said they had happy customers, which are obviously fake

If you doubt this is a scam there are 2 options:

a) you did not read the full thread and you did not take the time to verify the facts
b) it benefits you to spread the doubt so others who do not read the full post and do not verify the facts are scammed
5057  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Lightning miner ! 4ghs 80 usd Wow on: March 12, 2013, 09:19:17 PM
they are a total scam

I ordered they told me they would have my tracking number to me last thursday now they wont even reply to emails.

i took an 80$ gamble and lost - my own fault for being stupid but let this be a warning to you - please no one else fall for this scam

it is not real

You took a gamble with only 0.00015% possibilities of success. We posted several times warning that his was a 100% proved scam.
5058  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory scanning the whole blockchain every time i start the program on: March 12, 2013, 08:53:59 AM
In case it's helpful:

I'm running Armory on a mid 2009, Core 2 Duo 2.53 Ghz Macbook Pro, with 4GB RAM and OSX 10.8.2

installed armory compiling from source following Red Emeralds instructions on a bloated set up. Took 30/40 minutes to sync in each start and kept crashing

after a clean OS install it got better: now it takes between 10 to 20 minutes to sync, and it run flawlessly unless I open too many apps/tabs in browser, etc.

It uses Aprox. 1.6gb of RAM
5059  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox AML/KYC Process Explained on: March 11, 2013, 06:20:03 PM
Oh dear.

After this I switched to Bitstamp using my online handle name and setup Google Authenticator. I then had my phone stolen last week. They are now asking for ID to disable the Google Auth, which of course I don't have since the name I signed up with doesn't exist...

it's not a small balance and it's in dollars, not BTC.

That's just plain stupid. Why did you set up google authenticator without a paper backup? Just ALWAYS print out the code/qr code that you import into your google authenticator app. Or take a screenshot, encrypt it and back it up digitally.

Otherwise, you can't complain if you loose access forever. I mean: phones get lost and stolen a lot, don't they?

Well, eventually a consecutive strek of 20 losses will happen. And that will not only end up eating all the mini-wins previously made through martingale, but it's very likely to destroy even the biggest roll.

Martingale sucks big time... Not for Satoshidice owners, of course Wink
