Sorry for double post, but when you sell a giftcard, do you have to mail it? Or can you just give them the code on the back of the card
Most can be used online, which means you just have to scratch off the code on the back and use that and the number on the front.  Check on the website of the company the gift card is for, and if they have a place to input a gift card code during checkout, then they accept them online.

Made some adjustments, now starting to make some money!  Up 5% overnight, during the downturn from $5.00 to $4.50.  Suppose that means the bot is doing its job!
5083  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: February 14, 2012, 07:18:15 AM
We've all just seen the "take everyone's money and disappear without telling anyone" thing go down here too many times, Matthew, that's all.  When you disappeared without making note of it on bitcointalk, and no one bothered to defend you until the last minute (except Phinnaeus, who no one knew if he was joking or not), it started freaking people out.  A quick note that you were going on vaca probably would have avoided all of it.

Hindsight is 20/20. Now that Mihai has the blog on the site up, crap like this won't happen anymore I suppose.
No worries.  I think we're all glad that you're back though.

Anyway, glad to hear things are on track and almost to print!  Thinking about ordering me another...

Interesting...

I'd be curious to see the 5870 on there as well, since it's one of the more highly sought-after cards out there.
5086  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trade Gift Cards for Bitcoins? on: February 14, 2012, 01:49:53 AM
It's possible, but you'll have to give a steep discount on the gift cards to make it worth the risk.  You'll also probably have to use an escrow service.

What cards are you getting rid of?

Anyway -- there is a lot you could argue about CI, but "needs a surplus" is not one of them.

Sure it is. You can create part of that surplus by eliminating all or much of the social benefits of today, including it's bureaucracy, but that is insufficient. Any basic income that deserves the name must allow people to actually survive on it. It must be paid from revenues (taxes, oil revenue....) it cannot be paid with debts.

It's a real bad dilemma. Increased productivity and more AI may well toss us into poorhouses without basic income (http://marshallbrain.com/manna1.htm), but basic income reduces competitiveness. In the end, the future may really not need us.

Only way out I see is to keep the economy growing until we're ready. Spacesteading and Seasteading may do the trick.

First off, thanks for the interesting story - I got halfway through the first chapter before I realized it was fiction. Tongue

Back on topic - a basic income only reduces human labor by about five percent, which IMHO doesn't outweigh the benefit of a more just society, especially as robot labor grows and this penalty decreases. Maybe even when we have everything we need, greed continues to motivate the selfish.
I am curious to know where this 5 percent figure comes from.  You mean to say that if everyone had a minimum paycheck coming from the government, only 5% fewer people would be seen in the workforce?

He also offered information on posting Amazon items to a craigslist feed that is available freely on the internet.  He only wanted 1 BTC for the guide (which, again, was free on the internet posted all over the place).

Do not buy anything from TorrentMaster.  He's a blatant con man.
5089  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: List of bots? on: February 13, 2012, 05:08:23 PM
Just took about 2 hours and coded my own (very simplistic) PHP bot.  But it executes exactly the strategy I wanted...  I'll still have to work on finding something that executes the strategy I want, but with using real-time data.  I haven't a clue when it comes to websockets in PHP/Javascript, so I'm just using the regular HTTP API.

Maybe I'll pay someone to program it for me... still need to check out the vb.net project though.  If that's already coded to use websockets, then maybe I can modify it to suit my needs.

Bear in mind that MtGox's Socket API usually goes down as soon as the action starts. It's highly unreliable. So even if you make the code for the Socket API you should always use the normal API as a fallback.
Good to know.

On that note, I went from 1 BTC to 0.92 BTC overnight.  Obviously, my bot needs some adjustments!  :p  I knew of one flaw before I went to bed, but needed sleep, and didn't know if it would affect the results very much anyway.

From earlier in the thread:

*Putting my paranoid hat on*

What if this is all a big nothing, conspired by Matthew to steal all our coins?  He gets BTC from advertisers, and from people pre-ordering the magazine.  It's fairly easy to make good-looking headlines and cover pages if one knows their way around photoshop.  It could be one very elaborate scam!

*Takes paranoid hat off*

BUT, I don't believe it is.  Just something interesting to think about, especially given the history of various Bitcoin entrepreneurs.

SgtSpike is right. We could easily be a scam trying to get mailing addresses and real names of bitcoiners. And even if we're not, the security of that confidential data is extremely important is it not? Now rather than put all this on my shoulders at this moment (usually Vladimir handles our security) I will say that if you are ordering through e-Mail, your e-mail is only seen by myself, Mihai Alisie, and Google documents servers. If you are ordering through Bit-pay, it is only seen by me and Tony of Bit-pay. That should be enough but I understand if a security and anonymity conscious community requires more from me. I am absolutely all ears on this one. Any advice?

Bbit (although surely jesting) is wrong. I am not going anywhere. I enjoy trolling low standards far too much to ever leave the world of Bitcoin. I also have shared my personal, banking, address, etc information with 50+ individuals in our organization, the Digital Commerce Advancement Organization (http://dcao.org). So if I ever did something stupid, Vladimir Marchenko, Ken Armitt, Zhou Tong, Arthur Britto, Roger Ver, Stefan Thomas, Charlie Shrem, Jay Shore, Erik Vorhees, Mihai Alisie, Nuri hodges, Slush, Steven Wagner, 40+ others would not only know where I live, but they'd know exactly how to hurt me the most.
So, who are these 50+ individuals with whom Matthew has shared his personal information?  Do any of them know the current status of Matthew and the magazine?

I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet, but if this was a scam, it was certainly the most elaborate and believable scam I've seen so far.

Question:  What percentage do you take for yourself?  I mean, the CrowdFlower site pays out in USD, right?  So you get paid in USD, and pay out BTC.  I'm just curious if you pay out the equivalent BTC amount exactly, or if you take a few % off the top.

Looks like we're good for transactions of $2000 or less.
And there you have it.

Want to send large sums of money through Bitcoin while avoiding IRS tracking?  Just gather X/2000 of addresses from the receiver (where X equals total $ worth of Bitcoins sent), and use sendmany to split up the total BTC.  Wink
The IRS calls this a structured transaction and would consider it one transaction (once they figure out what you are doing - which they eventually will).
Haha, apparently I am not well-versed enough in the world of criminal enterprising then!

The method is illegal and just involved tricking amazon customer support into sending you a new kindle.
If anyone wants this guide, PM me and ill give it to you for free. This guide is free he has stolen it.

This guy is trying to blackmail me.

Mods please handle this user accordingly. Thank you.
Oh, the irony.  Someone who is ripping off other people complaining about someone trying to rip him off.   Roll Eyes  These are the sort of fellows who make the world a worse place to live.

After it's decoded it's just a normal PHP variable. In this case it looks like you'd get the balance using $dec["Wallets"]["BTC"]["Balance"]["value"]. (This is a multi-layer array. Each [] goes down a layer.)
Easy enough.  Guess I just couldn't understand the array structure with the lack of spacing/indentation.  Thank you much!

EDIT:  Just realized that it is properly spaced/indented in the HTML source when viewing the page, so that helps a ton.  Just posting that in case it helps someone else.

Thanks for the links!  Unfortunately, the second link, which is programmed in PHP, is broken.  That would have shown me the code I need to utilize the JSON dumps though.  :\  Looks like there's a VB.net bot later on in the thread though, and I know that language too, will probably give that a try.

You're right. I didn't notice it was from Megaupload. Anyway, here's something that might help you get started: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=61110.0
Thanks!  That looks like exactly the kind of base I need to get started!

I assume you're interested in MtGox: check out their API documentation.  You should be able to code through their http api interface with PHP.  The http market data is cached for like 10 seconds and websocket for real-time data looks like a few lines of JavaScript.  Throw on a SQL backend and PHP should work pretty well.  I agree for real-time stocks you would probably want something more high powered than php. I will probably try to code a simple api for gox in a few weeks.  I can let you know how it goes, but otherwise good luck finding one.
Yeah, I've been looking at that.  Having some trouble dealing with the JSON output in PHP because it's not something I'm used to...
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=63551.msg745330#new

If I can't find what I'm looking for though, I'll continue to develop my own.

Here are two:

Honestly, I don't think that writing a bitcoin bot in PHP is that bad. The latency of the exchanges is really high when compared to the performance differences between an interpreted language and C. Also, we don't see thousands of trades every second like in the forex market.

Thanks for the reply.

The code I am using also uses var_dump, so I am wondering why it doesn't output in the same manner.

Code:
<?php

function mtgox_query($path, array $req = array()) {
// API settings
$key '';
$secret '';

// generate a nonce as microtime, with as-string handling to avoid problems with 32bits systems
$mt explode(' 'microtime());
$req['nonce'] = $mt[1].substr($mt[0], 26);

// generate the POST data string
$post_data http_build_query($req'''&');

// generate the extra headers
$headers = array(
'Rest-Key: '.$key,
'Rest-Sign: '.base64_encode(hash_hmac('sha512'$post_database64_decode($secret), true)),
);

// our curl handle (initialize if required)
static $ch null;
if (is_null($ch)) {
$ch curl_init();
curl_setopt($chCURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFERtrue);
curl_setopt($chCURLOPT_USERAGENT'Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MtGox PHP client; '.php_uname('s').'; PHP/'.phpversion().')');
}
curl_setopt($chCURLOPT_URL'https://mtgox.com/api/'.$path);
curl_setopt($chCURLOPT_POSTFIELDS$post_data);
curl_setopt($chCURLOPT_HTTPHEADER$headers);

// run the query
$res curl_exec($ch);
if ($res === false) throw new Exception('Could not get reply: '.curl_error($ch));
$dec json_decode($restrue);
if (!$dec) throw new Exception('Invalid data received, please make sure connection is working and requested API exists');
return $dec;
}

// example 1: get infos about the account, plus the list of rights we have access to
var_dump(mtgox_query('0/info.php'));

// old api (get funds)
var_dump(mtgox_query('0/getFunds.php'));

// trade example
// var_dump(mtgox_query('0/buyBTC.php', array('amount' => 1, 'price' => 15)));

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what the var_dump looks like, I was just curious why it didn't show up as it does in all the examples I see.

Biggest issue is how do I access the data?  If I want to grab the wallet balance from that JSON dump, how would I go about doing so?  Once I know the syntax to working with the JSON data, I should be golden.
