Oregon man wants to be arrested for donating Bitcoin to Edward Snowden

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ore-man-seeks-arrest-donating-bitcoin-edward-snowden-article-1.2173716

Quote
An Oregon computer programmer hopes a measly donation of $0.33 in Bitcoin to Edward Snowden’s legal fees lands him in trouble with the U.S. government.

Kristopher Ives says his Bitcoin donation violates an executive order prohibiting the transfer of funds to those that threatened national security domestically and overseas, an order thar he believes specifically targets the former government contractor who leaked thousands of documents.

“I think if somebody is martyred over 33 cents, there’s a bigger problem,” Ives told the Daily News.

Wave goodbye to the Bitcoin Bowl

http://www.engadget.com/2015/04/03/bitcoin-bowl-is-dead/

Quote
Bitcoin's journey on the road to legitimacy has just taken a step backwards with the news that the Bitcoin Bowl is no more. The event was a tie-up between Bitcoin payment processor BitPay and ESPN to re-brand NCAA post-season game the St. Petersburg Bowl as the Bitcoin Bowl. According to CoinDesk, the three-year agreement between the pair was torn up by mutual consent, and no-one's saying anything beyond that. Earlier this year, CoinDesk reported that the reaction to the Bitcoin Bowl by participating retailers was lukewarm, which might have been one of the reasons behind the move. Fortune, meanwhile, believes that the dwindling value of the currency is hurting BitPay and it may not be long for this world.
5083  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin to power women movement. on: April 04, 2015, 09:48:12 PM
Bitcoin had so many possibilities, still has a few left on the horizon. But can it bring any financial power to the working women around the globe? They are responsible for half of the global remittance. So how can they be profited from this virtual currency?

Women are responsible for half of global remittance and men for other half? No surprise here.

Agree with 1Referee. Bitcoin can benefit all those who rely on remittance, I don't see how is gender relevant here.

5084  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The technology behind Bitcoin is not important on: April 04, 2015, 09:30:04 PM

Right. I mean how many people know how the engine of their car works? Most of them don't know and will never get it. But they know how to drive it and what is the benefit to it instead of riding a horse.

But everyone needs at least a little bit of knowledge. You don't need to know how the engine works, but you know that there is a thing called 'engine', that it requires a fuel, some maintenance etc.

No one will switch from riding a horse to driving a car without the very basic idea of how the car works.

Same with Bitcoin. Without explaining the concept of decentralisation and P2P network, most would still imagine that Bitcoin is some sort of company that sells 'currency' backed by nothing to the naive.

I would just say "it's a new currency with no banks involved, the money is stored on your phone". Lotta people hate banks.

Sure, good explanation (not quite correct, since wallet on your phone doesn't really contain any currency). But majority would struggle to comprehend that you don't need any bank or other entity to issue and control the currency.

5086  Economy / Gambling / Re: Pocket Rockets Casino 2nd Anniversary promo: Win a PS4, HD TV, nVidia Shield! on: April 04, 2015, 03:25:28 PM
Nice promo Smiley lost 0.1 already on blackjack for a chance to get that "top of the range, large HD TV" lol.

I'm down 0.27 on roulette. Martingale with a high base bet wasn't that good idea. All out of my 'play fund' for now.

42 tickets total earned so far. I better win something  Wink
5087  Economy / Gambling / Re: Pocket Rockets Casino 2nd Anniversary promo: Win a PS4, HD TV, nVidia Shield! on: April 03, 2015, 01:38:48 PM
I definitely gonna check out Pocket Rockets Casino to win some of those great prizes ;o

If you have lots of bitcoins sure you can win. this contest can be won by the high rollers only, 0.1 btc bet for one raffle that's a lot i can't wager that  much. Undecided

That's not much at all. You can possibly do it even with small deposit. You don't have to bet BTC0.1 on a single bet.

And note that 1 player can only win once. Including consolation prizes (BTC0.05) there will be 15 winners (5 for each game) so chances are pretty high even with small number of tickests.

Avatar advertising.

Yes or no?

No.

Unless you get to choose whether you want to participate in signature or avatar campaign. One member with both will just look ridiculous. That's simply too much.

Some threads are already overwhelmed with paid ads, let's keep healthy ads/content proportions.

Edit:

So also the avatars "can be" disabled.

Yup, both can be disabled. And more people will be using those option if we overdose with ads.
5089  Economy / Gambling / Re: Pocket Rockets Casino 2nd Anniversary promo: Win a PS4, HD TV, nVidia Shield! on: April 02, 2015, 09:50:52 PM
Nice one Dean!

I'll give you some action tomorrow.

Just for the record:
Quote
Only 1 prize per account. If an account already wins a prize they will be excluded from any other draws.

That means that if player wins in dice raffle, he will be excluded from BJ and Roulette raffles? I hope so.

5090  Local / Polski / Re: Strony "rozdające" BTC za przepisanie capcha lub obejrzenie reklamy on: April 02, 2015, 09:45:01 PM
Wyglada na to ze ten watek stal sie glownym jesli chodzi o wszystkie promocje/darmowe BTC itp, to dorzuce to info:

Pocket Rockets Casino 2nd Anniversary Celebration

In just over 2 hours Pocket Rockets Casino turns 2 years old! To celebrate we are having another promo and giving away some great prizes.

Up for grabs is a Playstation 4 with GTA V, an HD TV and a brand new nVidia Shield gaming tablet.

From 3rd April 12 am BST to 17th April 12 am BST for every 0.1 Bitcoin  you wager you will get a raffle ticket.

There are three different raffle draws. One for Dice, one for Blackjack and one for Roulette. Each raffle has a different prize.

The prize in the dice raffle is an nVidia Shield gaming tablet.

The prize for the Blackjack raffle is a top of the range, large HD TV.

Finally for the Roulette raffle the winner will receive a brand new Playstation 4 with Grand Theft Auto 5.

For more information visit https://pocketrocketscasino.eu/promo

Come celebrate with us now Smiley

Thanks

There will also be 4 runner up prizes in each draw of 0.05 Bitcoin

- Dice: nVidia Shield gaming tablet + 4x BTC0.05
- Blackjack:top of the range, large HD TV + 4x BTC0.05
- Roulette:Playstation 4 & GTA5 + 4x BTC0.05

Czyli lacznie az 15 nagrod (1 gracz moze wygrac tylko raz), wiec szanse calkiem spore.
5091  Economy / Gambling / Re: New Blackjack @PocketRocketsCasino.eu - Roulette, Dice, Lottery, Max win 204BTC! on: April 02, 2015, 09:28:47 PM
...
The consolation prizes sounds like a good idea. I'll put final details up before the promo starts on Friday.

What about this? ^

If you don't want to add consolation prizes that's fine - no pressure. But if you do want to add them, then it's best to announce that at beginning of the promo period.

You could do it at the end of the promo (as a surprise) and it would be a nice gesture, but that'd be too late to get the desired effect (attracting more participants).

5092  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: today's msn money article on: April 02, 2015, 09:13:44 PM
...I think that these words are on point here: "How do you know the cryptocurrency's value is really there? What happens if something goes wrong? Can it be sold or redeemed?" "The value of these cryptocurrencies is only as good as what backs them." Mathematics is not enough.

Let me try this the other way around:

How do you know the gold's value is really there?

Yes, the gold is backed by gold, but its value is not guaranteed. Only small % of the value is due to demand for gold because of its unique properties (and this can change pretty quickly if new technology is developed). Rest of the value is created by belief that gold is 'valuable'.
5093  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin ATM problem on: April 02, 2015, 08:10:36 PM
It appears I should have received a string of about 34 characters, not 16. I'll assume that if the screen hadn't timed out before I finished writing the characters down and hit the * key it would have given me a second screen with the additional information. It's a problem with the ATM if it doesn't have controls built in to ensure a transaction is successfully completed.

Unfortunately, the store with the machine closed shortly before I went back. I'll go back tomorrow to talk to the store owner.

16 characters seem way too short, although there's such thing as 'mini' private key. From bitcoin wiki:

Quote
Mini private key format

Some applications use the mini private key format. Not every private key or Bitcoin address has a corresponding mini private key - they have to be generated a certain way in order to ensure a mini private key exists for an address. The mini private key is used for applications where space is critical, such as in QR codes and in physical bitcoins. The above example has a mini key, which is:
SzavMBLoXU6kDrqtUVmffv

The example shows 22 characters. But maybe it's worth to look for bitcoin wallet/service that supports mini keys and see whether this works.

*Yawn*

Anthem Vault plans to launch a gold-backed crypto-coin in May. The bet is that the coin—which is redeemable for 1 gram of gold at the market price—will be a big hit with investors who are tired of bitcoin's wild ways.

Only until the backing entity hits financial difficulties (doesn't generate enough profit, some exceptional losses, hacking, insufficient network etc), which statistically is very likely. And when that happens bitcoin will look like a poster-boy for stability compared to their new crypto.

Also, it's not really that revolutionary. You can already use bitreserve.org, transact with BTC for convenience whenever needed but keep your holdings in either BTC/USD/Gold/Silver+other metals, whichever you feel is best.
5095  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Something big for Bitcoin coming April 15th on: April 02, 2015, 06:55:49 PM
Yes, it seem he s just trolling.

He's legendary member and looking at his posts, he doesn't seem much of a troll.

Maybe he had some non-public info, maybe he was/is working on some big project, or maybe he was just drunk-posting.

I bet nothing gonna happen on 15th, it never does. Hope he's alright tho.
5096  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Poll- Would you live in a country where their official currency is Bitcoin? on: April 02, 2015, 01:18:45 PM
Being pro-bitcoin I voted 'Never'.

I don't like idea of BTC being enforced on anyone. I prefer it as currency of choice, so anyone is free to join in (or not).
5097  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Something big for Bitcoin coming April 15th on: April 02, 2015, 01:08:46 PM
14 days to gooooo

What adds to mystery is that OP (Elwar) disappeared after starting this thread. He was very active on the forum before that. I wonder what happened to him...

I got a private message from the bot about being paid, but there's no deposit on bit-x... Need some help here.

You need to wait for the confirmation maybe?
5100  Economy / Gambling / Re: SafeDice.com ★ Bitcoin Dice ★ Low 0.5% Edge ★ Referral ★ Fast Cashout ★ Fair on: April 01, 2015, 10:15:58 PM
Deposit some btc and have yet not got it after over 2hour

Have you got at least 1 confirmation on your transaction? If so, try refreshing the site.

I have 7 confirmations and refreshed many times.

Looks like site is frozen. Rolls don't work, so probably deposits are also not refreshed.

It will all get sorted when admin gets on it. It's not a first time that happens.

I see your name in 'high bets' tab, no wonder you're annoyed if you deposited to win that back...
