5101  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can connect to ElectrumX Server with desktop, but not phone on: October 28, 2019, 11:35:38 AM
It looks to be connecting though. 50002 is a personal port ssl is somewhere like 253 I think (probably for backwards compatibility with 8 bit systems).
5102  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: October 28, 2019, 09:09:00 AM
It's a symptom of ddos. I just tried it and it seemed to work though on clearnet (I'll take a go at tor and see if it still works).

Tor worked too.
5103  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can connect to ElectrumX Server with desktop, but not phone on: October 28, 2019, 12:15:17 AM
Yeah I can't connect to it either. Have you tried the version on your phone without the one on your computer running? Maybe it's load issue.

I think this answers the question... but there's a difference between patents and copyright.

Patenting is protecting an idea and copyrighting is protecting the acutal body of code.

If this agreement that they agreed to when they downloaded the software then they are still bound by it, particularly

So depending on how much was copied then the license still applied (if thye took a part of the software, such as the hashing algorithm or signature algorithm) they'd have no conflicts with this software (potentially) but may be bound by the copyright of any software/references that are in that part of the code...

Blockchains must have had a theoretical foundation a while ago and hashcash wasn't released with any patent, if this was patented then a filing may be put in place for infringement of anothers' intellectual property.
5105  Other / Meta / Re: Can FunCAPTCHA be used instead of ReCAPTCHA at BitcoinTalk? on: October 25, 2019, 05:06:41 PM
Is there no way to make people mine monero for 5 minutes when they log in instead? I'd pick that over everythiing else, even just as an option (funds can be added to donations for the forum). Assume people have a 5GHz clock speed...
5106  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Crypto Capital President Arrested For Money Laundering Operation on: October 25, 2019, 04:59:34 PM
This could be another message for people who were keep accusing crypto currencies mainly used for money laundering purpose, even if the do then sooner or later they will get caught like what happened in OP.

I have to disagree there, most people don't know what they're talking about on this front. I've had people say "bitcoin is good for money laundering because of that guy from silk road that got arrested" which clearly it isn't good for laundering if you get caught...

For sure they are already aware on what to do next.It was a mistake though for sure in next time it wont happen.Talking about that $350 Million
Yeah hopefully, but it's not the first time bitfinex have lost crypto due to poor dilligence. First one I know of was this one. This was when I stopped using them...

i doubt those amounts wont be credited.

Is the double negative intentional?
5107  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Installation error on: October 25, 2019, 02:32:40 PM
Yeah sorry it might be pip3 instead of pip for some versions of Linux that haven't changed their environmental variables yet. Try that.
5108  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Installation error on: October 25, 2019, 01:55:24 PM
sudo python3 -m pip install dns

It's asking you to do that, you may as well try it and report back if it doesn't work (if you haven't already) it's been a while since I installed electrum on Linux so I'm not sure exactly.
5109  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Crypto Capital President Arrested For Money Laundering Operation on: October 25, 2019, 02:16:01 AM
Or at least bitfinex can learn from its mistakes and not entrust funds to any one entity... Why wouldn't they multisig those funds with a few other parties.

It'll be interesting to see if they get that 350 million credited back to them though.
5110  Other / Meta / Would anyone find it useful if I converted some topics to audio? on: October 24, 2019, 11:36:00 PM
As Theymos pointed out from the art contest, we spend a lot of time reading and writing on here. This is good for most of the boards but for things like reading a list of the rules or looking at new changes Theymos implements, it might be nicer to have them read through rather than having to read them yourself.

If you all already have text to speech software then this may well be a useless task but I'm just wondering what people thing.

jet cash did a thread a while ago where I said I'd make something (a parody of some sort) and I got reminded of this with the 10 most noticeable threads competition so I may make something of them anyway - try to autotune my phone )
5111  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How can you detect a risky transaction before a single confirmation? on: October 24, 2019, 09:02:31 PM
~snip

Yeah I was trying to remember a derivation path at the same time oops...

I won't try it on any services offering that I was going to try it on one of my own addresses or someone I know just it see...

Somehow everybody missed the part where I was telling about 3rd party custody wallets. Like Xapo, or exchanges...

Good luck double spending from there.

I did. But all it takes is a bit of social engineering to try to get them to contact an engineer to push through a double spend... Or even someone in the inside could try doing something with some of the exchanges hot wallet. While it's unlikely you have to assess each exchange and see how likely that would be to happen and then difficulty is added. Also if you decide to delist an exchange from your service people are going to be greatly peeved that they used to get a confirmation quickly and now have to wait 20 minutes.

It's probably worth op doing some field research and buying some stuff from different sites to see how it works. If you sell goods but don't have fast delivery then some services accept an unconfirmed tx and then wait for confirmations before dispatching, similar to what a lot of gambling sites do as stated above.
5112  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How can you detect a risky transaction before a single confirmation? on: October 23, 2019, 10:18:50 PM
Yeah, you can. Some big sites like bustabit.com do this. Actually I originally authored the code, and it has been very successful. To all the people who think it's not possible, make a deposit on bustabit and try defraud the system. I'll wait  Grin

~snip~

Also keep in mind that it's perfectly possible to do now. HOWEVER tomorrow it might not be possible. If a small mining pool decided to (privately) accept double spends, you'd be irreparably screwed. So make sure your business model doesn't depend on "pre-crediting" or you could find yourself out of business overnight. (But it's a super cool nice-to-have to make an experience better).

Yeah opting out of bip143 really does add a difficulty. I might have to run a retest on double spending non rbf transactions to see how far I can stretch it by devoting some hashing power to it last time I was just using two nodes to double spend rbf txs and didn't put much effort into not spending the non rbf tx...

Accepting just one confirmation is still pretty risky in some cases (when the fees are higher) especially since a new tx with a higher fee can push the one crediting you down further. This is negated if you have something running cpfp though (as I've seen a few sites do).

5113  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How can you detect a risky transaction before a single confirmation? on: October 23, 2019, 04:50:28 PM
No. I was testing with this a while ago. Even if the fee is high they can still go higher and it'll become more favourable.

Accepting inputs at 1 sat per byte can also cause some risks but not as big.

Reducing risk, you can wait for no confirmations if rbf is disabled and fee is fairly high (but they could still push it through a pool with a higher fee so you're still taking a risk)...

Until the 6th confirmation, holding bitcoin is a bit like holding cash in a store... After you have the first tx and its confirmed or it isn't rbfable then you shouldn't have funds stolen (unless they control a lot of hash power or know someone who does) if you're a large store/site, you don't have to care so much about tiny transactions and can care more about the big ones which I think is how those gambling sites go (they'll still want 6 confs at some point - normally before withdraw).
5114  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How do I recover lost BTC by claiming the Multiply BTC Bonus? on: October 23, 2019, 06:40:03 AM

If it turns out not possible, you can bet with high amount using low-risk setting (50-70% chance) to reach the wagering requirement with minimal losses.

Yeah depending on how much you have (if its more than 1000 Satoshi you can do 100 sat bets at 1.01 multiplier (the lowest) to try to recover it though you could try contacting them first... Perhaps take this as a lesson to fully understand the terms.
5115  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Help - No idea if my transaction is valid on: October 23, 2019, 12:57:55 AM
I posted here before and then realised if you click bifcryptexs link you'll see it was a piece of copy paste maleware the address was related to (hence the large number of inputs)...

But if it was sent to an exchange (or meant to be) you could always open up a ticket with them, it won't hurt to ask.
5116  Economy / Lending / Re: Work Bike Broken looking for 0.08 to replace on: October 22, 2019, 11:27:53 PM
Believe it or not people still buy things with bitcoin.
And I would I pull out a deal here = might be you running me over next time

Random strangers don't have glowing consciences imo (it's rare a newbie pays back, if your case is legit then I'm sorry you have to bear what they've caused).

Is it a company you work for surely they should get you a new bike? You're probably better off going to the bank, they'll charge nicer interest rates too.
5117  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [OCT 2019] Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: October 22, 2019, 04:50:39 PM
Please, tell me if I accidentally put into consolidation list those inputs which may be pertaining to the "dust attack", could that threaten  my privacy?

Yes? If you consolidate small inputs you don't recognise then they couldve been sent to you as a dust attack.

Most wallets will let you pick which inputs you want to consolidate with coin control features (and those that don't may have a way of exporting seeds and keys to electrum of bitcoin core for example if you're confident doing it).

If you have enough dust you might want to donate it to someone who doesn't care about dust attacks or just send the funds to another key you own on a separate wallet and leave them there as there's no reason why you shouldn't use them if they're worth using (you could store it for when you want to buy something with it for example if you got like 0.0001-0.001 from dust attacks - I don't know whether there's a chance they can get multiple addresses from the same wallet).
5118  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Generate bitcoin address other base58 on: October 21, 2019, 12:07:40 PM
So your address and private key are now in base 23?

Loyce meant editing it so that it doesn't return anything that aren't the characters you want. For starters as validation to see if you're on the right track, the private key should start with a 5.
5119  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie welcome video on: October 20, 2019, 10:45:09 PM
You did great job, your video is very informative. But as other said, it's too long. I know it's difficult to cover everything in 5 mins, but it's reality of current generation - many people now simply can't keep their attention on subject for long time, especially when they see some static views of forum without much action - it may look boring for them.

Especially if it's monetised I prefer a 10-15 minute video it's probably the size of the videos I watch.

Also, I'm disapointed smart tvs with rakotu (or whatever it's called) os don't have a speed up option in youtube (as a person who likes to watch things at 2x ir's really missed)...

I have an idea for another video that covers some posting pitfalls, unfortunately it's sort of opinion based. I think that would be a nice one to cover rules more in depth. My hope though is that people will still go to the threads and read through them.

If you get a basic idea of some points I'd be happy to see if I can add any more to them or discuss the ones you have if you want a second opinion (I normally use telegram to discuss things with people on here but I haven't configured a username)...

Great video! It really makes me feel that I haven't done enough to make the newbie experience welcoming enough...

The users were my issue as a newbie so maybe it is a good idea to offer some information to them and try to build the experience. Although most of us are "guests" here for a few months before we actually bother to join up. It was at my point of discovering linux so I was very much enthusiastic towards both, maybe other people miss that though if they're not here for the fundamentals.

The timestamp idea was a good one too @steamtyme I see a lot of epople doing that and it's pretty helpful if you could get especially the rules and welcome message linked.
5120  Other / Meta / Re: unable to understand the stats on: October 20, 2019, 10:34:25 PM
I think it was because the forum's servers were going really slowly at the time, there were a few ddosses (as hugeblack said) and many new registrants for the new bull run...

It's probably a similar time that the page of all members also went (which was unnecessarily resource intensive).
