5121  Other / Meta / Re: Can a mod help me with something? (banned user) on: June 16, 2012, 07:04:37 PM
He was warned several times about it and he was banned once for 7 days, but he continued spamming. 23% of all posts he's made have been deleted. I probably won't unban him.
5122  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Satoshi client auto update on: June 16, 2012, 05:22:54 PM
I don't like it. Having many different versions on the network prevents mistaken new rules (fee rules, anti-DoS rules, etc.) from doing a lot of damage. For example, there was a bug in the anti-DoS rules in the past which prevented nodes from uploading the full chain to anyone, but this didn't cause a lot of damage to the network because there were a lot of people using older versions without this bug. An auto-update dialog would increase adoption of new versions a lot.

Also, it's better for security to use the oldest version that's still safe and usable. New code hasn't been tested as much.

Locking doesn't prevent you from expressing your thoughts. Just create a new thread.
5124  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Huge increase in satoshidice spam over the past day on: June 14, 2012, 08:57:32 AM
Why do you think so ?

Looking at your statistics, it seems that it's not you. Sorry.

Some big miner is creating blocks near 500 kB without increasing fees.
5125  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you take drugs; or buy them on silk road? Or sell them for that matter? on: June 14, 2012, 08:45:45 AM
I've never tried any illegal drugs. I consume alcohol, tobacco, and caffiene only a few times per year. I only occasionally drink anything but water.

(I believe that all drugs should be completely legalized, however.)
5126  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Huge increase in satoshidice spam over the past day on: June 14, 2012, 02:12:33 AM
It seems that Deepbit doesn't dynamically increase tx fees like the Satoshi client does. The Satoshi client would keep blocks at around 250 kB.

5128  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 38 on: June 14, 2012, 01:22:48 AM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Efficacy stats:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=54182.0

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 19:00:00 on June 20, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

OK, I removed it.
5130  Economy / Services / Re: SMF modification needed -- upgrade password hash security -- 40 BTC on: June 13, 2012, 01:02:32 AM
has the candidate for this been chosen yet theymos?

No.

Do you want a direct file edit or a modification format that the package manager can use? I'm comfortable with both; however, the latter could be a no-go for you for obvious security reasons.

Either is fine. I was thinking a non-modification patch, since that seems much easier to write.
5131  Other / Meta / Re: coinurl.com replaced with annoyance.php on: June 13, 2012, 12:56:32 AM
CoinURL was the only blocked service because it was the only one that was annoying me. I'll block others as I see them. AdFly is now blocked.

cur.lv is alias for coinurl.com and it is impossible to prevent users from posting links like http://coinurl.com/ml6

It's certainly not impossible. Just look at the HTTP "Host" header and deny redirection requests when someone is using coinurl.com. I do this on Bitcoin Block Explorer to prevent search engines from indexing aliases:
http://blockexplorer.com/robots.txt
http://173.208.219.162/robots.txt

The wordfilter can be easily bypassed in many ways, which is why annoyance.php says, "If you attempt to bypass the wordfilter, your account will be banned." If the possibility of using coinurl.com instead of cur.lv was just a quirk, I would treat it as another way of bypassing the restriction and not wordfilter it. But (I believe) your service used to use only coinurl.com redirection links, so someone might try using one of these links without seeing the warning on annoyance.php.
5132  Other / Meta / Re: coinurl.com replaced with annoyance.php on: June 12, 2012, 06:46:05 PM
cur.lv is an alias of coinurl.com. This works: http://coinurl.com/ml6
5133  Other / Meta / Re: PHPSESSID showing in URL field on: June 10, 2012, 05:59:57 PM
Also, might it not get transferred in the referrer?

Most browsers don't send referrers for HTTPS sites.

The IP logs show that Gabriellz9 is the same as Riddleman. They both use 88.159.122.55.

Copied the post to the newbies section.

From this info, you should see that the post-based rankings are fairly easy to get and should not be relied on when considering someone's trustworthiness.
5137  Other / Meta / Re: Ranks on: June 09, 2012, 09:27:56 PM
Nice table! There's also:
Brand new - 0 posts -
Founder - For Satoshi - (platinum coins)

There used to be a "Whitelisted" main group with two coins, but membership in this group is always hidden nowadays.

Added gift cards to the list.
5139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BlockExplorer.com and BlockChain.info out of sync? on: June 07, 2012, 10:02:11 PM
That is, are they running off different IPs, and one is randomly shown when querying blockexplorer.com?

It used to be set up that way, but my personal BBE instance is too slow to handle any significant percentage of the traffic nowadays.
5140  Economy / Services / Re: SMF modification needed -- upgrade password hash security -- 40 BTC on: June 07, 2012, 08:24:42 PM
If you're creating salts, you may want to use a CSPRNG.  So, you want /dev/random instead of urandom.

/dev/urandom is more than sufficient. It's not very important for the salt to be unpredictable.
