5141  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BlockExplorer.com and BlockChain.info out of sync? on: June 07, 2012, 08:16:12 PM
"Some reason" is probably satoshidice and their many tiny transactions.

I don't think so. My other BBE instance has a database size of 22 GB, while the main site's database with the exact same data is ~90 GB. I think it's something fixable. Right now I'm vacuuming the database to see if that helps. If that doesn't work, I'll ask the people on #postgresql if they know how to fix it. If not, I'll reset the database.
5142  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BlockExplorer.com and BlockChain.info out of sync? on: June 07, 2012, 08:04:59 PM
I'm trying to fix it now. My PostgreSQL database's size on disk quadrupled for some reason, almost filling the disk and causing problems.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 22:00:00 on June 13, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

Bitcointalk?

SMF uses SHA-1 hashes salted with the username. Not the greatest, though better than LinkedIn. (I'm trying to improve our password security.)

I looked at it through some welding glass. Venus is small, but fairly easily visible. Pretty cool.
5147  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should I vote for Walker in the imminent Wisconsin election? on: June 05, 2012, 06:35:23 PM
I voted for Walker.

I never really considered voting for Barrett. For me, it was a choice between Walker and not voting at all. I just wanted to bring up the possibility that Barrett might be better for me personally even though he's a terrible candidate overall.

You are a student? How old are you, if you don't mind answering?

I'll be 21 on the 15th.
5148  Other / Meta / Re: Odd firewall behavior on: June 05, 2012, 01:24:35 AM
If it's port 433, I would guess that your side ends the connection due to a timeout or something but we end up sending more data. This seems pretty likely to me.

If it's port 53, it might be caused by the reverse DNS lookups that we do. I think this could only happen with rare DNS configurations, though.

Maybe there are some cases where the forum would try to send email to your IP on port 25.

The server should never connect out to port 22.

Is it port 22?
5150  Other / Politics & Society / Should I vote for Walker in the imminent Wisconsin election? on: June 04, 2012, 01:43:02 AM
There is an election here in Wisconsin on Tuesday for the governorship. The candidates are Scott Walker and Tom Barrett. Normally I would just ignore it all since thinking about it is very unlikely to help me in any way. This time, though, everyone is really excited about the election and people are demanding that I vote, so I feel that it's necessary to either choose a candidate or decide that voting would be incorrect.

First of all, I tend to think that voting in a government election is somewhat immoral. Roughly half of the voters in the election will not get the governor they want, but will be forced to accept the resulting government regardless. Voting is attempting to violently force (indirectly) a group to accept a government that they don't want. Maybe this ethical problem is minor enough to ignore, though. I would have almost certainly voted for Ron Paul if he had won the Republican presidential nomination.

As far as I know, Walker's policies are most correct. He has decreased the size of state government, improved gun rights, and he doesn't seem to be doing anything anti-freedom. However, since I am a student without much USD income (and I will remain a student for several years), I might personally gain more with Barrett as governor.

What are your thoughts?
5151  Economy / Services / SMF modification needed -- upgrade password hash security -- 40 BTC on: June 03, 2012, 06:01:26 AM
The forum will pay 40 BTC for a patch to SMF version 1.1.16 upgrading password hash security.

You should use these PHP functions I've written for doing the actual hashing:

Code:
//salted SHA-256 with 7500 rounds
define('CRYPT_PARAMS', '$5$rounds=7500$');

//get $bytes bytes of secure random binary data
function urandom($bytes)
{
$file = fopen('/dev/urandom', 'rb');
$result = fread($file, $bytes);
fclose($file);
if(strlen($result) < $bytes)
die('urandom byte length mismatch');
return $result;
}

//hash and salt a new password for insertion into the database
function newpass($pass)
{
return crypt($pass, CRYPT_PARAMS . base64_encode(urandom(12)) . '$');
}

//compare a provided password with the hash in the database
function password_is_valid($entered_password, $db_hash)
{
return crypt($entered_password, $db_hash) === $db_hash;
}

//old password comparison:
//sha1(strtolower($user) . $entered_password) == $db_hash
//new password comparison:
//password_is_valid($entered_password, $db_hash)

You need to do this:
- In LogInOut.php, upgrade SMF SHA-1 hashes to these new hashes automatically. Also, update any passwords that pass password_is_valid() but have a different CRYPT_PARAMS prefix than is being used currently.
- Change all old password comparisons to the new method.
- Wherever passwords are updated, use newpass() instead of SMF's method.
- Thoroughly test all aspects of this modification. I am mostly paying someone to do this change instead of doing it myself because bugs in this would create a huge mess and I therefore want someone more experienced in software testing to do it.

Hint: SMF has a "salt" column in the database and a "passwordSalt" variable, but these aren't actually used for password hashing. You only need to deal with the "passwd" column/variable.

PM me or post here if you're interested. I will pick the best candidate in a week or two. You should only apply if you're already pretty well-trusted in the community.

(Do not post in this thread about how you prefer another hashing method.)

I will keep the one at 3 and the two at 2.5 and place one at 4 btc Smiley

This is confusing and reduces the total amount of your bid... Probably I will ban this kind of thing in future rounds.

Suggestion. As a compromise between contributing and writing 'sub', write one word about how you feel about the thread. Interested, concerned, afraid, excited, happy, rockhard, flaccid, etc.

I'd prefer just "sub", actually. These posts are easier to ignore.

I could swear that donators are able to change the display name themselves under Account Related Settings

They can.

you still have to log in with the old one.

I actually can change your login name as well, though I usually avoid doing this because it requires a password reset.
