Pretty lame to advertise your coin of interest this way.. The best use for bitcoins to me is to be able to do fast international bank transfers without paying a lot of fees.

My wallet doesn't synchronize anymore. It's stuck at 5436 blocks remaining. I've updated my smartcoin.conf and tried restarting smartcoin.exe several times.

With that budget you won't be able to make any money mining BTC. It might be better to just buy (and sell) BTC at an exchange.
