who in this community has the technical skills to help me build a forum ontop of the nxt blockchain? preferably someone who isnt enormously busy with another useful project. ill pay.

I don't really like the idea. This way posts would only be updated roughly every 60 seconds and also the blockchain would get stuffed.

we could use magnet links to torrents and posts could be done in batches. the 60 second thing would be a problem. mostly im just looking at it as a simpler proof of concept for what would need to be developed for a true decentralized marketplace.

I think you fail to see (this time Wink) why a forum is used: to discuss and socialise, nót to show off what you can do technically.

I can see where you are coming from, and it would be great if this was here nów, but it isn't.

It is a means to an end at the moment, the end being: having a place to discuss with a better structure than this thread.

Once we can do that decentrally, great. For now, I'd like you to consider to also discuss over there, as it will really, really help! Smiley

522  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 22, 2014, 05:46:57 PM

I fear that whatever forum will be up, there will always people that are not happy. nextcoin is run by a business on the top level (dgex), while nxtcrypto have no admin. So make your idea based on this.

True. This forum is not aimed to be the *only* forum, but a way to solve the problem of 1) having important discussions being buried in this mega-thread and 2) to have a place where hopefully everyone can come together and talk.

There is no need to leave nextcoin.org or any other place people enjoy and it is not meant as such. Smiley
523  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 22, 2014, 05:44:02 PM
Nxt is in dared need of a 100% trust forum. Im wondering how long it will take until we get one. I believe community fund should fund a forum to get thing structure a bit. It good to be decentralized, but not desorganized.

I'm setting one up now and if opticalcarrier agrees it can be the new forums.nxtcrypto.org:

http://107.170.117.237
Why do we need another forum exactly?  Huh

http://www.nextcoin.org is very popular and http://forums.nxtcrypto.org is also fine.

And if we get new forum, could we please use a Next Generation design?  Wink Something like this https://ripple.com/forum (sorry for using Ripple as example).

Nxtcrypto is practically defunct because there is no admin, so we can't change it anymore. opticalcarrier is managing as well as he can over there.
nextcoin has a good community, I agree. There is no reason why it should not be there Smiley

This forum will, in time be the new nxtcrypto. opticalcarrier will point it at the same subdomain.
Of course, people will first need time to migrate.

It's not meant to replace nextcoin.org, it's meant as a place to replace this thread and make discussion easier.

It would be nice to have a forum where the *whole* community can come together. Smiley

Edit: the forum will also have multiple admins, so there is inbuilt redundancy!

ANNOUNCEMENT

The new Nxt forum can be found here, people: http://107.170.117.237/index.php

Just so you don't miss it!

what happened to the old one?

nxtcrypto lost it's admin.
Wesley set this one up to have a SMF forum where we all can post and leave this crawling thread behind. Smiley

Edit: have a look. It'll feel familiar and will make discussions much more organised and easy Smiley

Twitter kind of had the same problem with usernames, and everything is fine.Even some big companies had to add a number or letter to their brand name, because it was already taken, or buy it for not a lot of money,as it isnt such a big problem. Then the name that appears on your profile can be repeated, and people is used to going to the official website or googling to verify which account is the official one of who they want to follow. They follow it,and never see fake ones again.

This is a use case that basically clinches it for me.
Thanks for being a beacon of common sense. Smiley

Ricky, you are a thoughtful guy so I presume this isn't just a personality clash? You shouldn't go, you have been an anchor for a long time. If Nxt doesn't look like it is going to turn out like you expected, don't walk away completely. Drop your stake if you want but say "what the hell, I've come this far. Let it ride". You might be surprised by unknowable events that happen in the future and I've never known a Sheriff desert his post  Wink

Let's not panic and read what he writes Smiley
He isn't going away, he is just being who he is and that means "integrity". He feels he can't do his job right in this way where treasurer and disburser are at odds. Smiley

This place needs some hugs.

And a bear.

Re-posting my Public Service Announcement:
(... because I haven't posted it in almost 500 pages of posts here...)

If you are new to Nxt and don't want to read through 2420 pages of posts, come to the wiki, parts of which are now available in nineteen languages:
- Learn about Nxt
- Get started
- get basic questions answered in the FAQ and common problems pages
- Learn how to set up a public node on a VPS
- read up on the Nxt high-level API, which you can use to build apps, games, clients, utilities, and more
- find additional resources for programmers, including suggested methods for integrating Nxt with your sites, API documentation, software change logs, a PHP library, and more.
- check out the current draft version of the Nxt whitepaper, which is being built and refined by top community contributors (it's still rough, but there's lots of great content already)

There are also great forums with lots of info and support for beginners. Many of the best Nxt wiki articles are based on information originally contributed here:
- The nxtcrypto.org forum
- The nextcoin.org forum

... and don't forget our Nxt sites (and these are just the English ones):

Wiki contributors help to pull information from these threads every day to keep the wiki up to date. You can help too!! contribute, or translate.

I've missed these!
Welcome back! Smiley

Please send some test coins to 13351022221574887413.

I would like to experiment with the asset exchange. thank you!

Received! Thank you!

So following up on my earlier post, what NXT forum has the most traffic these days?

After quick glance it looks like nextcoin.org. Is that right?

Yes, but the problem there is conflict of interest as it is owned by a business.
Other exchanges can not post there freely as they would be posting on a competitors forum.

We're working on a solution already Smiley
Give it a few days  Cheesy

Just answering this: I haven't summarised because it was simply impossible without creating a bias in my posting, and I won't do that.
There are not as many "updates" and "releases" these days, and I didn't want to do just one link posts.

I have also been busy with many projects and committees, so just couldn't Smiley

I don't want to come across as criticizing you. You do your summaries out of the goodness of your heart, and you don't owe us anything. I can't imagine how much of your time it took to do them, so thank you for everything you do!

I didn't think for one moment you were criticising Smiley
I just felt I needed to explain. At least: I wanted to explain, that may be more to the point.

The idea of the summaries and my site is and still is to show how much is being done.
At the moment we are going through quite a stressful period, and I want to point out that:

a) it's not surprising and actually normal
b) there is a lot happening behind the scenes that doesn't make sense to show until things are finished (for instance lots of work on the AE)
c) We're slowly becoming more organised Smiley

534  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 20, 2014, 09:17:43 PM
I would like to do some testing on the asset exchange. Would I do that here?

Is that demo client currently only operating on the testnet? I do not want to experiment with real NXT, only worthless testnet coins.

So if I post my account number from that client, am I automatically operating on testnet? I don't see any mention of it on the client's page.

Use this  http://nxtra.org/nxt-client/ and post your new account no here!
Don't use your current account!

We will send you TestNxt and you can test Smiley

Hi everyone! I was really excited about NXT a few weeks ago, then was afk for a week and came back to the scene. Everything has changed so much, and Damelon's summaries are no longer being published regularly. I've fallen behind and have no idea what's happening anymore. Discussion REALLY needs to move to dedicated NXT forums somewhere. Apparently, the nxtcrypto.org admin is MIA. How are the forums at nextcoin.org as far as traffic goes?

Just answering this: I haven't summarised because it was simply impossible without creating a bias in my posting, and I won't do that.

Tonight I started with posting the first article on the work of the committees, because that does what I made the blog for: reporting about progress!

There is still a lot happening and being developed, but this week was much more "introspective". That is also good and probably natural. We are maturing, and that comes with "teething problems"  Grin

I've done many projects in my career, and this is not that strange, but it ís energetic, I must say!  Cheesy

Once there is more to summarise that doesn't force me to take sides, I will of course Smiley
536  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 20, 2014, 04:57:53 PM
ok ok...are you now talking about those phasers to kill badass aliens or about the "java code" thing??
Ah! Good old C-f-B loves to mix jokes with important issues Roll Eyes

It's about Java code. Phaser splits processing of transactions into phases. Sorry, I'm not a native English speaking person, so I just added "er" to "phase". Smiley

I, for one am glad we have both Captain Picard ánd phasers now.

As long as we keep the Klingons off the starboard bow.

(cue Trekkie flipping out because I am mixing references from two different series Wink)

Okay, now I will honor my previous words and stop commenting about it. Let's agree to disagree.
It's a moo-point anyway, because indeed people do what they will do...

I don't even disagree.
I'm just very, very practical Wink
539  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 20, 2014, 12:27:53 PM
What I ment by "diluting the NXT POS scheme", is that you're using POW to directly buy NXT. It's against on of the POS principles (don't waste energy).
And as long as there will be crapcoins (they will keep popping up for as long as people can make a quick buck on them) people will keep mining them.

Getting a bigger audience by letting go one of the POS principles?
I think I'm in one of my philosophical fases or whatever, but it feels like dumping toxic waste somewhere to grow yourself a clean business.  Wink

I won't go on about this. Just letting you know how I think about it  Kiss

Rule one of the internet: people will do what they do.

Nxt is open. The *system* may be PoS. That doesn't mean people will be limited by it.
The only way to counteract that is to centrally limit it.

This is one of those "take the good with the bad" situations.

The only thing Nxt developers can do is not actively promote it by writing the code for it themselves.
That is where a mission statement that rickyjames was talking about comes in handy.

It means no core coding would be allocated to facilitating it out of the community. But that's as far as it would go Smiley
540  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 20, 2014, 11:13:40 AM
Can someone who has the know-how explain the in-and-out's of this "NXT mining" and if it's really a big deal?

I'm seeing news all over the place and suggestions that it's quite a "boost to NXT".

Overhyped marketing again or something more?

It has nothing to do with Nxt itself. You join the pool that mine other altcoins, dump them on exchanges in return for nxt. All this is done automatically (bots) without much user input.

I am sure the volume is really small, but it keeps the "buy" side ticking on exchanges.

It's a way to siphon the "value" of other coins into Nxt.

Basically a pool that pays out in Nxt instead of BTC. Smiley
