521  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: best coinjoin wallets on: December 15, 2023, 09:21:50 PM
I just saw this topic.

Personally I use exactly what Charles-Tim suggested above:

1. Whirlpool coinjoins, from Sparrow which has this feature enabled (if you want) for hot wallets. For details check Nathan's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIHoNaQdzP0&ab_channel=theBTCcourse
2. Jam, which is actually a UI for JoinMarket. Very easy to use. For details check Ben's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbyjG2upGO8&ab_channel=BTCSessions

Technically, I could send coins from sinbad campaign , right? Even if in the past those coins came from their address.

You could and you should, in my opinion! As I said in another thread, I would mix my UTXOs from this campaign (I wasn't part of it, but hypothetically) and send them to a wallet specifically created for this purpose. I wouldn't wanna mix these inputs with other inputs I have.

I know you specifically mention CoinJoins, but if you wanna go a little further (I think you do, since you mentioned exchanges) you can read here: https://kycnot.me/search?type=exchange and find more tools to ensure your privacy. One tool I use a lot is UnstoppableSwap which allows me to basically swap between Bitcoin and Monero in a fully self-custodial way. Technically you could get rid of these UTXOs you own switching to monero and then follow the same steps in reverse to get fresh Bitcoin back.

P.S in case you choose Whirlpool coinjoins, make sure to remember that it creates change UTXOs in an account that it calls "Badbank". Treat these UTXOs carefully.

I am on Cretan shores for a while and it does not feel good to drink alone Smiley

In fact, you can not drink alone when in Creta.

Sorry for bumping older posts, but I just realised it wasn't that old, just 2 months old  Tongue (And as I said, I have read all the posts 3 times already lol)
523  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Should i change my BTC Wallet Address ? on: December 15, 2023, 06:41:41 PM
So if i wanted to use my balance on that address, i would need to mix it with a mixer so that my connection with Si#D$$ is lost ?

Or with coinjoins. You could use whirlpool for example.

To be honest, personally I would:
1. create a wallet specifically for this mixing service's payments.
2. start doing whirlpool coinjoins and let them go to the wallet created on step (1).
3. avoid sending any other transactions to this wallet (any of the addresses of this wallet).
4. if you need to send out of this wallet, just do it from the fresh coinjoined UTXOs.

In my opinion, you will be able to use the UTXOs anyway in the future. However, if everything has gone wrong and all the miners decide to reject these inputs, you want to have them as separate UTXOs. Don't mix them with other ones you may have.
524  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Secure Seed and Passphrase/PIN on: December 15, 2023, 01:31:04 PM
A private key in Bitcoin is 128 bits, no matter how many words you choose to use as a seed phrase. This is because Bitcoin uses Secp256k1.

In fact, every measure you take (24 words instead of 12, multisig, passphrase etc) only help in case the seed phrase backup is exposed. No matter what measure you take, the private key in Bitcoin will offer 128 bits of security.

The best explanation you can find is here (conversation with o_e_l_e_o): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5393030.msg63258028#msg63258028

525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Set up Bitcoin node for data analysis on: December 15, 2023, 11:30:16 AM
Besides contributing to the network, I would like to gain access to the data stored on the blockchain to conduct different types of analyses. I want to set up my wallet on the node as well.

May I ask what exactly do you want to do? For personal reasons?

-Should I aim for 16GB RAM or already go for 32GB RAM?
-Is a 4TB SSD sufficient or should I also look for a harddrive with more storage space, given that Ordinals increase the pace of data growth on the Bitcoin blockchain?
-What other hardware is crucial for my purpose? I am happy about any any additional feedback on that.

Prefferably aim for:
8GB RAM
2TB SSD

Anything higher than that is good but not necessary / mandatory.

Using multisig wallet as an extra layer of security is not necessary and may only make things more complicated.

Just keep in mind that this security only helps in case one backup is lost or stolen. In general, the level of security that bitcoin provides is 128 bits. This Is infeasible to be violated, but what we do here, is we add another security layer on top of that in case any backup is lost.

I will guide you to my post here where I explain how many bits of security OP's suggestion adds, compared to my suggestion.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5477341.msg63312153#msg63312153

Just notice that using multisig essentially adds another 128 bits of security on top of the initial ones. It is similar to using a strong passphrase (128 bits +) security wise.

I just woke up....... Feeling worse again, that makes it 11.5 weeks and counting. Every time I think I'm getting a bit better, I feel more ill again. So I'll continue my time on the couch now, before I switch to my time in bed.

Man I hope you are alright. 11.5 weeks is 3 months. It's too much... I wish you fast recovery. Although the word fast has kind of lost its meaning. Anyway...

Wait, what?  Did I miss something or are you busting apogio's cubes?  I've been unconscious for the past 20 hours and am still groggy from the coma-like sleep.

Hey buddy, what does that mean? "Busting my cubes"?  Tongue

Oh btw, as I said multiple times, I don't really care who the merit sources are, but I wanted to know the definition.

And to be honest, I think it's unethical to ask for merits. I am doing well, slowly accummulating merits on my own and trying to hide my mischiefs during the process.

530  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [BitcoinTalk Node Tutorial #3] Sparrow terminal / infinite Whirlpool mixes on: December 12, 2023, 05:08:27 PM
Hi all!

I have made this post before I decided to create my series of tutorials for my BitcoinTalk node.

However it is a great candidate for my 3rd tutorial, so I changed the title and I linked it with my previous tutorials.
531  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally Bitcoin Devolpers planning to kill Ordinals and Inscription on: December 12, 2023, 03:03:53 PM

However, there is something unique with Bitcoin. Everyone is able to "not comply with the rules" running whatever they want. Then the only thing they need to do is to convince other users to use the same set of rules.

Personal Opinion:
I am personally in favour of not dropping ordinals now, but if the majority chooses to reject ordinals, I will have to obey to this. I will still be able to run a version that allows ordinals, but in fact it won't matter because the majority will reject them.
Finally, I hate ordinals, but it is not safe to run specific code to reject them, because it will also impact other features that I (and perhaps many other users) need.
532  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Vs Monero - Privacy as the world becomes more dystopian on: December 12, 2023, 01:53:05 PM
We have similar feelings.  Knowing Bitcoin, starting to use Monero in parallel for the first time is harder than it sounds.  It is not as easy as 1 2 3 for sure.  If you use Dogecoin it is one thing but using Monero is different.  Particularly because Monero is for PRIVACY, so more care is necessary if you want to keep it that way.  Wallet is different, Transactions look different et cetera.

I hope some day some body smart enough will drop some ELI 5 type of Monero Documentation.  Answering all What, How and Why questions.  There are definitely a lot of things I misunderstand about Monero even if I have been using it for a very long time already.

Luckily the documentation here is good and easy to read.

But yeah Monero is superior to Doge (which I still dislike). In fact I don't like anything other than Bitcoin and Monero. The way I see it is totally privacy-centered. I want to achieve the highest privacy possible and Monero is a great asset in this regard.
533  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Guide] Ways to improve your seed phrase backup process. on: December 12, 2023, 01:36:44 PM
The whole post is really big and many won't go through the full post at all. Also, reading makes it hard to understand. So here's a picture I created to explain in as a simple visual learning thing. I have created this maybe that's why it's not that much complicated to me. But some may find this difficult.

It's not only complicated, but it is also not safe.

Let's say you have this wordlist:

Quote
glance merge actual news proof album civilian letter praise fee short responsibility concept stereotype national bad produce flush razor cutting forestry mechanism abuse duty hollow visual spy year plant offender history owl

Let's also say that the attacker doesn't know anything about your system (group of words, random words in between etc), but they immediately understand all those words belong to the BIP39 wordlist.

So the natural thing to do would be to extract all the 12 wordlists from this list and try to see if they form a seed phrase.

How many ways are there to choose 12 wordlists from the list above? The order matters here, so the Permutations are 32!/(32-12)! = 1.08 * 10^17 =~ 56 bits of entropy.

56 bits of entropy is definetely less than the >100 bits of entropy that you can create with a strong passphrase.

If you want to make this method safe-ish you need to create a list of >250 words = 4.55 * 10 ^ 28 =~ 95 bits of entropy. So, creating a piece of paper with 250 words written upon it, seems somewhat difficult, doesn't it? And even then, the "complicated" aspect that many people mention still remains.

In fact, just imagine that if you have all the 2048 words in front of you, then this offers you ~132 bits of security if you wanted to brute force exactly 1 seed phrase of 12 words from scratch. So, finally, writting 32 words, or 50 on a piece of paper, doesn't provide any security.

There's no need to end a line with a semi colon. That's only needed to separate commands on the same line.

Sure, it's just a habit from programming in Java  Tongue

In case there is no "Downloads" directory yet:
Code:
mkdir -p ~/Downloads/Core
cd ~/Downloads/Core

Good catch. Adding it now.

But another thing that you might still be mistaken about is the profile picture you are wearing. No one will penalise you for it but I don't think it's entirely right.

Don't you know it's for the merit-circling club? The image is actually for the merit sources if I am correct, not those who only have the sMerits and who have the grace of sending it to others. Since you already know the difference between sMerits and Merit sources themselves, I believe you should conclude now if you are still willing to wear the image or not.

Thanks, but everything is under control:

537  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sending your BTC what to pay. on: December 12, 2023, 07:40:49 AM
We went from "merchants running a node" to "both merchants and the clients running a node each".  That is simply difficult to uphold, even in theory.

Setting up LND / CLN is not difficult thanks to DIY options like Umbrel, Start9, Mynode etc. I reckon it requires minimal effort to set it up.
Doing it from scratch though is difficult indeed. I am trying to set CLN to work on my custom node but no luck so far. (I don't have too much time to try anyway).

Ok so we have a similar point of view. If you want to be private you have to run your own node (bitcoin & lightning). Correct? With that said, can you come up with an abstract idea of what a solution would be like? I mean for a proper decentralised network to work, every user of the network needs to run their own computer, both the merchant and the buyer. I think we are limited to that. But, as always, people can "trust" other peoples' nodes to do the job.

Nah, I set up Electrum Server and since then everything has been solid.

Yeah as we said above everything is easier with Electrum Server. Congrats man. So case solved ?

I would like to mention two topics I have created.
It's an effort to create a set of tutorials for anyone willing to create a custom node.

They are trusted and approved members ofbthe forum that are saddled with the responsibility of distributing merits to every quality post they received, these are sendable merits, here is their list

Thank you!

It's in Russian, but you shouldn't have difficulties to understand the data in the tables.

Thanks mate, yeah I will only look at the tables. However, to be honest, I didn't really wanna know who the merit sources are, but rather who is called a merit source. Anyway, thanks for the info.
