5201  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is bitcoin democratic? on: May 17, 2012, 07:31:18 PM
I don't see what isn't democratic about the Bitcoin network, you acquire the support of majority hashing power and the minority has the choice to just follow or start their own network. That is well, democracy in such a clear way that I couldn't even think of a better example of real democracy.

A majority of miners can't change the network rules. If every miner chose to increase the block reward from 50 BTC to 100 BTC, they would all just be ignored by everyone else. Your client applies the fixed rules of the network no matter what other people do.

Quote from: gmaxwell
Your bitcoin is secured in a way that is physically impossible for others to access, no matter for what reason, no matter how good the excuse, no matter a majority of miners, no matter what.

This one by the joint:

Do you like being stupid?

(Pretty much in response to the first one I listed.) Just pointless namecalling.

This is off-topic. I deleted it.

I don't have a problem with hostility as long as it comes with some real ideas.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Efficacy stats:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=54182.0

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 22:00:00 on May 23, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

Why Gavin did not use 0xBE38D3A8 key for signing the post? Did I got wrong key in my chain?

The key Gavin used is signed by 0xBE38D3A8. It's his code-signing key.
5209  Other / Meta / Re: Eliminating the one-line "subscribe" posts. on: May 15, 2012, 03:45:43 PM
Theymos, OTOH, to quote Blazr, "It should only take a few minutes to make "notified" threads appear in "Show new replies to your posts""

He's welcome to write the code, then.

You also need to be able to remove topics from unreadreplies for it to be usable as a watchlist.

Do the developers all agree for the sake of decentralization to keep this a priority, enforced with a block size limit?

No. IIRC Mike Hearn supports moving most nodes to SPV. My impression was that Satoshi also expected most nodes to use SPV. Not sure about the opinions of other developers besides gmaxwell.
5211  Other / Meta / Re: Eliminating the one-line "subscribe" posts. on: May 15, 2012, 03:23:05 PM
Those are annoying. I've looked into creating a "watchlist" feature in SMF, but it seems very difficult (which is probably why there are no modifications that do that already).

I've noticed that BitcoinTorrentz accepts them.
5213  Other / Meta / Re: Where to post local events and meetings? on: May 14, 2012, 06:35:47 PM
"Bitcoin Discussion" would probably be best. "Local -> Other" might also be appropriate, but no one reads that section.

I don't see too many of those. I'll create a section for them if more are posted.

Second the view that it should be clearer on the signup page though... Mine was somehow in Russian??

The registration page has intro text in both Russian and English. They say more-or-less the same thing.
5217  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Legality of IPOing securities on GLBSE on: May 13, 2012, 04:19:35 AM
I would like to provide a counter example - did you know that Neopets.com has a stock exchange?  (neopets.com was at one stage in the top five internet sites - no idea where it is now)  I had some interesting discussions with my daughter about portfolio tracking, day trading and risk when she was playing with it.  Yes, you can invest real money because people can sell neopoints.  Issuing securities to children (minors) in an unregulated exchange is far worse than GLBSE (that's mock horror by the way)

The Neopets stock exchange is nothing like a real stock exchange. The stocks are for fictional companies, and the prices fluctuate randomly according to certain probabilities per stock, without regard for actual supply and demand. It's just gambling.

IIRC Neopets has had some legal trouble involving anti-gambling laws, but it's against their ToS to buy/sell neopoints, so I guess it's legal.
5218  Other / Meta / Re: You have exceeded the limit of 10 personal messages per hour. on: May 12, 2012, 11:30:25 PM
Isn't that how many messages you can store in your inbox?

Yes.

That page won't change until the forum software is upgraded.
