5241  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can someone explain these weird TXs ? on: May 08, 2012, 07:43:18 AM
I hijack the thread to signal other two strange transactions, these ones in testnet:

362bbbf21f6d0b47ee2e45f975b4c2bd81ed49ba371cbd618835e91b00a66006
8a59d89496b8c0eef5ad7c3ed4b966a7e696fba0f0592cfa3736384e7a4a68b7

The problem with them is the version number: the former has 971503818 and the latter has 369576415.

Why these TXs have been accepted in the chain?

Is this a bug corrected since then (they appear in a block mined 2011-11-12) or must we expect to have random numbers in the version field?

Bitcoin doesn't check tx and block version numbers. Sometimes (probably most of the time), this is the desired behavior. It allows some backward-compatible changes to be made. For example, IMO this would have been a better way to flag a transaction as using the P2SH feature.

Sipa had a nice proposal for splitting the version number into a "major" part which causes the block/tx to be immediately rejected when the version is unknown, and a "minor" part which does not. I don't know the current status of that proposal.
5242  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin FBI Report April 2012 on: May 08, 2012, 07:17:12 AM
Smiley My Bitcoin Block Explorer was mentioned in an FBI report! Awesome!

I thought it was a pretty accurate and reasonable report. Not too anti-Bitcoin. Seems plausible that it's real.

I used to use Centregold to get LR via credit card. I haven't needed any LR in the past year or two, though, since Bitcoin is now useful enough to replace it.

I've also used ecardone successfully. (Nanotube and I combined our orders to save on wire transfer fees.)

Yes, I don't care about links, but embedded NSFW sucks if I browse at work. I had reported that first one, but nothing had happened on it until now.

I removed the embedded image after someone reported it -- maybe you. Embedded NSFW images are definitely not allowed. NSFW links are OK if they are clearly marked as such.

Can you list some topics that would go there?
5248  Economy / Lending / Re: Bitcoin Savings and Trust is probably a Ponzi Scheme: A Petition on: May 06, 2012, 10:16:03 AM
The insurance is a gimmick. Buying X bonds with 25% insurance at Y BTC each is equivalent to buying 0.75X uninsured bonds at (4Y/3 - 32/75) BTC each. This means that, all else being equal, buying X PPT bonds at more than 1.07 BTC each is dominated by investing 0.75X BTC in pirate at the same MPR.

The bonds in general are good for people who can't invest in Pirate at all, or too little to enjoy the higher interest rates; but assuming everyone is rational, the insurance shuffles some numbers around but it ultimately has no effect on who should buy them and what they gain for it.

Ah, interesting. I was just intuitively thinking that a lower-risk asset would be more desirable when I want lower risk, despite the lower return.
5249  Economy / Lending / Re: Bitcoin Savings and Trust is probably a Ponzi Scheme: A Petition on: May 06, 2012, 09:03:58 AM
This looks exactly like a HYIP to me; I'd be pretty surprised if it turns out to be legitimate. I have purchased some PPT bonds, though. With the extra insurance, the odds of winning seems reasonable.
5250  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Does my Bitcoin-Qt client accept incoming connections? on: May 06, 2012, 07:42:00 AM
You're probably not accepting connections if you have 8 peers. That's the number of outgoing connections that Bitcoin makes.

There are online tools (like this one) you can use to see if your port 8333 is open.
5251  Other / Meta / Re: Secure/Non-Secure Mixed Content Pop Ups (IE8) on: May 06, 2012, 04:07:12 AM
I think I fixed that particular issue. There is other mixed content here, though. Your browser shouldn't complain too loudly about it, since it's not a security threat.
5252  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All-time transaction record was just hit on: May 04, 2012, 03:34:47 AM
but tell them what you told me in the pm.  its important for them to know that the tx's per block can be increased as was planned for by Satoshi.

Yeah, the 1MB max block size is an arbitrary limit meant to stop the chain size from expanding too quickly. The technical limit is much higher (probably at least a million transactions). Satoshi planned to increase the max block size when legitimate transaction volume made it necessary. This requires everyone to upgrade, but it can be rolled out over several years, so it's not a huge issue. Probably some other chain-forking change will be necessary before it becomes a problem.

The current average transaction count per block is ~60, so we're far from the limit.
5253  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All-time transaction record was just hit on: May 04, 2012, 03:22:48 AM
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction_fees says it's 500KB per block. May be out of date.

500KB is the soft limit, which can be increased easily. 1MB is the "hard" limit, which is more difficult to increase.
5254  Other / Meta / Re: Dump of posts on: May 03, 2012, 02:11:57 AM
Weird how every site lists it at like 96.7MB but RapidShare says "101.42 MB" and then I start the download and it's only 96.7MB!

Rapidshare is using decimal prefixes and everyone else is using binary prefixes.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 02:00:00 on May 9, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

if you're downloading multi file torrents, there should be the ability to browse the folder already.

Yeah, but you still get charged for the files that you don't need.
