derp, I'll go change it

I already fixed it for you by uploading it to bitcointalk.org.
5262  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New bitcoin.org Clients page on: April 30, 2012, 10:47:37 PM
FWIW, here is a picture of my original suggestion, that should IMO still be open for voting on:

I like this the best. It's similar to Wikipedia "Comparison of x" articles, which is a format people are already familiar with. It'd need some explanatory text at the top and ideally info about every feature, though.
5263  Other / Off-topic / Re: Hunting Atlas on: April 30, 2012, 12:41:52 AM
Funny how he completely abandoned those accounts after getting busted.

They were banned.
5264  Other / Off-topic / Re: Ghetto Seasteading on: April 29, 2012, 07:21:49 AM
I don't think $1200 is the actual bid price:
Quote
SEALED BID OPENING DATE AND TIME:  MAY 24, 2012 AT 2:00 PM ----- PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR AN ON LINE AUCTION  ---- THIS IS A SEALED BID AUCTION

I'd be worried about the whole thing collapsing and then being liable for cleanup costs.
5265  Other / Meta / Re: Unjust scammer tag on: April 29, 2012, 02:50:24 AM
It's been proven that bulanula was overpaid, so he's ethically obligated to return the extra BTC (minus a few percent for the inconvenience, perhaps).

I admit that "scammer" might not be the most accurate term, but creating a new tag would be inconvenient and "scammer" is close enough.
5266  Other / Meta / Re: Chrome malware warning on: April 29, 2012, 02:02:18 AM
I like this, although I suspect that the people using dynamic avatars from Bitminter et al won't. I wonder if it is possible to "whitelist" those. Also, I doubt the resizer will handle gifs, will it? Not that I care lol.

I'll see how many people complain. Those dynamic images seem unnecessary, though I guess whitelisting could be done if absolutely necessary.

Animated GIFs do not retain their animation when resized. I think you can still upload them if they're already correctly-sized.
5267  Other / Meta / Re: Chrome malware warning on: April 29, 2012, 01:52:21 AM
I changed it so avatars given as URLs are downloaded, resized, and hosted by the forum. This will only apply to future avatars.
5268  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: ~ PAYING 8% MONTHLY INTEREST ON DEPOSITS ~ on: April 27, 2012, 11:54:12 PM
Mod note: this account has been compromised. Do not send BTC to any recently-posted addresses.

Thanks for the heads up.

Hi OgNasty,
Please change my repayment address to "1AMFex7h8b8TBD5WewZdHTqSQjMG8fiSsF", I restored my wallet from backup and lost some new receiving addresses. I will acknowledge this change in your thread for public record. Thanks.

chunglam

It's possible that his account was not compromised, so please don't send to his old address either.
5269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Researchers claim quantum breakthrough on: April 27, 2012, 05:48:47 AM
Isn't it possible to just up the encryption strength in future versions?  Wasn't the bitcoin protocol written at a high enough level that all it would take is a software update to move from 256 bit or whatever to 1024 bit?

Changing the crypto isn't backward-compatible, so everyone would have to upgrade. I don't think this would be too difficult, though.

Bitcoin's 256-bit ECDSA keys are really strong (equivalent to 3072-bit RSA keys in strength), and SHA-256 is still secure with quantum computers, so I don't see it being a problem in the near future. NIST and ECRYPT II say that Bitcoin's crypto is good until at least 2030.
5270  Other / Off-topic / Re: TOR users be aware, Flash and Javascript reveals IP address. on: April 25, 2012, 07:14:55 PM
You can't do it with just JavaScript, which is why torbutton allows JavaScript. You need a plugin like Flash.
5271  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which (natural) language should I learn? on: April 25, 2012, 07:23:41 AM
I have finalized my course schedule for fall, and I will be taking French. Hopefully I'll like it (or it won't be too bad, at least). Thanks a lot to everyone who replied! Smiley
5272  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 31 on: April 25, 2012, 05:18:04 AM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Efficacy stats:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=54182.0

Info about the current ad slots:

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 02:00:00 on May 2, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

5275  Other / Meta / Re: [Request] New "Potential Scammer" Tag on: April 24, 2012, 12:34:48 PM
If someone is a proven scammer, then they should get the scammer tag right away. They can pay back afterward and have the tag removed.

I wasn't willing to scammer-tag shakaru immediately because I felt that he was not a scammer. At the time I thought that his contracts were broken accidentally and he was going to start paying back the money ASAP. I guess you want the "potential scammer" tag to apply to people who have accidentally broken contracts but haven't paid back yet, since intentional contract-breakers and people who refuse to start paying back are given the scammer tag right away. This seems too harsh to me, and likely to cause drama when a high-reputation member is accidentally a few days late on a loan payment.
5276  Other / Off-topic / Re: In a few moments, I'll be dead. on: April 24, 2012, 02:51:04 AM
Thanks to those of you who acted responsibly and tried to help the police locate him.

Atlas always uses Tor, so I can't be sure, but I'd guess that his account was not hacked and Emanuel Ortego is indeed an alt.
5277  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] Diablo Mining Company (DMC) on: April 22, 2012, 09:04:51 PM
Potential investors and I are just not seeing eye to eye on this, and its a waste of time and money to try to continue. I want to make sure no one can get a stranglehold on the Bitcoin economy, but no one really seems to either think that can happen (stealth privately owned mining companies, etc), or they don't see its worth plunking the money down as a sort of insurance.

I think it's possible for a big, long-term mining operation like this to get funding and succeed, but this isn't a good way to issue shares. You should partner with someone who knows more about finance/business.
5278  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Dedicated bitcoin devices - dealing with untrusted networks on: April 22, 2012, 08:57:27 PM
It needs to know its unspent outputs so it can calculate the balance of a transaction received for signing.

The recipient just needs to provide the device with copies of all of the transactions-being-spent (I forgot about this in my previous post). Then the device can calculate the input value and easily see the output value.
5279  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Dedicated bitcoin devices - dealing with untrusted networks on: April 21, 2012, 09:13:48 PM
A secure Bitcoin spending device doesn't need to store anything other than its private keys. It can give its public keys to the recipient and rely on them to create a valid unsigned transaction. The device just needs to figure out the BTC spent by the transaction (total output BTC minus output BTC to the device's keys) and get the user to confirm. It doesn't matter if the device is given an invalid transaction to sign, since the network will reject it.

It'd be nice for the device to store some transaction details for accounting purposes, of course.
5280  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] Diablo Mining Company (DMC) on: April 21, 2012, 07:21:13 PM
I think you'd be a good person to lead a long-term mining project, but I don't like how this is structured. The risk is much higher for early investors, since it isn't yet known whether your operation will be successful. Reasonable investors will wait until you start making profits and then buy shares at 1 BTC per share instead of buying them now at the same price. Even if you promised to increase the price later (maybe starting at a low price per share now), the price might still be too high given that each share will only get a millionth of the dividend eventually.

If I were you I'd get nanotube's advice on how to properly do something like this.
