Mining with GPU's is even more dead. Once Alpha-T Viper and KNC Titan Asic Scrypt Miners hit the market, it's over for those AMD R9 rigs. The advantage with GPUs is you can always sell (or use) them later. My home system just got a free R9 290 upgrade since I've shutdown a small scrypt farm. The issue is dedicated H/W. For example I have a single BFL FPGA single sitting around waiting to go in the trash. There is nothing else to do with it. ASIC H/W that is power efficient will at least last several years where you can run it at around break even. However ASIC H/W that is not power efficient only has a short lifetime since better H/W makes it unprofitable to even turn on. This is why buying early ASICs was always a losing option, you are buying something that is guaranteed to have a short lifetime and long ROI... You won't be able to sell those GPU's when the market will be flooded with R9 290x's after all Scrypt miners shut their rigs down due to the massive network hash jump. A few pennies a day isn't worth it running a 5 or 6 card GPU rig, especially with the electrical costs. With Asic's you always have the good people of EBay.  |

Technologically impossible with those specifications, but look at the suckers that jumped the gun and brought one or two.

As long as there's a Mt. Gox or Gox exchange re-opening soon, getting "Goxed" will remain as part of our vocabulary.
Let's hope they learn after their relaunch. Personally, I'd rather them be completely gone, but I still want to see the community that traded with them get their restitution first.

Currently, no. The BTC price and difficulty make it impossible to ROI at the moment. Time to just buy BTC. You mean your electricity price. I am quite sure someone in WA at 0.027c /kWh could get positive ROI. Where do you get that price from? Fixin' to get ready to sell something ain't the same as selling something....I don't get why they don't continue to sell the S1s "like hotcakes" even if they have to allocate some of the chips to keep the sales flow going.
The only logical reason I can think of is that their margin on the S1s at the current selling price is so low that it makes sense to build the quantity of the next batch of S2s (which will presumably sell at a much higher margin). Gotta tell you (bitmain) that I would rather buy a few S1s at a slightly higher price than invest $3K in the new S2...maybe it's just me...
I have a feeling it has something to do with the current bitcoin price... Agreed, they're not making profits of the S1 at current BTC price, so they halt all sales. I remember they mysteriously sold out a month or 2 back due to similiar circumstances, then all the sudden they were available. |
