What are VKMs?  Virtual Knowledge Managers?  What harm can they do?

Virtual Keyboard and Mouse.  A well known bitcoin casino had their data center's maintenance site hacked.  Someone put in an order to have a VKM installed.  The machine rebooted and the attackers attempted to use the vkm to get console access.  Thankfully, the casino used full-disk encryption, so reboots required a manual password step.
Attackers in this space are really, really clever.

lmao

Do you want to resolve our trust dilemma?

But you don't need stratum to use p2pool do you?

Doesn't p2pool adjust the difficulty to optimise for your hashing speed?

Also what miner does not support stratum?

-MarkM-

I don't think p2pool supports http.

And old asics like avalon.

STILL HODLING
5346  Other / Meta / Re: Offline Bitcoin Forum? on: January 18, 2014, 07:46:32 AM
No but the owners should release a weekly sql dump for transparency.

If I owned the site, I certainly wouldn't even consider this, not for one nanosecond.

I do own a different forum, and I am certain that if such a thing were suggested there, my response would be an unqualified "fuck off".

Then release an sql dump.

Huh? What do proxies have to do with p2pool ?

-MarkM-

A proxy is needed when your miner doesn't support stratum from p2pool.

5348  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ebay UK annouces new policy for virtual currencies on: January 18, 2014, 07:43:36 AM
I didn't have one successful auction on eBay because the highest bidders could not pass my very simple verification process. I was only selling $10 to $50 BTC worth at the time. I lost money from all the final value credit refund fees that never covered the auction cost.

What was your verification process?
5349  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoins and Taxes on: January 18, 2014, 07:24:15 AM
im lost

say i mined 10 Bitcoins over 1 year. i did not sell any. i accumulated extra $200 per month in electricity than normal. i also paid say $3,000 for my mining gear. what do i report/deduct for my taxes?

the only thing i understand is that while i created 10 bitcoins out of thin air, i did not sell it for cash, so i do not report capital gains. but can i still claim a deduction to my expenses such as the electrcity, mining gear, and the depreciation?

I don't think you can deduct personally. It must be a business. And yes no gains, just like unsold inventory.
5350  Other / Meta / Image proxy protect people from themself? Passes exif on: January 18, 2014, 07:06:36 AM
I know this forum is liberal. But certain precautionary steps should be taken.

Right now the proxy passes exif data, what do you think about sterilizing images? This is a real threat with more and more gps coordinates being included.

Example (no gps though): https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi.i.cbsi.com%2Fcnwk.1d%2Fi%2Ftim2%2F2014%2F01%2F03%2FDSC_0758.jpg&t=536&c=lzjV3-xLXoRlNg
5351  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Phase I complete - Bitcoin is officially legitimate in 2014 on: January 18, 2014, 07:03:53 AM
I can't believe we made it this far. Shit was scary when mt gox got their bank accounts seized. Now we are officially legitimate. When the fbi sells the coins, it's sealed. Because they can't say thanks for the money, now theyre illegal.

Phase II is now, not price stability, but a solid price floor. I cant wait until the price is impossible to move below $1000. At that point Bitcoin is officially successful and nothing can ever stop it.

Getting replaced? Never. Look at ipv6, its 2014 and its at 0. ThIs forum doesn't even support it and we have amazing coders here. As Andreas said, "it's good enough."

Phase III is love.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs
Wow, you seem very attached to Bitcoins lol. But I'm with ya, especially with the part about there not being a replacement. Either a.) Bitcoins are never replaced and grow into a respected currency. Or b.) They are shut down  and banned as they don't promote the National level.

I don't see anything replacing them.

Many have made love to their miners..

I want to make love to this thing!!

5352  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: eToro launches Bitcoin trade on: January 18, 2014, 04:21:44 AM
They are saying they do hold bitcoins so this is good for traders. Very easy, no security risk and a very compliant exchange. As long as they hold the right amount of bitcoins at all times, I approve.

Though they have a great chance at becoming a real exchange this point with timing and their brand bought them this much time.
5353  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin not legal tender in Canada on: January 18, 2014, 03:27:25 AM
Canada will go the way of the US. The Canadian bitcoin industry has been very responsible and is in regular official communication through one main lawyer with the government. We are no India or China.

If the US moves against Bitcoin, Canada won't be far behind. And remember, if they move against it, it's a badge of honor for bitcoin. Bitcoin is it's own hedge, it's so superior that if it's banned it'll be an admission by the central banks that their system can't survive crypto's adoption, meaning everyone will choose to hold crypto to guard against the poor house as fiat collapses from the straw on the camel's back (the straw being crypto).

Anyways, I'm super glad for all this bearish news because I got a whack of fiat waiting for all the idiots to sell to me (why would you sell below $4000 in the next three months?!?!?). We know that btc will reach $40,000 with Zynga, Overstock.com, etc., and porn industry and the 250,000 ZipZap (or whatever) convenience stores adopting it. The major retailers are lining up to adopt it for payment.

How much cash do you have? I love hearing people buy Bitcoin. Can you keep us updated?

Almost
5357  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Why is BTC value significantly different among exchangers? on: January 17, 2014, 04:29:15 PM
If MtGox price is distorted, why is it often taken as a reference in transactions? Or is it just sellers that intentionally take it as a reference to profit from its higher price?

It's our first exchange, the defacto standard but we're slowly switching to bitstamp

I think MTGox should go back to trading Magic the Gathering cards and drop bitcoins  Cheesy

They'll close soon. It's a burden now and the owner is done making millions and can go on permavacation. That fucker was at the right place at the right time. Insanely lucky.

In the U.S., legal tender refers to what forms of money cannot be refused by a creditor for extinguishing a debt.

Legal tender DOES NOT dictate what can be used as money or currency. Is the use of this term different in Canada?

No it's just fud
5360  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin not legal tender in Canada on: January 17, 2014, 03:27:04 PM
Definition of Legal Tender "coins or banknotes that must be accepted if offered in payment of a debt."

By this definition Bitcoin is not legal tender anywhere in the world and probably won't be for a long time to come. This is just governments posturing and making themselves seen to be warning their citizens about Bitcoin, while they figure out what the hell it is  Huh

They don't give a shit about businesses or debts, they only care to enforce use their own currency which they can print to pay taxes.
