It is a bit surprising that there is only 6500 nodes...Running bitcoin-qt validates as a full node?

Yes, but if you can't be reached from the outside (e.g. NAT + no UPnP, firewalled), your node may be ignored/invisible
542  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What does anyone prevent from doing this? on: February 13, 2015, 03:20:50 PM
Don't forget the crypto in cryptocurrency. Just because you get to control the majority of the nodes doesn't mean you can start pretending anything is true. The network is there to relay messages, typically signatures, that can be mathematically tested, and every sane node does it.

So it wouldn't be very useful for the government (that evil gov't...) to invest in IPv4 addresses, not to mention the fact that they have many more at hand already ;-)

S5 sales are open Grin

1.73BTC each currently for 1155 GHS

I don't see anything to sell on the market only buy offer

Yes at the moment you can only buy miners, but I guess that once they'll be delivered (i.e. within 72 hours), buyers of miners will be able to resell GHS on the market.

A few hours ago it stopped hashing again, rebooted, the same problems again with module 1. Anyone?

I have a 3 modules CCD and one of them was unstable in normal and light overclocked ("turbo") modes. Strangely (probably because of the voltage increase) I had to switch to moderate overclocked to get all 3 modules hashing around 230 GHS each.

“The acceptance of PayCoin by GoUrl is huge,” said Josh Garza, CEO of PayCoin and BTC.

Wow, looks like Bitcoin appointed a new CEO recently Roll Eyes
547  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BurtW arrested on: February 11, 2015, 12:55:27 AM
Maybe he donated to his legal defense or started a thread to help raise money for the young guy who helped put bitcoin on the map.

You feel me?

I do, and yes who knows, maybe he did. Now there's a huge gap between what you do in private and what you do publicly, especially when you are the admin of the most watched Bitcoin board of the internets, with several posts already featured in various three-letter agencies reports.

To get back on topic, I agree that BurtW was a very active and appreciated member on this board and this feels more troubling to me than the whole SR downfall, because there's much more room for doubt about the exact meaning of 'derived from a criminal offense' here. Could be the PPT or anything really.

I'll wait and see I guess.

Haha, nice. Kudos on the Dennis Nedry GIF.

+1 this is soooo 1993, I loved it too Grin

Just curious... did you do anything to help Ross?? I mean Besides turning over the IP info on him to the feds!

Maybe altoid shouldn't have been using his real name gmail address in the first place?

Besides, what do you think were the alternatives for theymos after being subpoenaed?
550  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BurtW arrested on: February 11, 2015, 12:17:28 AM
seems like all Wagners are the same.

Srsly? Undecided

And what about Zerlan, Zipkin and Garza, seems like all Joshes are the same Roll Eyes

551  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: OFFICIAL CGMINER mining software thread for linux/win/osx/mips/arm/r-pi 4.9.1 on: February 10, 2015, 11:19:43 PM
Don't know as the U1/U2 code hasn't been intentionally touched in many moons and my U2s died a long time ago so I can't test them. Presumably one of the new drivers (U3 maybe?) affected them. Stick to an older version if it works for you.

For what it's worth, I can mine with my U1s on 4.9.1 without problems (tested: Windows binaries + compiled from github / Linux)
552  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: OFFICIAL CGMINER mining software thread for linux/win/osx/mips/arm/r-pi 4.9.1 on: February 08, 2015, 06:20:38 AM
I have ordered 3 monarchs from BFL and when i run them on CG-miner only 2 of them run and the other simply idles, 0.00/0.00 g/h. I'm not sure what to do to fix it, I have converted all the drivers to WinUSB so that they will run on CG- Miner Also it says BMS, while the other two working ones are BMA. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, also under my Device Manager the one that doesn't work is labeled as Bitfoce SHA265 SC while the others don't have the SC at the end. Please help me, I don't know what to do.

It seems to be a mixup between the older 65nm generation (Single SC) and the newer 28nm generation (Monarch). The fact that Windows Device Manager also recognizes one of them with "SC" at the end is intriguing to say the least, it seems that it's using a different USB device ID, suggesting a hardware problem. I guess (and hope for you) that it could also be driver related, as I don't know much about the USB subsystem implementation in MS Windows.

The BFL devices should come up as one of the following:

BAJ: BFL ASIC Jalapeño
BAL: BFL ASIC Little Single
BAS: BFL ASIC Single
BAM: BFL ASIC Minirig
BMA: BFL Monarch

According to your screenshot you are using cgminer version 4.9.1 (latest). The changelog for 4.9.1 mentions:

- Fix detection of butterfly labs sc 65nm devices with the addition of the 28nm device imanufacturers trumping their detection

So it looks like some changes were made to solve a related problem, but the other way around (not sure about this though). Anyway, I would suggest the following options:

  • Try previous versions of cgminer, I would try from 4.9.0 downwards, version 4.6.0 seems to be the first with BMA support
  • Try another host computer, preferably with another host OS (e.g. Linux instead of Windows)
  • Wait for ckolivas to chime in and give you a better insider advice Wink
  • Obviously, if all else fails, then try to get lucky with BFL RMA...
553  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Only have enough $$ to buy one mining rig... SHA-256 vs Scrypt Mining?! on: February 07, 2015, 06:45:30 PM
Electricity is not an issue.

Okay, well then mining is certainly an option for you. However you'd better ask your mom, dad, boss, landlord, dorm manager or whoever is paying the bill about it beforehand, just make sure you won't get kicked out or fired when they find out that your "investment" return is actually coming from their expenses Wink

As for scrypt vs SHA256, it depends on your belief in the altcoin markets, I guess.
554  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Only have enough $$ to buy one mining rig... SHA-256 vs Scrypt Mining?! on: February 07, 2015, 06:37:31 PM
I also heard that mining litecoins, dogecoins and other scrypt coins will make your profit since you can mine a substantial of them in a short time and are not worth alot, but if the value of one goes up, profit will occur. Should I buy a Mining rig for bitcoins(SHA-256) or Dogecoin/litcoin (Scrypt)?

Assuming that you are mining for a profit (vs just a hobby or experiment) and that you are not getting "free" power from your mom's garage or something, then what you heard is obsolete. It was only valid until the moment when it became CHEAPER for the "home miner" to buy coins on the market rather to mine them.

Let's assume that you have $230 to invest right now. Buy 1 BTC with them. If BTC price goes up 10x, then you'll have made $2,300 with your $230 investment.

If you buy mining gear instead, and take let's say half of it ($130) for the hardware, and the other half for electricity, then you will never be able to make anything even *close* to 1 BTC (guessing at most 0.2-0.3 BTC right now). Again, if BTC goes up 10x, then you will only have made $460-$690 with your initial $230 investment, instead of $2,300 with the buying BTC option.

EDIT: the same goes for scrypt coins, AFAIK it's even worse. And be careful with altcoins, they carry BTC instability + their own...
555  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Mining Container ~100kW by Polivka GmbH on: February 07, 2015, 04:39:10 PM
Costly compared to what? Ever asked for a quotation of a factory hall with all the cooling and power distribution? Also with this you are more flexible regarding the location.

I know mining calculations look not really good at the moment - guess why this thing is still empty...

It's not that your price is costly compared to anything similar, it's just that the mining market is so saturated already that there is no hope for professional miners to succeed right now, unless 1) you live anywhere above the polar circle AND 2) have access to (preferably low-latency) internet AND 3) have access to hundreds of kW <$0.04 kWh AND last but not least, 4) have access to an investment capital >$100k.

OR, mum's garage and call "ROI" what would be like stealing from her wallet at night...

I have been mining for over a year at profit (GPUs then ASICs), even rented two dedicated room for this, found investors for the equipment and foolishly guaranteed their principal, now we have to cover for this from my own pocket and my associate's, just to recover our investors' principal (as we were not scammers, we didn't implement financial insulation like an LLC or something). It's so frustrating for many of us, really. But you know, lesson learned Wink

557  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Announcing Hashnest.com S5 Marketplace - 100% Uptime Guaranteed on: February 07, 2015, 09:36:51 AM
Thanks for the great news.

IIRC stock efficiency is about 0.5W/GHS for the S5 but it gets better for lower hash rates. So what will happen when the maintenance fee is nearing the mining revenue, will you lower the voltage of the S5 and reduce the contracts accordingly? This would be a nice option, but it could be difficult to do in practice on Hashnest with the trading and all...
558  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: HASHNEST Discussion and Support Thread on: February 07, 2015, 09:29:20 AM
Open S5 already.   Angry

S5 is finally coming! EDIT: not, the announcement was 10 days old already, sorry about this

You mean like someone with the ability to spoof the caller ID to an arbitrary number? That is technically possible but standard telephone carrier policy is to deny it. Virtual/IP-based telephony providers like Skype generally require SMS-based verification (others may use callback).
560  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Use 2 PSUs on one Antminer S3? on: February 07, 2015, 04:20:33 AM
I have only experimented OC with the S1 so I'll let other S3 owners step in. Generally speaking, I've never had any miner damaged from OC, worst case scenario was (controlled) overheating or chips temporarily failing until power cycle.
