5401  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-09-10] Community-Funded Bitcoin Awareness Campaign Unveiled in Hong Kong on: September 25, 2020, 02:54:47 AM
What has Hong Kong done to stop Beijing from implementing the security law?
The moment the UK decided to honor their treaty in 97 was the moment the fate of HK was sealed.

Exactly! It was the moment the countdown began. And, just recently, the thing has happened. Hong Kong has now lost its freedom. Hong Kong's democracy was a ticking bomb the moment the UK turned it over to China.

@Darker45. The motives for any cryptocoin ad campaign is always similar. To hype, pump and the whales to dump on the community again. The people behind this ad campaign does not care for the people's freedom.

Bitcoin cannot be compared to "any cryptocoin." The ad campaign that we are talking here is not even initiated by Bitcoin itself, its fund not coming from Bitcoin, the people involved not in any way under payroll from Bitcoin, and so on. They appear to me as mere advocates and enthusiasts who are probably shelling out money from their own pockets for this. Of course, they too have their own BTC, so they will of course gain something if Bitcoin becomes more popular. We all will.

I don't know where you're coming from in saying that the people behind this initiative does not care for the people's freedom.
5402  Economy / Economics / Re: Why criminals prefer cash (Fiat) on top of crypto? on: September 25, 2020, 02:03:26 AM
Well, fiat is the money that the world knows. It's the default money of everyone, good and bad, criminal or not. It is therefore common knowledge that fiat is also the preferred currency of the criminals.

There are, of course, those handful of criminals who are exposed to certain options such as Bitcoin and privacy cryptocurrencies. A lot of them are those who are dealing in the black markets accessible in dark and deep webs. But I guess the percentage of these criminals is very little compared to those who are in the open streets and in glass offices.

I bet only a small portion of the entire world's criminals is familiar with Bitcoin or crypto in general.

5405  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [ BOXING ]: Fury vs Wilder III in Las Vegas on 18th July 2020 !!! on: September 24, 2020, 01:24:09 PM
If the cannot go ahead for the next 6-8 months because of social distancing at venues then these boxers are losing the prime years of their boxing careers. This is not a good mentally place for them to be as they have no idea when the fight will go ahead.

I don't think the social distancing protocol would hinder this fight with live audience for 6-8 months. But the promoters would have to content themselves with lesser gate entry if it is required that live audience will have to take a seat apart from one another. But if there is a barrier in between seats, then they might get the green light for a full seating capacity.

Either way, the promoters are certainly looking for the best and most profitable ways for this fight to happen in the soonest time possible. If live audience will be limited, they could always expect that PPV buys would be shooting high.
5406  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Why should I use hardware wallet on: September 24, 2020, 04:48:22 AM
Hot wallets aren't really that bad, assuming you actually know what you're doing; and the fact is, it's just better for A LOT of people to just grab an affordable hardware wallet from Ledger/Trezor than to gamble away their security.

The same goes for any hardware wallet, because if someone thinks that by purchasing such a device he has ensured complete security, then he is greatly mistaken. What definitely distinguishes a hardware wallet from a desktop/mobile/online crypto wallet is that such devices generate seed (private keys) in a secure isolated environment of the device itself - and that for each action the user must confirm it by pressing a physical button on the device, which means it gives us the ability to protect ourselves from malware that wants to deceive us in any way.

Considering how many users of hardware wallets have become victims of fraud (clipboard malware, fake wallets asking for seed, hardware wallets with pre-generated seed) we can conclude that those who are not fully familiar with what they do, have almost the same chances to get hack no matter how they store their crypto.

Exactly! It is not as if you could say, "I know nothing or very little of crypto wallets and so I would just go for a hardware wallet to avoid any problems." You should actually know what you are doing regardless of which particular wallet you use, cold or hot, web or desktop or paper or mobile or whatever.

Hardware wallets are not safe havens for those who are lazy, less knowledgeable, careless, and negligent crypto owners. Even with a hardware wallet, it may only take one false move before all your funds are gone. Knowledge, at least the basic, is prerequisite in crypto. The type of wallet you use doesn't make up for it.
5407  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-09-10] Community-Funded Bitcoin Awareness Campaign Unveiled in Hong Kong on: September 24, 2020, 03:45:20 AM
I am skeptical about this ad campaign. This appears or might only really be those similar to the larpers we see in the cryptospace.

What has Hong Kong done to stop Beijing from implementing the security law?

There doesn't seem to appear hints that there are actually some ulterior motives of the group in launching this ad campaign. It appears plain promotion of Bitcoin to me.

I think Hong Kong as a whole did a lot in fighting against the passage of the law. But it seems China's influence has already ran deep in Hong Kong's politics. And all the efforts went to waste.
5408  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Escrow Options ? on: September 24, 2020, 02:47:37 AM
1. If its allowed to offer such a server here on forums or not ?
2. If it is, Shall i create 1 thread and just update it when i have new tokens for sale or shall i create a new thread for every token
3. If its allowed is this something that the community will be interested in ?
Thanks

You are allowed, but you don't need to create a separate thread every time you are selling a token. You might end up spamming. It is best to just create a single thread with all the coins you are selling as well as their corresponding ask prices. Just update it regularly.

As for the community's interest, it will depend on the tokens you are selling and their prices. Just make sure it is significantly cheaper compared to their launch or ICO prices or, if traded, to their exchange prices. Otherwise, it might not spark any interest among users here.

Finally, I guess your tokens sale thread should be created on this board, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=161.0. That's Marketplace (Altcoins).

Good luck!
5409  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Newbie Should be Careful When Received New Follower From Famous Bitcoiner on: September 24, 2020, 02:01:42 AM
It makes me worry if happens with newbie and don't know the real. Always Triple checking the username when received new followers and don't take action when received a scam message like sending bitcoin, etc.

You may not actually go through all the hassles of triple checking every single follower of yours, especially those who send you messages. Treat every social media platform with a grain of salt, and just shun every single message coming from anybody you didn't contact first and you do not know personally.

Even if it is the confirmed official twitter accounts of Jameson Lopp or Jimmy Song or Lebron James or Donald Trump or whoever that is which is sending you a DM asking for as low as 1 Satoshi, treat it with a solid red flag and dismiss it as scam altogether.
5410  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks Launder $2 Trillion While Claiming BTC Is For Money Laundering? on: September 24, 2020, 01:28:48 AM
This may be the popular idea before when Bitcoin was still mostly used underground, but ever since Bitcoin has went mainstream the idea has faded away. Perhaps only a few stubborn people are left sticking to this anti-Bitcoin view.

As to money laundering, fiat is the money used by everyone so it is understood that it will also be the same money used for money laundering. The entire fiat value of Bitcoin is a tiny amount compared to the overall fiat amount in circulation.
5411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Operation DisrupTor: Over $6.5m in cash and crypto seized by FBI on: September 23, 2020, 01:37:44 PM
over $6.5 Million in cash and crypto
At least they wont be able to put all the blame on Crypto. Is it known which Crypto was seized?

The long article made no mention of specific cryptocurrencies that were seized aside from Bitcoin. But Bitcoin was only mentioned once. Moreover, out of the $6.5 million that was seized, only $1.6 million was in cryptocurrency.

Clearly, this article by the US Department of Justice is unlike others which are somehow insinuating cryptocurrency, primarily Bitcoin, as the preferred currency used in criminal transactions underground.
5412  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Kraken Is Returning to Japan on: September 23, 2020, 05:08:28 AM
If I'm not mistaken, this Kraken exchange was in US based, so how many branches of Kraken are there? It seems they are widely operating their service now, the country of Japan has many crypto enthusiasts traders for sure it has a wide adoption there.

So, in different cities different account isn't it? It means if you have existed account on Kraken and if you want to create account in Karken exchange that Japan based you need to re-submit KYC.

I have doubt this Kraken will compete to Binance exchange soon.

Kraken is US-based which has since expanded widely in the Asia-Pacific region.

If you already have an existing Kraken account, I don't think you need to create another one. Why would you? Kraken's exchange platform in Japan is not a separate site if I'm not mistaken, unlike Binance which has a Binance.us as a separate company from Binance.com. For Kraken, it's the same Kraken.com. It's not Kraken.com.jp or Kraken.jp or whatever. But if you are from Japan and used to be an old customer of Kraken, you will have to.[1]

Quote
Please note that Japan residents who previously traded with Kraken will need to create new accounts.

Kraken is already a close competitor of Binance, although in terms of volume Binance is really far ahead.

5413  Economy / Economics / Re: DeFi vs. CeFi? on: September 23, 2020, 04:25:21 AM
With the old way of hodling, BTC could indeed somehow be likened to a pet rock whose value is rising over time. With DeFi, hodling would mean your BTC itself is growing as well. But the catch is that you are not owning it in the strict sense of the word because it is deposited in someone else's wallet, where a third party is using it as a capital for lending, for example.

That is what is happening in our current centralized fiat banking, only that we are actually given an insignificant portion of the profit and without the use of the latest technologies such as blockchain, smart contract, and the like.

The question is, how much is the cost of security? If your DeFi investment yields 15-20% of profit a year, is that high enough ROI to somehow balance the risks that come along with leaving your funds in the hands of a third party? As early as now, there are already millions burned due to DeFi exit scams.
5414  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Gibraltar Enables Itself to Comply with FATF guidelines on: September 23, 2020, 03:02:56 AM
I find nothing particularly wrong with the principles of this regulation. The stipulations are apparently for the protection and smooth business experience of every DLT provider's customers and even the DLT providers themselves.

The terms are general, though. So we still do not know the specific steps and policies that would be implemented by each DLT provider in line with them. For example, under this:

Quote
8. A DLT Provider must have systems in place to prevent, detect and disclose financial crime risks such as money laundering and terrorist financing.

DLT Providers must adequately apply anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing preventive measures which are commensurate with their risks, and report suspicious transactions. DLT Providers need to be aware of the vulnerabilities of its products and services to financial crime risks and ensure that they implement measures to mitigate the risks.

DLT Providers need to comply with the Proceeds of Crime Act and any guidance issued by the GFSC.

I have these particular probing questions, among others:

  • What specific "systems" are they talking about?
  • What are these "preventive measures" that would be implemented under this specific principle?
  • Are they going to be requiring KYC to each and every customer?
  • What are covered under "suspicious transactions"?
  • What steps are DLT Providers going to take upon the discovery of these "suspicious transactions"?
  • Will there be immediate blocking of accounts and the like?
5415  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ATMs Surge As There Are Now Over 10,000 Bitcoin ATMs Worldwide on: September 23, 2020, 02:29:43 AM
As of the time I was writing this, there are 10115 crypto ATMs in the world. I checked this directly on coinatmradar (https://coinatmradar.com/).

Well, your response was posted 2 days ago. As of the time of this response of mine, there is already 10,213 crypto ATMs worldwide, according to the same source, coinatmradar.com.

I mean, wow! Can you believe it? Just shy of 100 ATMs were already installed in just a couple of days. This number is really rising fast.

By the way, does coinatmradar.com also deduct from their count those ATMs which are already non-functional?
5416  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-09-10] Community-Funded Bitcoin Awareness Campaign Unveiled in Hong Kong on: September 23, 2020, 01:52:41 AM
It is really elating to hear that there is such a thing as Bitcoin Association of Hong Kong which has been in existence since the early years of Bitcoin, and they are doing things like these. While Bitcoin itself doesn't have a marketing team, people like the ones who made up this amazing association are doing things and spending money to selflessly promote Bitcoin and Bitcoin alone; no exchange, no wallet, no site, no whatsoever attached to the ads.

They are very courageous people, too, putting up the ads in the most strategic of locations such as "outside of the Bank of China HK, HSBC and Standard Chartered HK headquarters." My worries, though, do these people stay anonymous in buying these ads space?

I can only hope they continue to have funds to support this great initiative and be able to stretch the duration beyond October 8.
5417  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is the price of BTC (and any other crypto) always higher in Asian countries? on: September 22, 2020, 04:34:02 AM
It may have something to do with the spread of the exchange, the fluctuations of the local currency's value versus USD, premium on BTC, price adjustments not in real time, less liquidity, manipulation on the exchange, and so forth or a combination of all or some of these factors.

As of this posting, for example, the price of BTC is $10,470 which should only be ₱507,585.60, that's Philippine Peso, at 1$ = ₱48.48. However, if you look at the exchange price in the local coins.ph where people could convert their fiat to BTC, it is at ₱524,170.12.

But I remember doing a few trades with the local exchange coinspro where the spread could narrow down significantly, it was a different scenario, if my memory serves me right. I don't know if it was the delay or lack of liquidity or even manipulation but if, for example, I would place a sell order at $10,500's value in PHP, the price outside may already hit $10,600 but my sell order hasn't been filled yet. The price would then rise at $10,700, for example, and my order gets filled. Also, if I place a buy order at $10,000, for example, and the price outside is already at $9,900, it may happen that my order will not be filled as well. The price would then fall to $9,800, for example, and the order gets filled.
5418  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Exchanges have cheap coin listing fees. on: September 22, 2020, 03:15:41 AM
You once asked for exchanges which provide listing free of charge, and then exchanges which charge 30-50 BTC, and now exchanges which charge listing fee less than 0.5 BTC.

If what you are going to get listed is the token of RingMusic (RMTK), I sincerely advise you to just stick to unknown exchanges which admit tokens for free. It is because your token is also unknown. If you prefer paying a decent exchange to have your token admitted, I'm afraid it will still end up delisted for lack of interest or liquidity.

Exchange listing of a token does not help improve a project; development does.
5419  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Craig Wright To Face Trial on: September 22, 2020, 02:37:09 AM
This is what he gets by attracting too much attention. Well, be careful what you wish for. He was badly in need of attention. Now, look where he is.

Well, he owns at least $11 Billion in BTC as he claims. He could therefore afford to hire the best lawyers in town to take care of the cases. For him, he could spend his days doing what he loves, stress-free. Or does he own them? Either way, good luck to you, Satoshi. Grin
5420  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Entering the Privacy & Anonymity Atmosphere. What are the costs? on: September 21, 2020, 03:51:32 AM
there must have been countless of terrorism activities and other crimes which were prevented out of intelligence information gathered through surveillance and monitoring efforts.
If there are "countless", then why is there no evidence of this? Here are three different reports from 5 years apart, which all say the same thing - evert time the evidence is examined, there is no evidence to find that mass surveillance is effective, at all.

~snip~

The government and associated three letter agencies therefore fully know mass surveillance is ineffective at preventing attacks, and yet continue to spend billions of dollars on it every year. Why? Because mass surveillance was never about preventing attacks; it's about population control.

Well, does this count? 30 Terrorist Plots Foiled: How the System Worked This was published a decade ago. Accordingly:

Quote
Based on public information, the U.S. has foiled at least 30 terrorist attacks since 9/11. In two cases, the outcome was the result of sheer luck. The foiling of the rest was the result of good law enforcement and effective intelligence gathering and information sharing.

Anyway, I am not defending mass surveillance. Indiscriminate snooping must be ridiculously costly as it is unethical. But, as I've said, there must be a certain degree of surveillance which the government cannot do away with in its role as the primary keeper of peace and order. This might entail breaking into individual private lives which is definitely unacceptable to us as much as it is inevitable to the law enforcers. That is why I am a little bit torn and would rather not choose an extreme side.

Privacy must be treated with sanctity if I may say but it cannot be made an absolute excuse and be invoked in every step of the way. Certain individuals who are monitored under reasonable suspicion cannot just easily get away by saying their lives are private.

~snip~
I'm quite sure there are way less Bitcoin criminals than you imagine.

I don't imagine there's a lot either. I think there's very few of them vis-a-vis the total number.

Quote
Privacy is both a right and a privilege I would say. With so many crimes being carefully planned in secret, the state must also be left with no choice but to dig a little deeper up to a certain degree where a little of privacy is breached.
I hate how the vast majority of people talk about Bitcoin crimes as if they even occupy a significant percentage of the money used/stolen in crimes.

I don't think the vast majority of people talk this way. There's just probably only a handful of them left who remain stubborn with their idea of Bitcoin as a criminal's currency.

Quote
Does anyone really trust their own government? I can personally confirm the answer is negative for at least 90% of the people I know.

Nobody trusts the government. Governments could easily be the most hated entities. But wait until the last remnant of it is gone; it must be hell. And then a new government necessarily arises. That is why I am still convinced of the basic tenets of the social contract theory.
