The auction is extended by 30 minutes because of aurumxchange's late bid. The auction will end when the countdown reads 00:30:00 if there are no other bids.

Current state:

- They were in the wrong section.
- You're posting way too many "announcement" topics.
5465  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Ultimate Delimma on: March 03, 2012, 09:07:00 PM
Anonymity allows a service to opt out of the legal system (to some degree). Without legal restrictions, services can operate with much lower cost and risk, though users of the service will have higher risk. I don't see anything morally wrong with it as long as the service doesn't pretend to be non-anonymous -- users can weigh lower costs with higher risks and make their own decisions.

Doesn't common sense say that no matter what happens, if something is anonymous, it shouldn't be trusted because the risk is too high?

It's reasonable to trust anonymous services when it's more profitable for them to operate legitimately than to steal everyone's money. This is common for services that don't hold onto customer money for long periods of time, such as stores.

Quote
I am ready to humble myself and work towards an entirely new mindset, one where "exchanges" like CoinExchanger can actually exist without me saying a word otherwise, but there are just too many unanswered questions.

There's nothing wrong with you investigating them or pointing out that they are very risky to use. Arguing that risky, anonymous, or scammy services should be prevented from existing is incorrect in my opinion -- let the customers decide for themselves.

Quote
Should his claim that he has 12,000BTC of the stolen coins not be investigated?

Nothing wrong with investigating it and revealing the truth. It'll give customers more info about the service's trustworthiness. Stealing BTC is obviously a sign of serious immorality, and knowingly storing stolen coins could also be seen as immoral.

What good is reputation if everyone is anonymous?

Building a reputation is expensive. So having a good reputation can be seen as a sort of security deposit.

His response and I invite Theymos to confirm or debunk it.

I confirm that CoinHunter sent this PM to BitcoinEXpress:
If you do anything like this I will contact the police immediately.

(I'm not taking any sides here and I haven't even read this thread -- I'm just confirming a PM on request.)

How can you reimburse that much? Have you really made that much profit?
5469  Other / Meta / Re: "Most Online Today" on: March 02, 2012, 03:31:42 AM
"Most online today" is the highest number of people active at once today. "500" means that sometime today, 500 people were active at around the same time.
5470  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockexplorer is either Down or Running Extremely Slow & Stuck at 166899 Blocks on: March 02, 2012, 02:33:25 AM
It'll be fixed in a few minutes.

Putting the bitcoind block database in memory makes things much faster, but I think the data somehow gets easily corrupted in a way which causes bitcoind to reject all additional blocks. I'll try putting the database on the SSD instead.
5471  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Possible Bitcoin theft [ Intersango/Bitcoincconsultancy on notice] on: February 28, 2012, 05:14:37 AM
Yes, mizerydearia should set up some process for allowing users to get their BTC back (I have ~10 BTC tied up there). But I'm sure that mizerydearia has no intention of stealing the BTC, and Bitcoin Consultancy isn't involved at all. This hostility isn't necessary.
5472  Other / Off-topic / Re: I just got 100k bitcoins (donation), what should I do? on: February 28, 2012, 03:42:57 AM
I'd convert about half to precious metals. The rest I'd save, investing some in Bitcoin projects.
5473  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: February 28, 2012, 03:22:10 AM
How do we know this wasn't JUST added?HMMM

The checkbox was added around a month ago. The rest of the "agreement" was there for much longer.

5475  Other / Off-topic / Re: Business idea (Off-Topic, but looking for feedback) on: February 27, 2012, 04:54:04 AM
Very, very ambitious project. I doubt it would succeed, even if a big corporation tried it.

- Is this actually a problem? How much money can a Wall-Mart store save by using your system instead of their current system?
- Getting approval for this from governments will be a nightmare, especially with automated vehicles. Every town you have to go through will object to your rails.
- Why hasn't anyone done this already if it's so good?
- Your scheme is more like traditional rail than road transport. But traditional rail traffic has been declining (AFAIK). If businesses decreasingly value traditional rail's improved economy and speed, your system may not appeal to them.
5476  Other / Meta / Re: My ad results on: February 27, 2012, 03:28:50 AM
Glasswalker had some more positive results (probably due partially to the larger, more colorful ads now allowed):
- Our ad tag on our site (which is unique to one link from the ad) has received 129 unique pageviews since the last ad went live.
- The index page of the site (which is linked to from the forum post, which the ad also links to) received 454 unique page views during the ad run
(not all of those are from the ad, but a portion likely are).
- Not sure if you can see internal referrals to my forum thread from the ad to get a counter on click rate there.

So far the IPO has been very successful, (more so than several other IPOs for mining ops posted around the same time, our 30day volume (which is really just a 7 day volume) is higher than any other trading shares on GLBSE based on their 30day volume according to their market charts. And our 24h volume has traded higher than the others most of the time as well.

I can't say definitively how much of that came from the ad, but I would have to say the ad was well spent. (nearly 1000BTC in capital raised in the first week, with 700 more to be raised hopefully in the next week or two). at a cost of 8BTC per week for advertising.

You can feel free to share any of this info if it helps for future ad runs. I'll continue to gather data through this upcoming week as well.
5477  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 23 on: February 27, 2012, 02:20:36 AM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats: On the 20th of November, 2011, there were about 120,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 12,000 times per day. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme. Total views per day on more recent days (in February):
- 18th: 127142
- 19th: 137034
- 20th: 145058
- 21st: 115067
- 22nd: 137326
- 23rd: 139460
- 24th: 139261

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you bid, all of your previous bids are automatically canceled.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 02:00:00 on March 5, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

Creating so many topics is annoying, though. Might be better to create a topic called "Boss's ideas" and keep your new ideas there for a while before creating topics for them.
