5481  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Lots of questions. Help me get up to speed on: October 28, 2021, 07:47:33 AM
1.) Does anyone even use the bitcoin q / core desktop app anymore? I remember I'd always have the whole blockchain downloaded and run the official client, but it seems that people favor "online clients" these days if that's correct terminology? Blockchain online but wallet stored on client to save room? I figure that's a must for mobile apps now?

Although maybe not necessarily on mobile, SPV wallets have a big "market share".
But the later news made more people realize that they can be tracked and some more may have started using Bitcoin Core again (or their own servers, which need Bitcoin Core).
Also, let's not forget that far too many users (still) keep their funds in custodian wallets, usually exchanges.

2.) Mobile apps. Which is a good android client for bitcoin?

I use (rarely) Mycelium. It has (plenty of) room to improve (to be overly nice), but it's not a bad wallet and it's one of the very few that support hardware wallet, which imho it's a must, especially on mobile phones.

3.) I have lots of very old (2013) private keys generated on paper wallets from bitaddress.org with bitcoin on them. How do I go about importing them? Is there a good mobile app for importing older non-passworded private keys?

Mycelium can do that. But.. just read forward  Wink

4.) Maybe I should use a desktop client to import the keys in a safe linux machine rather than android? Is there an "online" version of a desktop app so I don't have to download the whole blockchain?

Yep. Safest would be to not import them into anything that's online. If it's big funds please stay on the safe side.
Learn the basis of cold storage and import the private keys onto a system that will never go online (it can be even a Linux on an USB stick) and keep only the addresses in a view wallet online. It's enough for spending safely. Tails OS with Electrum can be such a choice, but you'll have to read about persistent storage there (and always keep a copy of the keys or seed safely, maybe on paper).
Also consider buying a hardware wallet (and move to HD wallet, based on seed). Hardware wallets are pretty safe and pretty convenient too, especially if you're not a tech guy.

5.) Is it any more or less secure using online clients vs having the blockchain fully downloaded?

If you use SPV clients your funds can be tracked to you. No other big problems.
The coins can be stolen from you with or without Bitcoin Core if your system is not secure or you make mistakes (like keeping the keys "safely" in the e-mail)

I mostly tuned out of all latest updates, releases, security vulnerabilities since around 2015. Is there any news I should be up to speed on? I'm still trying to wrap my head around DeFi, NFTs, smart contracts, and all sort of new protocol lingo. Also Lighting/L1?

I'd start with cold storage, hardware wallets, SegWit and Lightning, especially as you have bitcoin.
Ah, please give a minute to the reading about clipboard hijackers too.
Then you can move on to altcoins/DeFi and such, although keep in mind that many of those may be just money traps (you can read about ICO era).
5482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Need some help!! on: October 27, 2021, 06:54:08 PM
I have done some research and if I am not wrong, it takes about 10 mins to do a block.

At an average of 10 minutes a new block is mined. But nowadays one needs special hardware to mine a new block. Usually many such hardware devices.
The miner receives some coins for that job.

All the blocks already mined can be downloaded for free by anybody connected to the network.

So, base of any who can share information on this, is there something I can do with blocks? are blocks worth anything?

If I understand your problem right, then the answer is "no, sorry".
If you indeed mined blocks, your wallet should have coins in it. That's the one to recover.

But on that transfer, I lost the key, or password.

If you still have that HDD and no other things (or at least not much) was written onto it, you may have a chance to recover your keys.
There are services that can do that. But you have to know a bit more than that, at least you have to know whether you indeed had coins in a wallet on that HDD.
5483  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Strange Bitcoin address on: October 27, 2021, 06:37:59 PM
All my research about wallets and addresses has taught me there are 3 types of Bitcoin address.

Actually there are a couple more, especially if testnet is also taken into account: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/List_of_address_prefixes
And if we take all the altcoins too... sky is the limit.

However, you should tell a little more about the background of all this. For example, afaik, a QR code is simply another representation for a text, it doesn't mean that this text has to be a Bitcoin address. Also, the fact you have hidden the text doesn't mean you've hidden the (so called) address. The QR code translates to

Code:
2F5UCBQJSMHZ5LOSQ6RW5UDYWQ5IPFL6QEH7S3VFTTWMVVQIBOIZCCY3UU

and any QR code reader can see that.
5484  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-10-24] A Crypto Friendly Future For Australia, Senators Propose New Regula on: October 27, 2021, 04:21:45 PM

Great link!

I'm pleasantly surprised the those making this paper actually have quite a good knowledge on the matter (did their homework properly).

Quote
Because many digital asset transactions take place several steps away from a crypto-to-fiat-currency trade, it can be very difficult for taxpayers to correctly assess their CGT liabilities under the current tax law and ATO guidance for these transactions.

I'm not into DeFi, but I'm impressed:

Quote
The committee heard that one of the most considerable barriers to entry for DeFi products is the numerous taxable events that may arise when a crypto-asset token interacts with a DeFi protocol.

And the list of recommendations - from a quick read - look pretty good.

Will Australia become the first country with proper regulation for crypto? Could be. I just hope they don't "break" this when they turn them in actual laws.
5485  Economy / Reputation / Re: 1xBit campaign is starting again. on: October 27, 2021, 02:58:16 PM
Which account do you mean, if you are aiming for an account named: @kingangel, created in 2013, @kingangel, not on terrace/for sale, but he is included in the most Alt list on this forum, all classified as the oldest accounts.

I was referring to mm2543363580 (2013), kingangel (2013), StLucifer (2012), Shagnasty (2012). All are very old and have small number of posts. Quite a.. pattern.
I didn't know about kingangel, but I'm not surprised at all.

I think they know about the situation of 1xBit gambling sites and the ugliness in this forum, but they knowingly, continue to apply in the 1xBit campaign, well-deserved warnings (red).

Yeah, that was my hunch too.
5486  Economy / Reputation / Re: [Discussion] Altcoin translator blacklist on: October 27, 2021, 01:51:14 PM
First user that is going to get his terrible job exposed on this thread, I'm almost nervous!

While the initiative is great, I think that you're doing it wrong.

First of all, aside of the posts where these guys are exposed, their usernames have to be in a properly visible list in the start of the thread, else nobody will search.

I'd add even more: maybe put in the same topic a list of good translators and a list of bad translators. This way whoever is looking of a translator can see who should he prefer and who he should avoid.
So maybe a "supporting" topic, only with these lists, is the next step to be done.
5487  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Recovering deleted wallet/files from HDD on: October 27, 2021, 01:26:44 PM
Is there an actual way to permanently delete such files from the HDD, forever?

If the HDD is working, there are various software around that can overwrite existing files with garbage before removing them (wipe) and there are programs that can do similar stuff with the current free space on your HDD.
If you're under Windows I recommend SysInternals SDelete for the job, since SysInternals were bought by Microsoft many years ago, hence it should be safe.

I'd rather not have someone recovering my wallets this way.

If you want to super-sure and super-safe, why don't you just create brand new wallets and move your coins there?
5488  Economy / Gambling / Re: Freebitco.in FROZE the provably fair system in WOF bonus on: October 27, 2021, 10:36:54 AM
I see that I can buy bonus spin on WOF by my RP, so I bought 1 bonus spin on WOF for every free roll, but when I go to spin the wheel, I see that the client seed section is FROZEN and I can't change it.

Then I refresh the page to see if the client seed is change and the system not allowed me to spin the wheel and erase my bonus for this roll.

SO WTF?!

Bugs do happen, so... chill down...
Did you try to use the contact form from the faq page or try to PM the owner TheQuin?
Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like a bug to me. It may be related to the cookie settings too, but.. you better ask the support what's the problem there.
5489  Economy / Reputation / Re: 1xBit campaign is starting again. on: October 27, 2021, 10:23:59 AM
Pretty sad. I see very old accounts too. Hacked/sold? Possibly.
Else I'd expect that an user - especially if created in 2013 - would check campaign manager's trust feedback before joining.

1. Bitcointalk name: D-law

At least this user doesn't have the signature; I guess that he may stay "under observation" until he does.

I've tagged atm only those who are wearing the signature. Will tag the missing ones if they wear it in the future.

Great job! As DT2 your tag already makes the things visible.
5490  Other / Archival / Re: False Breakout ? on: October 27, 2021, 09:53:17 AM
I don't know if it was a fake breakout or there's now a bear trap, but I agree that the growth is not over. The overall sentiment is still too good.
And news like the one about Mastercard just cannot be ignored (and yet you didn't mention it).

However, sadly, manipulation in this kind of cases for "a quick buck" by the large players is known to happen now and then. So, while it's good to have all this "put on a paper", it's not new behavior, at all.
5491  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Does anyone use cryptocurrencies to buy assets and services? on: October 27, 2021, 07:51:56 AM
I would like to know if anyone here uses cryptocurrencies to buy assets and services, I would also like to know if most companies accept crypto you would buy and why not buy such a service.Would they buy food in crypto?

This was asked and answered in various ways, maybe more than 100 of times, why don't you just search?

Investments are not meant to be held forever, people - sooner or later - will use them. Then some are already paid in crypto. Crypto is a form of money. People do spend crypto.

The problem is that some of the (too few) payment processors nowadays make it pretty much overpriced to spend crypto directly (service fees, bad conversion rates), but I don't see why people would not buy with crypto absolutely all that's being sold, including food. LN may need to start being used by payment processors though, to make this also work in the supermarket (to not wait for on-chain block confirmation times).
5492  Local / Altcoins (Monede Alternative) / Re: Cumpără acum! on: October 27, 2021, 07:07:40 AM

Daca nu are nimic in plus, e categorisita ca shitcoin. Asa ca nu exclud ca mutarea facuta de echipa initiala sa fi fost singura desteapta pentru ei.

Formularea in "legaleza"

5494  Economy / Economics / Re: $1 Billion Science Fund to Use Blockchain Projects to Extend Human Lifespan on: October 26, 2021, 03:25:27 PM
It looks to me like a private blockchain. And if it's private, a database may be much better suited.
If I'm wrong and it's not a private blockchain, then what would be the incentives for nodes and miners to store and protect this data?

Also if it's public blockchain, people may try to get access to protected data, from medical data to people's personal info.
And I don't really see the medical and pharmaceutic industries be just nice and share tremendous amounts of information "for the common good".

So while I'd love to be wrong and this project just go on and get to results, I see it as a money hog, using blockchain unnecessarily to just over-complicate things.
5495  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you think crypto will be the future for payments in space ? on: October 26, 2021, 03:14:05 PM
I think the concept of internet will need to be reinvented for interplanetary commerce to happen.

That's correct. Radio communication to Mars (5-20 min) is already slow and needs improved. 3.03-3.11 minutes for the speed of light is also not great.
Some Ansible-like device/technology has to be invented first. And for that we, humans, need to find out how to send information in a faster-than-light manner. Let's be kind and say that it's gonna take a while...  Wink
5496  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mastercard and Bakkt Verifone and BitPay on: October 26, 2021, 12:38:24 PM
Well, the banking system has the web or relations without which crypto businesses have difficulties getting in touch with fiat dependent businesses (i.e. most merchants for now).
So these partnerships are clearly a win-win situation (from businesses point of view, not necessarily for crypto and clearly not for users' privacy). And I agree with OP:

if it works well they are just going to fully take over the crypto businesses and absorb them

PS. Would I be allowed to post the raffle in the local board? Maybe in 29.10?
5498  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Custom USB miner on: October 26, 2021, 12:09:44 PM
I will not demand money from anyone. I will try to sell on an eBay-style site. So people can trust me with this way. Miner cost will be 100-150$ .

I advise you'd send some few first items to known and reputed miners, so they can prove that the miners actually mine as expected. This should grow your reputation.
Selling in batches and handling the funds through reputed escrows may also be a good idea, since you are newbie / nobody knows you yet.

Edit: if you sell on eBay or similar established store, then you can ignore my second line.

5500  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: private key import says no funds on: October 26, 2021, 09:41:14 AM
Hell yeah! It was there, thank you! It just didn’t show that it had balance on my private key list.
Managed to import the second address to another app, thanks a lot!:)

I'm glad I could help.

My advice is to:
1. save that private key safely for a while
2. create a new HD wallet (with a seed), preferably supporting SegWit (so with addresses starting with bc1 or 3) which will allow you smaller fees too
3. save the seed very safely
4. Transfer all your funds from the initial address at (point 1) to this new HD wallet.

If you don't do this, your wallet will always have only one address, which is not advised, especially because it somewhat hurts your privacy.
