5521  Other / Politics & Society / Re: No longer tin-hat conspiracy theory: FEMA Camps Everywhere on: December 12, 2011, 06:09:12 PM
Still a tin-hat conspiracy theory.

So what if FEMA is preparing "camps"?  What do all these conspiracy theorists think is going to happen?  The military suddenly puts everyone in the nation into camps?  Yeah, right.
5522  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mtgox auto-signs with a 437522 BTC wallet?!? on: December 12, 2011, 06:05:37 PM
Question: How do ANY of you know that that is the full amount deposited on MtGox?  You all keep talking as though this is the entire MtGox fund?  What if the cold storage is 1M or 2M BTC, and this is just the amount they like to keep on hand to fill withdrawal requests?
5523  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "The world is facing a major, major crisis." - Is Bitcoin ready? on: December 12, 2011, 06:02:02 PM
Yes.  Are people ready to be accountable for their own money? No. Too much personal responsibility.
Lack of responsibility only means they won't ever learn responsibility.  Responsibility must be given, and mistakes made, for responsibility to be learned.
5524  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTB] Lionel Trains - Post war to 1960-70 on: December 11, 2011, 06:18:56 PM
How can you know what time period they are from?  I have a set of mismatched trains, no idea if they're Lionel or what year though.
5525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Staff from PBC suggests taking control of bitcoin network. on: December 11, 2011, 09:22:25 AM
What was the context of the statement? Is that their official website?

It's a paper from <<Chinese Credit Card>> magzine,
the author is working for PBC,  low-level class officer.

http://www.cnki.com.cn/Article/CJFDTotal-XYKZ201110018.htm

@harvey

Yes, context is similar to taking paper from Microsoft Research as official statement of Microsoft's interest in bitcoin. Go ahead and tweet out a distorted news item, though.
Propagating false messages is much easier when the source material is Chinese. Any trumped up story you come up with may be cited and re-reported elsewhere.
It'll eventually turn into "Chinese Government Abhorred by Virtual Currency - Plans to Take it Over Within A Week"

Wow, this is really interesting.
5527  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 1saleaday.com is having a sale on 5870 on: December 10, 2011, 07:19:00 PM
1saleaday has been around for a long time.  It is a legitimate site that I found long before I knew about Bitcoins.  They have great deals, and I actually recently just bought (and received as advertised) something else from them.

If you have a legitimate reason to speak badly about the site, then by all means, bring it up.  But don't jump on the bandwagon just because a couple of other people have said something.
5528  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Introducing LoveBitcoins.org – Driving 1 MILLION Bitcoin Users in 2012 on: December 10, 2011, 01:54:17 AM
Because your leather wallet is a portable item you carry everywhere in your pocket.  Your digital wallet should offer the same convenience.

i had hoped for an argument, not a bad analogy  Undecided
imho focusing on mobile devices and especially local sales with QR-codes is pretty much a guarantee for failure. you need something like a dozen globally available, popular shops or services for bitcoin to really catch on or alternatively thousands or maybe even millions of local businesses. plus PCs and laptops are still extremly popular and will remain so, especially among the more tech-savvy crowd. you cant play games, program or do any other serious computer-related work on a phone. for the short and medium term, this will be your audience. i hope you dont try step 5 before step 3 and 4.

besides that, mobile phones are currently a security nightmare. bitcoin is a security nightmare by design. i think both have to improve before this explosive combination can really work.
I respectfully, and completely, disagree.  Mobile phones, and getting a smoothly working client running on them, should be a huge priority.  Smartphones are being carried around more and more, and not having a Bitcoin client available for them to use is cutting off a large crowd of people from using it.
5529  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] GEM - Invest in Diamonds!!! on: December 09, 2011, 06:53:31 PM
Yes, that is another way of breaking it down. If you were to cash in your share immediately, you would be buying 1pt diamonds for 1BTC each.

Wholesale pricing on 1pt diamonds is roughly $300-$450 depending on quality, etc. These are very nice and can easily fetch that price (I will have stats to accompany the pics) so the potential for turing them over and increasing the value of the fund is not unrealistic. The retail price for them is higher of course.

In the event that diamonds are sold/reinvested or if shareholders redeem their shares, I do have access to additional quantities to continue the offering and support the shares.

Even if the diamonds are strictly held, then the value of the shares in BTC should move based on the value of BTC.

I will also be adding a section to my website that will have all of the info I post here and additional information, stats, pics, etc.
Wait... so you are selling $300-$450 worth of diamonds for 1BTC each?  I don't mean to be accusatory, but how could this NOT be a scam?  How on earth can you buy them so cheaply that it makes it profitable for you to sell them for 1 BTC each?

Sucks, that was a lot of money.  Sad
5531  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What does it take to get a job around here? on: December 09, 2011, 08:42:59 AM
I thought that US state tuition was dirt cheap and that it was private colleges were making a fortune ?

In any case, does the US need lawyers more than it needs engineers.  The answer to your "What does it take to get a job around here?" is get a useful qualification.

As an example of what not to do, the first paragraph of this article is priceless: http://www.thenation.com/print/article/164348/audacity-occupy-wall-street
It is.  But there's still incredibly stupid young people out there that take out $100k student loans to get degrees in fields that will never have enough jobs.
5532  Economy / Marketplace / Re: SkepsiDyne Integrated Node - The Bitcoin Mining Company on: December 08, 2011, 11:56:37 PM

Last time I was on the Bitcoin police IRC channel, they laughed me off, told me that they don't really do anything there.  It was just for chatting/warning about disreputable members.

Thats a sad thing to hear, the last time I was there they were on beta stage development for some identity software and service that was going to allow people to attempt to prove who they were IRL. That was a service that was badly needed.
Yeah... have to say, my expectations were a bit off, if only for the name.  Why call it the "Bitcoin Police" channel when nothing of the sort is being done there?

I haven't been on there in a couple of months, and only visited once, so there may indeed be such a service in progress that just wasn't spoke of during my short stay there.  I've always thought a sort of "private detective" Bitcoin specialist would be a good service.  I don't have the skillset to create such a service or I would have already done so.
5533  Economy / Services / Re: Shades Minoco - A different type of mining company on: December 08, 2011, 05:44:43 PM
That is the reason why we are not expanding or taking in any more clients. At the end of the contracts, I will be selling the remainder of the hardware and close up shop. Keeping the equipment online in one place is just way to hard.

Payb.tc, like I said in our pms, I will call you either today or tomorrow. Also, you will get every btc you earned. Just because the hardware is off, does not mean I will not give you the coins you earned while we move.
So... no more mining company?
5534  Economy / Marketplace / Re: SkepsiDyne Integrated Node - The Bitcoin Mining Company on: December 08, 2011, 04:24:51 PM
boonies4u, GLBSE V.2 is going to be made available by the end of this year, it's going to be a huge improvement over what we have.

At the same time work is also being done on the current GLBSE web interface, it looks like we will have a facelift, functionality and usability improvements in about 2 weeks.

On Saturday live websocket streaming of GLBSE is going to begin.

I'm hoping for a resurection of GLBSE this years end.

Does anyone know whats happening with the Bitcoin Police (and can they be contacted for the DOX on tawsix?)and noagendamarket?

I've not been on the IRC channels since coming back. Oh by the way I'm in the UK now.

Nefario.

5535  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 64GB USB flash/thmb drive on: December 08, 2011, 03:54:34 AM
I did not know almost every thing in your last post Spike.  But as of yet I am holding with my current price of $60.  I just want to recoup as much as possible,  I hope you understand where I am coming from there.  I have always considered PNY to be a reputable company with quality products.  I have never purchased anything of PNY brand and have it DOA as it has happened with items on a very small list of not as highly regaurded company (products).  If anyone would like my to pop it in and test briefly please say something because as of now it is totally unused!
Completely understandable!  I don't blame you for holding at $60 - it's still a fair price.  Best of luck with the sale.  Smiley

5537  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Internet Archive (Home of the Wayback Machine) Accepting Bitcoin Donations! on: December 08, 2011, 12:28:59 AM
I will donate if it is placed on the archive.org donate page along with paypal, not just on a blog post only.  5 BTC pledged here.
Yeah.  I've learned to not trust people here by default.  It could be Obsi's address!  Be careful until they have something official on their website.

Not yet...
5539  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 64GB USB flash/thmb drive on: December 07, 2011, 10:06:46 PM
60MB/s theoretical.
31MB/s maximum from my Sata 6gb/s in a USB 2.0 dock.
My generic thumb drives get 4-8mb depending on file size.

I was saying USB 2.0 supports up to 60MB/s in its designed specifications.  I didn't see any specifications on what the drive supports. I thought I was clear in saying I did not know how fast the actual device will operate at.
USB 2.0 supports 480mbps, but that's counting speeds in both directions.  In practice, you get half that - 30 MB/s, since you're usually only reading or writing, not doing both at the same time.  I have never seen a USB 2.0 device transfer data faster than 32MB/s.

Also, for what it's worth, you CAN get a 64GB drive brand new from newegg for $60.  But, it's a Lexar, and I'd trust PNY over Lexar any day.  Still, you get a warranty by buying new.  Just throwing that out there.
5540  Bitcoin / Mining support / Miner keeps getting stuck on "Long poll" on: December 07, 2011, 07:44:11 PM
So I had a dedicating mining machine with a single 5850 in it that was recently repurposed as a desktop for my wife.  Ever since then, I've been having trouble keeping the miner running.  Using guiminer, and usually after 10-15 hours of running, it'll stop mining.  When I get back to it to reset it, in the status bar at the bottom, it'll say "Long poll: New block 00000x4930" or something like that.  Can't remember the exact text off the top of my head.

What could the problem be?
