5521  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trying to know more about crypto wallets on: February 20, 2022, 08:25:37 PM
1. Is there any proper place to keep your private keys?
Best option for keeping private keys or seed words is on piece of paper or metal plate, stored in multiple different geographical locations.
Multisig setup is best for security but it creates extra complexity and it's not for everyone, especially not for newbies.
You should never keep private keys on your every day computer in digital form or in some cloud account.

2. Do you have to keep your hardware wallet keys the same way as a mobile wallet or does a hardware wallet have better security features that mobile wallets don't have?
Hardware wallet keys are only stored OFFLINE in device secure element (if device have secure element) and on your backup paper written by your hand.
Some wallets don't have secure element like Trezor so it's recommended to use passphrase option for extra security.
You should never import seed words from hardware wallet to any mobile or online wallet.

3. Will you rather spend dollars on hardware wallet as a newbie than use a mobile wallet?
Mobile and hardware wallets are two different things, and they can often be used together for better security.
It's not needed to buy hardware wallet if you are newbie that don't have decent amount of coins to store, same way like you are not buying safe for gold if you don't have any gold plates.
For start if you can also use separate old offline computer only used for crypto wallets.
5522  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Ever have any issue with coinbase before? on: February 20, 2022, 08:09:28 PM
Is coinbase a reliable wallet? It's a centralised platform but someone told me he is been using this wallet since 2015 with no issue I don't just like the fact that I have no access to my recovery seed after reading a lot about not your keys not your asset online.
Centralized wallets are reliable until they are not reliable.
Coinbase exchange is the real owner of all coins, they are holding all coins with private keys, and they can block your account and freeze your coins if someone from government force them to do it.
You should hold coins and keys on non-custodial open source wallets, and you use exchange (decentralized Bisq is better) only when you are doing trading.
Good examples for reliable open source wallets are Electrum or Wasabi.

5523  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Writing down seed phrase: printer ink or pen ink ? on: February 19, 2022, 02:23:24 PM
I wouldn't worry about yellow dots on an old black and white laser printer, but more imporantly: the tracking is meant to track a printout to a certain printer. Printed seed phrases aren't meant to be shared, and even if someone would get their hands on it, they wouldn't be interested to know which printer you used. They would just take your money.
I don't worry about it because I don't use printed seed words, and i don't want invisible yellow dots anywhere on my forensically traceable papers.
Using passphrase with seed words would make job harder for anyone who wants to steal your coins, but they could identify computer and printer you used, with exact details about time, date and maybe IP address.
However, there are some printer models that apparently don't display tracking dots:
Quote
Some of the documents that we previously received through FOIA suggested that all major manufacturers of color laser printers entered a secret agreement with governments to ensure that the output of those printers is forensically traceable.
https://www.eff.org/pages/list-printers-which-do-or-do-not-display-tracking-dots

I prefer toner over ink.
I prefer hand and pencil over toner.
5524  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: DIY Bowser Hardware Wallet on: February 19, 2022, 01:28:11 PM
That's cool! I wanted to get an M5Stack anyway to play around with. A question about the secure chip: does the firmware actually recognize it is running on a M5 with secure chip & use it or is it not used? I mean, if it's not implemented, then having it on the PCB won't help.. Grin
M5Stacks are a great little devices and sometimes you can find them on discount deals for very cheap.
Secure element is used for sure and it should be recognized, if you watch the video on their product page you will see that it is used for encryption.
I never ordered this exact model so I didn't test it myself how it works in real life or as a hardware wallet, but you can contact their support team for more information.
I know that creator of Bowser wallet and LNURLPoS (arcbtc), is very active so you can also ask him if he can help you with this.

5525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Writing down seed phrase: printer ink or pen ink ? on: February 19, 2022, 01:09:56 PM
Don't buy a printer on Bitcointak, buy it on Craigslist. That makes a targeted attack much less likely.
You should know that most printers have coded tracking dots that prints invisible Machine Identification Codes with time, date and printer serial number on paper, with who knows what else to track what you print.
I would never want to use something like that for printing bitcoin seed phrase, and I don't agree with you that printer ink will last for centuries.
Long time I ago I remember printing some cd covers on my old printer and they all faded a lot, this could be because of cheap ink paint, but you get my point.

You may want to add actual source link here, before someone reports you for plagiarism Wink
This is crazy times to live in Canada, I could never imagine that co-founder of centralized exchange would ever suggest their customers to stop using exchange, withdraw coins from his exchange and cash out.
Nobody can protect them from crazy government, so it's time for people to mass switch to Bisq and other decentralized exchanges.
5527  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: BTC.com (wallet) shutting down on: February 19, 2022, 12:30:39 PM
I never used btc.com wallet and I didn't know this even exist, but I am wondering if this could be a sign of btc.com mining pool slowly shutting down their service.
We know they are based in China (and Singapore) but they reduced hashrate a lot in last several months so this could be something related with regulations.
One year ago they were in top five pools and they had more that double of hashrate they have now.
5528  Economy / Reputation / Re: Known Alts of any-one - A User Generated List Mk III (2022 Q1) on: February 19, 2022, 12:17:40 PM
Very strange behavior for a DT. One rewards this post with 11 merits. The second without checking puts a negative tag.
I didn't sent him 11 million merits and I didn't know I have to ask you or anyone else for permission when sending my merits.

really this post is worthy of 11 merits. Or is it a mistake?
I don't if it's worthy or not, but I think it's not worth tagging or asking me for explanation about my merit policy. Wink
I sent him some merits and I can not revert them, end of story.
5529  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏆 2022 OSCARS - Nominees, Odds and Predictions! on: February 18, 2022, 05:57:13 PM
Haven't seen this before, but I watched it earlier today, thanks for sharing. Its been quite a while since last time I heard about Liberland. I remember there was a lot of talk about it back in 2015 (IIRC) when it all started, but then people kinda stopped talking about it.
It's still very much active, but things are happening mostly in the background.
On the surface police forces are most active  Cheesy

Not necessarily. If you mainly  watch mainstream Hollywood movies that might be the case, but good movies are being made all over the world and its never been easier to get whatever you want. I could only dream of having this kind of access 20-25 years ago.
Maybe you remember the times when we had to go to video club to rent a vhs cassette and watch new movies, many time pirated bad copies, that reminds me on new Series called Pam & Tommy.
It's based on true story of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's relationship, their sex tape, Baywatch, first days of internet, etc... Actress Lily James looks and acts so much like Pamela it's crazy (don't watch this with your kids).
Back to the Oscar Rewards, do you know exact day for picking the winners?
5530  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor Shop now accepts Lightning Payments on: February 18, 2022, 12:26:18 PM
They published the same news on their twitter page without much fuss, maybe because they are using third party cryptocurrency payment gateway Confirmo.net.
Confirmo added support for Lightning Network last month, and they published their own LN public node.
I think they are also from Czech Republic like Trezor developers so they might be some connection between them.
5531  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Try this new crypto portfolio app on: February 18, 2022, 12:04:56 PM
Would you want to add one/many accounts and then optionally sign up via email later? Or do you mean a "test portfolio" where you can just check how the app feels and looks with some example investments, then when you login these test investments are gone?
I would be fine for start just testing how it looks and feels, something like demo account so there is no need for saving anything.
It would be great if there was some alternative way of of creating portfolio account without using email address, but that is a different story.
5532  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Time Machine - Mining bitcoin with Pentium processor on: February 18, 2022, 11:08:06 AM
Even many years later, it's funny that I happen to have a similar view now: I could easily see BTC above $100k in a few years, but I think we'll probably drop well below $30k for at least part of this year.
Anything is possible with Bitcoin in this crazy times we live now, but when in doubt I always like to zoom out and get better perspective.
Hal Finney early price calculation for BTC was $10,000,000 per one coin, so I guess we are all a bit bearish compared with that Wink

I probably still have the CPU somewhere. Taken out of context, my 2010 post makes it sound like I barely had any idea of what a CPU was since I just used the over-broad "Pentium" label, but in fact this was a gaming machine I'd built around 2008, and I chose the specific CPU carefully. It was far from the best CPU available in 2010, but it was probably in the top 5% of retail-oriented CPUs.
That means your processor was made by Intel, and I did some time travelling again about best processors from 2010.
Some say it was Intel Core i7 980X Extreme Edition or one of the Intel Xeon models, and they were fastest according to benchmark testing but also most expensive with prices around $1000  Shocked
Intel Pentium G6950 was the best budget CPU from 2010 that could be overclocked, and AMD Phenom was very good option price/performance wise back than, but I am not sure what CPU was better for Bitcoin mining.
Fast forward again to 2022 and Intel is now making new energy-efficient dedicated chips for Bitcoin mining, that should be much faster than anything we have so far.

5533  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum newbie question on: February 17, 2022, 04:55:38 PM
You can import the seed phrase generated using electrum into bluewallet too.
It should be mentioned that if there is no used address in the wallet, you can't import it into bluewallet. There is a requirement that the wallet must have received fund.
Have you tested if this is actually working, because I didn't and I uninstalled Blue wallet during AOPP mess?
Bluewallet by default supports BIP39 that can't be converted from electrum seed format, so I don't understand how they can make differentiate from imported BIP39 and Electrum seed words.
I see on their website they say we can import Electrum and Bread wallets, but on their github page there are some issues when using multisig:

5534  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's the best way to mix small amounts of Bitcoin? on: February 17, 2022, 04:13:17 PM
I recently bought about $150 USD worth of BTC and I would like to mix it. I was going to use Wasabi Wallet but it seems I don't have enough BTC to use CoinJoin. Can anyone recommend me a cheap way to safely mix my BTC?
I would also suggest using Chipmixer like other members suggested before me, and best if you do that on their .onion version with Tor browser, but please follow instructions.
Wasabi wallet is currently unusable for Coinjoin amounts lower than 0.1 BTC but they are working on version 2.0 that is going to remove that limit.
I think Wasabi is releasing testnet version next month and after that mainnet version should be released, but this still needs to be tested.
Alternative for mixing your coins is using decentralized exchanges like Bisq and p2p trading.
5535  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Writing down seed phrase: printer ink or pen ink ? on: February 17, 2022, 03:33:17 PM
I would like to write down my seed phrase but I am hesitating between writing it on a sheet with a pen or typing it on my notepad app on my computer and print it ?
Which one will last longer ?
Writing seed words on piece of paper is always a better option than keeping digital copy, but if you really want something that will last for a long time use metal plates.
I don't trust printer ink is going to be good enough because it can use cheap ink color and that can fade fairly quickly like those receipt bills.
Metal plates should be from stainless steel or you can make cheap DIY version of backup using washers you can buy in your local store, here is one example with instructions for Securing a Bitcoin seed phrase in stainless-steel washers.
5536  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus on: February 17, 2022, 03:10:17 PM
They seem to be throwing a lot of money on marketing campaigns right now.
Two days ago they announced a campaign with Hublot, and it will be possible to purchase 50 limited-edition watches. A Nano X is also part of the deal. Roll Eyes
Yeah I saw that shit, first Paris Hilton, cringe music videos, Lebron James and now Hublot watches ''special edition'', all of that has nothing to do with bitcoin and hardware wallets.
Meanwhile, their reddit channel is full complains like this example when brand new nono x devices go crazy when plugged in with usb cable...
Ledger support suggests draining the battery (bat-pandemic is very much alive) but it's obviously not working... watch the video below:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/su0cs9/faulty_brand_new_nanox_goes_crazy_when_plugged/

Here is one more ledger device having party time after being connected with cable into computer or phone:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/ssqv5k/strange_behavior_when_plugged_into_a_computer_or/

I can't believe they are advertising something that is full of problems like this, and checking their twitter profile page looks more like a page of some prostitute... no offence prostitutes.
5537  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: QR codes vs NFC in Bitcoin Wallets on: February 17, 2022, 02:49:10 PM
Please stay vigilant about the 'open source = secure' fallacy. Especially that QRworkshop which has been abandoned almost a decade ago; I wouldn't trust that over what's built into Electrum without thoroughly reading all the code myself (which I have little to no time for).
I am not trusting QRworkshop or any other software that has open source label and I know it wasn't updated for a long time, I just posted it as only option I know for windows os.
Don't trust me and my words but go and check last github releasel of this program from 2014, or find something better for windows.
Electrum wallet is fine but we all remember phishing attacks they had with update notifications, so scammers could make something similar with QR codes again.

I found one article talking about history of NFC technology that was first created back in 2003 by Philips and Sony, and promoted by both of them and Nokia in 2004 (something I didn't know).
Today we have several manufacturers who are making NFC chips, and we know some of them are also making secure elements used in hardware wallets, or in mobile devices:

- NXP Semiconductors
- STMicroelectronics
- Infineon Technologies
- Samsung
- Texas Instruments
- Marvell Technology
- Broadcom
- Qualcomm
- MediaTek
- Intel
- Sony
- Ams
- Renesas
- MStar Semi
5538  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum newbie question on: February 17, 2022, 02:18:56 PM
I mean I received x times several bitcoins on the same electrum wallet and I had to create new adresses each time in order to receive the bitcoins (that's why I have several reception addresses for the same wallet).
But I guess with the seed I will recover the whole wallet.
You didn't have to create new address each time to receive bitcoin, but doing that is actually better for privacy if you don't send all coins together again.
When you want to send your bitcoin next time, go to Addresses tab, choose one you want and then right click with Spend from option.
Seed words will recover all your addresses, but only Electrum wallet is supported if you generated seed words in Electrum.
5539  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Time Machine - Mining bitcoin with Pentium processor on: February 17, 2022, 01:56:10 PM
I think we need to think the other way around. Instead of regretting not being able to send a message to our young self from ten years ago, we should consider what our old self would want to share with us ten years into the future. We might hear our messages from the future if we concentrate enough. Are you guys hearing anything?
I don't have any regrets about this and I would probably sold most of mined bitcoins back than and buy some stupid new gadget, or spend it on some vacation trip.
Than years later I would tell stories around camp fire to my friends how I had a bunch of bitcoins that I spent without thinking.
I just love Back to the future movies... what can I say.

Probably yes, mentioning that time around 2010 owning a computer is a lot considering it's expensive, at least in my place when you have a computer and internet connection, mean you have the resources and money.
Many people could afford computer in 2010 without a problem, maybe not exact Pentium model owned by theymos Cheesy, but perfectly working computer that could mine bitcoin with good internet connection.
I still remember the days of dial-up connection, so anything faster than this was a blessing.

I actually measured the energy usage with a Kill-A-Watt with and without mining a few months after that post, and I was getting 160 BTC/kWh. Because the cost of mining 1 BTC was less than a tenth of what 1 BTC was actually priced at at the time, I thought that BTC was substantially overpriced, and so I also have the honor of selling BTC at the lowest prices ever recorded, $0.003/BTC. Smiley
I think we can all agree that nobody should trust your Bitcoin price predictions  Cheesy
btw what happened with that Pentium processor? Is it collecting dust in you old basement or you sold that as well?
5540  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Time Machine - Mining bitcoin with Pentium processor on: February 16, 2022, 09:04:13 PM
Not sure what's the best way to celebrate it other than altering the personal text field on my profile.
It looks like I am still time traveling as we speak so mistakes are possible, but I couldn't reach 2010 and speak to my old self with instructions to mine (or buy) Bitcoin Tongue
Thanks for correction.
