5521  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [NEWS] Butterfly Labs - Shut Down by US Government on: September 23, 2014, 07:37:57 PM
Still just an employee. As much as I'd like for Josh to put on his big boy orange jumpsuit, he appears to have no ownership in the company and thus his liability is minimal. Fancy title means little. He had no authority to do anything.

Since part of the fraud revolves around intentionally delaying the delivery of hardware, his role at BFL would put him smack in the middle of things despite the fact that he doesn't own the company.

I think it would boil down to:

1.) Were there really delays in manufacturing the Monarch?
2.) When he made the public statements about delivery times, was he intentionally misleading customers?

The inability to deliver useful hardware in the stated time-frame would rest at the feet of the person in charge of such things, which would be Josh methinks.  That would put Josh's role in the center of the fraud.

I like the way you think.  Wink

"VP Product Development" sounds like a bit more than "just an employee".  In fact, isn't a severe failure of Product Development precisely the reason the company is now in this mess?

Yep, the news is everywhere now and you heard it here first.
5524  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [NEWS] Butterfly Labs - Shut Down by US Government on: September 23, 2014, 07:23:57 PM
Aww, it's too bad that Josh is just an employee. I'd sure love to hear about him being raped is prison.

What a happy idea. We can only hope. Let's take up bounty for any inmate or guard that snaps a pic of Josh bent over a prison cot.

Not crossed 450$. I'm calling it- bulltrap and short squeeze.

This is not paypal integration per se but something much much less. Comparable with that braintree news?

But people will buy on the news after pump as usual so we will not see below 400$ for a while.  Sad

We'll be at 500 by the weekend.
5526  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 23, 2014, 07:14:27 PM
BFL is finally gonna take it up the ass. That and the PayPal announcement=

As happy as i am that BFL is fucked it isn't good for Bitcoin. Just imagine the news and how people react to it. Another "bitcoin company" who screwed everyone over. More ammo for the haters how Bitcoin is evil.

Nonsense! People will see their is motivation for Bitcoin businesses to be reputable because they are not above the law. It is just as possible for all of the prosecutions to be positive. It's much worse to see businesses get away with constantly screwing people.

http://coinfire.cf/2014/09/23/official-ftc-complaint-butterfly-labs-obtained/

Relevant links. BFL and AMT have VERY similar circumstances and it appears that the FTC and federal government is starting to take action to address these  shady vendors. Law enforcement in various jurisdictions are also apparently showing an interest in this matter. It is important that we continue to press on as and contact law enforcement both local and federal until we get results. Joshua Zipkin pulled the same trick as BFL with delaying the launch of hardware.

From all appearances it seemed he had the China miners up for quite a while at least a month mining before even shipping them (I have pulled logs from a machine that has logs to show the machines operation time which is something that cannot be forged or falsified). While cgminer has no logs, the linux system does and gives quite a bit of insight into how long the machine was running, uptime and all that. This will vary with individual miners, but I imagine the variation will be minimal but consistent. Anyone who got the original image with their miner or created a backup will notice this if you have the Linux skills to look at it.

At any rate AMT is also in a much more damned position as there is far more evidence here including things said by the CEO to use to prove their fraudulently criminal behavior. I do hope that there is jailtime for Joshua Zipkin and his co-conspirators as well in all this. BFL has gone down and they were the big fish in all this. AMT is a relatively small fry but a notable one. These scammers are falling like dominos.

But didn't he move to afscamistan or somewhere he can't be prosecuted?
5529  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is the government going to copy bitcoin and leave us high and dry ? on: September 23, 2014, 06:44:39 PM
LOL why would "the government" do this?

They already did do it and it already failed.

http://developer.mintchipchallenge.com

Yeah, hmm.  To clarify, I was assuming the high and dry part would mean that it would be a multi-departmental initiative on the level of the Moon landing.  If Canada or USA Financial department wants to release it as a pet project, it will surely fail.  If it is an executive order or legislative act, then that would be an entirely different thing.  My question was to that:  Why?

Why did they do MintChip? Beats the hell out of me.

I'm not really clear on why governments do most things but I bet most of it is for self preservation.

5533  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is Money? (and does bitcoin fit the criteria?) on: September 23, 2014, 01:25:16 PM
4) It needs to have the same value everywhere it's used. If you used real estate the values would change by location. 2.5 dunams of land in Tel Aviv is not the same as 2.5 dunams in Jaffa.
Consistent value is a derived property which follows from portability. Anything which is liquid and which can be easily teleported anywhere, without technical or regulatory complications, will have the same value everywhere (though it might be hard to see, as the other things which you would buy with it can have different values).

Real estate is an extreme case which has 0 portability. So much so that I'd say it becomes an issue of fungibility. 2.5 dunams of land in Tel Aviv is a fundamentally different thing than 2.5 dunams of land in Jaffa. There is no interchangeable unit "dunam of land", in the same way that an apple is an apple wherever it is.

Yes, that's all I meant. It is an extreme example but still fundamentally different from just portability and fungibility. You can make land portable with deeds of sale. You could attempt to make it fungible by classifying land as "fertile growing land", "fishing waterfront", "ocean view" etc. but there is no way for a deed to show if a mentally unstable neighbor is building bombs across the street.
5534  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is Money? (and does bitcoin fit the criteria?) on: September 23, 2014, 01:03:07 PM
(3) It must be relatively convenient at least for everyday purchases, which is why we don’t use lead or copper.
"Convenient" isn't a fundamental property, it's something that follows from the other required properties, such as portability, divisibility and fungibility.

(4) It must be consistent, which is why we don’t use real estate.
What do you mean by that?

(5) It must possess value in itself, which is why we don’t use common rocks.
No, money does not need to have value beyond the value it gains by virtue of being a commonly used currency. If a thing satisfies all the requirements for good money, and is therefore used extensively as money, it will automatically gain value.

3) By convenient I mean portable. We could use lead but carrying a dollars worth would be a little inconvenient.

4) It needs to have the same value everywhere it's used. If you used real estate the values would change by location. 2.5 dunams of land in Tel Aviv is not the same as 2.5 dunams in Jaffa.

5) Money, in my view, should have some value other than just pieces of paper. Of course money doesn't "need" to have any other value. It only needs to be recognized as a medium of valuable exchange. That's why my government and yours can pass off these little pieces of toilet paper to us and call it money. In the wake of any government financial collapse the people holding gold will still have something of value somewhere in the world. That could be true of Bitcoin someday. If Namecoin really took off the Bitcoin system would have a value besides the exchange value of the Bitcoin itself.
5535  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is Money? (and does bitcoin fit the criteria?) on: September 23, 2014, 01:03:32 AM
You forgot a few:

(1) It must be durable, which is why we don’t use wheat or corn or rice.

(2) It must be divisible, which is why we don’t use art work.

(3) It must be relatively convenient at least for everyday purchases, which is why we don’t use lead or copper.

(4) It must be consistent, which is why we don’t use real estate.

(5) It must possess value in itself, which is why we don’t use common rocks.

(6) It must be limited in the quantity that is available, which is why we don’t use aluminum or iron.

(7) It should have a long history of acceptance, which is why we don’t use molybdenum or rhodium.

(8 It must be fungible, which is why we don’t use shoes, clothes or any unique item.

Only GOLD and SILVER fit all eight characteristics.
5536  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin craze dying down? on: September 23, 2014, 12:25:16 AM
this time last year bitcoin went from $90 down to $70 and people were shouting that bitcoin craze was dying out.. then as october approached it went above $100, and then up up up.

you want to know why september-october is so important..

think about these three countries
thailand, costa rica, america.. then click this link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiscal_year#Chart_of_various_fiscal_years

if your old enough to actually bother paying tax, then you will know

So this time last year the low was $70.
This year the low is $400
What will the low be at this time next year?

I'm guessing two thousand plus or minus ten percent.
This is true based on prior experience. However past performance does not guarantee future results. Also eventually the "law of large numbers" will need to kick in to slow the rate at which bitcoin can continue to increase in value

It may take about 50 years for the law of large numbers to kick in. Take credit card adoption as an example. Western Union began issuing charge cards to its frequent customers in 1921. Mass adoption happened about the time Visa replaced BankAmericard. BankAmericard became the first successful recognizably modern credit card with overseas affiliates, in 1977 changed its name to Visa.

5538  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 1933 bank holiday on: September 22, 2014, 06:39:20 PM
http://www.newyorkfed.org/research/epr/09v15n1/0907silb.pdf documents an amazing thing back in 1933.  People listen to President Roosevelt and actually went to make deposits after the bank holiday.  Those days are gone, right?  Nothing like that could happen again.

Can funding government operations via debasing the national currency as opposed to taxes, etc., actually be a sustainable approach?  Is inflation *always* the consequence eventually?

No, that can't happen anymore because Americans no longer trust their president or respect their political system. Patriotism in the form that existed in the 1930s is gone. That should answer your second question also. Military, police and threats are controlling the people now. Fear of government reprisals (jail or fines) are all that's left and the IRS is a major fear point. Yes, price level inflation is a symptom of the decay of the American system. It's worst attribute is cost push inflation which happens continuously as employees demand higher incomes to keep up with price increases which causes greater inflation.

You should really say something about Bitcoin or post these questions in politics or off topic.
5539  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is going to die?? on: September 22, 2014, 06:11:05 PM
Well, look at it this way. A financial collapse of catastrophic proportions will happen in our lifetimes. When this happens, and it WILL happen, BTC will rocket to the moon. So one could argue that BTC is a guaranteed investment to yield huge returns. Just how long you have to wait is the question. And i'm not talking about BTC price increasing as a result of of the devaulaton of the $.

I agree.  I am buying when I can and holding on to them long term.

My goal is at least 20 and preferably 100...

(by the way, what does HODL mean?  I have seen it used on this forum.  HOLD I assume?)

Hodling

5540  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the top places of Bitcoin discussion ? on: September 22, 2014, 02:58:55 PM
Cryptocrypt.org, but you need an invite.

It's stacked with some influential people.

It's hardly a top place for discussion and it's not a Bitcoin forum. Goat is and always has been a complete nut job and has been involved in some pretty good scams. His offerings on GLBSE and the pirate pass through are enough to keep me from ever trading with him. I don't understand some of the people that chose to go there but I especially don't understand Tysat having anything to do with it. I'm sure gweedo fits right in though. I think I'll pass on a forum on a goat on a boat. lol
