In some places in the world 6 BTC in a month is a very good salary. Is this going to be setting a precedent? Will another 6 BTC be required for development next month etc etc.

I am not saying that you (the developer) are not doing great work with Bitmark, but I do think this is potentially a dangerous path. Should the reward not be in the projects success?

The rewards will be in the projects success, this has been my own approach to the project since inception, and why I was so firmly against IPO/premine etcetera.

Bitmark and it's projects are only possible if my personal balance at home is correct. I find myself in a position where to keep up with Bitmark's momentum and demand at this crucial time means sacrificing the balance, which is not physically possible.

I see this as a one off, because a community is forming who will help maintain balance as the project matures, allowing me to step back a little and restore the balance of Bitmark / Work / Life.

Think of it as a 'kick start' to the project, after one month of showing the potential and lots of hard work. We are not in a speculative IPO position, we have a solid project with lots of valuable interest. I am prepared to put everything I have in to this permanently, earn it's value, but for now, for a short period of time, I need some financial help to solidify what we are doing here.

The proposal came about after I raised the subject with the community, I always promised I would be transparent if there were ever any issues with Bitmark which affected me personally. Here I am doing that, after consulting with the community as to what was the most reasonable risk limiting approach.

"snapshot support. Devices will never need more than 1 GB of storage or RAM to run full client"

Did you read the post about 500 thin clients rather than one bulky full client? Smiley

Ideally we would all have the resources to be able to focus all of our attention singularly on Bitmark but in reality with living expenses it's generally not going to be possible with out some method of sustaining oneself.

Coinsolidation/Mark has been working like crazy since this idea was born and I don't think he's had much time for much else. Since there is no IPO or no premine that can be sold off the alternative is development funded by donation, or in this case crowdfunded projects that are separate from Bitmark but still add significant value to the project.

This is an issue we've been debating for a long time now, how to ensure sustainable development and proper incentive. Projects like this should pay for themselves many times over, but it's an investment in both Bitmark and an what is basically an open source startup. People will also be able the take to project and expand its scope as an internet value transfer system outside(but still connected to) Bitmark. But that comes after.

Exactly, we have solved 99% of the problem, the only thing that was never addressed was a fair way to support the developer in the first year at times when a concerted effort is needed.

What is being discussed is the proposal to do that. I live in Europe and have a family, I wish the economic costs of supporting them were lower, but they are not. The amount being discussed subsidises what I would otherwise be making by working for a few weeks, I cannot do both, I have been trying that for weeks.

As an added incentive and show of good will, I would be prepared to send all of the Bitmarks I own 421.67310715 BTM to the first reasonable investor, to be sent back after GetMarked is launched. That way I am putting my full stake in Bitmark on the line, and can only earn it back.

Simply, I am just trying to do some hard work on a project people want to see happen.

Definition of 'Get Marked'
GetMarked is a distributed reputation system, like karma which follows people around the web.

It is something simple which your friends and family can use.

Reputation is given by the process of 'Marking' giving someone a mark for something they have created or shared.

It's implementation and usage is similar to clicking Facebook's 'Like' button, no complicated crypto currency client to be seen.

Reputation systems such as scores, karma, and likes have proven successful, Marks follow people around the web, and also real life.

The novel part is that they are backed by currency, they are literally currency as '1 Mark' is '0.001 Bitmark'.

The more the marking system is used the higher the value of each single mark.

This adds a layer of competition and incentivization for users, they will compete for marks and watch the value rise. Natural milestones exist, to get 1000 Marks, and later 100, adoption milestones where a mark is worth a cent, then ten.

Eventually marking something could be synonymous with paying for something. Marks are to be earned, each mark earned by an individual adds value to all.

Consider marks to be spendable karma, an amusing post on a social network could pay for your coffee, marking a video of the crisis in syria could pay for aid on the ground, marking an article about a mistreated animal could pay for it's shelter, and marking this idea could pay for it's creation.

GetMarked also acts as a faucet. 1,000,000 Marks will be distributed by it to each new user.

Additional marks to send can be acquired by people depositing them from the block chain.

Each users reputation is the sum of all Marks they have been sent.

Their available balance to give as marks to others, to withdraw, or to spend is the balance of inputs they have been given minus any marks they have sent.

The GetMarked system is to be royalty free and open source. It also provides everything needed for services to integrate with GetMarked or Bitmark.

In this manner we can both rapidly grow adoption, stabilize our libraries for services to adopt, and begin the thought process of users considering marks as something to be earned, something with value.

For the most recent incarnation of the specification see Get Marked on the github wiki

There is an 8 BTC investment opportunity in GetMarked and Bitmark, which will enable me to keep up with our earned momentum for a month or more, pay for resources required, and provide a fair amount of Bitmarks to any investors, whilst reasonably securing their investment.

If any one has interest do speak up.

 of course Wink

deadline?

No deadline to secure the full 8 BTC. As soon as any one makes the first part investment I can immediately give Bitmark/GetMarked my full attention, and restore some much missed time with my family.

An alternative way of looking at it is, if I can secure enough for the first few days, GetMarked can be created to a point that showcases the concept and also Bitmark, to such an extent that the remaining investment flows in. Earn it.

Bitmark will thrive by having businesses grow out of, and having value, because of its value.

I think it's great! To sow the seeds and nuture a business, an idea, an organisation, that others perceive to be of sufficient 'worth' to consider (so soon) potential off-shoot businesses / services - is this not a great compliment?!

Forwards >>> ! Grin

To have people already planning new businesses and organizations on the back of GetMarked, which is just a single part of Project Bitmark, will surely enhance the value proposition to both users and existing businesses alike.

Things are moving fast on this little thread.

I am sorry to do this but I must bring this back up:

I started defining an unnamed project on this thread exactly 1 month ago today. What is achievable in a single month is clear to see.
To do the same thing for GetMarked and have it adopted and being actively used by non crypto web citizens can be achieved by this date next month.

To balance my families needs, paid work, and bitmark is nearly impossible. To balance all of that and getmarked is impossible.
If I can replace the paid work for clients with a funding/investment to create getmarked, then balance is restored and even more than the last month is achievable.
6 BTC would cover my families needs, all project resources, enable some tips to those helping.
2 BTC would provide a reasonable amount of BTM as investment to those who invested.

After a month we would have bitmark a month more mature, and getmarked beginning to be adopted and used.

The work on bitmark and getmarked will continue with or without this, I do not want to loose our momentum or burn out.

Any future adoption focused side projects would be proposed by me or others, and considered at that time. Some may take a few hours, or some a few weeks, many will fall out naturally and with no cost incurred, others may need some financial commitment in order to be completed.

Taking this transparent approach is fairer, less expensive, less risk, and more guaranteed than anything like IPO, as if getmarked is not of merit and does not earn value then any subsequent proposal would be rejected by any potential investors.

I look forward to our status in one years time, for then the bitmark foundation will cover funding for anything the community decides is worth doing.

Here is a redacted private message relevant to GetMarked.

I know you aren't too concerned about country code top-level domains but I have registered:  getbitmark.co.uk.

If you ever wish to use the domain (Or you wish for me to point it anywhere) let me know.

Take Care

Thank you, you can also use it.

As getmarked progresses it may be a business for multiple people, probably people who have claimed a stake in bitmark or getmarked early. As businesses expand they need some geographical targeting and management. If it was of interest to you then you may have just registered the domain for the UK branch of a future getmarked organization.

Bitmark cannot manage it, it can create it, support it's growth through the bitmark foundation, but there will come a time when others need to focus on it exclusively.

That makes sense I think!?

Mark

Others may have an opinion on this.

GPU miners can't mine it fairly, it's impossible, arguments there in wiki ain't make GPU owners to mine it. Lots of Titans will land on this coin and in a week expect incredible difficulty. You have to make it at least scrypt-n, so home miners can win several months. This is it. Good luck.

GPU miners can mine Bitmark fairly, you will receive an amount of BTM according to how much hashrate you commit to securing the networking for it's users.

Mining is a service offered, not a money printing machine. If you offer a less efficient service that is not as beneficial to the users then your service will not generate as much revenue.

Technology progresses over time, GPU miners made CPU miners redundant, ASICs make GPUs redundant. You keep up or you fall behind.

I am the developer, I do not have an asic, I cannot mine the coin I created. When I can I will buy an asic to do so, and if I want to sooner I will hire one, or later buy some BTM, but that is speculation on my part.

My service is not mining, my service is developing. If your service is mining then treat it as a business and upgrade your hardware, or target your service at people who require gpu hashing to secure their network.

Bitmark's focus is on it's users, the decision to use scrypt is in their best interests, to keep their network reliable and secure.
567  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: July 22, 2014, 10:25:35 AM
Quite simply that - I have registered mymarks.org

This is good news, we have our first third party service being planned before getmarked is even created!

I m not a miner.. How could I buy some coin just to be part of the project? Are u thinking about a crowd fund giving coins to the investors? thanks for the reply

Yes, you may either rent a miner, ask someone with coins to sell them, or here is the current crowd funding proposal:

We do need to work on Budget Proposals for the different facets of Bitmark. In addition, how much BTC is required to register the domain? I will contribute what I can, just let me know what the minimum requirements are.

This is an issue which is quickly having an impact on me personally. Bitmark was started with the intention of balancing my time between Bitmark, a small amount of paid work, and family life over the first year.
Bitmark has grown much quicker and faster than I anticipated and the other two are suffering badly as a consequence.
Momentum on this project feels very important to maintain.

I have discussed this in IRC and something has been proposed.

Keep the main channel of bitmark development and support under the model of unpaid work which earns value over time, things like Bitmark, Pfennig, IPM Pool, electrum client, block chain explorers and so on.
Crowd fund side projects such as 'GetMarked' which focus on adoption.
This allows me to work on bitmark full time over the first year, covers resource requirements, and caters for anybody else who wants to join the specific side project.
The crowd funding allows us to gauge whether a side project is worth doing.
Achieving the budget allows us to put full effort in to the rapid development of the specific side project.
A portion of the budget (20%) would be used to mine bitmarks and distribute them to the funders.
The side project itself would increase adoption, earn value for bitmark, and remunerate those funding by the BTM they hold.

As a practical example, 8 BTC could ensure GetMarked's success, 6 BTC would cover all of my time for a full month, allow for budget of resources, and allow to tip the people who help. The 2 BTC would generate roughly 16,000 BTM to distribute to funders.

As Bitmark grows, this approach could be used for each adoption based side project whether it is me leading it or another community member, and until such a time that the Bitmark Foundation pays for all these things with BTM directly.

I would appreciate any feedback that can be given, Bitmark progress could be far more rapid than it currently is if basic budgeting constraints were not an issue.

Some users expressed this as a worry before Bitmark began, and tried to convince me to do an IPO, even pledging large amounts to it. I refused the offer, and would do the same again. This perhaps feels more balanced, and earned.

I didn't find information about what algo this coin uses.

Our Proof of Work is Scrypt

Somebody mentioned a 'market cap' earlier, we have no market.

A measurement is the production cost, we can calculate the cost to produce 1 BTM at any given period of time, then use this to calculate a 'production cap' and an average production price for each bitmark.

I have calculated this with a quick script http://bitmark.co/production.txt

Code:

The exact figures are unknown as every hashing device has a different cost, and many people use rented mining rigs. This is a reasonable measurement.

This calculation can be used on any currency, it would be interesting to apply it to some other currencies and cross reference it the market price Smiley

Update: getbitmark.org has been donated to the project!

Just skimmed over the text so please be clement if i miss something.

We talk about ~100 BTC (8x12) for first year?

As a practical example, 8 BTC could ensure GetMarked's success, 6 BTC would cover all of my time for a full month, allow for budget of resources, and allow to tip the people who help. The 2 BTC would generate roughly 16,000 BTM to distribute to funders.

No, only 1x.

You could use Bitcoin crowdfunding services like https://bitcoinstarter.com/ or http://coinfunder.com/browse or even both of them for that purpose Smiley
That would also attract more attention to Bitmark itself.

I wholeheartedly agree, to reach out to other communities and bring people in is always our primary goal.

We do not want to become a community of people swapping money between ourselves, it is clear where that ends up.

To bring in one potential adopter or somebody to the discussion, that is as more valuable than any funding could be.

OK, well then lets move in this direction. I agree that Crowdfunding Bitmark's Side Projects will provide a good metric by which to gauge public interest.

We could also consider RocketHub.com.
- Funds donated through RocketHub are given to the project, regardless if the project meets its monetary goals.
- Also noteworthy, RocketHub's new partnership with A&E could potentially magnify Bitmarks exposure outside of the crypto community. (This appears to be inline with Bitmarks long term Strategic Vision)

Rockethub.com is very good, it is a shame we do not have an active crypto equivalent. We should put that on our list of side projects, focussed at the same user base, they can pay with fiat and the project can receive bitmarks. The Bitmark Foundation could also sponsor projects which it felt had merit, or give them what is needed to reach their target.

For now I feel we are too immature, the work we would have to do on Bitmark's website, presentation, documentation, and community would be more than to create a working version of GetMarked.

This thread is interesting if you are following it yet fractured and expensive to read if you are not, this serves us well on the forum.
To bring new people from something as pleasant, modern, and creative as rockethub to a thread in the alternative coins section of bitcointalk is not the first impression we want to give.

If you would bold and state it that for example 20-30% of donator fund would be used for mining Bitmark and he/she would get them in return then it wouldn't be just a fund, but also an investment.

Yes, it is an investment, as the creation of getmarked will enable adoption which eclipse's that of all cryptographic currencies combined.

As an immediate starting point
- can anybody donate the domain name getmarked.org (or funds to buy it) to the project?
- I will create a one page website which coherently lays out the concept in an easy way

Doing this will enable us to refine and present the idea simply, the concept and impact need to be made clear.

This perhaps feels more balanced, and earned.

also ensure you have downloaded the blockchain and it is up to date.

how does one verify that with bitcoind?

getinfo also
check the block number corresponds to that you see on blockchain.info

bitmark.co is registered.
bitmark.foundation is registered.
a domain for getmarked is not yet registered, we will need to find the budget as bitmark has none.

I am comfortable discussing domains publicly for now. We move fast on this thread, by the end of the day we may have the domain bought, hosted, and being developed.
Thank you for your words of warning, I am aware of the practises of the domain name industry, let us not worry, open discussion to find the right one is more important.

The GetMarked thing is something we should put some efforts right away. It's not only a good idea - it's 'just' the future of crypto... I've watched some talks by cryptocurrency gurus (and other scientists that are doing investigation about this matter) and what comes to attention regarding the adoption of digital money is: "trust and credibility", "focused on/supervised by the community", "more then call it 'money' it should be known as a reward system".

'you click something; you do something = you get marked => you are rewarded'. Nowadays, that's how things get value, presence, relevance. The more badges, likes, subs, marks you have more popular and relevant you are - That's how it already works everywhere. So what's been missing? Imo, what's been missing is the acknowlegment of the importance of this method of adoption. And implement it.

Another thing is, this will ease the marketing of the coin. It's much more easy to make people to adopt a reward system then to 'sell' the idea of use a new crypto currency. Much more!

(There are some other communities working on this aswel. So lets jump on asap.)

It is good that we have a shared understanding of the fundamental parts so early on, this bodes well.

Today I will write what I feel has been discussed, as a starting point for us all to adapt and agree.

GetMarked is only one string in our bow, it will be taking shape by the end of the week and ready to test and play with soon after. We are fortunate that we can move quickly with very little 'noise', we have the term 'Mark' as a unit of currency, our foundation is balanced in all respects, and we have many people who want to join in.
576  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Bitmark on: July 21, 2014, 06:58:56 AM
IPM Clarifications
IPM doesn't define Bitmark, it's entirely optional.
The only goal of it is to balance the interests of people through the growth period over the first year or so, we expect it to naturally phase out as investor-miners either hold or move to being miners.
Over time we expect it to be used on an as needed basis, where if the network comes under attack investors can show a vote of confidence by stabilizing the network, securing their investment, and acquiring some more bitmarks fairly in the process.
There is a hard cap on the donation to the Bitmark Foundation, the goal is a total of 70,000 BTM, 0.250% of the total supply to be minted.

Put another way, IPM is a way of managing the crypto community over the first year. It allows us to get the usual issues out of the way to concentrate on adoption.

Is it possible that there is a bot that crawls the web to find domain names that are not registered and register them? Seems plausible.

getmarked.org

Yes, I actually created one for a contract some years ago.

getmarked.org, how did I miss that? I am happy with that, perfect in fact. Thank you.

1. The blockchain on the computer will be larger than the cloud storage offered
2. It's a P2P program, the blockchain is the decentralized storage (cloud), or should be.
3. Why is this a currency?
4. Why do you have shiny graphics and the logo of an exchange but no specification?
5. Why are you trying to pass off owncloud (https://github.com/owncloud/apps) as being your own work and having anything to do with cryptographic currency or blockchain?

The simpler and easier it is, the more people invest to build on it.

I cannot improve on that answer, I have tried to say it before, although it took me a page and you a few words.

Do you mind if I quote you in order to add clarity?

Absolutely not. Smiley Feel free. Reading your essay now.  Tongue

Edit: Wow, reading through Bitmark now. Impressive stuff.

579  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is it possible to recover an encrypted corrupt wallet if I have the passphrase? on: July 21, 2014, 04:50:08 AM
Code:
Program version 4.8 doesn't match environment version 5.3

It looks like the wallet was created (or modified) with a version of bitcoin that was built to use berkeley 5.3, and you are trying to salvage it using the built in 4.8

What can I do to get a newer version of Berkeley? I've never heard of this before. And why would the latest version of core have an older version than one from a year ago?

If you are on linux, and say building from source, then the default berkeley is 5.3 for the operating system, and bitcoin uses 4.8 in the compiled executables.

I do not know if this applies to you, but it may well be the problem.

Before proceeding I would like to take the time to thank eThought for his service, we have found it to be very fair and stable, the miners and I are very happy. If this were ebay I would write "a+++++++++ top service!".

eThought, I have been studying the hashrate graph over several days, and I feel it would be nice to tweak the network hashrate display.

When you call 'getnetworkhashps' on the daemon it can take two parameters which are 'blocks' and 'height'.

Whilst many may think hashrate is measured, it is actually just an estimate from the average times of the last [number] blocks, similar to how difficulty is calculated.

The default 'blocks' parameter is 120, in Bitmark's case that is a 2 hour sample. What I have found is that large changes in network hashrate take a very long time to filter through to getnetworkhashps, it can take an hour or more to reflect an addition of 30% to the network hashrate.

So, would it be possible for you to play with that number, to see how it reflects on the chart?
