5701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Brazilian mayor to reportedly invest 1% of city funds in Bitcoin on: January 15, 2022, 03:33:05 PM
You seem a bit pessimistic, Lucius.

Just realistic, nothing more than that. This is an exaggeration of something that may have minimal significance for one city, not even for Brazil as a whole.

Don't you think that the mayor of Miami receiving his paycheck in Bitcoin is good news?

If he receives his salary in Bitcoin and then converts it into fiat (and I guess that’s the case), then that’s the same story we’ve been telling for years about whether crypto payment processors are positive or negative for Bitcoin? Everyone wants Bitcoin, no one wants it directly, I think that speaks volumes about trust.

Here, again, I see you pessimistic. To me, it seems extraordinary to create a digital currency and have it have the level of adoption that it has today. Besides, in your future projection you rule out exponential growth. I think it will be faster.

I’ve been reading this forum since 2014, and I’ve read so much nonsense that I could write a book. Then there was talk of some 1-1.5% of those who own or trade Bitcoin, by the end of 2017 maybe it increased to 2.5% to 3%, today it is certainly not more than 5%. Talking about some kind of mass adaptation through central banks and the defeat of fiat currencies is not at all serious, but I understand that some have a need to live in fairy tales, their choice.

Why do you say it will be inaccessible to the common man? As of today the best that someone with limited resources who can save a little bit can do is to put the savings into Bitcoin by doing DCA. He's not going to get as rich as the winklevoss twins, but he's going to improve his situation a lot.

Of course, we can still support the idea that anyone can buy $10 worth of BTC, and then pay $20 to withdraw the same coins from the exchange if they are not aware of how things stand. The human perception of the value they get for their money has changed significantly when it comes to Bitcoin - if you ask someone if they want to buy 0.002 BTC for $100 or 100 xxx coins for the same amount, most remain in great doubt. An ordinary person could buy 1 BTC very easily 5-6 years ago, today he can only dream about it, and the time will come when even 0.10 will be astronomically far away.
5702  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin wallet on phones on: January 15, 2022, 03:01:12 PM
I have noticed people do not recommend wallets on phone, but in reality, some people do not have money to buy hardware wallet and do not have computer but having it in mind to buy it later when they have money.

If someone can afford a smartphone of, say, $50, then they can also afford a hardware wallet that costs about the same. It seems that some still live in the past and think that HW costs a minimum of $150 + shipping. Security should have no excuse, especially if it is quite cheap today.

Is there a way the password can be bypassed to access the wallet. Phone password are not long, is it possible for the pilferer to hack the phone password to have access to the phone.

The security of smartphones is actually trivial, whether it is a simple PIN or a fingerprint - someone who knows what he is doing, easily bypasses such protection. Since mobile phones are most often lost, this is another reason why they are a bad choice for a crypto wallet. In addition, locking smartphones with a fingerprint is very risky, because anyone can use it while you sleep or are in another unconscious state.
5703  Other / Meta / Re: Test your forum knowledge. on: January 15, 2022, 02:38:28 PM
Sadly, The first ten topics on Meta are all low quality garbage from low-rank users trying to make unnecessary impressions;

I would like you to show us exactly what you think is garbage, because if we look at the first page of Meta today - 80% of the topics are from members who are highly ranked. In addition, the problem is not with those who produce poor and low-quality content, but with those who do nothing about it.

the gambling discussion board is still the most fascinating board at the moment. The B&H is pure shit at the moment.

I won’t comment on Gambling because I don’t participate there, although I know it’s full of shitposters and megathreads that meet the needs of signature spammers. B&H is a board for beginners, so it is realistic to expect that you will not find some super quality content there, although there are a number of members who make a quality contribution to that board.
5704  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: A secure hardware wallet for Bitcoin ? on: January 15, 2022, 02:10:53 PM
The price comes to a little bellow 250 $ without customs which vary , so I am not even sure about the end price.

I don't know where the price of $250 came from, because as far as I can see, the price of the Mk3 version is around $129, and you also get another 5% discount if you pay with Bitcoin. I know shipping costs and customs + VAT can be quite expensive, but $250 is still a little too much for HW considering there are alternatives.

On the other hand, if someone for obvious reasons does not want to trust the most famous manufacturers, then even $250 is not too much.
5705  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Brazilian mayor to reportedly invest 1% of city funds in Bitcoin on: January 15, 2022, 01:50:06 PM
That's amazing news. That's what real adoption looks like. First the mayor, then the central banks will adopt bitcoin and then the USD will be no more. Like Hemingway said: "Gradually, then suddenly." It starts always slowly and before you realize it will already be  at max speed. That's called "snowballing effect". I hope we can see more of these positive news in 2022.

I don't know what's amazing about this story, that another city will start creating its own shitcoin? What's even weirder is that you think the central banks will embrace Bitcoin and just throw away fiat or gold. If it's easy for a member who has been here for years to sell a story like this, it's no wonder that all beginners live in the grave delusion that Bitcoin will rule the world.

Less than 5% of the world's population has come into contact with Bitcoin in some way so far (from 2009), it is not realistic to expect more than 15% by the end of the decade. Bitcoin is just an alternative, no killer of the existing financial system - and besides, greed is increasingly destroying it as a cryptocurrency and turning it more and more into digital gold that is becoming increasingly inaccessible to the common man.
5706  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Brazilian mayor to reportedly invest 1% of city funds in Bitcoin on: January 15, 2022, 11:41:02 AM
I just hope it is not involved with any corruption.

In Brazil? Where did you get such an idea? Wink

Corruption is everywhere, the whole of Central and South America is synonymous with corruption and incompetent politicians, Brazil is no exception. What caught my eye was the fact that the mayor of Miami was mentioned, who also started talking about Bitcoin, and in the end, it all ended with MiamiCoin. I wouldn't be surprised if something like this happens in Rio, because they're all looking for a way to jump into the crypto train, but Bitcoin is just a stepping stone.

I couldn't find what the annual budget for Rio is, does that 1% mean anything worth mentioning at all?
5707  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Fear Index at 10 on: January 15, 2022, 11:17:08 AM
Can someone explain to me how these scales work? Or how to collect data and determine the measure of fear or anxiety?

Out of curiosity, it would be interesting to find out, but in the big picture, such data are more than insignificant and serve to manipulate the market. The fear we are talking about here stems from the fact that more than 80% of Bitcoin investors do not understand even some basic things, you easily sell them a story about China or Kazakhstan as many times as you want and they bite the bait.

In general, some still expect that the price will go to $100,000, and since the excessive optimism has ended (before the end of December), I expect that we may see more green candles soon.

With the exception of last year, January and February were not part of the year in which Bitcoin made any gains, and over the years it has been thought that this is because it is time to file taxes. In addition, realistically speaking, this is the period that comes after the big financial spending for the Christmas and New Year holidays, and now is the time to tighten the belt a bit.

Add to that a pandemic that is literally raging around the world, and it is predicted that in the next 2 months as many as 50% (250 million) of the EU population will be infected + inflation that is visible at every turn, I would conclude that the price Bitcoin currently holds is more than decent.
5708  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tonga to copy El Salvador’s bill making Bitcoin legal tender, says former MP on: January 15, 2022, 10:39:33 AM
Whats your opinion about this news? Is this another ATH bullish news?

I think you should refrain from reposting old news, and then how to properly post pictures on the forum (resize them). It would also be advisable to use a forum search, but this is clearly too much of a task for some who think Tonga is great news for Bitcoin, an island country in the middle of nowhere with barely 100 000 inhabitants...

5709  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tips To Upgrade Your Post Quality For Future Reference on: January 14, 2022, 04:25:57 PM
This thread is aimed at equipping newbies for the future task ahead of us on the forum, with regards to becoming a quality poster and member of this from both now and the future and to also serve as reference points for future discussion and development of the forum who know one day the forum will upgrade to that level where members post will be bided and sold as NFT.  Grin

Oh no, another one that thinks posts can be sold as NTFs - haven't we said enough about it? Bitcointalk posts as nft

So based on what the OP says for his future reputation, remove the junk you think might hurt you in the future.

Anyone can edit and even delete their posts, but forum members must know that all posts are saved in the original edition by at least 2 services run by forum members. We’ve all had our beginnings on the forum, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of - I was a beginner in 2015, I knew little about Bitcoin, and my English was far worse than it is today - these are facts I can’t change even if I wanted to. In addition, I have too many posts to play with editing Wink
5710  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Forecast by Goldman Sachs on: January 14, 2022, 03:56:09 PM
If anyone's still listening to "price forecasts" especially with an asset like bitcoin in 2022, then I don't even know what to say; especially "forecasts" from a company like Goldman Sachs lol. If there's something I've learned with bitcoin throughout the years, bitcoin tends to heavily surprise people regardless if it's in the upside or downside.

These bankers are just repeating the same story that JPM repeated like a broken record last year - the price of BTC will reach the price of $100k or so if it manages to become a competitor to gold as if that was the only reason the price would one day reach six-digit numbers. Of course, these investment bankers are only interested in whether they will have Bitcoin reserves instead of gold reserves, and the only positive thing in all this is that they are far behind all those who turned out to be much smarter than them.

While some may like what bankers are saying, remember who it really is and what they are willing to do for profit.
5711  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: IS it possible to let your BTC work for you ? on: January 14, 2022, 03:32:48 PM
BTC works for you by increasing it's purchasing power over the years.

If you send your BTC to any company you're taking huge risks for very small gains. You could lose it all eventually.

Think long term, and keep your BTC in your own cold storage. You'll be way better off with less risks.

This. The best way Bitcoin works for you is not by giving you interest or a dividend, it is by capital appreciation. A lot of people are fooled by this. I'd rather have something that gives me 180% annual appreciation on average than something that gives me 10% interest and makes me lose 20% capital.

It seems like a very simple option, and has proven to be very successful over the years - but it only works for those who can afford a long-term investment. Most investors in BTC are still here for short-term profit, because the idea that Bitcoin can collapse at any moment still has a lot of supporters.

However, we should be honest and say that we who have been investing in Bitcoin since 2014/15 can look at the whole thing much more comfortably than any small investor today - we are not too affected (I speak for myself) by the fact that Bitcoin loses 10% overnight or 30% in a month - because an investment of a few hundred dollars is still worth a real fortune.

Consequently, it is not difficult to understand why the average investor today is no longer enthusiastic about the "just hold" strategy, even if he knew that in about 5 years he would earn, say, 500% or even more.

5713  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Expresscrypto Help!! on: January 14, 2022, 11:51:16 AM
I wasn't aware that Expresscrypto is owned by well known scammer. It's strange that despite such things, Expresscrypto become quite popular microwallet and there were no red flags about them.

As far as I know, he had some faucets on FaucetHub that are scam users or something like that, and I remember a warning from @mexicantarget about something like this could happen. Otherwise, admin EC is known by the name achchou, and under that name, he also had faucets on FaucetHub.

Now I think it's small chance that Expresscrypto will return. Already enough time passed and haven't heard anything from them for a while.

I agree, the only chance is that this is about the owner being incredibly incompetent and that he really inadvertently messed things up - even though the chance of that is less than 10%. If the service doesn't return in ten days, I think it will be just another in a series that performed a successful exit scam.

I am also damaged for a smaller amount, although it bothers me more that I promoted this service from the very beginning, but who knew that everything would end like this.
5714  Other / Meta / Re: Official Bitcointalk NFTs that can be used as avatars? on: January 14, 2022, 11:14:04 AM
Sounds like my take on signature campaigns, but here we are. Let me know when you buy your first NFT.  Wink

The signature campaigns were part of the forum when I became a member of the forum, they are still there today and will probably exist in 5 or 10 years. This is something that is specific to this forum (at least as far as I know) and makes sense for advertisers and those who advertise them. I have never bought or plan to buy anything like this (NTF), but let everyone do with their money whatever they want.

Bitcointalk has historical value in the community. NFTs that can be used as avatars can have cultural value for some subcommunities and it appears that it is beginning to manifest among cryptocurrency users in social media. I shake my head on why much of the people in the forum are always quick to tell everyone that a new idea is a scam. They might only be underestimating the cultural value of NFTs.

It is not clear to me that some people think that everything is for sale, and only through NTF - first someone wanted to sell posts that way, now it's the turn of avatars, and the question is what else can we offer for sale?

This kiddy is now famous in my country, and some of his photos have actually sold more than that price.

Human stupidity is obviously limitless, and as someone says, it's constantly spreading - and the fact that someone pays thousands of dollars for a picture of an unknown person sitting in front of a computer is more than enough proof.
5715  Other / Meta / Re: Official Bitcointalk NFTs that can be used as avatars? on: January 13, 2022, 03:26:47 PM
This is already the third or fourth thread on the topic of NTF set in Meta, and from that, I can conclude that for some Bitcoin has become a bit boring, so they are looking for excitement in some other things.

If this person can create his own NFT collection series, I am quite certain the Bitcointalk community can also create its own collection series hehehe.

That guy sells his photos that consist of him sitting in front of a computer for several years - would anyone pay even $1 for something like that? I must admit that 5-6 years ago I could not even dream that people would engage in such nonsense, and that they would make money from that.
5716  Other / Meta / Re: Fix unresponsive Firefox on: January 13, 2022, 03:09:44 PM
I haven't had any problems with the forum even though I use Firefox. It is possible that the thing is in the FF version, and for me, the last update was to 96.0 1-2 days ago.
5717  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin may not experience blood bath on: January 13, 2022, 02:57:10 PM
A lot of good things are happening lately within the Bitcoin ecosystem which belief would give Bitcoin the potential to not experience huge market correction just like we see in the year 2017 and in previous years of cryptocurrency market blood bath.

Let's call it by any name, but from $70 000 as ATH to a bottom of as much as $28 000 is more than bloody for most investors - unless we're all used to Bitcoin losing or gaining 50% more or less in one year. Of course, it can always be worse, it's just not realistic to expect a replay of what happened in 2018.

What did IMF and Jack do that I believe help the market?

Jack Mallers is constantly doing something when it comes to his Strike app, and it certainly has some positive impact on Bitcoin, but the IMF is something quite the opposite of what Bitcoin represents, so you shouldn't expect people who worship fiat as a deity to ever be on Bitcoin side.

As far as I can see Jack Dorsey (ex. Twitter CEO) has posted nothing bullish except a retweet from Jack Mallers (Strike) regarding his app which has officially become available in Argentina.
5718  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Expresscrypto Help!! on: January 13, 2022, 12:01:09 PM
I can only say that the whole thing seems very suspicious, and that I now remembered the warning given by the owner of FaucetHub (mexicantarget) regarding the owner of ExpressCrypto who was a famous scammer on his platform at the time. At this point, there is still a chance that the site will work again - although the whole situation does not look promising at all.

I’ve had a few successful payouts from there in the past, but we all know it doesn’t mean anything in the long run.
5719  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can't open electrum after installing Monterey OS on: January 13, 2022, 11:19:55 AM
Good info here.  Lucius can you point me towards a tutorial on further explaining the risks and backup/storage techniques you mention?

In general, the matter is quite simple, you just need to follow a few basic recommendations :

  • Never save your backup (seed words) online (e-mail, cloud, plain text document).
  • One backup is not enough, you need at least two - preferably not saved in the same location.
  • The computer you are using should have adequate antivirus and anti-malware protection, and always keep the latest update for the OS you are using.
  • Every action on the hardware wallet should be carefully checked and only then approved by pressing the HW buttons - so you protect yourself from a possible attack by clipboard malware.
  • Last but not least, you can protect your seed by adding a passphrase (extra password) that will serve as an additional safeguard in case someone comes into possession of your seed.
  • An additional warning - it is not wise to tell others that you own cryptocurrencies, then you open the possibility of becoming a victim of what we call $5 wrench attack.

Source

And a person who doesn't know how to swim is in great danger if they're dropped in a pool. However, if they wear a life jacket the chances of getting drown are definitely less.

It makes sense, I just wanted to emphasize that a large number of HW users do some things wrong because they believe that it is important to protect only the device, while everything else is less important.
5720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Strike has launched in Argentina on: January 13, 2022, 10:53:18 AM
Exactly! For some reason, Jack posted a tweet that would probably mislead most of the newcomers:
With Strike, the Argentinian people can now hold a stable cash balance that can be spent both instantly and with no fees.

I believe Jack meant direct transactions here when Bitcoin is used only as an intermediary between two Stike accounts that have, say, balances in $ or EUR.

Strike is an application that allows Lightning payment transactions with just a debit card or bank account. However, its peculiarity is that instead of having to buy bitcoins to load their Lightning channels, Strike users do not have to use BTC.

In other words, you pay in fiat, but you use Lightning. If you want to convert fiat to bitcoin, you transact in Lightning and pay through Strike.

According to Mallers, “This is important because Strike users are not exposed to volatility, tax consequences, custodial challenges, node management, channel management, etc. When a user makes a Lightning payment with Strike, their balance is debited. When a user receives a payment on Strike, their balance is credited.”

I have to admit that I have only looked at Stike through the prism of El Salvador so far, but some things are a little clearer to me now - because this is about paying in fiat using LN without BTC being directly involved in the transaction. In fact, person A sends $1000 to person B using Strike who transfers that amount to person B's wallet free of charge using LN and converts back to fiat.

Quote
Let’s take a practical example: Paula wants to send €1,000 (balance available in the Strike App) to her friend Ana in France. Strike debits the required amount from the user’s linked account or available balance and converts it into Bitcoin. Strike moves the Bitcoins on the Lightning network in less than a second and at no cost.

Then, the same application automatically converts the bitcoins back into euros and will credit the user’s account.
