so one conceptual thing i don't totally understand. if israel in some sense stole the lands from the palestinians, didn't the palestinians steal the land from the romans, who stole the land from the greeks, who stole the land from the persians, who stole the land from the babylonians, who stole the land from the assyrians, who stole the land from the jews? i don't understand why the "right" to the land started arbitrarily at one point in time (so the argument seems to me to go).
'palestinians' are a new creation/fabrication. A weapon to use against Israel. They are Arabs. If you look at their surnames, many of them betray their origin. Far from being a 'palestinan' people, one of the most common names in Gaza is "Al-Masri" which means "The Egyptian". |

It's unlikely to last long. Not unless Israel releases the hundreds of people it arbitrarily detained in the West Bank roundup it engaged in when looking for the missing students, and unless it eases the blockade restrictions of Gaza considerably. I suppose I should also say unless Egypt eases up a bit on material transfers into Gaza as well. Egypt played its part in the decay of the 2012 ceasefire too. I agree with you here. Israel, Egypt, and the Palestinians all need to do their part. Israel should increase its contact with the Arab League in order to find a more just and peaceful solution to the conflict. |

I think precognition happens when the person's brain goes into a very specific scenario about something that could happen, and then what happens has a look and feel that is very close to that preconceived scenario. Because the scenario is still stored in memory, it "comes back" as a memory. Since it appears to your conscious self as a memory, then it must have been a "premonition" or whatever. Same thing with deja vu. Your mind plays out something very detailed, it happens, then the detailed memory comes back with a "woah, I was just there!"

The United States and its voters need to change their thinking. Pressure works and we simply aren't in a strong enough position domestically to be able to put pressure on Israeli administrations to adhere to a peace deal. Then both sides really need to change their thinking. We should also pressure Mahmoud Abbas and Fatah to break ties with Hamas . That wouldn't accomplish anything. Israel used to cite their unity as a prerequisite for a peace deal, claiming that as long as Palestinians were divided they could never negotiate. Netanyahu never really wanted them to unify though, a united Palestine is a more diplomatically and politically threatening Palestine because then they can present a stronger face to the international community. The fact that a major military offensive against Hamas is taking place so soon after the unity government was announced is not a coincidence. |

Israel is a small country that is vulnerable on all of its borders. That is why it is doing what it is doing. Not really. Israel is pretty militarily dominant. The fear of being wiped out isn't one with a lot of muscle behind it. |

okay, see, now I've been fond of ants since I did a report on them for geology back in gradeschool. With my imagination, I invented huge kingdoms of ants in the backyard, envisioned huge colonies going to war...ants are just the most fascinating species alive. Animal Planet should do a special on this war coming up, I bet they'd get a lot of watchers if they did it right. I might even suggest to them in an email how it should be done. I watched Meerkat Manor on DVD, what a great series that was. I felt so bad when Flo died. |

I read a sci-fi book once that posited the question of what will succeed man as the next intelligent species. The guy had two species.
First, we would be replaced by rats. No, no connection to my nick--I've been mickeyrat since childhood--but the guy pointed out that humans share with rats the conversion from herbivores to omnivores, specifically meat, explaining why we grew so much stronger and smarter than our herbivore primate or rodent cousins. Rats are known to be amongst the most intelligent (obviously) non-human species, they (we?) are also survivors: rats are everywhere in the world, and they (we?) have enough sense to scurry away from danger and jump the sinking ship. Rodents also have actually the same sort of body structure that we do, shorter forelimbs, strong haunches, ability to stand upright, meaning that they could evolve the sort of body structure necessary to create an advanced technological civilization such as our own.
He chose a second species to succeed rats. Now, I would have chosen ants, because I think really ants possess the capacity to be a dominant intelligent species; I expect in that case there would be a collective consciousness, settled in the queen, and I can see ants evolving a body form that allows them, given their much smaller size, to actually use multiple-body formations, cooperative behavior, that allows, say a million ants, all linked together, to serve as an arm or leg.
However, due to their limited mobility, the author chose a different insect--dragonflies--as the intelligent species to succeed rats. The logic, I thought, was a bit less secure than that of rats or my own preferred formicids, but he suggested that the body shape of dragonflies, their social behavior and their ability to fly would allow them, in time, to evolve into a successful land species that would be able to build, again, a tech civilization.
It was, all told, a very good book.
