61  Other / Meta / Re: Does the system allow you to send merit to yourself? on: May 15, 2018, 06:00:58 AM
It's good that limit was put into place. If one person had say 100 sMerit, they could merit themselves around 197 merits before they ran out of those merit as each merit is worth a half of the previous merit.
The power of merit farming LOL

------------------
100=> 100
50=> 150
25=> 175
12 (0.5)=> 187
6 (0.5)=> 193
3 (0.5)=> 196
2 => 198
1=> 199
(0.5)=> 199
------------------

Hey! you got it wrong but close enough  Grin
Half of 25 is 12.5 where you chose to round down. Later on you take half of three which is 1.5. At this point you chose to round up.

If you are rounding up all the time you get 202. If you round down all the time you get 197. I think it rounds down but I'm not too sure. I think OP is right about 197.

lol, I was clicking your images trying to remove the highlighted text. Took me a second to realize it was just a picture.  Embarrassed

It's easy to notice that but sometimes it's time-wasting deleting irrelevant words, so I just click on quote. Btw, I wish there were a "Multi quote" button for easy multi-quoting.

Perfect timing for me to read this. Someone in another post showed me a quick shortcut to sort of multi quote. It isn't perfect, but it works.

It seems that it's possible if "Quick Reply" option in Settings is enabled: it that case the "Quote" button adds quotes to one post in sequence, not sends you to another page. But it concerns only one thread page - if you go to the next (or previous) one, the form would be cleared out.

Wow this is a cool feature, thanks for showing me. Smiley

Just use the archive if you need it with all your referencing.

I constantly use that feature and it really helps me to make a "quick" reply every time the thread is about quick discussion like this one.

Alternatively the constructive post I can only give in this thread how about use the archive if you need to reference all the comment? it will really help if you need a certain page, but not entirely all the page.

I'm not sure how to access "the archive", but I sure enjoy testing out this quick reply feature.
64  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / POW vs. POS on: May 14, 2018, 04:44:24 AM
Is there anyway for someone to explain this in not so technical terms, the pros and cons of both of these and what they are?

From my understanding:

POW (proof of work) is bitcoin being mined through mining rigs using computers. The first computer that finds the answer distributes it to the network and it is added to the blockchain and the miner gets a reward. So the proof of work is the computer computation.

POS (proof of stake) is bitcoin being mined simply by owning that coin over an arbitrary amount of time. You hold the coin and get more of that coin, because you hold it.

Is this correct?
65  Other / Meta / Add multiple quotes to one post? on: May 14, 2018, 04:31:13 AM
I think it would be a great feature to this forum if people could quote multiple people in a post with the click of a button. Recently, I had to quote two people who posted before me in two separate posts. It would be easier if I could quote them in one post so that it doesn't clutter up the page as much.

Thoughts?

EDIT

Okay, I just realized you can do this already after you are already on the drafting page with the "insert quote" link. It still would be cool to hit multiple quotes before you arrive at the drafting page though.
66  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: The decline of forums on: May 14, 2018, 04:20:27 AM
I've been active on forums for many years, and I've seen a variety of models and interests. These include porn webmasters, hosting, domain sellers, hippy, general, casino promoters, and a variety of others. I've even created fake forums to generate traffic to sponsors and other sites I own. One such is Net Barons. and today is the first time I've visited that for many months. I've moderated and owned a number of forums, and I try to use my signature for my own purposes. I have never rented the space to a third party. It is unfortunate that the promotion that generated me the most money was in the on-line casino industry, and one signature on a porn webmaster board was earning £2,000-£3,000 per month.

The problems that I have seen have been many, and the worst for me was the attempted signups by ref link spammers for the pharma and porn industries. It is hard to control a flow of 500 or so signups every day, and one just ends up closing registration.

Another problem comes from cliques of long term members who try to dominate new members. This can drive away potentially useful contributing members. Often they start flame wars, and whilst sometimes these can be entertaing, often they are destructive for the forum.

I was also very active on a paid to post forum, and this can be fast flowing, and generate good revenue for the forum owner, but it does encourage spamming, and it is often difficult to maintain a sensible discussion.

One formula that does seem to work is to have an open section with a number of boards, and a closed section that is private and invitation only. I'm a member of a casino forum that has this structure, but I've rather neglected it of late,

Bitcoin Talk has a fairly difficult problem. It needs to be international, but it needs to have the main boards in English. Keeping the English boards clean can only be managed by active moderation in my opinion. It would also appear that it needs the traffic generated by the bounty hunters, and they seem to be very low level members in the main, and I believe that they should be contained in their own sub-section of boards.

This post seems to be going on a bit, so I'd better close it now. Smiley

I've had very little success with online casinos and sports book. I have managed to get 25 clicks and one sign up. I was so excited to get one sign up, but they didn't even gamble. Was there anything in particular you did that made you successful?

I have even considered opening up a forum of my own, but I fear I will be wasting my time since I am terrible at getting traffic for other stuff I've done.
67  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: The decline of forums on: May 14, 2018, 04:10:26 AM
I have been a part of many forums. I believe there is more spam here than on most other forums I have been a part of. The only forums I frequent now though are bitcointalk and 2+2. I haven't really noticed forums declining in usage. They seem to be the way they always have been.

I sometimes read 2+2 but I’m not a member. Hasn’t the traffic declined? Making money with online poker isn’t nearly as easy as it used to be. The decline in traffic on poker-red forum (in Spanish) has been drastic.

It is hard to see that from my perspective. I frequent the bitcoin section on 2+2 under business and finance and new stuff is posted nearly every day. I also was never there for the poker boom. So I missed out on the easy money. Cry

I imagine that you are correct though. I joined 2+2 in 2013 so maybe that is a bit late.
68  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Posts of legends made here of past Bitcointalk members on: May 14, 2018, 03:54:16 AM
I think people that invest all their money are going a bit too far. I'm excited about crypto currency too, but I think it is prudent to keep your eggs in many baskets.

Interesting to see posts from so long ago. Even the ones that went off the deep end and put every cent in crypto. I think it is important for people to look at failure as a possibility though. Fortunately it worked out for them anyway. Cheesy

Happy to see movement!!! Grin

Im quite happy to see a rise in Poly on CMC today. Though I'm reserved in thinking this is nothing special, the entire market is in an upswing. Hopefully being back in the top 100 people will start to take notice and react. I'm really optimistic that this year could be the security token year. Hopefully poly will be a reactive agent!

Indeed the whole market is seeing a slight upswing but Polymath has outgrown the market for quite a while now. I am still thinking to invest but can‘t get over the fact that they screwed with their first airdrop and apparently i was not the only one

I hear ya, but at the end of the day it comes down to money. At least in my book. If you think it will be profitable then most certainly it is a good idea to invest.

I got kicked out of the telegram group for asking too many questions or something. I was pretty pissed, but I don't want the actions of one individual to make me miss out on the fun.

I think at $1ish it is still a strong buy. I think it can be pretty hard to evaluate how much a crypto coin should be worth, but a good starting place is to look at other coins and compare them.
70  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] POLYMATH: The Securities Token Platform on: May 12, 2018, 08:37:58 AM
I'd be very pleased if Polymath found its way up to $200 per coin. That would be splendid. Seems quite far fetched, but it certainly is possible.  Grin

I'm not sure if all of you have been watching, but Poly jumped up around 40% in a single 24 hour period. Quite impressive comeback after the huge drop. I think this coin is a strong buy.

Their marketing is very strong. Even if the whole idea was just hype, it will grow from the marketing alone. Once it branches off to other exchanges we will see a price increase from that alone. Plus, under the small chance that it becomes a huge success we will make tons and tons of money. Oh yeah!

72  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Thoughts on DuckDuckGo? on: May 04, 2018, 07:08:28 AM
I use it primarily...

Me too.

I've switched from Chrome&Google to Firefox&DuckDuckGo some time recently.
I don't like the idea of a server that has access to every thought I searched in my entire life since I got my first computer.
Essentialy, those in posession of that power can blackmail anyone they dislike because everyone has searched something that's wrong in the eyes of the public at least once in their lives.

I've just switched from Microsoft Edge to Firefox. I use to be a chrome person, but it slowed down my computer. Something to be aware of with Firefox is that by default it saves your passwords in the browser. So if anybody has access to your computer they will be able to see whatever passwords you've used. I really dislike Firefox for doing this, but their user interface is so great that I've made the switch. Plus it is fast!

I'll repeat once again, just be aware that Firefox saves passwords by default. So if you don't like this feature you have to manually turn it off.

Is that really true?
I always get a messege saying do you want Firefox to save this password and I click no o.o

If you go to the three bars in the upper right hand corner, then select Options, then select Privacy & Security you will see a box checked that says "Remember logins and passwords for websites." Mine was checked by default. If you click on the Saved Logins... button you'll get a list of your saved passwords.

I just tried it out, and it does indeed ask you if you want to save your password. I checked if it was in the log and it wasn't. So false alarm on Firefox saving passwords without your permission. Firefox is now cooler than I previously thought.

There is also a feature called the "Master Password". Basically it is a password to unlock your other passwords. This is pretty cool. This way you only need to remember one password for all the sites you login to. Someone from an outside computer would still have to deal with the many passwords you've set up. I'm probably not going to be using this feature, but I still think it is a great option. Long ago, I was contemplating building a website that does this for you, but it appears Firefox has already done it.
73  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: What is the best way to scale Bitcoin to the masses? on: May 02, 2018, 05:10:10 AM
You don't scale a system by not using it/using it less.

I think you misread my post. I advocate using the system more.

How does using bitcoin more not affect how much it scales? I would think the more people that use it in transactions the more network effect it has. Can you explain what makes bitcoin scale and what your strategy would be?

Taxes are definitely an obstacle. Hopefully in the future this will change.

75  Other / Ivory Tower / Thoughts on DuckDuckGo? on: April 30, 2018, 06:22:56 AM
I've been working on becoming a web developer. So I started downloading all the major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer, and Opera). I also took a look at some other search engines and have discovered DuckDuckGo. I'm really liking it so far, because when you search for things there are the classic tabs: Web, Images, Videos, and News. Sometimes for certain keywords there are other tabs that relate to that keyword. For example, if I search up a food item there is usually a recipe tab where I can look at recipes. If I look up other types of words I may get a definition tab.

Another thing I like about the search engine is that in the Images they have the pixel size written over a transparent gray box when you hover over an image. Google has this too, but it is at the bottom of the picture and isn't as aesthetically pleasing. I also like the fact that you can get the full scale image without going to the website like you would have to do with Google. Also, another feature that I like, is when you search for something an icon of the site is to the left of the url link. This is useful if there are some sites that you know you don't like to visit. For me personally, I'm not a fan of Forbes, because it takes to long to load. With the icon there, I can identify which links I would like to click on and which ones I don't at a quicker speed.

DuckDuckGo seems like something I think a lot of people on this forum would like, because it doesn't track all the websites that you visit (or at least that is what they say). When I'm Googling it is kind of freaky when advertisements come up tailored for me. That is kind of cool, but at the same time it is just a bit creepy, because Google knows me a bit too well for my liking.

I've decided to give DuckDuckGo a try for awhile and see if I like it. Anyone else think this is cool?

Quote
Is it humane to have a child and then neglect and abuse that child? Well this is what happens in reality. Sometimes even in wanted pregnancies. Sometimes people are not any better than animals, even worse.... In those cases, the child is better dead than living in such conditions. You speak as if you don't know what kind of shit is going on around you, like you live in a perfect little world where everything is just peachy. Wake up.

I don't live in a perfect world. I would be lying if I said that I have had more advantages in life than most. So yes, I do have it pretty good and could very much be in an Ivory Tower to some extent. I am aware that there are terrible people in this world. However, killing a child isn't justified by the parents' potential bad behavior of which may or may not happen. Now if the child was to be born with a specific illness where that baby would always be in pain I would support that abortion. Killing the baby because of what the parents will probably be like seems a bit too Minority-Report-like.

Quote
We know that the nervous system is not developed enough to sense the fetus's surroundings or control bodily functions before around 26 weeks, and so consciousness, by it's very definition, cannot exist before this time.

Would this be an argument for abortion before 26 weeks, but not after?

Quote
Rather paradoxical you believe this, yet you are also pro death penalty.

The difference here, is that the people facing death penalty have made choices in their life that have led them to where they are. Also, the family grieving their loved ones who were murdered are getting closure. With a baby, it hasn't made that choice. These differences are very crucial. Euthanasia cases where people who are in constant pain and are unable to kill themselves, IMO, should have the benefit of death. It is not that I value their lives less. It is the fact that they have a choice.

Quote
Or rape. Or when pregnancy or childbirth puts the mother's health or life at serious risk. Or when the baby would die shortly after birth. Or when the baby is already dead. Or when the baby would be born severely disabled. Or when the parents have no way to look after the baby after being born. Or 100 other reasons. Your misleading generalisation isn't helpful to anyone.

I could be ignorant on this, but it was to my understanding that these kind of situations are more of an exception and not the norm. I had made it clear in my original post that in cases of rape an argument for it could have some merit.

Quote
Is anyone responding to this topic a female? Quite frankly, men need to STFU when it comes to this topic.

While women who have bore children may have a more enlightened view on the topic, this doesn't make male's opinions worthless. After all, children have a mother and a father. What if a mother wants to have an abortion, but the father doesn't?

Quote
This just gave me an idea. Scientist should make an artificial uterus (womb) and let the man carry the baby for 9 months. They shouldn't forget to add all the pains that follow the pregnancy and birth and we shall see how brave they will be...

Do you know how many abortions they could prevent.

Not that I support abortion!

In the far future, I wouldn't be surprised if something like this exists.
77  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Abortion is a God Given Right of Females like the right to bear Arms on: April 27, 2018, 10:18:52 AM
I don't understand how people think abortion is humane. Is it humane to throw your baby in the microwave? How would this be any different than a fetus? What distinguishes a fetus from a baby? Is there really that much of a difference?

We don't know when consciousness begins. We don't know a lot of things. There is no single point where a fetus becomes a baby, it is a very gray area that I don't think people should be messing with.

I also believe abortion is a stepping stone for devaluating human life in general. I think media culture definitely has taken a strong impact on our society. On TV people are always having casual sex. This results in people thinking that it is normal to have platonic sex until boom! You have a baby and reality sinks in. Abortion is just an excuse for people that want to have sex without taking any responsibility.

There are some situations with rape where a case of abortion could be made, but that is such an ugly situation and I don't even know if it is justified even then.

Another thing that I can't wrap my mind around is how liberal folks become so empathetic for animals. "Oh no, don't squash that spider. It has feelings too you know." But when it comes to a fetus, "It isn't really a person. The mother has a right to kill her baby as long as it isn't born yet."

...So... spider > fetus  Huh Huh Huh
78  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Is the Ivory Tower proof we shouldn't restrict other sections like the I.T.? on: April 27, 2018, 09:58:23 AM
I'm a big fan of the Ivory tower. Probably my favorite place to go in the Bitcoin forum. I feel like there is actual conversation going on rather than

"Bitcoin has given people hope because future will be good. I now afford good things for me and changed my life. I hope it goes higher still. Maybe even 10 million."

That stuff gets old real quick.

I still think signature campaigns are pretty sweet I just don't want them to flood into the Ivory tower. It isn't a common feature in many forums to have this kind of market place atmosphere that we have at Bitcointalk. I like Ivory tower just the way it is. The other forums may have some additional changes to make them better. I'm not sure what those could be.

What really makes me wonder, is who the hell clicks on signatures? Pretty much nobody I'd think, but apparently that can't be so. Campaign managers that allow a certain quota of posts really should watch where in the thread they are making those posts. Somebody making a post on a thread 13 pages long probably will never get read. It is surprising any of these campaigns actually generate any money.
79  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Block 519996 just mined, which set BTC supply to 17 million exactly, 4 millions on: April 26, 2018, 10:25:16 AM
Out of that 17million mined 10% is held in 'satoshi nakamotos' wallet and a further 4 million bitcoins are lost!!!

Can you provide a source which accounts for the 4 million lost bitcoins? How does one discover how many are lost with certainty?
80  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bubbles a good thing? on: April 26, 2018, 10:05:14 AM
All the hype that bitcoin and crypto currency in general has created is stirring up new innovations everyday. My money is on Bitcoin being the success in the end, but who knows. Some group out there might come up with something better.

I know that during the dotcom bubble, people found ways to do business over the internet. Today this is happening. I imagine something similar will happen with cryptocurrency.

Do I think bubbles are a good thing? No. No because I will lose money, lol.
