62  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Empty blocks on: May 20, 2017, 05:09:27 PM
Unfortunately money is the only motivator to the spv mining pools.  I hope that it becomes financially necessary for them to stop mining empty blocks, it will be a great thing for the network once they do, and it would give a more accurate portrayal of how the network is able to handle tons of transactions (and hopefully put an end to the excessive delays waiting for tx to go through).

hello,

as of today, the average fee per block is of 2 BTC so mining empty blocks is about 16% less profitable. but is still happens that some pools mine empty blocks.

can anyone explain this?

thanks
I think the accepted reason is that BITMAIN is using a covert version of the ASICBOOST system to boost their profits.  IIRC, the empty blocks are an effect of that.  I may not be up to speed, however--if someone has a differing opinion I would love to hear it.

could u tell me how many chips are in the baikal cube, it should be in the net interface

Nine chips.

do you know which chips they are? ...

im curious as to what fpga / asic chips they use ...

any one pulled a miner apart to see? ...

only reason im asking is because of the cooling system - and the heat watt dissipation ... knowing the make and model of the chips can give us all the specs we need ... working on a better cooling system - and require all this info we cant seem to find anywhere ... not even in the reviews ...

#crysx

If they are asics, then you won't find a make and model.  they are custom made.  But if they are by chance FPGA then there will be something out there.

We don't know anything about them and no one has dissected one yet.

My first theory is that they are fpga.   My second theory is that they are asics that some hardware student designed in grad school in china and was able to get them on a tape out of a research wafer.   When i was in grad school for hardware/circuit design, we were allowed to piggy back on unused wafer space for IBM and TSMC.  It was something that was free for universities. for research only.

I believe the only way they could come back after release and add additional algos is if they are FPGAs.  I'm no EE, but that's the only thing that makes sense.  I was able to take my original X11 only mini and upgrade it to the additional algos they all now ship with.  FPGA.

Could anyone please direct me to a guide for allowing remote access to my baikal quad over the internet? I'm going away for 3 months in June for work and there is no way my girlfriend is going to be able to do anything for troubleshooting but hard power cycle it

Also, when I want to manually change pools, I have to change the pool priority on the http setup page, and then execute a hard power restart for it to change pools. Is this for anyone else?
You can download Teamviewer and remotely access it, that's what i'm doing right now too.

I don't have to do a hard restart to change pools.

Is that the best setup for a mining farm? How can I setup email / text notifications if one or multiple go offline?
I setup a PI with VPN access to my netowrk. Then I can login there and do anything I want locally on my network.
I do the same, and have remote switchable power switches to boot.  It's pretty simple to utilize a VPN, most modern consumer ISP routers include that functionality out of the box.

Wait for me

Can I learn CIP code

Bitfury ASIC chip ? or Asic A4 chips ?

tankyou

I believe these devices are actually FPGAs.  You wouldn't be able to go back and add multiple new alogs via firmware if they are actually ASIC chips.  Correct me if I'm wrong, people.

You guys are comfortable dealing with baikal when their whole system could currently be compromised?

I'm personally holding off for now, too much weirdness for my liking.  That said, their operation has always been ... rough at best.  These issues don't seem too far off the mark going by my past dealings.  Once they get their act together I'll continue to do business with them.

Just wondering out loud...
With the old 150M cubes, you could build-up multiple cubes using the cables and make a 2, 3, 4 or more rig under a single PI.
Likewise, you could take a quad, and run it with 3, 2 or 1 cubes.
I wonder if we can do the same with the Quad 300M. For example, split it in half and just add your own PI with a duplicate image.
That might be a way to get "singles" but still benefit from the pricepoint on the Quad over the Single.

I only have a single cube, but I did break down my Giant miner into two 450 devices by adding a second OrangePi, removing the serial cable and connecting a single blade to each Pi.  I imagine that it will work the same way with the Quads--it doesn't make sense to make two different PCB boards when you can design a single board that can be using in both configurations.

I've also created a 300Mh device by combining two minis with a serial cable.  That's where I got the spare Pi to use with the Giant!

Their cubes don't use PCI-E connectors at all.

Yes they do.  Do you own one?  It uses a 6-pin PCI Express power connector.
70  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: BITTAWMS PANDA GROUP BUY - $30 DOLLARS OFF on: April 25, 2017, 11:24:04 PM
I need to cancel my order, a long time customer of my localbitcoins business decided to wrap a bunch of dollar bills in twenties and passed it off as 9k yesterday and scammed me for the entire amount.  I need to consolidate what I have left for the business, thanks for running this, was really excited, hopefully I can get in the next one.

May need to unload my L3+'s too, sigh, some people.  Try to run a legitimate business and take care of your customers and instead my soon to be born babies college fund gets robbed.

Could use a prayer right now if anyone is willing

I'll shoot you a prayer man.  Please be careful dealing with this, some people don't mind hurting folks to get a leg up.  Be safe.

I'm sorry to see people having issues, I hope it all gets sorted out soon.  Seems like a pretty good miner and I'd like to get one, but the website always showed them out of stock.  I wasn't even aware they were asking people to use email / skype...I'll just hold off until the website is fixed and they have inventory again.

My first orders for minis and giants were done completely via email.  When I ordered my cube they had me place my order on the website, then I confirmed shipping info and arranged payment (in BTC) via email.  The website is pretty rough, it always always redirects me to the mobile version.  I have to remove the "/mobile/" from the URL before it will even let me log in.

As has been discussed before, I believe this operation is ran by a few individuals.  Hopefully the payment and inventory system gets an update soon.

Website complaints aside, my early units have been running for six months or so without a single issue.

Well idk if this will go anywhere, but put me down for 2.

I am doing my best, baikal playing hard ball since we made them famous, but they know of this thread so keep it up

I'm not sure _we_ made them famous.  It's likely the fact that they make damn good hardware.  ;-)

we have created quite a gathering on bitcointalk, but yes they sell amazing hardware, I have been actively promoting their items for months,

I have been promised that the next batch will not have a unit restriction Smiley enjoy

That's awesome news, thanks!  I appreciate what you've been doing for the community--keep it up.

found the instructions , btw can I just hook up the unit to a normal PSU six min port ? I don't have an adapter that matches the one sent by baikal

Yes.

I got today my new Baikal Cube miner.
When I deleted the default pools and add my new pool settings the miner is not starting. I was clicking the save pools button. This is on Miner Down state.
When I try restart with cgminer soft reset button I got an "Miner:111 Connecton refused" error message.

The red led on the miner is on , the blue is blinking  and the green is off state.

How can I start the miner? Is possible an HW failure?

Did you remove the api-port and api-allow settings?  I imagine removing 127.0.0.1 might break things.  If all else fails, re-image your SD card and start over.

I just received my unit this afternoon.  It's well built, as expected.

I did notice something interesting that's a change from the minis.  The controller is now an Orange Pi Zero, which has built-in wifi.  I'll crack open the image this evening and make a pass at getting the wifi configured.  It might be a good option for people with limited space or network cabling.

TrX

edit: the SD card is also way easier to access than previous builds.
That would be amazing to use it with wifi. They have different data cable than the a900 so cant link them, too much lan cable. Can you share the image if you succeed?

I'm going to be fiddling with it today, I'll put up instructions when and if I get it working.  It's running Ubuntu, so should be simple enough to configure.

After working on this all morning, I'm afraid someone smarter than me (which is, like, 3/4th of the planet) will have to make a pass at it.  The drivers don't appear to be installed, and the Internet is packed full of people pulling their hair out trying to make the WiFi work on the Orange Pi Zero.  Since this is a "production" machine, I'm afraid to strip it down to it's nuts and bolts before I've made back my purchase investment.

Once I hit 100% ROI, I'll make a more invasive pass at it.

Cheers.

Trying to /SSH into the baikal 300mh cube

I get into the unit fine and the directory...but have lost all memory on how to get mining screen to come up on
such stuff via /ssh and putty

edit: by the by..my cube is hitting 310.1mh solid....what are others getting?

So the sgminer instance is running as the root user, rather than the baikal user.  You said you already attached, but I'll list the instructions for anyone that would like to give it a try.

Windows users will need to use PuTTY, and I don't have it in front of me to remember the connection dialog, Google that bit.

For Mac OS X and linux users:

Code:
ssh baikal@IPADDRESSOFMINER

The password for the baikal account is 'baikal' lower case.  If this is the first time you've connected via SSH, you will likely have to hit "Y" to the prompt to save the key fingerprint.

Since sgminer is running as root, we'll need to use sudo to run all the remaining commands.  We'll start by using the 'screen' command to find our sgminer instance:

Code:
sudo screen -list

The screen command should show you a message similar to this:

Code:
There is a screen on:
986.sgminer (04/19/2017 07:26:17 PM) (Detached)
1 Socket in /var/run/screen/S-root.

Every instance of screen should start with a different number, followed by ".sgminer"  Mine started with 986 in the example above.  You'll need that information for the final step:

Code:
sudo screen -r 986.sgminer

This command is telling the screen program to attach to the already running instance of sgminer.

One important note!  If you kill this instance of sgminer your machine will stop mining until you reboot the device.  To exit this screen and leave sgminer running, hit Ctrl-A followed by the D key.  It should clear the screen and look something like this:

Code:
[detached from 986.sgminer]
baikal@baikal3002:~$

Have fun!

edit: by the by..my cube is hitting 310.1mh solid....what are others getting?

I'm getting 309.6 mining on Suprnova.
I also noticed that this device runs 310 pretty consistently.  No complaints on my part!

The change to the Orange Zero does increase the load on the system significantly though.  It doesn't seem to affect the mining performance, but the minis consistently ran at 0.15 and the cubes are running at 4.0 load,  Hopefully we won't see any issues arising from the high load on the controller.  It does seems to take longer to load the web interface.

The cube, at least in my environment, also seems to run a few degrees hotter than my minis.  That anecdotal at best, but things to keep in mind.
