Ledger Hardware Receive Address Attack

Whenever using a hardware wallet  to send or receive. Make sure to check the display of your device to make sure the coins are going to the right address. A virus can change the address.

As one other and Jojo69 suggested I used bitcoin-abc-0.16.1-win64. And it worked just fine.

Maybe not with your operating system.

looking inside .bitcoin, the only differences i see btwn the contents of this BCH blockchain and my currently working BTC blockchain, both inside Ubuntu VM's on different machines, are two additional files inside the BTC blockchain; .cookie and bitcoind.pid.  anyone recognize those two and what they are?  are they critical to getting this Node Online?

@HCP:  there is no bitcoin.conf inside my working .bitcoin directory on my BTC blockchain.

You can google them. I googled them a long time ago. Don't remember what they are. I just wanted to make sure they weren't some type of spyware and found them to be safe...

If you have the old BTC folder and blockchain still on your computer that is likely the reason you're having trouble. You probably have to nuke everything and re-install the ABC wallet. If that doesn't fix it. Nuke and restore Armory.
64  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Using Armory on the BCH chain on: April 19, 2018, 12:20:43 AM
Armory is not for altcoins. I provided a BCH signer so that people can get their coins out. I will provide a BTG signer to the same end. I made it pretty clear back in August that if BCH (or any other Bitcoin fork for that matter) was to introduce changes that made it incompatible with Armory, I would not support that stuff.

Bump. BTG signer yet?  Grin

successfully installed 0.96.4 but still get Node Offline error.  bitcoind updating blocks just fine.

Somethings wrong with Armory then. As your ABC wallet is working. All I did was uncheck the box that says something like "Allow Armory to run Bitcoin-qt in the background".  That fixed the offline node error.  But I still had zero balance until I had Armory in the help menu "rescan and rebuild data base". Worst case scenario, you will have to restore your Armory wallets.

Another way to get the offline node error. Is to by accidentally, restore your offline wallet to your online machine with the paper backup. That had me spinning my wheels for a while.

You also need at least 8 GB of RAM to run Armory. Having less caused my computer to crash.

I appreciate the prompt response, goatpig. I started step one, however, I noticed that I'm downloading the whole blockchain again. Is that necessary? As I downloaded the whole blockchain (~125GB) 6 months ago... Also, can you elaborate on step 3? Meaning what needs to be updated and so on.

He's telling you to...

(1) uninstall Armory

(2) go into hidden files and delete the database folder? If you delete the everything (Armory file), make sure you have a backup. Because you'll have to restore it.

(3) reinstall the latest Armory version on the online computer. Make a copy of the latest version on a thumb and also update your offline computer.

You shouldn't have to re-download the blockchain because it is in the Bitcoin "hidden" folder.

Here is the trouble shooting page. Something went wrong when you upgraded. It says to contact support if you are unsuccessful. Maybe they'll send you a new device and that will fix your problem.

https://doc.satoshilabs.com/trezor-user/troubleshooting.html#windows-os-trezor-wallet-doesnt-recognize-trezor-after-update-to-firmware-140-or-later

Don't follow complicated advice that you don't completely understand.

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling your Trezor Bridge (that your chrome browser runs off of). Maybe it's just the display on your browser.

I think he should try this, but a new device may not solve the problem.
The coins are not physically inside the device, but in the blockchain. and he doesnt know the private or the mnemonic seed.

the best case scenario is that he knows the seed but the keys are in another address which he couldn't find yet. If that happens he could restore it in any wallet.

If the words are incorrect, or if the coins are not in that mnemonic phrase's derived addresses for some reason, a new device will not help.

I don't like the idea of typing secret seed information while on some type of site.

He probably has the right seed words. It's pretty difficult to botch that unless you were careless. A misspelled word would be easily spotted. It obviously didn't upgrade properly. They tell you to upgrade again if your coins are not in the wallet in the trouble shooting guide. Then go to support if that fails to work.

This link in support describes his problem. He may have already tried most of this. Maybe something isn't getting completely removed and he has to delete hidden files on his computer after uninstalling.    https://trezor.io/troubleshooter/#102

it must be seeing the previously running bitcoind

I completely uninstalled the original Bitcoin wallet including hidden files. That way it can't interfere. I couldn't even cleanly install ABC without removing previous wallet.

If you don't want to delete the Bitcoin wallet. Why not cut and paste the Bitcoin hidden folder to a thumb drive until BCH is extracted? Then after extracting BCH, put the Bitcoin file back and reinstall the program. Then you won't have to download the block chain again and your settings will be saved.

It looks to me like you have to uninstall the Bitcoin Client and it's hidden folder. Then Reinstall ABC wallet. And you might have to re-download the ABC Block chain.

Another thing you could try is to uninstall Armory. And delete the hidden Amory files also. Nuke it. Then restore Armory. If you're ABC wallet is working normal.  Then it is likely corrupted Armory data on your online computer. I originally was going to do that but decided to Scan and Rebuild the data base instead.

Here's a page on advanced recovery out of the online manual. Something you're doing is wrong or your device needs to be replaced.

I would contact Trezor support. When converting to Bitcoin Cash some lost Bitcoin temporarily until the problem was fixed. This link shows how to get get the ball rolling.

I don't like hearing this. I just started using a Trezor.  Roll Eyes

I found this update video on youtube. You have to press both buttons on the Trezor at the same time and no seed words are used.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJpLsNMhEx4

If worst comes to worst just wipe the Trezor device clean and use the seed words to restore your device.

trezor already compares the first 4 letters are correct, then it's correct.  i never used a passphrase.

You do have a passphrase using 1 through nine digits don't you? If not just press enter with no passphrase.

You did download the Linux version?

76  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: It is NOT secure to use hardware wallets (and it never was) on: April 11, 2018, 11:33:08 PM
I don't see me going back to downloading a block chain for each coin. And waiting to update or repair the blockchain before you can spend any coins Tongue.

Last weekend was spent updating and repairing 2 wallets, getting the coins out of a super secure offline signing wallet. And separating forks. I'm constantly helping users get access to their coins in their malfunctioning wallets:P. Corrupted data' human error etc etc etc. If your upgrade is tainted you could lose your coins that way.
77  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: It is NOT secure to use hardware wallets (and it never was) on: April 09, 2018, 01:18:19 AM
I haven't heard of anyone losing coins in a hardware wallet yet. Other than a device that already had been previously opened. They set the seed words and password. Then sent the device and a copy of the seeds words-password to the new owner. The new owner thought he bought a new device and didn't reset it. The crooks just waited until the coins were in the wallet and stole them.
78  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Issue on: April 08, 2018, 06:05:13 PM
My issue (well question) is that I’m running Bitcore Core version 0.16.0 and Armory 0.96.1 and am at the part were it says “Organizing Blockchain.” It has been there for awhile and was kind of wondering if you could tell me how to fix it or if it suppose to be like, etc. Thank for the help and hope I wasn’t to much of trouble!

Did you turn on the Bitcoin Core and let it synchronize (catch up) before opening Armory? If not I would try that first. If that doesn't work. With Armory go to "help" tab and select Rebuild and "Rescan Data Bases".

Should Shut down bitcoin-abc?

Yes. Bitcoin-abc. I fixed the error.

May you sum up the procedure?

(1) First move all BTC coins off of your Armory wallets and Bitcoin Core wallet to a safe place. I'm using a hardware wallet that will hold both BTC, BCH and other altcoins.

(2) Uninstall  Bitcoin Core.

(3) Configure your computer to show hidden files (google methods for your particular computer). Delete all hidden Bitcoin Core hidden files and blockchain. Google or use youtube to find files if you don't know. Your looking for a folder labeled Bitcoin. Delete it.

Or. If you intend to use the Bitcoin Core wallet later. Why not cut and paste the hidden Bitcoin File to a large enough Thumb drive? Then you could put it back later and won't have to download the blockchain later. I just deleted mine.

(4) Download bitcoin-abc-0.16.1 (Bitcoin-qt) for windows https://download.bitcoinabc.org/0.16.1/win/

(5) Install and synchronize new ABC (bitcoin-qt). Could take several days. Not easy to find the wallet install in the downloaded folders. If you use a zip file you will have to extract the files. "Hint" Open the files with the most data in them.

(6) Open Armory and in "User" tab and set to "expert" in both online and offline computers.

(7)  Also in Armory (online computer) go to File/Settings and uncheck the box at the top of the page that says. "Let Armory run Bitcoin Core/bitcoind in the background".

(Cool Shut down Armory and bitcoin-abc. Restart computer for the hell of it.

(9) Open up the new ABC wallet you previously synchronized. Wait until it is synchronized. Leave it on.

(10) Then open up Armory and let it synchronize.

(11)  Go to Help tab in Armory and select "Rebuild and Rescan Data Bases"

(12) You should be able to see the BCH balance in a few hours. To move the BCH you just follow the directions at   "the first post of this thread".
