61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hypothetically speaking... on: August 01, 2013, 08:11:47 PM
What if it was possible to switch the entire bitcoin or even all cryptocoins power to some other use for a day? Like switching a train to a different set of tracks. Where would you choose to switch it too? What kind of damage could be done? In the wrong hands could it be the end of the world? Personally I would love to see a SETI day happen once a year or even a folding day movement to help find any cure for the thousands of diseases that need our help. Just a thought.

As far as SETI goes, hate to say it, but I don't care one bit, it sounds like a waste of power. Curing diseases is nice, but a better choice would be for miners, businesses and consumers to donate some of their revenue.

I would like to think SETI would be a good use of power but your probably right with it being more wasteful than helpful. If anything does exist It will probably be knocking on our door first. Actually pretty excited to see Curecoin come out which donates part of the hash power towards folding to help cure cancer if I am not mistaken. Just the idea of using all this power we are producing and sharing even just a percentage of it to something other than transactions is pretty wonderful to see. Although a piece of revenue would of course be the most helpful I would have a hard time imagining anyone in the bitcoin world to share their funds with anyone. Power maybe a little but funds highly doubt it..lol Thanks for entertaining this idea with me and thanks for the +1!! Yes may not of fully understood the mechanics to this thought but had good intentions and appreciate your comments..thanks!

I assume we are talking about imaginary land here?  Because ASIC can't do anything other than SHA256.  They'd be useless at any of those other projects you mentioned.  Furthermore, if the hash power was useful for some other purpose and you could convince all honest miners to switch for a day, transaction confirmations would become almost non-existent for that day.

If we didn't care about the effects on bitcoin of the sudden extreme drop in hash power and ridiculously long confirmation times, and if the hash power could somehow be converted into useful processing power for any purpose, then I say we use it calculate as many digits of Pi as we can.  Why?  Why not.

Actually yes! imaginary land was exactly where I was going with this and maybe we could keep a few extra miners on bitcoin just to keep transactions afloat Smiley As for asic just doing sha256 didnt think about that and yes would be an issue but still think we could crank thru a shit ton of pi numbers if we did
there was a company that had a mining pool that anyone could join and all hashing rewards went to buy goats for charity. this was a very noble idea until the maths came to reality. the mining pool was quoting that it cost in the region of $120 for a goat.

Quote
it will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to Heifer International, which provides animals to families to help alleviate hunger throughout the world. For every $120 raised through the Bitcoin mining, they’ll be able to send a goat to one family.

yet the reality is that it only costs $25, through the same suppliers that the guys doing this project intended to use.

this basically meant that hashing power was only 20% affective of helping the world and 80% at making profit for the project/pool opperators. and the name of the people behind this noble cause that turned into a sham

coinlab

I guess in the end they at least gave 20% better than 0 even if they were being shady. If only I didnt skip out on that programming class I might be able to help make one that donates to animal shelters

Aren't our very habit the cause of all diseases?.... Embarrassed

yes but we can also be the solution Smiley

70  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: hypernova.pw "disappeared" with coins on: July 31, 2013, 08:41:57 PM
Now ideally can't Hypernova link the wallet address with username and ask them politely to return? Or at least return enough to cover everyone's wallets? Luckily only had .01 LTC so no big loss but feel for the people who took a hit

thanks, cuz this sucks!

Just waiting to hopefully find this next LTC block on the LTC123.net pool for a hefty reward then will throw my 1,500 hash that way Smiley  Should be found sometime in the next 12 hours now..tick tock tick tock
72  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [Scrypt] Extremely low hashrate on Sapphire 7970 Vapor-X Ghz edition on: July 31, 2013, 09:07:01 AM
At times I will have to restart the computer to see the 2nd GPU but that is usually when it crashes. I am using windows 7, with 13.6 catalyst beta 2 to get 770/khs on each 7970. I found that I eventually had to flash the BIOS on both cards to jump past 550. You may also want to try using -g 1  and definitely remove shaders as well as no need for lookup gap. Sometimes a 940/1275 clock ratio works well with 8192 TC. Also try 1040/1475 up to 1070 on the engine and then I finalized at 1100/1500 always using -I 13 to get 770. In the end though you may want to try a BIOS flash with another bios from the same GPU just different default clock speed. Probably one with a default of 1100/1500 would work and ideally a unlocked voltage would be nice.
73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Curecoin status report - Veiw Dev budget draft now - I want to be transparent on: July 31, 2013, 09:01:14 AM
Really excited to see this coin start to play out. One question which is probably a stupid one but would there be anyway to get feedback or data from the other end using the folding information? Not sure what type of data or statistics we would get but just a thought.
74  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to be different when issuing a new coin on: July 31, 2013, 08:56:18 AM
How about don't make the user deal with any .config file as most normal people will have no idea even how to see hidden files/folders(roaming).  If you need to deal with configs make it gui based in the wallet. The easier it is for the general public the more of the masses we can get involved.
75  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Official AnonCoin thread - Client Update!! (Native I2P, TOR nodes) on: July 31, 2013, 12:24:05 AM
I turned on a 3.5 coin bounty on http://anc.usr.io until we hit this diff jump, maybe someone will come help?

alright I am game..pointing at your pool for the day as this difficulty really needs to be changed! so 63860 is around the magic block # we are looking for?

That is correct sir. Thank you for your hashing in these slow moving times.

will be jumping back in sometime in the next 24hours to help find those blocks with nicksmith who is hashing away! hang in there man
76  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Donate Some processing power to computing projects on: July 30, 2013, 10:53:31 PM
Great thread and links to where we can share out processing power. I am pretty sure if the entire Digital Coin community put our power into Seti for one day we most certainly we find aliens
77  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Coin for a Cause? on: July 30, 2013, 10:48:33 PM
ahh dang! my bad.. thanks for the link as I must of missed this thread. Will be sure to give some love and nice to see this in action Smiley
78  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Coin for a Cause? on: July 30, 2013, 10:40:28 PM
Just a random thought. As much as I hate bringing one more coin into the mix :/ How about creating one that will also help finding cure? For example : http://folding.stanford.edu
That would be one way to help gain some new mainstream acceptance into the world of digital coins and get a whole new swarm of people involved. Thoughts?

79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to be different when issuing a new coin on: July 30, 2013, 10:23:37 PM
how about we all just vote on the 10 best coins and kill off the other 30ish..spreading ourselves to thin at this time probably isn't the best way to take over the world. One miners opinion
80  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Cryptobits Bounty Thread on: July 30, 2013, 09:07:23 PM
